13 Colonies Moving Towards Independence

SS8H3: The student will analyze the role of Georgia in the American Revolution.

Boston Tea Party• The Sons of Liberty organized a protest

against the Tea Act in Boston called the Boston Tea Party.

• In 1773, the Sons of Liberty dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor.

• King George III and Parliament were mad!!!

The Intolerable ActsTo punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party, the Intolerable Acts were issued:1. Boston Harbor was closed until the colonists paid for

the damaged tea.2. Colonists were not allowed to have town meeting, except once a year with permission from their governor.3. Court system was changed. British official who committed capital crimes would be tried in England rather than in the colonies.4. New Quartering Act required colonists to feed and shelter British troops in the homes.

1st Continental Congress• In September 1774, representatives from each colony

(except for Georgia and Florida) met in Philadelphia to:

1. Decide to boycott all trade with Great Britain until the Intolerable Acts were stopped.

2. Encourage all colonists to arm themselves and create militias (groups of armed citizens).

3. Talk about writing a letter to King George. This letter will become the Declaration of Independence.

Loyalist or Patriot

• Colonists were forced to choose whether they wanted to remain loyal to Britain (Loyalists/Tories) or if they wanted to rebel against Britain (Patriots/Whigs).

• Georgia decided to join the other colonies in rebelling against Great Britain, however, some colonists remained loyal to King George III.

Starting the Revolution• The Sons of Liberty were storing weapons and

ammunition in Concord, Massachusetts.• British General, Thomas Gage, was assigned by King

George III to be the leader of Massachusetts. • General Gage realized that the Sons of Liberty were

planning a revolution, so he sent 700 of his troops to arrest members John Hancock and Samuel Adams and to take weapons from the colonists. .

• Sons of Liberty members Paul Revere and William Dawes alerted the colonists that the British soldiers were coming to attack.

Lexington & Concord

• On April 19, 1775, the 1st battle of the American Revolutionary War occurred in Lexington, Massachusetts.

Declaration of Independence• On July 4, 1776, the 2nd

Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence.

• This document was written by Thomas Jefferson.

• It is divided into 3 parts:1. Preamble: stated how

the colonists felt about democracy.

2. Body: listed 27 grievances (complaints) against King George III & Parliament.

3. Conclusion: declared the colonies to be an independent nation.

Declaration of Independence• John Hancock was the 1st to sign it.

• The following representatives from Georgia signed the Declaration of Independence:
