Have you Noticed the New Lighting? We have been making some energy efficient improvements around the facility by enhancing the lighting in the Church and parking lot. New energy efficient light bulbs were installed which has helped brighten the Church, especially in the transept areas. We received a grant to help fund the new lighting and received a rebate from Pepco for being more energy efficient. The brighter lights in the parking lot help with visibility and security.

Thank you, Nathan

Have you recently visited the St. Francis statue between the Church and Rectory? If not, stroll by to see the wonderful improvements made by Nathan Nguyen, as an Eagle Project for Boy Scout Troop 1444 at Transfiguration Church. Nathan removed the old path and created a new stone pathway, along with providing a new bench for reflection. The area around the statue is beautiful and available for all to enjoy. Thank you, Nathan, for all your hard work.

Weekend Parish Office Closings

In an effort to help reduce our budget shortfall as recently outlined in Fr. David’s letter to the parish, the Parish Office will not be open on Sundays beginning July 1. Our office will be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to assist our parishioners. Hope everyone has a great summer!

From the Desk of Our Pastor

As everyone is aware we have had no air conditioning in the Church for the last three weeks. The one compressor is completely down due to grounding when power is called for. The second compressor has a leak and is therefore low on refrigerant. Because the system is so old and is using refrigerant that is expensive, hard to find and will no longer be produced in 2020, replacing the system is recommended. We have received one bid and expect two more bids to come in. Catholic Mutual, our insurer, is working with us with regards to the availability of funds from an equipment insurance policy. Please be patient and bear with us as we work on getting the AC up as soon as possible. Thank you. Yours in Christ,

Gabriel Project

The Gabriel Project assists needy women and women in crisis pregnancies in Montgomery County. Women volunteers (especially bilingual) are needed to stay in touch with client mothers. This includes keeping in touch with them via phone or email during their pregnancy, bringing them needed items such as diapers, baby clothes, etc. that are provided by the Gabriel Project, and praying for them. The average time commitment would be approximately 2 - 4 hours per month (or less). Men are also needed to pick up donations once or twice per month. E-mail and daily prayer supporters are also needed. For more information, please call Toni Wohleber (301) 384-1073, or e-mail Carmen Rojas at [email protected].

Mystical Word

L.J. Milone, Director of Adult Faith Formation

The culture we live in is secular. All of us – believers and non-believers – live in a cultural atmosphere that does not need to include God. Our society can imagine a good, flourishing life without reference to the transcendent. In other words, our contemporary way of living, thinking, and experiencing presumes this life is all there is. What if this is true? What does that imply about life? Is everything just meaningless? There is a tremendously honest book of the Bible that asks these questions, Ecclesiastes. The author wonders whether life is meaningless, if this is all there is. As such, it is a much needed and incredibly rich scriptural meditation for our secular culture. Ecclesiastes probes a common set of experiences whether or not we have faith, namely, the weariness of everyday life, its apparent absurdity, the seeming godlessness of contemporary experience, the relentlessness of time, the ephemeral nature of existence, and, above all, death. How to live with faith in God amidst these very trying and deeply felt experiences is the subject of Ecclesiastes.

Hence, we will reflect on Ecclesiastes all through the summer. To follow along with these reflections, I suggest you read Ecclesiastes in one sitting. I highly suggest you do so prayerfully, with generous silence and trusting God will show you the message you need. Then, as each weekly reflection appears, go back and read the covered material.

The Hebrew name for the book and its author is “Qoheleth.” Scholars do not know who this is. Likely, both Qoheleth and an editor wrote Ecclesiastes in its present form. The editor seems to have added 1:1 and a sort of epilogue in 12:9-14. Qoheleth remains shrouded in mystery, but he likely wrote around 350 BCE. “Qoheleth” means something like “Teacher” or “Preacher.” Ecclesiastes 1:1 says, “The words of David’s son, Qoheleth, king in Jerusalem.” So, the editor attributes the book to King Solomon to give his work authority and link it with Israel’s wisdom tradition.

