I think that it is appropriate to write a few words this week addressing the horrific event of mass murder and terrorism which occurred in Orlando this past weekend. Of course, it should go without saying that we, as the People of God, and indeed all persons of good will are shocked and saddened by this crime against life. We must pray for the dead, and pray for their families at this time, and going forward. Unfortunately, it is very likely that there will be individuals from every part of the political spectrum who will try to exploit this tragedy. They will talk about whatever hatred motivated the terrorist perpetrator. They will talk about his faith. They will talk about issues regarding firearms. All of these conversations have their place, but it seems to me that none of these conversations get anywhere near the heart of the problem, especially considering that, as I am writing this piece, I have just found out that a terrorist in France stabbed to death a police officer this morning. Is not the root of the problem in this world that there is a frightening lack of love? It is in the face of all of this evil that we must devote ourselves more and more every day to Christ by being more fervent members of His Body, the Church. The Church is the only voice in the world today proclaiming that love of God, and love of neighbor are essential commandments which bind every person on earth, regardless of their particular faith. Our faith also teaches us that we must be prepared for our day of judgment at every moment of our lives. Frequent tragedies like the one in Orlando, or any case of sudden death show each of us that we must be prepared for the summons of God at every moment. Let us keep before our eyes the Four Last Things: Death; Judgment; Heaven; Hell. Let our every thought, word, deed and omission be governed by the law of love. Most importantly, let us always acknowledge our sins, and ask God for forgiveness for them. Let us never be like the Pharisees who believed that their sins were small, thus presuming on God's mercy. Go to confession frequently, and be truly confident at every moment that God is holding you in the palm of his hand. May all the dead rest in peace, and may God bless their loved ones. Fr.
