When construction season kicks off, so does the com-plaining.
Regardless of where you live, you’ve likely read a local news story of busi-ness ow ners f u r iou sly condemning nearby con-struction that is impeding potential customers from entering their store or res-taurant.
And their anger is legit-imate.
Although the project will almost certainly benefit the merchant in the fu-ture, trenches, fences and machinery are an obvious barrier to success. And the fact construction usually synchronizes with the sea-son of peak foot traffic only fuels their anger.
Montreal has created a solution to help mitigate the beef between business and government construc-tion sites.
Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante recently announced the city will earmark $25 million to assist businesses affected by construction work carried out by the municipality. The city’s merchants will be able to apply for compensation up to $30,000, if their business
is disrupted by municipal construction projects. As well, the funding is retro-active to Jan. 1, 2016 and available until the end of 2021.
“It is a very positive and strong move in telling mer-chants, ‘we want you to stay alive, of course, and keep your business up while we are doing construction that will benefit you in the long term,’” Plante told the CBC.
Montreal is expected to have a system in place for merchants to apply for restitution this fall. To qual-ify, business owners must prove that construction work caused them to lose business.
The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) was one of the first organizations to applaud the city’s compensation program. In a recent report, the CFIB outlined that since 2012, up to 65,000 busi-nesses have been seriously affected by infrastructure projects.
As well, the federation has called upon Canadian municipa l it ies to of fer compensation, develop mitigation strategies and appoint business liaison
officers for future projects. “We commend Montreal
for showing leadership on this issue and encourage other municipalit ies to follow its example,” said Simon Gaudreault, CFIB director of economic af-fairs.
“Extended roadwork can have devastating effects on small businesses, which often lose sales, have to borrow or relocate to sur-vive, or even close down altogether.”
W hile Montreal’s ap-proach may not solve the problem, and will likely attract criticism, the city is at least making an effort to build bridges between two important elements of its economy.

The JCB Dancing Diggers recently made an appearance in Canada to help celebrate the company’s customers.
The hydraulic dance troupe performed at Moore JCB’s annual Customer Appreciation Day, held at the company’s St. Laurent, Quebec location on June 6.
Lance Stroll, a Williams Martini racing driver, also made an appearance at the celebration.
The JCB display team (known as the Dan-cing Diggers) tour shows and celebrations to demonstrate the unusual ways in which the company’s backhoes can support themselves or manoeuvrer.
The machines used are stock 3CX back-hoes and the only modifications are the temporary pyrotechnics devices attached with a magnetic base.
To avoid transporting machines around the world, the team uses the dealers’ stock machines when performing at dealership events.
The four-person Dancing Diggers team featured two drivers were from the United Kingdom and two from Savannah, Georgia.
The idea for the JCB display team was born in 1962, when Joseph Bamford orchestrated the first ‘up and over’ manoeuvrer, where four JCB backhoes lifted themselves on their hydraulics arms to create a bridge, while the company Cadillac drove underneath.
The stunt was developed to show off the power and versatility of the backhoe con-figuration.
Over the years, the show has evolved into a gymnastic routine by the company’s display team.
If we don’t stock it we will find it for you.

An apprentice from Toromont Cat’s Peter-borough, Ontario location has won gold in the Heavy Equipment Service category at the 2018 Skills Ontario Competition.
On May 8, Toromont apprentice Kaleb Czyruk joined more than 2,300 other par-ticipants in about 70 skilled trades and technology contests.
During the competition, several stations were set up with a variety of challenges such as electrical system troubleshooting, hydraulic system troubleshooting, engine troubleshooting, powertrain troubleshooting and precision measuring.
Each competitor was evaluated on their ability to work safely, solve problems, re-cord accurate measurements and follow documented procedures. At the end of the competition, when all the scores were tallied, Czyruk placed first overall to take home the gold medal.
Toromont Cat and Battlefield Equipment supported the provincial leg of the compe-tition by providing three CAT 924K wheel loaders and three judges.
Winning the gold medal allowed Czyruk to represent Ontario and Toromont Cat at the 2018 Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) in Edmonton on June 6.
At nationals, Czyruk took the bronze medal giving Ontario a podium finish.
“Having technologically driven skills and digital literacy skills is becoming increasingly important for careers in these sectors, and through SCNC we are able to raise aware-ness of these evolving occupations”, said Shaun Thorson, Chief Executive Officer of Skills Canada.

Hydraulics are the heart and soul of your machine. Over the last several years, hydraulics have become more sophisticated with b e t t e r p e r f o r m a n c e
through larger pumps and higher pressures. And some machines maintain performance with less horsepower due to Tier 4 emission regulations.
Not only do hydraulics now feature higher quality components for improved lifting capacity and breakout
forces, but they also make more versatile machines. That versatility starts with attachments.
A performance boostOperators can now han-

performance. The capacity to connect a multitude of attachments continues to advance in the industry with stronger hydraulics, as well as attachment-friendly de-signs and features.
Improvement — even in the last five years — is evident. For example, the auxiliary hydraulics in Take-uchi’s larger excavators were recently improved with the addition of dual hydraulic circuits. Now, attachments, such as a hydraulic breaker, can mount on the excavator without detaching hydraulic lines.
The right flowMu l t i p l e at t a c h m e nt
presets on Takeuchi excav-ators can dial in proper flow adjustments for optimal at-tachment performance from the comfort of the operator’s station multi-informational display.
The biggest item to keep in mind when purchasing an attachment to pair with your machine is the recom-mended flow requirements. Avoid making mistakes like operating the machine at full throttle as it could surpass the maximum settings of the attachment. Over time, excessive flow wears and damages the attachment, seals, components and hoses.
Attachments may add efficiency to a jobsite. Pick out the right attachments for your lineup and you can turn one machine into an all-encompassing versatile monster. If you do not yet possess multiple attach-ments, you may be missing out on the opportunity to expand your business.
Keeping hydraulics cleanIt is important to perform
regular maintenance and safeguard the hydraulic sys-tem from even the smallest contaminates. Like emis-sions compliant diesel engines, today’s more re-fined hydraulic components are highly sensitive to con-tamination.
Contamination will al-most certainly shorten the life of or completely wipe out hydraulic components, depending on how much and what variety. To protect
sensitive components, prac-tice routine maintenance for everything from filters to fluid testing.
In addition to routine maintenance, cleanliness is also important when swap-ping out attachments. Keep dirt and other contaminates from getting into the system by cleaning attachment fit-tings on both the machine and attachment side before connecting. Clean the refill cap and surrounding area before replenishing hydraul-ic fluid.
We recommend con-necting only new hydraulic attachments to your machine or ones already in your line-up. Otherwise, you may be introducing contaminated oil into your machine’s sys-tem by using an unfamiliar attachment. Unless you are willing to take the time to test the hydraulic fluid already stored in the attachment, you should be aware of the potential consequences.
Maintenance schedule
Daily Routine:
· Check fluid levels
· Look for damaged lines, cylinders and hydraulic leaks around the ma-chine.
· Clean hydraulic attach-ment couplers before connecting to the ma-chine.
· Pay attention to hy-draulic oil temperatures especially when running high-flow attachments like a mulching head.
Annual Maintenance:
· Take fluid samples to ensure hydraulic oil and vital components are at acceptable particle levels.
· Always replenish with manufacturer-recom-mended hydraulic fluid.
Other Intervals:
· Manufacturers have a new machine break-in period around the first 50 hours of operation. Follow scheduled hour-
l y m a i n t e n a n c e f o r replacement of filters and hydraulic oil.
The hydraulics system is the backbone and hardest working part of the machine. Damage the hydraulic sys-tem and your excavator, compact track loader or skid steer loader will be rendered useless.
Not only will damage or neglect cost you downtime on the job, but you’ll also pay thousands of dollars down the road. Make a plan to pro-tect the most expensive and vital components of your machine.
When it comes down to it, a little daily preventative maintenance goes a long way.

