This series will take some of the most familiar verses in scripture we often know from memory and look at the verse right after that verse. The sermon will then be based on that second verse; however, more often than not the beauty of the Word of God is that the second verse is intrinsically tied to the familiar verse we know. This Sunday, we begin with Romans 3:23. You know that one... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. But what about Romans 3:24? Well, pick up that Bible, and open it up and see what verse 24 says. So maybe you will understand the Sermon Title... Sinners and Saints. See you for worship this Sunday. CONGREGATIONAL MEETING SUNDAY 9/10 The purpose of Sundays Congregational Meeting is to ask the congregation’s support in filing an online application for a DBA. In consultation with Joann Dyroff, attorney for Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy, it was recommended that a DBA (Doing Business As) be filed for John Calvin Presbyterian Church which would allow us to legally operate as either John Calvin United Presbyterian Church or John Calvin Presbyterian Church. As such, we would not have to change any other legal documents. WOMEN’S MOVIE DISCUSSION GROUP 9/10 This Sunday is the last session of the series of HALF TRUTHS by Adam Hamilton, and the topic is Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin. What do you mean it’s not in the Bible! Hamilton talks about how this statement does not reflect the kinds of things Jesus taught; that there is some truth behind this bit of folk wisdom, although it falls short of conveying the full truth revealed in the Bible. The group will look into the word sinused in the New Testament and find its a term used by archers that meant “to miss the mark.” We will discuss various popular passages of scripture where the theological word for missing the mark is sin and because we each daily miss the marksaying, thinking, or doing things we should not have done, or failing to say, think, or do things we should have donewe as Christians, find ourselves in need of the Saviors forgiveness. We will spend some time talking about Gods love for us and how that transforming power changes our lives when we love others the way God loves us. For it is in Gods love that we find meaning and purpose, learn how to be a better follower of Jesus, who is the way, the truth and the life.

eScrip Update John Calvin Church received $62.61 from the Schnucks’ eScrip Community Card Program during June 2017. This increases our total receipts to $10,207.95 since we started the program. This program includes both Food and Pharmacy purchases. Thank you for your continued support. If you would like to sign up for the program or need a new card, call Marion Elliott, 314-739-5372, for information on how to receive a card.

The Session in conjunction with our Recording Secretary having been monitoring pledged and non-pledged giving for the year. Of course, no Session member or the Pastor, know what you pledged and what you have contributed so far for that pledge. What we work with is totals. We have historically received great support from our congregation and this year there is much good news. Our non-pledge giving appears to be right on target.

We have many pledges who have so far given more than their pledge and we have many who have paid as they pledged. But we do have a substantial amount of people who are behind in their pledge. Some of this is attributed to distribution. Many of you take the tax advantage of periodic distributions which are sent out during the year, directly to the church, which may attribute to your pledge being behind because a distribution has not yet come out but will come out before the end of the year.

Some of it may be attributed to a lot of our congregation traveling during the summer months. I know that this past Sunday, which was Labor Day weekend, but was also the first Sunday of the Month, had a contribution amount that was substantially below what we normally collect to the first Sunday of a month.

Pastor John and the Session are asking for September to be Ketch-up Month. Please prayerfully look at your last statement to see if you are behind in your pledge and see if you might be able to bring that number closer if not to your pledged amount. The end of September is important because it is the end of the third quarter and the Session will begin to look at the 2018 budget, using real numbers from 2017.

Thanks for your attention to this matter.

Let’s Make September

COOKIES NEEDED Each Sunday after worship, everyone is invited to gather in the GE Room for coffee hour, a time of fellowship with coffee and cookies. Our cookie supply is getting a little low right now and we’d like to ask if anyone would like to donate a package of cookies to help us restock. Please bring the cookies to the Church Kitchen and mark, “Coffee Hour.”

HELP USING SKYPE We are thinking about using Skype as part of our programming here at JCPC. Does anyone have a good working knowledge of Skype? Please see Pastor John.

NEW MEMBER'S CLASS Pastor John will be organizing a new member's class that will meet one evening and goes through a Power Point Presentation on the history of the church, our church and how our church runs within the Presbyterian system. Then after attending the class you would be eligible to fill out an application to join our church and will subsequently meet with the Session to be received. The last step is a public recognition of your membership during worship. See Pastor John if you are interested in becoming a member of our church.

MEN'S BIBLE STUDY Pastor John is planning on resuming the Men's Bible Study sometime in September and wants to see if we can expand the participation in the group. Pastor John is looking for suggestions for topics to cover, so if anyone has a particular topic... this could be a book of the Bible, a character in the Bible or a theme and how the Bible addresses the theme, please see Pastor John.

TRIVIA NIGHT The Church is planning a Trivia Night this fall to be held at the Maryland Hgts Community Center on Friday, October 6. Our goal is to have at least 20 tables. So it is important that we have table captains who will be responsible for recruiting 8 people to fill their table. This is a great opportunity to invite people outside of our church to this event. If you are willing to be a table recruiter, please see Pastor John. The theme is: THROUGH THE AGES. There will be 8 categories and ten questions per category. The night should be filled with great fun and will also include a silent auction. Please mark the date and let's fill the room.(All kinds of beverages are allowed at the Community Center).
