The family is still trying to come to terms with the death, trying to make sense of what happened, and wondering what police are doing to investigate 16-year-old Justin Henry’s drowning.

Hurt and bewildered, a cousin even suggests murder: “He may have been pushed. He told a boy he was too tired to jump again. Maybe, knowing it was dangerous, and not for him, that’s what he said to get out of it. If he were pushed … well, that’s called murder.

”Where were the police? Aren’t they professional divers? Don’t they have lights and boats and are able to search at night? If they had, they would have found him. It may have been a bit risky, but isn’t that what they are paid for?”

Sitting on the front porch of their Rock Hole home on Wednesday, only 24 hours after police found Justin’s body in 39 feet of water, 50 yards off the cliffs at Pedro Castle, his grandmother, sisters and cousins

could only wonder – and worry – and speculate -- and hope.

“We are trying to figure it out, to know what happened,” said grandmother Dorothy, 59, dark-haired, thickset, occupying a corner of the porch at a modest table. Behind her, a gold-ornamented Christmas tree perches on a table, leaving just enough space to enter the doorway to the sitting room and, beyond, Justin’s bedroom.

Miss Dorothy has seen more than one death in the family.

“It’s 12 years to the day that cousin Robert died. He was killed on a motorbike on the Esterley Tibbetts

Highway. I think he was the first accident on the highway,” she said.

Grandson Akim, Justin’s little brother, died 10 years ago at the age of only 5 months, from double pneumonia.“Three daughters and grandmother are all that’s left now,” said a cousin. “There was never a father, and for a boy raised by two women, Justin came out pretty good. Boatswain Bay Presbyterian Church celebrated Christmas Day with both a Cantata, from the adult choir and a drama presentation from the children.

The service began with newlyweds Annie and Dillion Ebanks lighting the Advent candle, a symbol of the hope and Joy that Christmas brings into the world.

It was the children who helped bring that story to life with their drama skit, with “What Gift Will You Bring?”

It was a Nativity play, with a twist - all the costumes and props had a Cayman-of-yesteryear theme, with the children dressed in traditional Cayman outfits, complete with silver thatch-work hats. There was a scene at a Cayman market, too where each of the children decided what gift they were going to bring the baby Jesus from a selection of Cayman fruits and vegetables.

The play was narrated by Jenae Whittaker. Sherena Anglin played Mary, Nicky Sanchez as Joseph, and Victoria Ebanks as the Angel Gabriel. Christopher Bustillo played the part of the drummer boy.

Another scene from the play also depicted Cayman’s past, with Cayman turtlers played by Rory Barrett, Emmanuel Tomkins and

Nicholas Ritch. After the drama skit, more than

40 children entertained proud parents, siblings and friends in the congregation with a selection of favourite Christmas poetry recitations including “That First Christmas” recited by Javari Dixon, “Just a Jesus Baby” recited by Iyanna Bennett, and “Jesus Loves Me” from Roman Rivers-Berry, to name just a few.

Next, bases, tenors, altos and sopranos all came together in perfect harmony for the adult choir’s cantata, “Mary Did You Know?”

It was a Christmas musical box, filled to the brim with timeless songs and carols, such as “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”, “Angels from the Realms of Glory”, “Away in a Manger” and of course the title song, “Mary Did You Know?”

Police investigate blood pool

Detectives have launched an investigation following the discovery of a large pool of blood near a George Town plaza.Shortly after 9.00 am yesterday (Wednesday 29 December) police received a report that there was, what appeared to be, blood on the sidewalk near Ed’s Plaza, North Sound Way, George Town. When officers arrived at the location they found a large pool of blood. Forensic tests were carried out yesterday and again last night. The tests have confirmed that the blood is human.Detective Superintendent Marlon Bodden said; “It is possible that someone has been injured. If that is the case we need to find that individual to make sure that he or she has received medical treatment. Searches of the area and checks with medical practitioners have, to date, proved negative. Investigations are continuing”Anyone who was in the area of Ed’s Plaza on Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, and has any information which could assist officers as they try to establish what happened, is asked to contact George Town CID on 949-4222. If you know of anyone who has sustained a recent unexplained injury then please contact the police. Information can also be passed on the RCIPS tip-line 949-7777 or via Crime Stoppers 800-8477(TIPS).

In the late afternoon of Boxing Day, Justin and four friends -- three women and a younger male -- were cliff jumping at the Pedro Castle bluffs when the 16-year-old disappeared.

“They were not his regular friends, “said one of the family. “We don’t know who the company was that were with him. He told his mother he was going to Kaibo, and within an hour-and-a-half of leaving home, he was at Pedro – and then we got a call that someone was missing.”

As the young male searched among the rocks, the girls called police, who appeared between 30 minutes and 45 minutes later.

When a boat and helicopter search yielded nothing, and the hunt was called off, the family knew it was trouble.

“We all went over there and we couldn’t get any information. Everyone had left,” said another of the family. “I spoke to the boy and he was disoriented. He didn’t know if he was in the water or not, or with Justin or not. He said at one point he tried to help, but had to let him go because he was too big to handle.”

Police and family accounts diverge at that point. Police say the search resumed at first light, divers and boats assembling at 6:30 to map a plan.

“We were out there at 6:30, 7:00, and it was just the family,” a cousin said. “No one else was there. That’s why he was never found until 9:30.

“We don’t have knowledge of him going there before, but, knowing Justin, I can’t imagine him, knowing the dangers, jumping in,” she

said. Confusion, disorientation, contradiction, the family is beset, fielding questions as neighbours and friends cross the small yard to hang over the porch wall. Sisters Jesanna, 22, Janaya, 11 and Jahsara, 5, drift in and out. Mother Lisa, 40, is at the Cayman Islands Hospital, signing a release so undertakers can organise a ceremony.

Both she and Miss Dorothy are recently familiar with the hospital, admitted the night of the accident with high blood pressure from the upset and stress, unlikely to ease in the coming days.

