The project brings together a team of researchers and practitioners from Nepal, the UK, Canada, and New Zealand, and from a range of disciplines including geoscience, social science, and the humanities, with the aim of reducing the impacts of earthquakes and landslides in the context of wider social, political and economic change. To learn more, follow @SajagNepal on Twitter, or email Katie Oven ( [email protected]) or Jeevan Baniya ( [email protected]). Nepal Heritage Documentation Project The Nepal Heritage Documentation Project (NHDP) is producing a comprehensive national inventory that helps to capture endangered and previously undocumented built heritage of Nepal with a focus on the Kathmandu Valley. NHDP started its work in Heidelberg and Patan in October 2018 as a cooperation between the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (University of Heidelberg), the Saraf Foundation for Himalayan Tradition and Culture, and the Department of Archaeology, Government of Nepal. Arcadia will fund NHDP for six more years to document more than 2000 monuments, 2500 inscriptions, 8000 objects, and the intangible cultural heritage associated with the monuments. The datasets collected by the project are publicly available in DANAM and HeidICON, both open-access databases. Impact of Federalisation on Nepal's Health System A Longitudinal Analysis This new three-year (2020-2023) project brings together an interdisciplinary team of scholars from Nepal (Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences; PHASE Nepal) and the UK (Bournemouth University; University of Huddersfield; University of Sheield). Funded by the UK’s Health Systems Research Initiative, the project investigates the ways in which Nepal's move to a federal government structure is impacting on the health system at all levels—from local service delivery up to federal government policymaking. For more information about the project or the team, see https://www.nepalfederalhealthsystem.com. Anthropology of Inscriptions Memory and Cultural Heritage in the Public Sphere This start-up research project at the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies, University of Heidelberg, aims at investigating the crucial role inscriptions, graiti or other publicly displayed media of written communication have played for the construction and transformation of public places, socio-religious identities, remembering and value in the Kathmandu Valley. A selected corpus of inscriptions from the fieenth century to the present will be documented, edited and published in digital form. Textual data will be enriched by metadata, content annotations and linked with related digitally available ethnographic material (videos, oral histories, maps), monument documentations or archival sources. The Principal Investigators in this project are Christiane Brosius and Astrid Zotter. For more information, contact Simon Cubelic, Research Associate, at [email protected]. PhD Award Nawaraj Upadhaya of Transcultural Psychosocial Organization (TPO) Nepal was awarded a PhD degree by the Utrecht University, the Netherlands, in September 2020. His dissertation, ‘ Strengthening Mental Health Systems in Fragile Settings’ uses the concepts of medical anthropology and WHO’s health systems strengthening building blocks framework to explore the challenges and opportunities for mental health system strengthening in a low-resource setting like Nepal. The dissertation combined qualitative data with survey data from Chitwan district, which was a demonstration site for the evaluation of a district-wide mental health care plan. The study findings show that active participation of service users and caregivers and promoting supportive socio-cultural systems are vital for mental health system eorts in Nepal.
