Juror Statement

Thank you to the Richmond Art Museum for the honor and the privilege of inviting me to judge this year’s annual exhibition. As the chair of the annual Indiana Heritage Arts exhibition, I understand the value and importance that the judge brings to the task.

I did my best to evaluate objectively each work entered. I looked for technical accomplishment, but also I looked for a “voice.” That is, I believe a work should communicate to the viewer what the artist’s goals, ideas, and intents were in each piece. All of the technical skill in the world can’t supersede what for me makes art powerful: the communication of each artist’s unique humanity.

To that end, the artworks to which I awarded prizes spoke powerfully to me in their own unique voice and had strong points of view. Whether a complex work with multiple figures or a “simple” scene of sunlight illuminating landscape, each awarded work spoke to me individually, uniquely, and powerfully in a memo-rable way. I was impressed and moved by so many works that were all strong in content, emotion, and technical accomplishment.

From the Director

2019-2020 Annual Report

As we look back at the 2019-2020 fiscal year, it will be one of the most memorable in our history. As we find ourselves navigating the ‘new norm’, RAM is continuing to fulfill our mission to serve children, adults, and artists through active creative programming. RAM and the community it serves has an enduring history of being arts-focused.

RAM started the year by offering two exceptional and ambitious exhibitions. The first exhibition featured one of Indiana’s most recognized landscape painters, Dan Woodson. With over 100 paintings represented in the exhibition, Into the Woods: Hoosier Landscapes by Dan Woodson, broke records with attendance and art sales. The second exhibition, Robert Indiana: The Richmond Connection, was based on a previously unknown personal relationship that Robert Indiana had with a local Richmond family that spanned decades, since his birth. The exhibition featured remarkable selections of his work from regional

museums as well as rare ephemera, letters and photographs that had been preserved by the family and never before been seen by the public.

RAM continued our rich commitment to regional and local artists through the Annual Exhibition by Richmond and Area Artists which featured 98 advanced artists and 35 amateur artists as well as works for sale by local artists at the Art for the Holidays event. In February, RAM presented a duo show, pairing the 3D sculptures of artist and IU East professor Carrie Longley with the paintings of Richmond artist Joseph T. Swanson.

It was in March that the spread of Covid-19 began to impact our programming and led to the closing of the museum for the remainder of the fiscal year. RAM was able to almost fully complete our Art is…Mexico, multi-cultural, hands-on program which typically serves nearly 2,000 students. With school closings in March, the annual All Wayne County High School Art Exhibition was canceled, but we were able to move forward with a virtual Phantoscope High School Film Festival.

When the pandemic ends- and it will- cities, like Richmond, that preserve their quality of life and cultural organizations, will rebuild their economies and civic pride. We wish to thank the nearly 6,500 RAM members, local businesses and regional foundations that help to engage, enlighten and enhance our community through art education, creation and observation.

Education and Visitor Experience The Richmond Art Museum has long held art education at the core of its mission. Educational programming, including Art Is…, the

Phantoscope High School Film Festival, and the All Wayne County High School Art Exhibition, enriches the lives of more than 7,000 students annually. Art nurtures our spirit and calms the mind, and engaging in either art appreciation or creation is now, and forever will be, something that is deeply connected to our humanity, but perhaps now more importantly than ever, helps us see the humanity in others. Here is to the path forward and the art that will inspire us into the future.

Lance Crow Education Director

Art Is…MexicoArt Is…Mexico was a great program, cut a few weeks

short by COVID! RAM showcased many artifacts, paintings, sculpture, food and more to the 1,500 students and adults who participate in the Art Is…program annually. Students engaged in hands-on art activities such as creating tissue paper flowers, creating Dia de los Muertos masks, and trying on futbol uniforms like Mexican national soccer players! Volunteers are of vital importance to Art Is…and we are grateful to those who give their time to support our students. Thank you to the Quigg Fund for endowing Art Is… as well as the continuing support from 3Rivers Federal Credit Union.