“It’s an unexpected expense and times are difficult,” said a family friend, speculating on the price of a funeral and the parlour that will mount it.

“Bodden or Churchill’s, it doesn’t really matter who does it,” offers another. “He’s going to the same place.”

“He was an obedient boy, and not a rude child, “ a cousin said. “If we had told him not to go there, he never would have gone. But he was a teenager, and when parents don’t want you to do something, they’ll find a way.”

Miss Dorothy shows off a seven-foot case packed with Justin’s trophies, most earned for his football, although one is from the Cricket Association.

“He played for the Cayman Athletic Sports Club. It was on his t-shirt when he jumped in,” said one sister, displaying his red-and-blue number 21. “He mostly wore 14, though.”

John Gray awarded Justin “Sports Day Champion Boy” earlier this year, the athletic club awarded him as “team

member” for the under-17 national unit in 2010-2011; the Football Association named him “Defender of the Year” on its under-15 team in 2009-2010 and he was the Cricket Association’s “Man of the Year” in 2008. “I can’t even close this,” said Miss Dorothy, stuffing ribbons and medallions back into their brimming box.

“He was in the George Town Primary league as well,” offered another cousin. “Football was his life. He was injured a couple of times. He broke his foot once and it was the worst days of his life. He couldn’t play. He was crying with frustration.

“They should make swimming there illegal,” she said. “Fence it off and put signs around. Then, if you go in, you know it’s at your own risk.”

Told that police had earlier in the morning proposed exactly that, she repeated the information to the rest of the group.

Perhaps the move is overdue. Joint Marine Unit statistics attest to the danger: Since 2003, four rescue missions have been mounted to the area, saving seven people. Three deaths have been recorded: March 2003, November 2009 and Justin’s Boxing Day tragedy. Since July, police have speculated – albeit never proved -- that missing 25-year-old Jamaican Kerran Baker may have been pushed into the water.

His 17th birthday, on 24 February, promises to be a somber occasion.

“He was the oldest and the strongest of them all -- and now he’s gone,” said Miss Dorothy.

Rocky Road: Ice cream spill freezes Ind. traffic

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Police

say 40,000 pounds of ice cream

have spilled from a semitrailer in

Fort Wayne, Ind., closing two lanes

of southbound Interstate 69 at the

start of the holiday weekend.

The Journal Gazette and WPTA-

TV report the spill happened about

4 p.m. Friday and was expected to

take as long as six hours to clean up

completely. One southbound lane

remained open.

Police say the truck was trying

to enter the interstate from a ramp

when it tipped, spilling cartons of

vanilla, caramel praline crunch and

other flavours of Edy’s ice cream

onto the interstate.

Police say the truck driver had

minor injuries and was taken to a

local hospital to be checked out.

Confiscated cupcake

PEABODY, Mass. (AP) — A woman

who just flew back home from

Las Vegas says an airport security

officer confiscated her frosted

cupcake because he thought the

icing on it could be a security risk.

Rebecca Hains said the

Transportation Security Administration

agent at McCarran International

Airport took her cupcake Wednesday,

telling her its frosting was enough like

a gel to violate TSA restrictions on

allowing liquids and gels onto flights

to prevent them from being used as

explosives. “I just thought this was

terrible logic,” Hains said Friday.

Hains, who lives in Peabody, just

north of Boston, said the agent didn’t

seem concerned that the cupcake

could actually be explosive, just that

it fit some bureaucratic definition

about what was prohibited. She said

he even offered to let her eat it away

from the airport security area.

A man involved in a serious car crash yesterday died in hospital, police have said.

Dwayne Cayasso, of George Town, suffered serious injures when the Honda Civic he was driving crashed into a tree off the Linford Pierson Highway in the early hours

of Wednesday.Yesterday a spokeswoman for the

Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said: “Police can confirm that the driver of the Honda Civic, which crashed into a tree near the riding stables off Linford Pierson Highway Wednesday morning, has died.

“Hospital staff confirmed a short time ago that Dwayne Cayasso, of George Town, passed away late Thursday morning.

“His passenger, a 24-year-old man, remains in hospital in a stable condition.” Police say inquiries into the collision continue.

Man dies after car crash

Owners at West Bay’s Alfresco Restaurant declined to comment yesterday on Wednesday night’s armed robbery, the second at the popular waterfront spot, while police seek the driver of a black SUV who witnessed the getaway.

Police issued a call yesterday for the driver of the car, thought to be a Ford Explorer, to contact officers at the West Bay Criminal Investigation Division.

“The driver of a black SUV … was forced to stop the vehicle as the robbers ran from the scene,” police said.

“As the armed men ran off from Alfresco’s and turned left into Townhall Road, they ran in front of traffic, causing the black SUV to stop.”

Meanwhile, restaurant staff declined to offer any information about the robbery, while Alfresco owner Al Ebanks refused to discuss the incident.

“I have no comment”, he said, declining to say if any injuries or damage had occurred or what may have been taken.

The episode took place on Wednesday night at 9:46 when, according to a female staffer, two men entered the premises wielding guns.

They robbed the staff of an unspecified “sum of cash”, the report said, then fled on foot, running up Townhall Road, forcing the black SUV to stop.

“The first suspect,” police said, was tall, muscular and dressed in gray baggy camouflage pants and black shoes.

The report said little about the second suspect, only that he was shorter than the first and wearing a black t-shirt.

“No shots were fired,” police said.Wednesday’s incident marks the

second time Alfresco has been hit by thieves. On 30 September last year two masked and armed men entered the restaurant at 8:00pm, taking money from a chef and two customers.

Detective Constable Nathan Turner said yesterday it was “ important that the driver of the car contacts West Bay CID.”

Anyone with information about the robbery should call West Bay CID on 949 3990 or Crimestoppers 800 8477 (TIPS).

