13 JUNE 2018 UPDATE (#19)
Message from the Principal
Hi everyone,
Little things mean a lot at school. Last week one of our shy prep students plucked up the
courage to say hello back to me (for the first time). It was easily the highlight of my week and a
sign of progress and of little things making a difference. Other ways we can make a difference, is
to attend to the small things - like getting to school on time. It’s important for students to make
the most of every day and develop habits that will assist them throughout schooling.
Budgie Cup Touch Football is this Friday at Coorparoo Secondary College. The first games start at
9:30am. Parking is available at Birubi Street (parents). Click here to see the draw for all four
teams. Best of luck to our teams. Go Buranda!
We have hit the half ton mark in ticket sales for the Centenary Gala Reunion, the party is on! The
excitement is building. Please purchase your tickets asap.

know you will be there. Whether you are attending or not, we would love your help to spread

Join us for our Winter Solstice Celebration
(23 June)
You are invited to our Winter Solstice planting day for 2018. This year we are basically finishing
off the excellent efforts of the past few planting events with the final piece of our Fairy Wren
Forest behind the hall.
We have 50 native plants to put in along with a little weeding and some mulching. It should
prove to be a lovely hour or so of actual gardening, with the P&C selling some lovely home-
made pumpkin soup as the sun dips down.
The actual Winter Solstice is on the Thursday before the weekend but to celebrate this
auspicious passing we will be having a small fire with the soup to help warm our bones. The
wood ash from this fire will be used as one of the key ingredients of our biodynamic hedgerow
compost heap.
We are powering along with the double digging of the vege beds and will soon be ready to put in
our cool season green manure crop of oats and vetch. Very exciting!!! Mr Bryant
Things to know for the Solstice Celebration Please bring your own picnic blanket and soup mugs. Thanks to Rowena and the prep families
for organising this event: please come along to show your support for their efforts and to help
raise money to pay for our school’s Environmental Education Program.
Calling school bakers — can you whip up a dessert for the Solstice Celebration?
We’re looking for donations of desserts to sell at the solstice celebration.
Please call or text Rowena on 0407 000 288 if you can bring something yummy. Why not have a
baking morning with the kids before coming to the tree planting?

Fancy Planning a Fabulous End-of-year School Disco?
(7 December)

[email protected] to be part of the organising team.
$$$ Can You Help Us Make Sweet (or sometimes not-
so-sweet) Music? $$
This month, we are raising funds to improve access to musical instruments for students at the
school. Can you help us to source two new instruments? We need a Jupiter brand Trumpet
($600) and an entry level Jupiter Sax ($1,000). Can you donate towards either of these items?
If you can help with a donation, please email [email protected] with your details and
how much you are able to contribute to these items. We will then provide more information
about how to make the payment as well as express our deep thanks for your support. Should
donations exceed the purchase fee any additional monies will be invested into the music
program.
You can also contribute via the Qkr! App. To do this, go to the App store, download the App. In
the school menu choose Buranda State School. At the top of the menu is the Voluntary

Blast from the Past
The establishment of swimming pools in Queensland state schools was a growing trend in the early decades of the 20th century. Buranda State School was one of the first schools to have their own pool. It was built in 1922 by the parents and community
members. The pool had no filtration which required it to be filled each week. A large section of the swimming pool’s retaining wall
collapsed early in 1927, taking with it fencing and concrete floor slabs. Repairs to the wall were completed by M R Hornibrook for
£150.