While The Sarjeant Company has helped construct Simcoe County for nearly 130 years, the company is now helping to build its local arts community.
For the last eight years, the Barrie, On-tario-based concrete supply company has partnered with the MacLaren Art Centre for The Sarjeant Company Design Project. Through the program, high school art stu-dents in the Muskoka and Simcoe regions are invited to create a revolving image to decorate the drum of the company’s con-crete trucks.
Mike MacMillan, manager of IT and de-velopment at Sarjeant, explained the project helps bring art into an unusual venue.
“Jobsites are not generally a place where you would see artwork. These trucks really do add quite a bit of beauty,” MacMillan said.
Each year, new artwork is selected from students at three high schools for three of the company’s trucks. So far, more than 600
artists have entered their work into the com-petition, with the work of 31 students being featured on Sarjeant’s fleet of concrete trucks.
“There’s a certain sense of pride our drivers have, because these machines look great, they’re very impressive,” MacMillan said, who is also a board member for the art centre. “This has really become a part of our brand, and our customers comment on the different trucks and the new designs.”
Christina Mancuso, education officer at the MacLaren Art Centre, explained the partnership with Sarjeant is a perfect fit for the centre’s mandate to “bring people to art and art to people.”
“It’s art in unexpected places. Art doesn’t have to be on the wall of a gallery and stay there, it goes out into the world,” she said.
The project is the brainchild of Scott Elliott, CEO of The Sarjeant Company.
At first, Elliott tried to recruit artists to paint on the actual drums.
“Due to how tall the trucks are, and a number of health and safety problems with enclosed spaces, it wasn’t really practical,” MacMillan said.
However, around 2010, wrap technology began to gain popularity, and the cost of wrapping a vehicle with printed vinyl began to drop, created a viable avenue to decorate the trucks.
Alongside creating a method to display
art on the truck drums, the vinyl wrapping also helps protect the equipment.
We’ve noticed it keeps the rust down on some of the drums,” MacMillan said. “Some of the wraps from 2011 are still on the trucks. They hold up very well.”
Each year, MacLaren recruits a profes-sional artist from the region to assist the students in creating a design that is suitable for a concrete truck drum. The students learn

how to create a design that will work on a rotating drum.
“The idea for the project is to create a design that is very vibrant, very graphic in that sense where you can see it from afar,” Mancuso said.
“The design is cyclical, so it has no begin-ning or end.”
When the artwork is complete, a jury com-prised of staff from the art centre and Sarjeant
select the winning designs for the year. The artwork entered into the competition is displayed at the art centre and the finalists are invited to the gallery’s opening night.
“The exposure is huge for the artist and the school. It’s a win-win for all parties involved,” Mancuso said.
“And it’s a project that continues to live on. You see them throughout the community.”
When the students arrive, the trucks,
decorated with the winning work, are parked in front of the centre.
“Then the students see their truck. They get super excited. They’re thrilled. The ex-citement level in the building is electric,” Mancuso said.
As of this year, Sarjeant has worked with every public and catholic high school in the region. As well, the company has announced the project has been extended indefinitely.
While the program helps Sarjeant to fur-ther extend its roots into the community, it’s also a sense of pride within its staff.
“Part of it is; who has art? You wouldn’t think of a truck driver. This is something they get to have that’s aesthetically pleasing and they get to be proud of it,” MacMillan said.
“Each trucker has a story when they’re visiting a site. They’re proud of their trucks and the students that produced the work.”

The Associated General Contractors of America () say tariffs imposed by the United States government has already led to “dramatic increases” in the cost of con-struction materials.
The American contractors’ association is now warning costs will continue to climb as trade restrictions take effect.
On May 31, the United States Secretary of Com-
merce, announced the government will impose tariffs of 25 per cent on steel and 10 per cent on alum-inum for materials imported from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.
An analysis by the Asso-ciated General Contractors of America of new Labor Department data for the month of May, found steep increases already occurred on a variety of materials.
“Prices jumped at double-digit annual rates for metals, lumber and plywood, and diesel fuel, while ready-mixed concrete, asphalt paving and roofing materials also had unusually large in-creases,” said Ken Simonson, AGC’s chief economist. “The cost of all goods used in con-struction rose 8.8 per cent from May 2017 to May 2018, the steepest annual increase in nearly seven years.”
From May 2017 to May 2018, the producer price index jumped by 17.3 per cent for aluminum mill shapes, 13.9 per cent for lumber and plywood, 13.8 per cent for copper and brass mill shapes and 10.5 per cent for steel mill products. Other construction inputs that rose sharply include diesel fuel, 44.5 per cent; asphalt felts and coatings, 8.9 per cent; ready-mixed concrete, 6.5 per cent; and paving mix-tures and blocks, 5.2 per cent.
The impact from the tariffs is not reflected in the most recent data.
“These increases far out-stripped the 4.2 per cent rise in the price index for new construction, implying that contractors are facing a severe squeeze on costs for both ongoing and new projects,” Simonson said.
“Moreover, tariffs imposed on steel and aluminum since this data was collected in mid-May are likely to drive contractors’ costs still higher.”
The producer price index for inputs to construction industries, goods—a meas-ure of all materials used in construction projects in-cluding items consumed by contractors, such as concrete products—rose 2.2 per cent in May alone and 8.8 per cent over 12 months. The year-over-year increase was the steepest since July 2011.
Even before tariffs took effect, construction of-ficials say the tariffs have triggered a surge of orders that mills say exceed their current capacity, a situation that threatens to produce construction delays, budget problems and possibly cancellations for future con-struction projects.
“Considering the impact the mere threat of tariffs have had on material prices and demand, prices are likely to increase further as the new trade restrictions come online,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the AGC’s chief executive officer. “Forcing contractors to pay more for materials and wait longer to receive them will make construction more costly and slower.”

Dozens of pieces of historical construction equipment came out of retirement on June 9 and 10 for Wheels and Tracks in Motion, hosted by the Historical Construction Equipment Association Canada (HCEA Canada).
The HCEA Canada event welcomed about 1,800 people to the Simcoe County Museum in Minesing, Ont. throughout the two-day demo.
The event is one of the largest displays of working historical construction equipment in Canada.
The museum grounds and adjacent gravel pits hosted dozens of pieces of heritage equipment, including steam powered equipment, tractors, vintage road building, rock crushing, grading and hoisting machines.
The HCEA’s next public exhibit returns in the fall with the Last Blast at the museum on Oct. 13.