Gov’t to pay family $17.8M for military jet crashSAN DIEGO (AP) — A federal judge on Wednesday ordered the U.S. government to pay $17.8 million to a family that lost four members when a Marine Corps fighter jet crashed into their San Diego home in 2008.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller’s ruling came after a nonjury trial between the Department of Justice and the family, who sought $56 million for emotional and monetary loss.

Don Yoon lost his 36-year-old wife, Youngmi Lee Yoon; his 15-month-old daughter, Grace; his 2-month-old daughter, Rachel; and his 59-year-old mother-in-law, Seokim Kim

Lee, who was visiting from Korea to help her eldest daughter take care of their children.

Yoon said in a statement that Miller’s ruling was “thoughtful, reasoned and just.” Yoon broke down crying throughout his testimony, which came three years to the day when he buried his wife and baby girls in the same casket. He told the judge he only looks forward to the day when he can join them.

“Our family is relieved this part of the process is over, but no sum of money will ever make up for the loss of our loved ones,” he said.

The Marine Corps has said the plane suffered a mechanical failure but a series of bad decisions led the pilot — a student — to bypass a potentially safe landing at a coastal Navy base after his engine failed on Dec. 8, 2008.

Worst year in decades for elephantsJOHANNESBURG (AP) — It’s been a disastrous year for elephants, perhaps the worst since ivory sales were banned in 1989 to save the world’s largest land animals from extinction, the wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC said Thursday.

A record number of large seizures of elephant tusks represents at least 2,500 dead animals and shows that organized crime — in particular Asian syndicates — is increasingly involved in the illegal ivory trade and the poaching that feeds it, the group said.

Some of the seised tusks came from old stockpiles, the elephants having been killed years ago. It’s not clear how many elephants were recently killed

in Africa for their tusks, but experts are alarmed.

TRAFFIC’s elephant and rhino expert Tom Milliken thinks criminals may have the upper hand in the war to save rare and endangered animals.

“As most large-scale ivory seisures fail to result in any arrests, I fear the criminals are winning,” Milliken told The Associated Press.

Most cases involve ivory being smuggled from Africa into Asia, where growing wealth has fed the desire for ivory ornaments and for rhino horn that is used in traditional medicine, though scientists have proved it has no medicinal value.

“The escalation in ivory trade and

elephant and rhino killing is being driven by the Asian syndicates that are now firmly enmeshed within African societies,” Milliken said in a telephone interview from his base in Zimbabwe.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bambi, Forrest Gump and Hannibal Lecter have at least one thing in common: Their cinematic adventures were chosen by the Library of Congress to be preserved in the world’s largest archive of film, TV and sound recordings.

“The Silence of the Lambs” (1991), a harrowing psychological thriller about the cannibalistic serial killer Lecter, and “Forrest Gump” (1994), starring Tom Hanks as the guileless hero who thinks “life is like a box of chocolates,” were critical and commercial successes that won the Academy Award for Best Picture. The animated Disney classic

“Bambi” is among the most beloved movies ever made.

A majority of the 25 titles chosen this year for inclusion in the National Film Registry are lesser-known — including silent films, documentaries, avant-garde cinema and even home movies. The Library of Congress announced the selections Tuesday.

The registry began in 1989 under an act of Congress and now includes 575 films. Its aim is not to identify the best movies ever made but to preserve films with artistic, cultural or historical significance. Previous titles chosen range from “The Birth of a Nation” to

“National Lampoon’s Animal House.”“Forrest Gump” has its critical

detractors but was praised for its technical achievements, including the seamless incorporation of the title character into historical footage.

iEditorial OPINIONS

People were very quick to lay the blame for the tragic

death of Justin Henry last Monday (26) on the RCIPS or/and the Government. Justin drowned after diving into the ocean from cliffs in the Pedro Castle area along Grand Cayman’s south coast. “The police took too long to reach the scene and send for the helicopter that took over an hour to arrive.” “The Government should take the blame for not having any warning signs informing people of the danger in swimming there.” “The search was not thorough enough.” “Why hasn’t Government installed a wall there to deter people attempting to jump?”

The blame game goes on and on. The missing factor in all this is, everyone who lives here knows how dangerous jumping off the cliff at Pedro Castle is. Would putting warning signs up have made any difference? Does anyone understand how long it takes to get a police helicopter into the air? There is no crew standing by at readiness like at a fire station. Do we have the monies or resources to have a helicopter, a pilot and rescue crew in readiness? Just in case some swimmers decide to risk their lives on a dare devil jump in an area where any sensible person wouldn’t attempt without taking safety precautions first?

The authorities have consistently warned people not to swim or jump into this area and other similar locations but it is unheeded. But they take the blame when it happens.

It is a tragedy and it breaks me up when we have to report something like this. The grief to the families of the victims is almost unbearable and the pain of the loss never goes away. But it won’t happen to you or me. If it happens it will be to someone else. Unfortunately it isn’t true. It does happen to someone you know and it can happen to you. Heed the warnings. The only person to

blame is YOU!!!My point about warnings and people ignoring them is

reinforced by the staggering figure of 44 persons arrested since Wed (28) for DUI. The RCIPS said they have already locked up more people this year for DUI than they did last year after its safety campaign period had finished after the New Year! “The figure is deplorable,” said Chief Inspector Angelique Howell. Yes it is! Despite the recent accidents and deaths from drunk driving are people taking any notice? When trees and light poles can suddenly jump out into the road in front of your speeding car at the early hours of the morning along a highway with no other cars around I strongly suggest you should not be at the wheel of your car. And if you are a passenger you are risking your life and at best serious injury to your person (and other vehicles on the road) if you get in a car where you know the driver has been drinking alcohol. You are as much to blame as the person at the wheel.