Ecclesiastes is like a journal containing meditations on life. Many scholars agree that Ecclesiastes is divided into four sections. The first is the title, then 1:2 – 6:8 consisting of Qoheleth’s main theme and his investigation of life, then 6:9 – 12:8 consisting of his conclusions about life and various proverbs, and the epilogue in 12:9 – 14 ends the book. One theme unites all Qoheleth’s reflections: everything is hevel or “vanity.”

This is Qoheleth’s message, and it is a subtle one requiring a deep interpretation. Thus, I will interpret the book in both a literal and spiritual way. After the title comes the main message of Ecclesiastes: “Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, vanity of vanities! All things are

vanity” (1:2)! The Hebrew word most Bibles translate as “vanity” is hevel. “X of x” is a Hebrew construction for the superlative, hence “vanity of vanities is supreme vanity. So, hevel is an important concept with layers of meaning. I detect at least five meanings to hevel: 1) vapor, breath, or air, 2) impermanence, 3) meaninglessness, futility, absurdity, 4) enigma and mystery, and 5) the divine nothingness. First, Hebrew does not use a lot of

high-concept words but speaks often in metaphor. Hence, the literal meaning of hevel is vapor, air, or breath. It can also mean “spirit” (3:21).

Second, metaphorically, hevel can mean impermanence. This is a hard lesson about life. Just like vapors are short-lived, all of reality is passing away. We’re here today and gone tomorrow. This is a crucial insight for Qoheleth. Life is chaotic because it is so fleeting. His reflections are an attempt to see whether there is anything permanent in life.

The third meaning of hevel is hard to take as well. Qoheleth finds everything is meaningless in the face of life’s passing nature. Death comes for the wise and the fool. He questions the point of doing anything. Life seems absurd and uncontrollable. Traditionally, Christians have interpreted this futility relative to God. Nothing makes sense apart from God and nothing is absolute because only God is absolute. Still, there is almost a nihilistic sense behind hevel.

Hevel, fourthly, means enigma or mystery. Qoheleth is not talking about a whodunnit novel, which implies a solution. Life, and above all God, is essentially an unknowable enigma. Throughout the book, particularly in the second half, Qoheleth keeps asking, “Who knows?” What happens to us both before and after death is beyond us. God is to be accepted as mystery beyond comprehension. As he probes the various experiences of life, he finds that just as much as they are transitory and futile, they are enigmas, too. Paradoxically, they still carry the presence of the Mystery of God.

Mystical Word continued from page five.

Hevel is air, breath, non-substantial and, hence, nothing. Thus, I add a mystical interpretation to hevel. It refers to the divine nothingness present within all things. If all things are hevel, then, the reality of all things is the divine nothingness. We come to know this essential truth when we accept hevel, the chaotic and enigmatic nothingness of God in everyday life. Qoheleth invites us to plumb the depths of nothingness to discover what is already there – the divine nothingness. In doing so, Qoheleth rips away our cherished attempts to make life meaningful, our distractions from reality, our projects for securing permanent happiness in this life. All this “toil” is simply an avoidance of the nothingness of life.

Qoheleth provides a few basics about life with which everyone can agree. We can’t control life. Time marches on relentlessly. Life can be chaotic, absurd, and feel meaningless. Daily life is repetitive and monotonous. And, death comes for everyone. Here we have a basis of experience with which we can relate to those who don’t care about faith. Qoheleth offers us a sort of holy nihilism where nothing seems to matter, nothing lasts forever, yet precisely within this meaninglessness and instability of life there is the divine nothingness. Hevel means taking the mystery of God utterly seriously. The divine nothingness is one with all our “godless” experiences in life. These very experiences can open us to realizing our own oneness with God when we accept them as hevel. In summary, Qoheleth’s message is that all things are vapor; all things are passing away; all things are meaningless; all things are enigmatic; and, all things are the divine nothingness.
