In the past few years we have had a vision

for our building that is coming to

completion. Even as we celebrate this

accomplishment and give thanks to God

for the gift of this new communal space,

we are now faced with another question.

What is next for Westminster? We knew

from the beginning the building was not

an end in itself, but a means to which we

may grow our ministry and mission. As

we put the finishing touches on our

renovations we must ask ourselves what

directions the Spirit of God may be

leading us as a congregation.

In the next six weeks, we will be

exploring this question more deeply. My

preaching will be focused on a “missional”

understanding of the church as the people

sent by God to proclaim God’s Kingdom

in our words and our actions. We will

hear a number of Minute for Missions

reminding us of our conversations as a

congregation about the gifts from our

past and the challenges facing us in the

present.

There is a Vision Panel (Scott

Anderson, Bud Smith, Karen Pridham,

Carl Martin, Kathy Kamp, Thatcher Root

and Ruth Hein) preparing to listen to

the congregation in order to

articulate a possible vision for

Westminster. And the congregation

will be gathering on Sunday, June 9 in

our worship and a brunch afterwards

in order to talk together about what

God has planned for Westminster.

What we are trying to discern

together is not necessarily our

particular vision for Westminster as

much as what we imagine is God’s

mission in the world and how

Westminster participates in that

vision. I hope you participate in our

prayerful discussions and help us

determine what is next for

Westminster.

As reported in the last update, almost all work in Phases I and II (narthex/sanctuary/lounge and

Yuma Street entrance) are nearly complete. The glass sides on the main stairway are installed and pew touch-ups are nearing completion. With reference to feedback on the wrinkling in the pew fabr ic , the upholsterer has advised us to let the fabric go through an initial stretching phase before making adjustments in the pews themselves and the fabric. We are waiting for delivery of step treads for the main stairway. The inclement weather of the past few weeks has pushed back completion of the sidewalk under the overhang.

The rains have also delayed bell tower repairs which means we still have leaks to deal with until repairs are completed. Regarding the ramp to the main front entrance, we are studying

options as to how we can widen it and at the same time provide a railing. The positioning of the railing (building or sidewalk side) will depend on construction issues. Additionally, the committee decided that the large ash tree next to the ramp needs to be removed. We do not know if the roots will survive the excavation around the ramp, and the fact that if the ash borer disease hits Madison as expected, we will be required to remove the tree in any case.

Phase III remodeling continues in the former old office spaces, converting it into a library, conference room and small office is expected to be completed within the next two weeks. A temporary wooden wall continues in place at the old office end of our building to keep individuals out of the

construction area.

There are no dates set yet for when the parking lot repaving; we are waiting on the city's water-main rerouting project. It could be anytime during the summer or early fall.

T h e L a n d s c a p e subcommittee met with Prof. Harrington from the UW landscaping class to determine further details of an overall plan for both the long- and short-term. Various suggestions were submitted about what our landscaping priorities should be. Details will be brought to John Tarr to discuss how this will affect our final grading, additional black dirt and grass seeding. Given the current weather conditions the committee hesitates to give a completion date for final grading at this time.

�Approved a motion from the Worship Committee to seek donations for flowers for the sanctuary and recognize in memory/honor of a person or occasion in the bulletin as designated by the donor starting Rally Day in September.

�A new Nominating Committee will be elected d u r i n g t h e c a l l e d Congregational Meeting scheduled for May 5. Carl Martin agreed to be the second elder on the committee . Current committee chair is Jeff Zebrowski.

The Pentecost Offering will be received on May 19. This is one of four special offerings that happen during the year. The Pentecost Offering makes it possible for the larger church to encourage, develop, and support its young people, and address the needs of at-risk children.

Forty percent of the Pentecost Offering stays in our community and the Mission Committee directs to use of these funds to assist at-risk youth. Sixty percent is given to the

General Assembly. They use the funds to support programs to assist children at risk and to provide youth a n d y o u n g a d u l t programming.

In the past, our Mission Committee has used the funds maintained locally to help at-risk youth at Thoreau by buying snow pants for those who could not otherwise afford them. In addition, these funds have been used to support scholarships to the Arts Kaleidoscope program that takes place each summer

here at Westminster. Our own Westminster youth have benefited from the General Assemble programs supporting young adults, particularly the Triennium, This summer five of our youth will attend this event, which is a joyful celebration of faith and youth always come back inspired! The Pentecost offering provides a way to help youth both here and nationwide. The Mission Committee urges you to consider your support!

Stock shares will be available for $5 each. Everyone who purchases stock will receive a postcard from the youth while they are on the trip. Plus, there will be s p e c i a l r a f f l e opportunities for those who buy five or more shares. Mission Trip

On three Sundays this spring you will have the opportunity to buy shares of “Mission Trip Stock” following worship. This will be a fundraiser to show support of our Youth Mission Trip to St. Paul, Minnesota scheduled for June 30-July 5.

As a boy, French poet Anatole France was fascinated by the story of Simeon Stylites, a Christian ascetic saint who tried to achieve holiness by living atop a pillar for 37 years.

Young Anatole decided to try something similar by placing a chair atop the kitchen table.

His mother, however, wasn’t a fan of his methods. She made him climb down from his perch before dinnertime, which led the boy to

proclaim, “I perceive it is a very difficult thing to be a saint

while living with your family.”