So, the armed robberies continue right up to the end of 2011 with the staff of the Alfresco Restaurant, West Bay being terrorised last Wednesday (28) evening. Lightning does strike twice, especially when businesses are robbed, as a similar incident happened last year at the same restaurant with no one being charged with the crime. It was two men who robbed the premises then and it was two men again this time. Of course, no one knows anything and no one saw anything. However, we know that isn’t true. Scum will always be scum, no matter what they wear. Scum is the topmost liquid layer of a cesspool or septic tank. It stinks and it is unmistakable. Scum is worthless, contemptible, vile and loathsome. Does this describe some lowlife rat you know? Perhaps you, the scum bag, might even be reading this…….. If so, you are despicable and I hope you puke on your own vomit!

Most of us, especially if you’re a woman, start off the New Year by making resolutions to lose weight and get in shape. This mission is often easier said than done. Some last a little longer than others, but for most of us, impetus starts to fizzle soon into the next buffet engagement.

Have no fear, help is on the way. A friend of mine has a body all the men look at twice and nobody believes her real age ( she is well over ten years older than she looks), has these ten tips that work for her. This is what she told me:

Whether you are looking to lose a lot or just a few pounds or you want to exercise more to tone your body, you can create an action plan that can help you stay motivated.

Conviction: Conviction is the primal way for you to motivate yourself to exercise more or to stick to a diet. Faith in yourself is also known as self-efficacy and it means that once you believe that you can do something, no matter how hard, you do it. Those that have a lot of self-esteem believe that they have the power to make changes in themselves. Those without solid self-confidence will find that they will have a much more difficult time sticking to any fitness plan and will not exert much effort.

Support: A staunch support system of friends and family keeps almost anyone motivated to reach their goals. When a person starts a new fitness plan or diet programme, many changes need to happen. It is important to surround yourself with others that can support you and understand your personal goals. Let those around you know that you need them to support your new goal and try to include them in your objectives.

Positive Mind-set: Your enthusiasm will soar if you keep

a positive attitude towards your new fitness goals. Think about the positive aspects of a healthier lifestyle and exercise plan and keep that in mind you may be tempted to skip a day at the gym. When following any fitness plan, it is also important to remember that you may have setbacks or you may not achieve your goals as fast as you had hoped. Keeping your stance positive even during the rough times will help you stay focused on your goals.

Follow Through: You will find that you have an easier time staying motivated when you make a plan and keep at it. Without understanding each step you need to take to reach your goals, it will be harder to focus on the destination. For example, if you are trying to eat healthier, write down what foods you want to eliminate and foods your want to add to your diet. As you progress, compare your results with your plan and that will help you stay the course.

Keep Organised: Keeping organised will keeps the motivation burning to stay on the new fitness plan. If you plan on going to the gym a few times a week, you can

get everything you need ready to go the night before. Have your shoes, gym clothes and membership card by the door. Not only will this make it easier for you find exactly what you need, but it will also serve as a visual reminder of your goal. Keep your days planned out and schedule time in for healthy cooking or burning the asphalt.

Forms of Motivation: Intrinsic and extrinsic are both types of motivation. Understand what they mean and which one helps keep you motivated. Those who are intrinsically motivated do not need outside forces, such as rewards to stay focused. They have the power from within to stay motivated. Other forces, such as rewards or praise from others, motivate those who are motivated extrinsically. Most people feel motivated both ways. Understand what kind of motivation keeps you passionate.

Reward Yourself: Incentives can be a great motivator, especially in a new fitness plan. Give yourself a small reward when you meet each of your goals. This will help you get to your final goal. You may choose to buy yourself a new shirt when

you lose ten pounds or maybe go see a movie. Whatever appeals to you would stoke the flames of zeal.

Heroes: When you are trying to get a better body through a fitness plan, look for a hero. That person does not have to be famous, but anybody you look up to. Maybe it is someone you know with zest for healthy living. Use that person to emulate when your spirit wanes.

Knowledge is Power: As soon as you commit yourself to a new fitness plan, arm yourself with piles of information. Compare different diets and exercise plans. Learn the ins and outs of each one and you can make confident informed decision.

Varied Pursuits: Another great way to stay motivated is by diversifying activities. When you start to feel upset, you can set it aside and do something you really love. It might even be possible to include what you love doing to help you achieve your fitness aims.

Now I am going to try out all these tips this year and no one will recognise Georgina when she walks down the street. And see if you can guess my age, honey…..?

How to motivate yourself to a better body after the New Year

Election race neck and neckKINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaica’s two main political parties are in a neck-and-neck race to capture a majority of the country’s 63 parliamentary seats and win control of the government for the next five years.

Both sides were predicting victory after a hard-fought lead-up to yesterday’s general elections pitting Jamaica’s youngest prime minister and his center-right party against a veteran opponent who hopes to return her center-left faction to power and take a second lap as leader.

With most opinion polls putting the two parties in a virtual dead heat, candidates have scrambled for traction with undecided voters across the Caribbean island known as the birthplace of reggae and a hothouse for big-time sprinters.

Andrew Holness, a 39-year-old lawmaker who was unanimously chosen to be prime minister by his party just two months ago when predecessor Bruce Golding resigned amid anemic public backing, has tried to woo swing voters by promising new jobs in a debt-wracked nation with roughly 13 percent unemployment.

“Jamaicans are now safer, our economy is stable with a solid foundation for job creation,” Holness said in a last-minute national address touting Labor’s record.

Holness, largely seen as an unexciting but calm, pragmatic leader, said his party has started to reverse economic stagnation and effectively battled criminal gangs that have long been the scourge of the country. He has also pledged to modernize the bloated public sector without massive layoffs.

He argues that the PNP severely mismanaged the economy over its 18-year-tenure until its 2007 election loss, leading to a steady devaluation of the Jamaican dollar that cut deeply into the purchasing power of most wage earners and caused the standard of living to fall.

Meanwhile, 66-year-old opposition chief Portia Simpson Miller, a stalwart of the People’s National Party since its days as a democratic socialist faction in the 1970s, has dismissed Holness as an indecisive leader and painted

his party as hopelessly corrupt and unsympathetic to the plight of Jamaica’s many poor inhabitants.