Doosan has revamped its DA30-5 articulated dump truck (ADT) to include numerous performance and productivity updates.
A significant develop-ment in the new DA30-5 ADT — rated in the popular 30-metric-ton size class — is a new front suspension.
The front suspension has been updated to a hy-dro-gas, self-levelling system to provide greater shock ab-sorption.
“A number of customers said improvements were needed on the front sus-pension. The engineers took that and decided to utilize a similar concept to the DA40, said Doosan’s marketing manager Aaron Kleingartner.
Combined, these suspen-sion system features allow for better driving comfort, especially when the truck is being driven empty on a construction jobsite or at a mining operation.
“When it’s empty, the characteristics of the ma-chine are vastly different, and a lot of time, the vehicle
is empty,” Kleingartner said. From a technical stand-
point, the truck’s hydro-gas cylinders are connected to pressure accumulators, and the accumulators and hy-draulic system replace the previous shock absorbers and a rubber spring. The suspension of the updated DA30-5 includes a self-level-ling feature and the ability to change the characteristics by adjusting the pressure.
The DA30-5 cab interior was redesigned to provide better ergonomics and more operator comfort, taking into consideration input from current owners and oper-ators. There are more than a dozen new features inside the completely new layout of the Doosan DA30-5 cab to enhance the driving ex-perience.
“Inside the cab, you’ll real-ly notice we’ve made a lot of strides to make it more comfortable for the operator,” Kleingartner said.
These include a new dash-board with a modified shape and a soft-touch automotive
material, making it easier to clean, and a high-quality finish and appearance.
“The truck’s new monitor in the cab has bigger indi-cators for easier reading. User-friendly graphics and icons can be controlled by buttons on the display panel, and the panel now has the capability to display multiple cameras views for increased visibility around the ADT.
“As they’re driving, we want them focused on their environment and work area,” Kleingartner said. “We also want to make sure they’re aware of how the machine is functioning.”
Updates to the DA30-5 pro-vide lower operating costs for owners as there are fewer service points with fewer oil types in the driveline and increased intervals for trans-mission oil changes.
“There’s one oil to stock. There’s one oil to keep on the shelf for the customer or dealer. This helps to improve serviceability,” Kleingartner said.
A new cab tilting system
allows service technicians to lift and close the cab in a few minutes.
As well, the truck is no longer built with rubber springs in the suspension, and there are only four rub-ber components in the entire front and rear suspension.
New DA30-5 safety features include a new control panel with a power cut off switch and a bright LED indication lamp which indicates when it is safe to switch off the power cutoff. In prior iterations of the DA30 ADT, the limited slip differential was operated manually. Other features in-
clude a new easy-to-use lever for retarder steering — a new, more precise brake system for increased sensitivity and performance — and an extra hand grip on the right-hand side.
Out of the Doosan DA30-5 cab, a new all-round hand grip rail has been installed for improved safety for mov-ing round the outside of the truck for maintenance and cleaning tasks.
A new paint scheme has been designed in the DA30-5 to better fit within the Doo-san equipment lineup. The trucks’ bottom structure is
painted grey. “It’s very spe-cifically similar to wheel loaders introduced this year to really fortify our brand identity,” Kleingartner said. “Our brand identity team has really worked hard to change the look and feel of the machine.”
Powered by a 370 hp diesel engine, the updated DA30-5 meets Tier 4 emission regu-lations through the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Exhaust Gas Recircula-tion (EGR) technologies, with an electronic brake system, one of four brake systems on the trucks.
Doosan tweaks its DA30-5 articulated dump truck
Volvo Construction Equipment introduces next gen combination rollersWith the latest engine tech-nology and features that help to provide a dense, high-quality mat, the CR30B and CR35B are developed for small-scale compaction projects.
Built on the platform of previous models, the next-generation machines can be used in a variety of ap-plications, such as driveways, small paths, patchworks or shoulders on roads.
T h e r o l l e r s u s e t h e high-frequency vibration of the front drum to achieve density targets, and the four pneumatic rear tires manipu-late the compacted material, ensuring impermeability and smoothness of the mat.
Both models are pow-ered by a Kubota 49.6 hp low-emission, fuel-efficient engine, which meet Tier 4 Final emissions regulations and feature a passive re-generation system that cleans the filters automatically.
The filter cleaning capab-ility eliminates the need for the machine to stop or for operator input. Fuel use is also reduced via the option-al auto-idle feature, which reduces engine speed when controls are inactive for more than 60 seconds.
Consistent compactionThe CR30B and CR35B
combination rollers offer
consistent compaction due to a handful of advanced fea-tures, according to Volvo. The auto-vibration feature auto-matically engages vibration when the machine reaches 2.4 km/h and disengages when the speed drops below 1.9 km/h to reduce the risk of over-compaction.
To optimize finished pave-ment quality, the drum edges are chamfered and rounded to avoid marking the mat while rolling.
The pressurized water spraying system and a sep-arate emulsion tank prevent material pick-up. As well, the operator can adjust the water flow rate and emulsion flow rate independently, for
greater productivity and ease of use.
Ease of operation is en-
hanced by the new side console and display, en-abling operators to make adjustments on the fly.
Sliding seatThe operator seat can also
slide laterally according to individual preferences and jobsite requirements.
For increased rolling pre-cision, the engine hood is sloped, offering a clear for-ward view of the jobsite, as well as unobstructed sight-lines down to the drum and spray bars.
More uptimeFor improved uptime,
the 300 litre water spraying system increases time be-tween refills, while the low positioning of the water and
emulsion tanks enable them to be quickly and easily filled from ground level.
The machines’ hinged hood provides clear access to the engine, hydraulics, fuses and relays for swift and convenient servicing.
Volvo also offers a range of solutions to optimize ma-chine uptime and reduce operating costs.
The CR30B and CR35B are Tech Tool and MATRIS compatible, helping speed up diagnostic time.

Caterpillar has announced the launch of two new Cat forest machine models — the 548 and the 548 LL — with increased horsepower, swing torque, lift capacity and tractive effort.
T h e n e w C a t f o r e s t machines are versatile, pur-pose-built track machines that can be customized to perform a complete range of tasks for forestry operations and contractors.
The Cat 548 forestry ex-cavator is configured for forestry tasks ranging from road building and site prep-aration to processing logs roadside or at a landing. The Cat 548 LL is configured as a log loader and can per-form log handling tasks, such as shovel logging, loading, power clam/butt-n-top applications and millyard activities.
T h e m a c h i n e s a r e equipped with an enhanced hydraulic system to deliver more power. Upsized pumps, the layout of components, and back-to-back main control valve all optimize hydraulic oil flow.
The hydraulic updates enable the 548 and 548 LL
engine to run at a lower steady state rpm while maxi-mizing power. Operating at a lower rpm saves fuel and lowers operating costs.
At the same time, the Tier 4 Final engine and features like a variable pitch fan, variable power modes, automatic engine speed control, one-touch idle and boom and stick regeneration valves also assist with fuel conservation. With automatic engine speed control, the machines will re-vert automatically to a lower idle speed when there is a lull in operation. Regeneration valves minimize oil required from the pump to maximize efficiency.
The 548 and 548 LL are powered by a Cat 204 hp C7.1 ACERT engine with increased horsepower that maintains maximum per-formance under load.
Strong hydraulic horse-power allows the 548 and 548 LL to handle a variety of work tools.
An almost 20 per cent boost in swing torque, depending on the model, provides more power to move trees, increasing production and efficiency. Heavy lift mode
and other updates enable greater lift capacity to han-dle larger payloads with improved control, and trac-tive effort has improved by as much as 13 per cent to allow efficient manoeuvring when working away from the road.
With boom arrangements and hydraulic systems for specific applications, the 548 and 548 LL are optimized for road building, loading, processing, shovelling or millyard unloading and stacking.
New track options meet shovel logging and low ground pressure application requirements, while ground saw hydraulics are available for log loader applications.
In addition to the standard cab, a purpose-built proces-sor cab option is available for both models, and two pre-mium rear entry cab choices are available for the 548 LL.
The Forest Machine cabs have features designed to reduce fatigue and keep operators working comfort-ably all day.
An air ride seat, which is fully adjustable, includes heating and cooling cap-ability, and a bi-level air
conditioner, heater and defroster keep the cab at a comfortable temperature. Other features include a sat-ellite radio, 12-volt power supply socket for charging, a larger monitor and LED lights.
Standard tool control soft-ware enables quick, efficient selection and swapping of tools.
New rear entry cab op-tions provide convenient access on a fully lit platform through the use of a key fob. For these rear entry cabs, a new cab forward riser and optimized window design
improve visibility for shovel logging and other applica-tions, while a cab lock down system increases machine uptime by increasing cab tilt efficiency and minimizing transport time.
For serviceability, a one-piece engine hood design with two opening angles al-lows easy access to engine and cooling compartments. The side-by-side engine and hydraulic coolers are con-venient for cleaning due to a cooler that hinges out of the way, and fewer cool-ing fins improves debris flow-through and reduces
clogging. Plentiful storage space at ground level allows operators easy access to tools, equipment and sup-plies that are used on the job daily.
Cooling capability is in-creased 12 per cent for trouble-free operation, and the variable pitch, reversing cooling fan maintains opti-mum fluid temperature.
The purpose-built upper frame, high-wide carbody, linkage configurations and enclosures feature thick doubler plates, extra gussets and other weldments and reinforcements.