PhantoscopeLike so much else at RAM and beyond, the Phantoscope High School Film Festival was significantly affected

by the novel coronavirus and resulting stay-at-home order. The 13th Annual Phantoscope was entirely virtual this year, and kicked off with a Facebook Live event with scheduled guest speaker Alex Bohs. While at Buchanan High School in Lafayette, IN, Alex entered a film into the very first Phantoscope competition, and won the second one with his film, “First Love.” Alex is now living in LA and in the early stages of his film career. While we were looking forward to seeing Alex in person back in his home state, we understood the need to put public safety first and made the difficult decision to forgo an in-person screening. The year’s lineup of selected films (including Best Film winner “Diamond Game” by Nolan Hieu Trifunovic) can be viewed at phantoscope.org.

All Wayne County High School Art ExhibitionThe 14th Annual All Wayne County High School Art Exhibition was cancelled due to COVID. RAM looks

forward to this important show which showcases the talent of art students in our six Wayne County high schools.

Young Artist CampsFor three weeks every summer, RAM Young Artist Camps

unleash the creativity of local students, age 5 through 8th graders. Led by the effervescent, brilliant, Sontina Reid, campers explore a different theme each week and work with many different types of media. Thank you to Richmond Community Schools who graciously allows use of their classroom space, so RAM campers can take advantage of our current exhibitions for enjoyment and inspiration. RAM continues to lead the way in developing the next generation of talented artists in Wayne County and beyond!

PotterypaloozaIt was another record year for Potterypalooza! 2019

marked the 7th year for the popular ceramics-only juried art fair. We were back outside on the front lawn of the museum. An estimated 850 people were in attendance to visit 25 ceramic artists including 2 college ceramics programs selling their wares. The Kids Clay Zone and pottery wheel demonstration area were hugely popular and the live music set a great tone throughout the day. More than 30 volunteers helped us pull this event together!

RAM Ceramics instructor Brian Haviland did demonstrations of various Raku style firings, potters in attendance, including John Peterson, did wheel throwing demonstrations throughout the day. After seven years, our patrons look forward to Potterypalooza each year, and look forward to seeing their favorite potters. The popularity of the festival continues to increase, and RAM is committed to improving it each year!

The artists will be donating a percentage of their day’s sales to benefit the RAM ceramics program through the Philip Sartore Scholarship Fund. This fund helps people interested in ceramics, but otherwise unable to take classes, get their hands in the clay.

Secret Garden TourSecret Garden Tour continues to

be a hugely popular summer event that has raised over $300,000 for RAM in its history! The chance to experience the best local landscaping is irresistible, and participants always showcase their graciousness and hospitality to guests in addition to their gardens. The expanded Garden Boutique brings out early bird shoppers for garden decor, while plein air painters creating works in this year’s elegant Reeveston locations continue to bring in freshly painted beauty throughout the weekend. Money raised by Secret Garden Tour is used for the operating fund, which enables RAM to keep exhibitions free to the public, making this event a winning proposition for all!

En Fresh Air2019 marked the 1st year of a brand

new fundraiser for RAM, En Fresh Air. The event is an outdoor evening of food, beverages and art! The gracious hosts of the inaugural event, Kim and Jeremy Vincent, allowed RAM to set up on the beautiful grounds of Elkhorn Farms, and we thank them for their hospitality. Plein air painters were invited to paint all day leading up to the event, and then a show and sale of their completed works was held in the barn during the evening. In addition to the painters, Lisa Pelo, Indianapolis glass artist, brought her mobile glass studio, and guests were able to create their own glass creations that night! All proceeds from En Fresh Air go to support educational programming at RAM.

Palette to PalateIn 2020 we were able to host the 3rd Annual Palette to

Palate event, a collaboration between RAM and Indiana University East. The event is an art and dining experience which highlights local and regional artists and their work under a theme or locale that ties the atmosphere and cuisine together. This time it was Italy, and the Old Country did not disappoint! Artists displayed a variety of works in different mediums including ceramics, mosaic work, and paintings! The food was a delicious taste of Italian cuisine, and we even had gelato for dessert. We look forward to enriching this fundraiser, year after year, with our tremendous partner, IU East!