“It is not only going to be a victory but a wipeout of the Jamaica Labor Party,” she told a crowd of cheering supporters dressed in the party’s color of orange.

Simpson Miller was born in rural poverty and grew up in a Kingston ghetto, not far from the crumbling concrete jungle made famous by Bob Marley. Also referred to as “Sista P” and “Comrade Leader,” she is known for her plain speaking style and warm interactions with supporters.

But detractors say her political style is largely superficial and she was out of her depth during her brief tenure as Jamaica’s first female prime minister between March 2006 to September 2007, when her party was narrowly voted out of power.

The winner of Thursday’s vote will face deep economic problems on this island of 2.8 million people. Jamaica’s punishing debt stands at roughly $18.6 billion, or 130 per cent of gross domestic product, a rate about 10 percentage points higher than Italy’s and 20 points lower than Greece’s.

Jamaica’s economy has been on a meager upswing, but roughly 60 percent of government spending still goes to debt and another 30 percent pays wages. That leaves just 10 percent for education, health, security and other parts of the budget.

Still, the monthlong campaign often bristled with a festive feel as cheering, horn-honking caravans of partisans attended packed rallies, waving banners and dancing to reggae tunes pounding out of big speakers.

But the campaign has also stirred some anxiety during the Christmas season as scattered incidents of violence and vandalism have been reported. Thousands of police officers and soldiers have been deployed to maintain security.

Political Ombudsman Bishop Herro Blair said Wednesday that the campaign was one of the “best we’ve ever had” in Jamaica, with just three deaths and about a half dozen woundings that he says investigators might eventually determine to be politically motivated.

In the lead-up to the 1980 elections, more than 800 people were killed in political clashes. Since then, large-scale political violence has dissipated and most killings are blamed on the drug and extortion trade.

Although most recent polls show a dead heat, the political team at the Jamaica Gleaner, the island’s largest newspaper, has predicted that Labor will capture 34 of the 63 seats, while the PNP will claim 29.

Omar Wright, a 23-year-old unemployed man voting in his first election, said a lack of jobs convinced him to vote for the opposition.

“It’s hard out here,” Douglas said on a packed corner in downtown Kingston, where vendors were selling flip flops, towels and phone cards. “I don’t think any of these politicians really know how hard it is, but we need a change.”

Nearby, Reiza Davies, a 29-year-old clothes vendor, said she was voting Labor because people in her community always do.

“Anything is better than the PNP,” she said, making a sour face.

(AP) MANILA, Philippines — Prosecutors on Thursday filed a second criminal case against former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, this time over an overpriced deal with a Chinese telecommunications giant that allegedly involved huge kickbacks.

Arroyo — who is under arrest on separate electoral fraud charges — has previously denied wrongdoing in the latest case. But under public pressure in 2008, she canceled a flagship $330 million Philippine government deal with China’s ZTE Corp. to set up a nationwide broadband network.

The cases are part of efforts of Arroyo’s successor, President Benigno Aquino III, to root out high-level corruption that is endemic in the Philippines. Aquino blames Arroyo, who stepped down last year, of presiding over a decade of corrupt practices that eroded public trust in government and held back foreign investors.

She has accused him of using “black propaganda” to damage her image.

Arroyo’s husband and a former elections chief have denied accusations in a Senate hearing of receiving millions of dollars in kickbacks for Arroyo’s approval of the broadband deal. But the issue was

never properly investigated because Arroyo had barred top officials from disclosing details.

Anti-graft prosecutors filed a case against Arroyo, husband Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, former Elections Commissioner Benjamin Abalos and ex-Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza over the botched contract.

Court spokesman Renato Bocar said Arroyo was charged “for being interested for personal gain in the approval of the ... project despite knowledge of the irregularities and anomalies that attended its approval.”

The complaint is based on Senate testimonies in 2008 of ZTE consultant Dante Madriaga, who said that the deal was originally priced at $130 million, but that the cost ballooned to accommodate the kickbacks.

Former Economic Planning Secretary Romulo Neri had testified that Abalos offered him a bribe to approve the contract, and another witness, Jose de Venecia III, said the ex-president’s husband was promised a $70 million commission.

After being blocked at the Manila airport from seeking medical treatment abroad, Arroyo, 64, was arrested last month for allegedly ordering the rigging of 2007 congressional elections. She was moved to a military-

run veterans’ hospital, where she remains in detention. Abalos was arrested Dec. 13.

Aquino said in an interview with ABS-CBN television aired this week that he would consider pardoning Arroyo if she were convicted only if she showed remorse.

Aquino was elected in a landslide on a promise to stamp out corruption. Sixteen months later, he still enjoys high ratings, with a recent poll finding that seven out of 10 Filipinos approve of his policies.

The poll, conducted Dec. 3-7 by independent Social Weather Stations, also found that 69 percent of 1,200 respondents believe the government was treating Arroyo fairly. The poll had a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

Change your tyres when you feel they are underperforming. Eg. When your car, which usually handles well in poor weather conditions, suddenly doesn’t, and when it takes longer to stop when you brake.

Most tyre manufacturers mould tread wear indicators, right into the tyres tread pattern, usually at 1.6 millimeters. When the tyre reaches this limit it must be replaced.

Check to see if your tyres are properly inflated. You will need a tyre pressure gauge to check the tyre’s pressure.

Before you begin changing tyres, check to see that your car’s jack is

there, you have a properly inflated spare tyre, you have a lug wrench that properly fits your wheel, and you also have the correct lug bolts. Bring them to where you will be changing tyres.

Safely park your car, place a couple of concrete blocks beneath the tyres to ensure that it doesn’t roll or move. Remove the hubcap/plate (if they have them) and loosen the nuts prior to jacking up the car to prevent the wheels

spinning on you. Turn them counterclockwise to loosen until it comes off. Then jack up the car.