Vince Baggetta has been in the land-scaping business since he was 15. Fourteen years ago, he decided he wanted to branch out on his own and established Valterra Landscaping to serve the GTA. Valterra offers com-prehensive landscape services – from concept through to construction for residential, commercial and industrial projects.
He attributes the company’s success to delivering high-quality, cost-effective projects that are finished on time and on budget. “I run a tight ship. The crew all get along and everyone is very metic-ulous on every project,” stated Vince.
“We had very good success with Bob-cat® machines at a previous compa-ny so I contacted Gino Cervo, sales specialist for Bobcat of Toronto when I started my business. The first Bobcat machine I purchased was the S220 skid-steer loader. I still have it and will never get rid of it! I now have 9 Bobcat machines: S220, S250, 463 compact skid-steer loaders, 331 and E85 com-pact excavators, and two T750, T450 and T770 compact track loaders. I have never had a real problem with any of them.”
“My new Bobcat R-Series E85 com-pact excavator has even more visibility,
greater clearance, has a quick attach, A/C, heat, radio and keyless start which is a big plus. Each operator gets their own code. I don’t have to worry about keys. The machine will also send sig-nals to both myself and the dealership when service is needed, etc. It saves time and my machines from damage.”
“Gino Cervo and Bobcat of Toronto’s service has been great. Gino and I are so close now, I was even at his wedding.”
Thanks Vince.

Thunder Creek Equipment has redesigned its service and lube trailer (SLT) to include a new chassis and front-end design.
As well, the SLT now includes expanded storage in the front and rear utility boxes, and a modular design that allows owners to add new features and components at any time after purchase.
The trailer features a modular tank design that is capable of holding 1,665 litres of fluid in up to eight tanks with combinations of 95, 208 and 416 litres. This can include tanks for diesel, engine or hydraulic oil, used oil reclamation, grease delivery, antifreeze or diesel exhaust fluid (DEF).
“The Thunder Creek SLT provides a sig-nificantly lower total cost of ownership compared to full-sized lube trucks with similar capacities and functions,” said Luke Van Wyk, general manager of Thunder Creek Equipment. “We give equipment managers the flexibility to customize their trailer with up to eight fluids, plus separate solutions for DEF and grease in the newly expanded front and rear compartments.”
The redesigned front-end provides an additional 378 litre DEF storage tank and Thunder Creek’s proprietary two-in-one closed DEF distribution system. This can either be included at the time of purchase
or field installed at a later date. The new front enclosure is 23 per cent larger than the previous model, and the rear utility box is 56 per cent larger. The enlarged spaces give owners the opportunity to add toolboxes, workbenches, grease delivery systems and added oil or fluid capacity.
“The ability for owners to easily field install many of these options after their purchase, such as the DEF system and the rear utility box, further allows the trailer to grow with their field service needs,” Van Wyk said.
In addition to fluid delivery, the service and lube trailer is outfitted with a com-bination generator/air compressor or a three-in-one welder/generator/air compres-sor. This helps power pneumatic pumps for fluid delivery and other jobsite tools needed for field maintenance. An optional WorkSight light tower with LED lights is also available for performing service work at night.
The service and lube trailer retains many of the design features of the previous model, including 10-gauge steel tanks, interior LED lighting and the pneumatic pumping system with reels up to 23 metres long. The trailer can be purchased without the rear utility box and combination generator/air compressor for those who prefer to run the air off of their truck.

Organizers of the National Heavy Equip-ment Show have announced the trade show will return to the International Centre in Mississauga in 2019.
Coming off the heels of its 20th anniver-sary in 2017, the show, held every other year, returns on March 28 and 29.
The biennial event features cutting-edge products and big machine displays from the leaders of the heavy equipment and construction industries. The 20th anni-versary National Heavy Equipment Show welcomed about 13,370 people, a number on par with the 2015 event.
Show attendees included a mix of heavy equipment professionals including the leaders of the construction, road building, land improvement, and infrastructure in-dustries – along with job seekers, students and those training for specific trades, and some families with young children who were awestruck by the mammoth equipment.
“Planning for our 2019 edition is already well underway,” said Mark Cusack, nation-al show manager. “We saw over 13,000 attendees in 2017, and we anticipate the
upcoming show to attract an even bigger and more diverse crowd. With the current focus on major infrastructure projects across the country, we expect buyers to be out in full force with those projects top of mind.”
Attendees and exhibitors can look forward to several show features in 2019, including:
· Snow and ice removal: winter manage-ment products, services, equipment and technology.
· The gravel pit: a large display of working aggregate machinery.
· The rental pavilion: a variety of equip-ment, tools and products for contractors and road building professionals.
· Safety products: a focus on employee safety and worksite security.
· The recruiting here program: an opportunity to connect job seekers with companies that are hiring.
Alongside announcing show dates, the show is also now open to exhibitor registra-tion. For more information on booth packages or attending the show, visit NHES.ca.

Ideal for municipalities and work in heav-ily populated areas, John Deere’s revamped 190G W excavator provides customers with a “Swiss army knife” for clearing ditches, repairing potholes, loading trucks or moving Jersey barriers.
The 190G W features a 173 hp diesel engine that meets Final Tier 4 emission regulations without aftertreatment devices. As well, a lightweight, split-type hood provides wide-open access to the engine from the front, and same-side filters and water separator at ground level simplify maintenance. The wheeled model boasts an operating weight between 19,700 and 20,500 kg.
“The wheeled excavator is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment in the market, and the 190G W now features Final Tier 4 emission technology, along with other customer-inspired updates,” said Jonathan Spendlove, excavator product marketing manager for John Deere Con-struction and Forestry. “With the 190G W, you can dig like a tracked excavator and move the wheeled machine around from site to site without having to invest in a truck and trailer.”
The 190G W possesses a short wheelbase to easily slip into close quarters.
For close-up work, customers can opt for a two-piece boom. The excavator can move between job sites with a top speed of 35 km/h, while its rubber tires won’t damage concrete or asphalt.
A spacious cab comes equipped with an easy-to-navigate LCD monitor that lets the operator dial in a wealth of machine information and functionality.
On the outside of the machine, LED lights connected to the reconfigured counter-weight require less maintenance and increase visibility on the jobsite. A standard battery-dis-connect switch and larger handrail keep operator safety a priority.
The 190G W is protected by a heavy-duty undercarriage and durable D-channel side frames. Added strength comes from welded bulkheads within the boom that resist torsion-al stress, tungsten-carbide thermal-coated arm surfaces and oil-impregnated bush-ings. An enlarged cover provides additional protection for the blade cylinder. As well, a reinforced outrigger cylinder further boosts component durability.
Deere updates its 190G wheeled excavator

