#13 Revision
How do writers decide to what and how to revise?
How do we help students learn to revise?
#1. Some part is good
• The writer decides there is some good in the piece• Positive feedback from other students
or the teacher can help motivate the student to revise to make it better.
• If nothing is good, then it goes into the trash.
#2 It can be made better
• The writer must believe the writing can be better.• Give distance from the piece• Small group or whole group feedback
to help writer see potential
#3 Reason to make better• The writer has some reason to
make it better• Suggest students find another place
to make the essay begin.• Pick a critical point and have the
opposite happen. May give more insight about a character.
• Add four action verbs• Add 3 sensory details
#4 A plan to make it better
• The writer has some plan for figuring out how to make it better.• Teachers have to provide techniques
of revision because simply telling student to do it, won’t work.
In conclusion….
• When writers know that they have written something of value and believe it can be better, then they are ready to embrace revision. It is our job to teach this.
