Erasmus Mundus Jurisdictions are increasing, international interdependence in the economy and European integration constantly offer new challenges which the Faculty of Law at the Leibniz Universität Hannover takes on both in teaching and research. Together with other European universities, Leibniz Universität offers a Master's degree in European Legal Practice (LL.M.Joint Degree) for graduates with a Bachelor's (or comparable) degree in Law. Belonging to the consortium are the Universities of Rouen and Lisbon. The Master's degree can be achieved within four semesters and is a joint degree awarded by the Faculties of Law at the participating universities.

Profile of the Degree Course

A special feature of the European Legal Practice programme (LL.M. Joint Degree) is the international study aspect. This international aspect is created by the study of two different legal systems in their respective languages. The consortium is part of a larger, pan-European network, the ELPIS, whose nearly thirty-year experience in international collaboration (Erasmus, Sokrates, Tempus and Passage to India projeets) is utilised in international student exchanges and programmes. The LL.M. students benefit from this tried and tested infrastructure.

Course content

Students will spend the first two terms at one of the consortium's foreign target universities and will acquire knowledge of law in different European legal systems. In the curriculum, there are special courses at the consortium's universities such as in cartel or environmental law or in the practice of international legal aid. Students can specialise within the selection available at their respective study locations and can largely determine their specialism themselves. In the fourth term, the LL.M. students prepare their Master's thesis at their primary university.

Language Skills

Excellent skills in two of the three national languages of the four partner universities (German, French or Portuguese) are necessary.

Practical Training

For European students, Hannover offers the opportunity to complete a practical training of up to three months at an international law firm or to gain practical experience at the Legal Clinic of the Faculty of Law. This offers insights into the tasks and work processes in this field.

Study Abroad

The first two semesters of the degree will be carried out at one of the degree-awarding partner universities (DaP). The completion of the third semester will follow at another university in the consortium and, in the fourth semester, the Master's thesis will be prepared and handed in at the DaP initially attended or, alternatively, at a new DaP. Modifications to these mobility requirements are intended for students whose home university is the primary university.

Fields of Professional Activity and Employment

Graduates are qualified to work in all legal professions, for example in international organisations, lawyers' offices with branches in different EU countries, businesses with particular foreign contacts within the EU or in the public sector.