Manitowoc recently introduced North America to its Potain MR 160 C luffing jib tower crane at Crane Days 2018.
Manitowoc's Crane Days 2018 event took place in early June at the company's factory in Shady Grove, Pennsyl-vania. Visitors to the event were the first in the region to see the tower crane in action — one of five new machines introduced at Crane Days.
The 10 tonne tower crane is ideally suited for congested job sites, due to its ability to attain excellent underhook heights while avoiding obstacles.
The MR 160 C also offers a tip load of 2.4 tonnes and a maximum jib length of 50 metres. The jib can be luffed to a nearly vertical position of 86 degrees, and high-performance slewing and hoisting equipment provides precise control of loads throughout the entire working radius.
“Like all our Potain cranes, the MR 160 C is manufactured with lightweight components to enable simple and efficient erection,” said Thibaut Le Besnerais, global product direc-tor of tower cranes at Manitowoc. “In addition, the crane’s minimal footprint makes it ideal for tight working quarters. There’s an entire customer base in North America that may not be familiar with what this crane can do, so Crane Days gives us the ideal platform to make it known.”
Thanks to the rapid-pin connection of the equipped counter jib — which is secured by anti-chute devices — erection of the MR 160 C is simplified. The jib foot can be fit by inserting into the notches of the slewing tower head, and both the hoisting and luffing winches operate by way of a rope reeving system for pinning the jib tie-bar line.
The MR 160 C on display at Crane Days was configured with the new 75 HPL 25 high-performance winch to pro-vide high speeds and simplify high-rise construction. The updated winch offers a winding capacity of 956 metres and a maximum lifting speed of 215 metres per minute.
The 75 HPL 25 winch also enables greater control over the crane’s lifting speed. The winch can lift two-times faster than the 75 LVF to shorten lifting cycles, while also offering the ability to significantly decrease line speed for greater accuracy while placing loads.
“The MR 160 C, along with the rest of the Potain range, features all of the latest breakthroughs for the tower crane industry,” Le Besnerais said.
“These include quick set-up and configuration, improved performance, a compact footprint and several other features that are sure to improve efficiency and return on investment for our customers.”
Potain MR 160 C tower crane makes its North American debut
Link-Belt Cranes is promising “a lot to like” about its soon-to-be-released 348 Series 2, 273-tonne lattice crawler crane.
First shipments of the new 348 Series 2 will begin in the fourth quarter of 2018, following final testing at the company’s Lexington, Kentucky facility.
The lattice crawler crane is equipped with a Cummins QSL 9 350 hp Tier 4 Final or Tier 3 engine option, which deliver power to a Kawasaki pump and motor package for fast, responsive, fingertip control providing simultaneous operation where it is needed.
Dual swing motors provide dynamic control for the smooth free swing all Link-Belt HYLABS are known for. As well, the operator is able to dial swing speed with volume speed controls in the cab.
Matching hydraulically driven main and auxiliary hoist drums utilize Link-Belt designed gear drives for either straight power-up or down auto-brake mode. As well, it’s able to incorporate an optional wet clutch free fall feature, if required.
New ultra-wide hoist drum laggings, an integral part of the drum itself, provide the standard 28 mm hoist rope an extra-large circumference, extending rope life and offering maximum line pull of 24,179 kg.
The Series II ECO winch system improves upon fuel economy, resulting in lower operating cost, less engine rpm under load and reduced emissions without compromising line pull with a 28 mm rope. When activated by the operator, ECO hoist provides maximum line speed with lighter loads all with the engine under 1,000 rpm. Also, standard equipped is operator-selectable auto-engine shutdown, which allows the engine to shut down automatically after extended periods of inactivity, so long as critical operating criteria are met.
Cabin The crane operator is assisted by on-board high-resolu-
tion winch-view, rear-view and non-cab side swing-view cameras to enhance jobsite visibility from within the cab. Inside operators will find a full LED system monitor and adjustable armchair-mounted controls. The ergonomic design offers the operator improved visibility, more room and a six-way adjustable seat.
An audio/visual travel and swing alarm system alerts crew members on the ground when the crane swings or travels. The capacity limiter monitoring system provides the operator with all lift information, and allows the operator to set swing and other control parameters creating virtual walls with audio, visual alarms and function kick out. The
348 Series 2 has telematics in place to give current data to forecast maintenance and service needs of the crane.
AttachmentThe new attachment on the 348 Series 2 allows the
heavy-duty boom top section to remain in place to tran-sition from conventional mode to luffing configuration, eliminating the need to change out tops.
The maximum heavy-duty boom length is 91.4 metres and maximum heavy-duty jib combination is 73.1 metres plus 42.7metres.
The maximum long-range boom length is 108.2 metres and maximum long-range jib combination is 89.9 metres plus 42.7 metres. A maximum combination of 54.8 metres of luffing boom and 73.1 metres of luffing jib provides 128 metres of attachment and a tip height of 127.7 metres.
In order to provide quick conversion from conventional style lifting to a luffing configuration, assembly has been simplified with the introduction of semi-bore weldments for pin locations; point of use storage provisions for all components; and stop cams for quick pin alignment.
A new luffing jib transport package with lifting lugs sim-plifies and expedites luffer assembly.
The rear post will scissor into place by means of alignment links. Also, the transport package comes assembled with nylon rope reeving to assist with initial luffing jib wire rope hoist reeving.
Once the rear post is in working position, all luffing jib pendant connections are made and the luffer is ready to be raised for work. All assembly is done from the ground with no work at height exposure.
Variable track positionsA pair of position track gauges offer owners variable track
positions depending on the application. The extended pos-ition provides a wide base for operations where 6.71 metres of space is available, and the retracted position reduces the footprint to 5.84 metres for tighter, more restricted environments.
Front and rear lower counterweights feature hook and pin style car body design and consist of two stacked weights at the front and rear. The top counterweight slab weighs 7,711 kg and lower weighs 9,071 kg – fitting neatly between the side frames even in fully retracted gauge.
The upper superstructure and lower carbody of the new 348 Series 2 comprise the main transport load, requiring no undecking or assist crane.
TransportTo accommodate varying transport regulations throughout
North America, the 348 Series 2 is equipped with car body jacks and quick disconnects for lower hydraulics for quick and easy installation and removal of side frames when needed. Counterweight and lattice sections of the 348 Series 2 are also configured for minimal overflow loads. A new counterweight removal system can lift up to (102,965 kg of upper counterweight.