Remove the old tyre. Since you have already taken out the lug nuts, pull it with your weight

forward in order to prevent you from falling

backward. Adjust the tyre in the threaded shafts so they fit.

Then replace the lug nuts, tightening them in the proper order. Lower the jack so the tyre rests on the ground. Then replace the hubcap or plate.

What child doesn’t grow up with Dr. Seuss books? We have quite a few of them lying around the house. The kids love the silly characters and the rhymes. The Dr. Seuss inspired recipes that I’m about to share with you have been a great hit in my house. Of course the famous green eggs and ham are included, but there are also quite a few other snack and meal ideas. Create a fun Dr. Seuss inspired afternoon with some of these recipes and of course don’t forget to read a few of the books with your kids. (If you don’t own any, enjoy a trip to your local library.)

Green Eggs and HamThis has to be the most famous Dr.

Seuss inspired dish. Scramble a few eggs, add a couple of drops of blue food coloring to the mixture and cook as usual. You can serve a warmed up slice of ham with it, and if you want to

go all out, brush the ham with a little green food coloring.

My kids love either biscuits, or mashed potatoes with this dish. Add a little food coloring (either green, or a complimentary color like red) to the biscuit dough or the finished mashed potatoes for even more fun.

Cat in The Hat SnackMake the Cat’s Hat for a fun snack.

All you need is a few Ritz crackers, gummy lifesavers (preferably in white/clear and red) and a little vanilla frosting. Put the Ritz cracker on a plate. Use a little bit of vanilla frosting to glue the first lifesaver on the cracker. ‘Glue’ more lifesavers on top of the first one alternating between red and white.

These snacks are so cute; you may want to take a picture of your child’s creation before it is devoured.

Wiggly FishThis snack was inspired by ‘One

Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish’. Prepare several different colors of ‘Jello’ according to package directions and pour each flavor into a shallow pan. Use a fish shaped cookie cutter to cut the ‘Jello’ into fish shapes. (If you don’t have a fish shaped cookie cutter you could also just cut fish shapes with a knife.) You can also add small pieces of fruit to the Jello mixture before it cools. This is a great way to sneak an extra serving of fruit into your child’s diet.

Pink Ink for The YinThe Yink in ‘One Fish, Two Fish’

love to drink pink ink. Make your own version by combining a few strawberries (either fresh, or frozen and thawed) and some milk in a blender. Add a few drops of red food coloring if the ‘ink’ isn’t pink enough.

A Fruity Hat For The CatHow about this for a fun Sunday

breakfast? Whip up a batch of silver dollar pancakes and cut up some fresh strawberries. Grab some whipped cream and let the kids assemble the Cat’s hat by stacking pancakes, and strawberries on top of each other using the whipped cream as ‘glue’.

Enjoy a few of these Dr. Seuss inspired snacks and meals with your family, or invite a few neighbor kids over for a Dr. Seuss party. Either way they are a lot of fun and a great way to bring some of the Seuss stories to life.

Do you really want to stop smoking? Do you really want to keep your New Year’s resolution to stop lighting that weed and ‘have a puff?’ About half of my work colleagues here at iNews Cayman smoke. Most say they would like to stop but ‘can’t.’ “I’ll try in the New Year,” is the common excuse.

So, here we are again. Another New Year. Another resolution. Do they want to succeed? Is their desire to stop smoking genuine? Is it yours?

You may dream of winning the lottery and yes, you could win! But it’s down to chance and you have a better chance of flying to the moon, than of winning the lottery. You have a 50/50 chance of giving up smoking. Making a real change to your life? Well that’s a dream you can, make happen! And you can start right here, right now and your chances of succeeding can turn the odds in your favour if you continue reading.

Of course you’re not looking forward to it! What do you expect? As you begin to experience a steady build-up of tension, leading up to the big day when you’re finally going to start putting that cigarette out for good!

In the meantime of course, you now have the perfect excuse to behave badly, because it doesn’t really matter if you let yourself go over Christmas does it? You can do everything to excess. It won’t really matter! After all, you deserve to have one last cigarette. If you believe that, then you’re delusionary. You’re just fooling yourself because it makes you feel better at the moment. It’s the high, before the deep low that will inevitably follow and damage your self-esteem, sabotaging your chance of success even before you start.

Wake up and smell the coffee!! Do you really want to stop

smoking? Then do something about it, NOW! Clear the house of all the things that you know will prevent you, NOW! Do not put aside an emergency packet ‘just in case’, that’s

just planning for failure! No ‘last one for old times sake.’ Do it NOW as you read this article. Don’t put it off until tomorrow, because tomorrow never comes!

How we think and feel about ourselves is often the difference between happiness and success, or frustration and failure, therefore success and real lasting changes, only comes from changing the way we think. We are all products of our own thinking.

So, every thought we think has an impact on us. We respond to our negative thoughts and to our positive thoughts. If you have a history of failing to live up to your own expectations, your memories are loaded with negative programming.

No matter how much conscious effort you put into changing your habits, your subconscious mind is flooding your body with negative messages that have been ingrained for years.

You can however, change the way you think about stopping smoking using the help of hypnotherapy DVD’s. Many people trying to give up smoking, struggle to maintain willpower. They feel that they need help and are often too embarrassed to admit to anyone that they have a problem. Now, many sufferers of low motivation and low confidence and self-esteem, are benefiting from hypnotherapy treatment, which can literally change peoples lives for the better.

Your life will improve if you begin to believe in yourself and your

abilities. You will feel respected, giving you that extra boost to increase motivation, and your enthusiasm will increase noticeably. Some people say it feels like magic because it is so easy to make powerful changes. Hypnotherapy simply allows you to access the resources you already have in your subconscious mind.