Just like a runner wouldn’t expect to win a race injury-free wearing sandals, a con-tractor shouldn’t expect optimal safety when using a ladder.
Safety isn’t a race, but if it were, ladders wouldn’t stand a chance against low-level scissor lifts’ safe platforms, manoeuvrability or ergonom-ics. Ladders will likely always be an option when it comes to work-at-height jobs, but there is a time and place for them, and typically it’s last.
Whether young or old, short or tall, every employ-ee has the right to be safe while performing tasks on the jobsite, and high-reach work in the construction in-dustry is no exception. Proper ladder usage may seem like common sense, yet accord-ing to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), falls from a ladder remain the leading cause of death in the construction industry.
The good news? These falls are almost always prevent-able.
The problem with laddersThere will always be a time
and place for ladders and when set up and used cor-rectly, they can be a great tool for getting high-reach work done. However, setup and usage is where the problems with ladders arise, and the result of not following proper guidelines can lead to injuries and costs.
According to a Bureau of Labor Statistics study of 1,400 ladder accidents, 66 per cent who were injured had not been trained on how to in-spect and set up the ladder. It’s evident the idea that lad-ders are convenient and show up to the jobsite ready to go is a myth, which is why they should be considered last for any job. There is, however, equipment that does show up to the jobsite ready — low-level scissor lifts; and users get more than enhanced safety.
Low-level scissor lifts allow workers to reach working heights of about 6 metres, which accounts for about 90 per cent of high-reach work. While many think a lift’s overall size is a setback, low-level units are compact and in some cases take up less space than a ladder. For in-stance, the legs of a 3.5 metre stepladder spread nearly 2 metres apart, which means the ladder consumes about 1.8 square metres of floor space. A low-level lift with a 3 metre platform, however, takes up just 70 square centi-metres of space. Both offer
the same working heights, yet the scissor lift has a 58 per cent smaller footprint.
A ladder may be fairly sim-ple to move by folding it up, but the taller it gets, the more cumbersome moving it be-comes. Not only do ladders get heavier as they get taller, but those taller heights also make it challenging to get around corners and into tight spaces. Low-level lifts, on the other hand, take lifting and awkward manoeuvring out of the equation. Operators can simply lower the units down to an overall height as low as 1.6 metres, and if it’s a self-pro-pelled lift, use the controls on the platform to navigate to the next area.
Low-level scissor lifts can never compete with ladders’ light weight, but some of the lightest scissor lift models can be used on tile, laminate and raised floors without the risk of damage. Some push-around units weigh just 260 kg.
Rise above riskHigh-reach work comes
with challenges, and when using a ladder to perform that work, those challenges be-come compounded and can test the human body. For ex-ample, HVAC and plumbing technicians installing pipes and ductwork overhead need ample materials and tools as the job progresses. When they’ve completed one sec-tion, they must step down, move the ladder, grab more materials and climb back up. This not only is inefficient, but the repetitive climbing can cause injuries to knees and hips, and standing on the rungs for long periods can lead to painful plantar fasciitis. This scenario also sets the installer up for a fall.
In addition, once workers are on the ladder their lateral reach is limited, restricting how much work they can accomplish in one spot. As a result, many are tempted to — and often do — overreach and risk the ladder toppling over. These reasons are why improper ladder usage con-tinues to make OSHA’s Top 10 most cited violations, year after year. In fact, according to the last study provided by the Center for Disease control, 81 per cent of all fall injuries among construction workers in 2011 involved a ladder.
Lifts can hold as much as 340kg and offer as much as 1.5 square metres of plat-form space, including their extensions. That’s plenty of capacity for ample materials and supplies. Also, loading the lift with those supplies is substantially easier and less taxing on the body. And because workers can load the lift with more materials, they make fewer trips up and down, which enhances pro-
ductivity. In addition, some units feature integrated pipe racks, which give installers a place to rest longer materials. These types of features help boost efficiency while main-taining safety.
Providing all employees, whether 25 or 55, with equip-ment that allows them to do their jobs safely and effi-ciently not only minimizes their risk of injuries, but also demonstrates that employers value their workers and the time they dedicate to their businesses.

New technologies are able to solve several operational challenges faced by fleet managers, Terex Utilities told participants in the 27th Annual Canadian Utility
Fleet Forum in Toronto, Ontario.
The event format pro-v i d e s o p e n d i s c u s s i o n between fleet managers and equipment manufac-
turers. In Canada, Terex Utilities partnered with its dealers Wajax and Com-mercial Equipment Corp. for the event.
The Terex Utilities pres-
entation featured several new technologies and oper-ational aid concepts that are designed to provide solutions for safety and productivity challenges.
Load alertThe newest technolo-
gies from Terex Utilities includes wireless load mon-itoring for digger derricks, load alert for monitoring jib and basket weights on aerial devices and the Z45 Utility Substation Articu-lating Boom Lift.
The wireless load mon-itor for digger derricks
provides operators with the ability to determine the ac-tual load being lifted. Load
alert helps operators know if the boom condition is nearing its capacity or over-loaded through visible and audible alarms. Optionally, the system can send email and text notifications to designated personnel when an alarm condition occurs. Load Alert, for aerial lifts, monitors boom angle, jib angle and length, the winch line distance from the plat-form pivot point and basket and jib load.
“The Z45 Utility Sub-station Articulating Boom Lift, a self-propelled aerial from our sister company G e n i e , w i t h i n s u l a t e d boom tip, evolved out of discussions we had with c u s t o m e r s w h o w e r e looking for a solution to operating in substations,” said Joe Caywood, Terex Utilities director of mar-keting.
Terex Utilities also shared two other concepts with forum attendees in order to gain feedback.
Object detectionOu t r ig g e r o b j e c t d e -
t e c t i o n w o u l d p re v e nt outrigger deployment if an object is in the way, and a positive lanyard attach-ment would provide audio and visual warnings to the operator when controls are engaged and the lanyard has not been attached.
“By listening to the cus-tomer and using that input throughout the design pro-cess, we are able to offer innovations that aid crews to follow their companies’ safe work practices,” said Caywood.
The company also fea-t u re d t h e n e w O p t i ma Series Aerial Device, with additional side reach, im-proved boom speeds, lower ground access and lower travel height.
In addition, the com-pletely redesigned Terex 330 and 650 Auger Drills that feature enhancements, such as radio remote con-trols, drill depth monitoring and return to hole center feature, that allow the oper-ator to focus on drilling in the most productive man-ner possible.

Maintenance staff at Arcelor-Mittal’s Mine de Mont-Wright in Quebec are now able to reach new heights, thanks to a custom solution created by Manulift.
The Mont-Wright mine is one of the largest open-pit iron ore mines in North America. Naturally, a large mine requires big machines to extract the ore.
To facilitate maintenance on the machines, ArcelorMit-tal required a telehandler and custom basket with frontal entry.
“They were looking for a special basket, and no one was able to deliver on their specs. When they called us, we said we would make it happen,” said Michel Robert, director of marketing and communications for Ma-nulift.
Working with its in-house team of engineers and weld-ers, Manulift built the basket from scratch.
When complete, the 2 x 1 x 1.3 metre basket was equipped with the requested frontal opening, which en-abled staff to walk outside of the basket to complete maintenance safely.
“We worked for several months to make sure what they wanted was done, legal and safe at the same time,” Robert said. “It seems like
something quite simple, but it was a major project.”
Manulift also designed the procedure that would allow staff to exit the basket safely and legally.
“When you’re up, you’re not allowed to go out of the basket, or open the door. We were able to make it bigger and have a frontal opening they could open with a cer-tain procedure,” Robert said. “We wrote that procedure to make sure no one is going to be able to get hurt.”
The custom basket is paired with the Merlo Roto 60.24 MCSS.
With a 6,000-kg capacity and 24 metres of reach, the continuous rotation of the Roto turret also provides a safety advantage by operat-ing within the confines of its stabilizers.
“The cab and the turret will rotate inside the stabilizer. If you’re in a small space,
you know if your stabilizer is out, you’re not going to hit something by turning in the 360-degree rotation,” Robert said.
The Roto 60.24 is also the
only machine of its kind to feature a cab that tilts up to 18 degrees.
“You’re not breaking your neck to look up. You just tilt the cab,” Robert said.

By Dan PeltonIt is plain to see that steel piles are both uniform and ver-satile. They can be deployed in applications ranging from fencing to decks, building additions to garages and, when accompanied by a full foundation, steel piles can take on the role of deep footings.
Premade under factory conditions, steel pilings boast a structural consistency that results in less time-consuming, on-site building inspections.
If these attributes are not enough, there is now a plasma cutting technology that further enhances the piles’ appeal.
MotoCut, a company based in Finland, has introduced a fully-automated, self-contained P-400 plasma cutter that runs off any 13-to-20 ton hydraulic excavator with a hammer line and tilt-rotator. The computer-controlled cutting process increases both quality and productivity. The pile cutter may be operated solely by the excavator driver without the need for extra labour.
While MotoCut is a relatively new company that started in 2012, it possesses a wealth of experience in the indus-try and has established a global network of experienced distributors, including Pinnacle Drilling Products (PDP) that has locations in Burnaby, BC and Calgary, Alberta.
“Pinnacle Drilling Products, in conjunction with its part-ner Motocut, offer a full installation, commissioning and operator training package as part of the support provided with the purchase of the unit,” said PDP’s Simon Bennett. “In addition, PDP has all wear parts, and critical spares readily available.”
Plasma cutting is a process that cuts through electrically conductive materials by means of an accelerated jet of hot plasma. It involves an electrical plasma arc, which is used to melt the metal and when compressed air is blown through a nozzle at high velocity towards the molten metal, it is then blown away; thereby cutting through the steel pile.
The nature of plasma cutting does not allow it to be used on such things as concrete or wood, since they are not electrically conductive. MotoCut, however, does have a product line that deals with concrete cutting.
The P-400 plasma cutter obtains its power from the ex-
cavator’s hammer line hydraulics. Oil is fed to the hammer line at a rate of 151 litres per minute at 2,900 psi, in order to start the hydraulic generator. The excavator needs a minimum 13,000 kg capacity, so it may lift both the P-400 and the offcut steel pile.
“When piles are cut with the MotoCut P-400, the cut offs do not need any rework and they can be easily be spliced,” Bennett said.
The cutting speed of the P-400 is 51 cm per minute, but Bennett figures the more important benefits are not ne-cessarily the speed of the machine, but the time and cost savings that come from handling the offcuts and that the cut offs do not need rework.
The thought process behind the development of the P-400 is perhaps best summarized by the mission state-ment of MotoCut: “Our mission is to make the excavator more versatile and more cost-effective, as well as safer to use, thereby producing competitive advantages for our customers.”
Cut steel piles without the need to rework
Kinshofer’s P-Series orange peel grapples are more than four decades in the making.
The P-Series hydraulic system is fully enclosed and pro-tected, reducing the risk of damage to hoses and other components. As well, the grapple’s unique tine design enhan-ces material penetration, increasing the amount contractors can safely secure in one cycle and saving time on the jobsite.
“We’ve spent 42 years researching and testing, in collab-oration with our subsidiaries and clients, to develop the best orange peel grabs on the market,” said Francois Martin, general manager of Kinshofer North America. “During this time, we’ve spent countless hours ensuring components are FEA optimized to improve the attachment’s lifespan while providing top of the line speed and force.”
The P-Series orange peel grapples handle loads up to 3 cubic metres within one cycle and are available with three, four or five tines. The grabs also come in four different tine profiles including; fully closing, half closing, pointed and wide style pointed, which provide an optimized solution for any material. The slim design of the tines guarantees maximum penetration of scrap and demolition piles.
The attachment’s hydraulic system is completely protected through its yoke system design. This prevents material from falling into the system and damaging components or hoses, a common problem in demolition and recycling applications. Kinshofer’s hydraulic cylinders are fitted with replaceable piston rod protection that is hydraulically cushioned for added durability. Removable covers provide quick access to the hoses, oil distribution system and grease points for easy serviceability.
The system is fully integrated with a heavy-duty slewing ring, which allows for 360-degree continuous rotation and ensures optimum force during operation. Kinshofer also designed the robust slewing ring to withstand the stress and excessive loads of different operating styles, extending the grapple’s service life. The non-return valve, located directly under the rotation device, retains the grapple’s load to increase safety during unintended pressure drops.
Kinshofer orange peel grapples are FEA optimized, which translates to a 10 per cent weight reduction at 20 per cent stress reduction, and their overall structural parameters are maximized to meet the toughest requirements and increase longevity. To further improve durability, Kinshofer manufactures its tines and wear plates with wear-resistant 400 HB steel and its weld-on tips with high-resistant 500 HB steel.
The tine heads and main bearing are widely spaced to reduce the face pressure in the bushings, as well as absorb distortion if the grab is overloaded. The induction-hardened pins are seated in steel bushings and the lateral thrust discs provide a solid support for the tines and also reduce wear during operation.
The P-Series standard package includes the grab, rotator or integrated slewing ring rotation, head plate and non-re-turn valve. A hose guard is available as well as a bolt-on bottom plate with a welded lifting eye to hang a magnet. Furthermore, a heavy-duty, rigid-mount model with three tines and a larger surface bearing is available to handle bulky scrap material. The attachments are available for excavators with a carrier weight ranging from 16 to 88 tons.

Ditch Doctor is now able to tackle both wet and dry material.
The Nova Scotia based attachment company has adapted its original design to incorporate a scroll case that allows the Ditch Doctor to expand its capabilities.
“The old one worked in wetter conditions, which had limits,” said Adam Fisher, the creator of Ditch Doctor. “The new one will work in semi-wet to dry conditions. It opens up a whole new industry, which would be municipal roadways and municipal drainage.”
The Ditch Doctor attaches to a 13 to 20-ton hydraulic excavator and uses a rotary wheel to grind silt or plant material that’s settled in the ditch.
As the attachment grinds, it also ejects the material onto either side of the ditch. In turn, the attachment im-mediately creates a viable ditch.
The Ditch Doctor attach-ment is also capable of creating a two-stage ditch and works in up to three feet of water.
Fisher compared the scroll case to a battery on a drill that is interchangeable with other products.
“It can be replaced to do different jobs. It’s a multi-purpose attachment now,”
Fisher said. “We have some plans on implementing some other scroll cases to do some different jobs as well.”
The first new version of the attachment was sold to a contractor in Ontario to tackle wetland management and municipal roadways.
Ditch Doctor originFisher operates his own
dredging business in Glen-holme, Nova Scotia.
About 17 years ago he began designing the Ditch Doctor attachment to help with ditch remediation. Throughout the early 2000s the Ditch Doctor was field tested through jobs at Fish-er’s business.
Fisher eventually decided to manufacture the attach-ment and sold the first unit last year.
As the ditch doctor shoots the obstructing material onto the ditch embankment, the spoil is self-levelling, elim-inating the need to truck the material away to another lo-cation.
The method also avoids destroying vegetation on the ditch slope, which helps prevent erosion. Ditch-side vegetation generally grows back within two to three weeks.
The Ditch Doctor requires similar hydraulic power as a flail forestry mower.