Desire to make changes is good. Taking action to start something is even better. Let’s assume that you’ve decided right now, to start making the changes that you want. If you have tried before and failed, you need a support structure put into place as quickly as possible, to help you to maintain your resolve and to keep your thought processes focused on your goals. A hypnotherapy DVD programme for home use can help. You certainly don’t want to be obsessing about smoking all the time.

You can succeed and you can quit smoking for good. You will have success this time if you make sure that you put an effective support system into place as soon as possible. What’s stopping you from stopping?

You don’t even have to wait until New Year and make your resolutions at midnight on the 31st of December. Decide to start making the changes that you want to make in your life, RIGHT NOW!

LIENZ, Austria (AP) — Marlies Schild of Austria won her fourth straight World Cup slalom race, while 16-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States finished third to become the youngest female racer on a World Cup slalom podium in 33 years.

Schild (pictured) had two flawless runs to finish in a combined 1 minute, 51.42 seconds and beat Tina Maze of Slovenia by 0.79 seconds.

Shiffrin started her eighth World Cup event as No. 40, ended the opening run in 12th position before posting the fastest time in the final run. She finished 1.30 behind Schild, who lost 0.24 to Shiffrin in the final run.

Shiffrin, who became the youngest American national slalom champion last spring, impressed with an all-attacking and error-free second run that included turns extremely close to the gates.

“I have been working so hard for this moment,” said Shiffrin, who finished

eighth in slalom last month in Aspen, Colo. “Schild, Zettel, Hosp, Vonn; I have been watching all these top girls for the past 10 years. And now I am here myself, it really feels crazy.”

While Shiffrin stepped onto the podium for the first time, the 30-year-old Schild equaled Vreni Schneider’s record with her 47th World Cup slalom podium.

Shiffrin said she was impressed by meeting Schild, one of her idols.

“It’s the first time I’ve been talking to Marlies in person,” Shiffrin said. “I couldn’t believe she was congratulating

me after the race. What a moment!”

Schild was just as excited by the teenager’s performance.

“Of course I saw her in Aspen, she’s a real talent,” Schild said. “I see a lot of myself in the way she is skiing. She has all what it takes to become a great champion in the near future.”

U.S. teammate Lindsey Vonn was 18th and retained the lead in the overall standings. The three-time champion has 612 points, followed by Schild with 440 and

Austria’s Anna Fenninger, who usually skips slalom, with 368.

Defending overall champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany had costly mistakes in the steep final part of both her runs and finished ninth, 1.99 behind Schild. In the overall standings, Hoefl-Riesch is fifth with 326 points.

After a solid first run, Vonn lost speed and time going into the final section of her second run, finishing 3.01 off the lead.

Vonn hasn’t been on a slalom podium for more than two years.

Steve Kean says he has been boosted by messages of support from fellow Premier League managers.

Kean, whose Blackburn side are five points from safety, revealed he had had a “good chat” with Sir Alex Ferguson.

“What was said I would rather keep private but it was very encouraging,” said Kean.

“For him to take the time out to phone me and give me a message of support shows the stature of the man. I was really impressed.”

Kean, who said he had also received supportive messages from the likes of Harry Redknapp, David Moyes and Alan Pardew, acknowledged Ferguson would not be so charitable when Blackburn travelled to second-placed Manchester United on Saturday.

“It’s going to be a tough game,” said Kean, whose team were buoyed by a 1-1 draw at Liverpool last time out. “They are scoring goals and not conceding too many, so we know it’s going to be

a tough task.“But we have got to take confidence

from what we’ve done in our last game at Anfield. We’re going to have to at least give what we gave at Anfield - and more.”

Kean is having to cope with a long injury list and admitted there was “a need to strengthen” his squad in the January transfer window.

“Anybody can look at the squad list and see how many defenders we have got injured,” he said. “We certainly need to get some bodies in.”

Despite Rovers posting an annual loss of £18.3m this week, increasing the club’s overall debt to £26.3m, Kean said there will be talks with the club’s owners, the Venky’s, over a potential budget for January.

“I am very optimistic we will get funds,” said the Scot. “The financial side of the club is dealt with by the financial directors and the people that crunch the numbers.

“Hopefully they can come back in the next few days and say that we can

be active at a good level.”Kean acknowledged that the club’s

very open approach in past transfer dealings may have been wrong.

“I wouldn’t like to mention any names because we’ve done that before in previous windows,” he said.

“Then it doesn’t happen and it ends up just putting pressure on ourselves, so we’d rather do our business quietly and under the radar.

“We were never leading the fans along but, in hindsight, maybe now we will just not mention anybody and when fans see somebody arriving then they will be happy with that.”

Kean boosted by Fergie support

Nadal plans to rest shoulder injury in FebruaryABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Rafael Nadal plans to take several weeks off after the Australian Open to recover from a nagging shoulder injury.

The second-ranked Nadal said Thursday the injury surfaced before the ATP World Tour Finals in November and that he was still “not 100 percent.” He only decided three days ago to defend his title at the World Tennis Championships, a two-day exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi.

“I had a problem before London with my shoulder and I had to stop for about 10 days before the (ATP) finals,” Nadal said Thursday in Abu Dhabi. “It felt better but again it resurfaced. In December, I did not have enough time to practice because of that.”

Nadal will play the winner of a match between Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and David Ferrer in the semifinals on Friday.

He is hopeful his shoulder will hold up in Abu Dhabi where he will attempt to win the tournament for

the third year in a row and in Doha, where he plans to play at the Qatar Open next week. After competing at the Australian Open beginning Jan. 16, the 25-year-old Spaniard said he would take February off to rest and practice.

While praising the dominance of No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic, who won three Grand Slams, Nadal blamed himself for allowing his play to become “too predictable” at times. But he insisted he wasn’t going to overhaul his game despite losing to Djokovic in

six finals.Nadal won the French Open,

rallied Spain to victory in the Davis Cup final and finished 69-15 this season. He lost to Djokovic in the finals of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

“This is not the time to change many things. This is the time to keep playing well, to keep improving my tennis,” Nadal said. “I will just try and be competitive in all the tournaments. I was competitive in all the tournaments and was in three Grand Slam finals.”