Solesbee’s blade-mounted dozer rakes are able to mount on nearly any dozer blade without customiza-tion, thanks to extended upright with multiple holes.
The rakes are suitable for land clearing, raking brush, piling trees and branches.
The C-curve design rolls brush and debris, making it easy to windrow ma-terial while minimizing the amount of dirt pushed with it.
“Our dozer rakes are the most cost effective and con-venient solution available,” said David Jenkins, president of Solesbee’s Equipment & Attachments LLC.
“Since we design each model of our rakes to fit multiple dozer blades, we have them in stock and ready to ship to customers the next day.”
Solesbee’s also offers the ability to customize its rakes on site by lining up the holes on the extended
uprights to nearly any dozer blade.
The rakes also include e v e r y t h i n g n e e d e d t o mount the attachment, such as pins and brackets. A qualified welder can install the brackets on the dozer in as little as two hours.
Once installed, it’s easy to manually mount and re-move the rake as needed.
As well, additional brack-et sets are available for use with multiple dozers or when upgrading to a new dozer.
The rake is avai lable with a full range of teeth for optimal debris clearing in a variety of applications. All rakes feature 5-cm-wide hardened steel teeth for use in harsh environments.
Solesbee’s standard teeth are 50 cm long, and option-al 35 to 61 cm lengths are also available.
In addition, customers can choose from a variety of teeth quantities and spa-cing options.
Allu’s new Processor HD series is designed to convert any excavator into a mixing tool capable of pene-trating a variety of difficult material.
The two new attachments are suitable for tackling a range of ma-terial, from clay, silt, peat, sludge and sediment, to dredged material and contaminated soil.
Processor 300 HDWorking to a depth of 3 metres,
and with a weight of 2,095 kg, the Processor 300 HD is made from wear resistant steel, with a stem that’s engineered for strength while main-taining a light weight.
Powered by the excavator’s hydraul-ic system, and benefitting from its ability to reach difficult or soft areas, the Processor 300 HD is able to mix materials anywhere the excavator travels. This means that binders or chemical agents can be delivered to the area of the highest mixing shear by an attached 80 mm diameter pipe, and injected via a nozzle located between the mixing drums.
The 300 HD is equipped with automatic torque adjustment valves located between the two hydraulic motors, with drum rpm and tem-perature sensors, as well as sensors for oil leakage detection inside the frame construction. This allows the excavator operator to control the rotational direction of the drums to adjust for the most effective mixing. Extension tubes of 2 or 3 metres are also available as options for added working depth. These features make it the ideal tool for civil engineering, demolition, site remediation and coastal facility ground stabilization projects.
Processor 500 HDThe Processor 500 HD differs from
the smaller 300 HD by size and depth, by being able to work to a depth of 5 metres with a weight of 2,445 kg. De-spite its ability, the wear resistant steel stem is both nimble and streamlined, and is again powered by the excav-ator’s hydraulic system. It is able to reach difficult or soft areas, meaning
that the Processor 500 HD can mix materials everywhere the excavator goes, with binders or chemical agents being delivered to the area of the highest mixing shear by an attached 80 mm diameter pipe.
Like its smaller sibling, the 500 HD is equipped with automatic torque adjustment valves located between the two hydraulic motors, with drum rpm and temperature sensors, as well as sensors for oil leakage detection, located inside the frame construction. The excavator operator controls the rotational direction of the drums to adjust for most effective mixing. Extension tubes are also available as options for added working depth.
Both Allu Processors provide a var-iety of applications, as they essentially reach, mix and process whether the material is wet or dry.
This has made the attachments suit-able in constructing temporary roads, solidification and soil remediation projects, dealing with contaminated soil, excavation and pipeline works, as well as oil ponds and sand acid tar.

Shown here in the early 1960s, is a Michigan Model 85 Series II front end loader just off the assembly line. Clark Equipment Ltd., based in Benton Harbour, Michigan, had opened a plant in St. Thomas, Ontario a few years earlier to supply the rapidly expanding Canadian market with forklifts, loaders and elevating scrapers.
This loader was equipped with an op-tional four-in-one bucket attachment. Pioneered by Wisconsin-based Drott Manufacturing Ltd. this bucket concept enhanced loader versatility beyond just the loading of material. It didn't take long for municipalities and smaller contractors to see the multi-use potential with just a single machine.
The St. Thomas Clark plant produced various sized loaders up to the massive
Michigan Model 475 weighing in at 175 tonnes and powered by two Cummins diesel engines for a total of 900 kW. The Model 85 Series II (pictured here) was a straight frame, rear-wheel steer unit and was powered by a 4-71 GM two-stroke diesel. By the early 1970s Clark Equipment had updated their loader lineup to the industry-standard articulated steering.

After more than a decade of development in the design and manufacturing of hydraulic rippers, Xcentric Ripper has taken its range to a new level with the release of the all new XR Mining Series.
According to the com-pany, the Xcentric Ripper outperforms traditional hydraulic hammers and static rippers, particularly in medium hardness rock with natural fracturing and layers.
Using patented impact vibration accumulation technology, the hydraulic ripper attachment works with the natural rigidity of the rock. The vibrations that are produced shake the ma-terial to deepen cracks for easier breakup.
While the working tech-nology is based on the standard series, the new Mining Series is reinforced with a remodelled working platform, which delivers a higher energy impact force to the work tool with a lower frequency. Larger and heav-ier eccentric gears are now machined from a single bil-let of steel and designed to allow for equal weight dis-tribution side-to-side and
direct impact energy ver-tically. The lower pivot arm and housing is reinforced to limit wear where the ripper typically encounters materi-al. As well, the ripper arm or beak has been remodelled and reinforced with Hardox steel.
The XR Mining Series also has a narrower body profile, making it ideal for tunnel-ling or operating in confined areas.
Like the regular series that came before it, the Mining Series is capable of for frozen ground excavation, rock ex-cavation, quarrying, surface and underground mining, oil sands excavation, utility project installations, pipe-line trenching, demolition, slag recycling, dredging, and even underwater applica-tions.
One of Xcentric Ripper’s customers in the pile and dre dging industr y was searching for an excavation tool that could be deployed for a three-month project, which included the removal of more than 36,500 metres of basalt from a shoreline to make way for a new harbour and breakwater for incoming marine traffic. The super-intendent saw video of the
new XR Mining Series work-ing online and decided to give the new version of the hydraulic ripper a chance.
“We have the XR82 model working on one machine and a clam shell bucket for dredging on the other,” he said. “We needed a tool that would work well under water and the XR82 has performed to our expectations so far. I see it proving valuable as an asset in our equipment fleet and working really well on some of our more specialty projects.”

An Xcentric revolution in excavation
Continuing its “smart-growth” strategy of delivering new product innovations, Indeco North America has introduced the IMH Series, the company’s latest line of high-perform-ance hydraulic mulching heads.
Specifically designed for a broad range of land clearing, site preparation, invasive vegetation management and storm damage removal applications, the new IMH Series utilizes an excavator’s auxiliary hydraulics and is tailored to fit a wide range of carriers from 5 to 50 tons.
“These new mulching heads represent the culmination of over 40 years of experience in the hydraulic attachment business,” said Mike Fischer, CEO of Indeco North Amer-ica. “The end result is a product line that not only achieves superior production results in the field but also provides real, lasting benefits to the environment. ”
The IMH mulching heads are available in 10 direct-drive and belt-driven models and feature Hardox components and bodies to improve service life.
The mulching heads are suitable for maintaining right-of-way for pipe and power lines; power distribution and substation facilities; highways and roads; telecommuni-cation lines; residential and commercial farms as well as ski resorts and other specialized field maintenance venues.
Compared to the cost of manual clearing, using a crew of workers with chainsaws and chippers or environmentally damaging burning, Indeco’s IMH series is an easy, one-step, environment-friendly process that puts unwanted vegetation back into the ecosystem as mulch to protect the soil from wind and rain erosion while providing it with beneficial microorganisms to make it more fertile.
As well, the attachment is built with a single piece shaft and severe duty bearings; a unique tooth design for optimal cutting and interchangeable mounting brackets.
Indeco launches new mulching head line
Using impact vibration accumulation technology, the hydraulic ripper works with the natural rigidity of the rock.