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Linebacker Jason Taylor walked across the locker room brushing his teeth, then ducked into the equipment room to rinse and spit. Minutes later he tried to muster a smile for a cluster of TV cameras.

It was time to call it quits. The NFL’s active sacks leader

said he’ll retire after this season, his 15th in the NFL and his 13th with the Miami Dolphins. Taylor has contemplated retirement in years past only to be lured back, but now he insists his mind’s made up.

“Sunday’s my last game,” he said. “I might even change my cell phone number so they can’t reach me.”

The 37-year-old Taylor, who made the announcement following practice Wednesday, ranks sixth all-time with 139½ sacks. He has six fumble returns for touchdowns, an NFL record.

He’ll conclude his career Sunday against the New York Jets. It’ll be his 204th game with the Dolphins, which ranks second to Dan Marino’s 242. “His contributions on the field as one of the greatest players in team history will be remembered by Dolphins fans for years to come,” owner Stephen Ross said in a statement. “He will always remain an integral part of the Dolphin family.”

Taylor has had three stints with the Dolphins, who drafted him in the third round in 1997. He also played for the Redskins in 2008 and the Jets in 2010.

“In my opinion, that’s a no-

brainer Hall of Fame player,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “He was a phenomenal teammate here. We only had him the one year, yet he affected the team so positively. I’m proud that I had a chance to coach him.”

Taylor helped the Jets reached the AFC championship game. He never made it to the Super Bowl, and his final playoff game with the Dolphins was way back in 2001.

“If there was one regret I have as an athlete, it’s that I didn’t get a chance to bring a championship to Miami,” he said.

Taylor said his wife was surprised he’s hanging it up. But the Dolphins (5-10) are nearing the end of another disappointing season and about to embark on a coaching search, which influenced his decision.

“The last few weeks I thought about it more,” he said. “It has been a tough year. This organization is going to make some changes. This is the right time for me to go and allow this organization to grow and improve.”

Taylor made the Pro Bowl six times, spending much of his career at end before switching to linebacker. He has been used mostly in passing situations this season and has seven sacks this season, which ranks second on the team.

“He’s a great leader, a great ambassador for the city of Miami, and a great player in this league,” teammate Jake Long said. “He’ll definitely be missed.”

His best season was in 2006,

when he was chosen NFL Defensive Player of the Year. That season he had 13½ sacks, forced 10 fumbles and returned two interceptions for scores.

Taylor has scored nine touchdowns, the most by any player whose primary position was the defensive line and who entered the league after 1970. He has four safeties, which ties him for fourth in NFL history. Taylor holds a Dolphins record with 27 fumble recoveries.

He has been honored many times for his work in the community, and his South Florida foundation has contributed more than $2 million in grants and services to help children.

“He’s a tremendous role model,” teammate Kendall Langford said. “He is always giving, giving, giving.”

The foundation will help keep Taylor busy in retirement. He has also dabbled in acting, and earned runner-up honors on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” in 2008.

“I look forward to the future. There are a few irons in the fire,” Taylor said. “Nothing is going to replace professional football. You can’t find it on the golf course or anywhere. There’s no place like an NFL locker room. Those guys become your family for seven months of the year. You won’t replace that. But I’ll find something else.”

Six-time Pro Bowler Taylor to retire after season

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins left tackle Jake Long went on injured reserve Wednesday with a torn right biceps, meaning he’ll miss the team’s final game Sunday against the New York Jets.

The move came one day after Long was chosen as a Pro Bowl starter for the third consecutive year. He endured an injury-filled

season, including a back ailment that forced him to miss two games after he started the first 61 games of his career.

Long suffered the arm injury in the first quarter of Saturday’s loss at New England.

“It’s definitely disappointing — not the way I wanted to end the season,” he said. “I’m going to get healthy and come into next year the

healthiest I’ve been in the NFL.”Three other players missed

practice Wednesday due to injuries — running back Reggie Bush (knee), tackle Marc Colombo (ankle) and cornerback Jimmy Wilson (hamstring). Receiver Brandon Marshall (knee) was limited. The Dolphins didn’t specify whether the injuries were on the right or left side.

Tight end Anthony Fasano returned to practice after missing last week’s game because of a concussion.

To fill Long’s spot on the roster, the Dolphins signed running back Richard Medlin from the practice squad. He signed with New England as a rookie free agent in August and was released at the end of training camp.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish insists striker Andy Carroll is not struggling for confidence.

The club’s record signing has scored three goals in 19 appearances this season and only five in 28 since his £35m move to Anfield.

“I don’t think self-belief is a problem for Andy Carroll, I don’t see why it should be,” Dalglish said.

Carroll, 22, could make his second consecutive start for Liverpool against his old club Newcastle today.

He made his first start in four matches in Boxing Day’s 1-1 draw with Blackburn and could have scored had it not been for two good saves by Rovers goalkeeper Mark Bunn.

Dalglish said: “There is nothing to say he is short of belief and there is no evidence he should be.

“One game he played in we went down to nine men [the 4-0 defeat by Tottenham] and another [the loss at Fulham] we had another sent off.

“I think yourselves [the media] have a bigger problem with Andy than anyone else.

“This week is understandable because it is against Newcastle but I don’t understand the rest of the stuff.”

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, who reluctantly sold Carroll, has backed him to regain his form and add to his three England caps.

“He hasn’t really had a run in that Liverpool side and like all strikers, he probably needs a run,” Pardew said.

“He’s a great lad and a great player. I like Andy.

“It was disappointing to see him left out of the England squad the last time because I think he can be an England player and England’s number nine.

“He is going through a period of transition at a new club, finding his feet and finding out that they play slightly differently to how we did here, but he will find his way.
