Jazz NEW RELEASE INFORMATION - RELEASE DATE 12/10/2009 Tord Gustavsen Ensemble Restored, Returned 1798987 602517989870 CD ECM JAZZ Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen has built a huge and enthusiastic worldwide following through his ECM discs and touring, and Restored, Returned – released exclusively in the UK on the eve of an extensive tour – will broaden that popularity still further. After a trilogy of trio recordings – Changing Places, The Ground, Being There - which explored a clearly-demarcated melodic terrain, here is a strikingly different album from Tord Gustavsen at the head of a reconfigured band. Into the group come two Norwegian improvisers familiar to ECM listeners, bassist Mats Eilertsen and saxophonist Tore Brunborg. Inside the ensemble new aspects of interactive possibility open up as duo, trio and quartet instrumental combinations explore the space inside Tord’s compositions - his gospel-inflected hymns and lullabies and ballads and his pulsing, almost minimalistic grooves. Six tracks include also the voice of Kristin Asbjørnsen. She wraps her bluesy phrasing huskily around the poetry of WH Auden on “Lay Your Sleeping Head, My Love”, “Restored, Returned”, “Wrapped in a Yielding Air” and “O Stand, Stand At The Window”, and vocalizes wordlessly on three takes of Gustavsen’s “Left Over Lullaby”, threaded through the album as a structural element. Tord’s 2004 The Ground reached No 1 in the Norwegian pop charts, an unprecedented achievement for an instrumental album (“This album will make your life better”, promised The Independent on Sunday). Being There was Album of the Year in Jazz Review – indeed each of his previous recordings has topped jazz charts around the world. Personnel: Kristin Asbjørnsen: vocals; Tore Brunborg: tenor and soprano saxophones; Tord Gustavsen: piano; Mats Eilertsen: double-bass; Jarle Vespestad: drums Tour dates: Queen's Hall, Edinburgh (October 16), CBSO Centre. Country NEW RELEASE INFORMATION - RELEASE DATE 12/10/2009

Roger Knott Step Out Into The Sun LEGCD108 5060148501086 CD LEG ROOM RECORDS COUNTRY Brilliant collection of catchy melodies and warm ballads from English singer-songwriter Roger Knott. Recorded in Nashville with the prestigious talents of Nanci Griffith’s sidemen. The third album by the British singer-songwriter steps forward with a varied collection of catchy melodies and warm longing ballads. Textured with a deft blend of acoustic and electric guitars with supporting keyboards and vocals, Knott moves easily from the country swing of "I Can't Find Anybody" and the exquisite ballad "The Sound of Your Name" to the homesick melancholy of "Seeing Ireland Again" and the mid-tempo country-rock of "Late Bloom." Recorded by Knott in Nashville under the direction of producer Clive Gregson, “Step Out Into the Sun” also marks the continuation of the artist's recent track work with Nashville-based German musician Thomm Jutz (Mary Gauthier, Nanci Griffith). The album's team of players also includes Pat McInerney (Nanci Griffith, Don Williams) on drums and percussion; singer-songwriter Le Ann Etheridge on bass guitar and backing vocals; plus contributions from ex-Whiskeytown steel player Mike Daly and saxist/flautist Jim Hoke. The songs resulted from a period of personal upheaval and find Knott mixing life's hard facts with messages of prevailing hopefulness. Some are touched by a pervasive air of melancholy. Stepping off that path, the almost hymn-like "Here‘s To A Free World" is Roger's response to world leaders’ use of the word ‘freedom‘. Tracks; Call Me Back / I Can’t Find Anybody / High On Leaving / Late Bloom / The Sound Of Your Name / Seeing Ireland again / The Devil Riding By / Only The Heart Can Sing / Surprise (Open Your Eyes) / Good Times Have None To Spare / I Thought You’d Always Be There / Here’s To A Free World / Laugh At The Rain / Free World (Reprise)

Roger Knott Benn Down That Road LEGCD109 5060148501093 CD LEG ROOM RECORDS COUNTRY Nashville recorded genre defying collection of songs with fiddle, accordion, mandolin and dobro providing delightful support. An acutely perceived observational journey through life and love. On his fourth album, Knott once again brings a new vista to his expanding horizon. There’s a familiar, cosy feeling to the tunes, informed but not entrapped by Country and Folk music, swaying back and forth over the borders of genres, and sung in his very individual voice. The album is delightfully ornamented by a seasoned Nashville section including upright bass, fiddle, accordion, mandolin, dobro and guitars. The pulse of it, though, is the percussion wizardry of Pat McInerney, a long-time friend of Roger’s from England who gave Roger his original invitation to come to Nashville. Working once again with guitarist Thomm Jutz, who also acts here as Producer, the artist finds his work in full flower on such memorable songs as the optimistic “When Love Comes Around Again,” the nostalgic “Sudden Rain,” the humorous "Crazy Rules" and the politically charged “Only On Loan.” The title track has a spiritual element to it, while warning against the false prophets of drugs and charlatans. By contrast, another song, ‘Rolling Oceans,’ offers a non-partisan view on the eternal subject of war. These twelve songs assembled here represent an acutely perceived observational journey through slices of life, including the roller coaster of love. Tracks; Been Down That Road / Crazy Rules / Sudden Rain / Bring Me Back A Souvenir / When Love Comes Around Again / Moment In The Sun / Uncle Charlie’s Baton / From The Streets / Only On Loan / Autograph / Go Back To Dream / Rolling Oceans

The Queensberry Rules Take Your Own Road FECD227 5017116022722 CD FELLSIDE FOLK Heritage, history and topical songs from the band which displays literate songs, hook-laden tunes and spot-on harmonies. After quietly building a reputation through their own self-released albums The Queensberry Rules have consolidated it with two recent albums for Fellside. Each time they’ve gone one better and have done so again. All the trademarks are here: literate songs, hook-laden tunes and spot-on harmonies. They pursue their ‘heritage and history’ approach with songs about their home territory of the potteries as well as self-penned ones about historical characters. These themes sit alongside songs of a changing world and topical ones about the credit crunches and foreign wars. The comparisons with Lindisfarne, The Strawbs and The Waterboys with hints of Jez Lowe, Billy Bragg and Ewan MacColl abound. fRoots described them as having “seemingly plugged into a whole new energy bank; strong direct and urgent as well as socialist and sincere” . “..destined for great things” BBC Radio 2 Tracks; Top Dog / Dark Peak Moor / Away, Away / When You Come Home Again / The Milehouse, Breakfast At Tebay / No Pardon / Canal Song / Sauntering Ned / When The Last One Is Gone / Your Own Roads / Plant A Tree

Louis Killen Ballads And Broadsides TSCD126 714822012621 CD TOPIC FOLK The outstanding singer of the folk revival of the mid 1960s, Ballads and Broadsides was the first LP released by a solo revival folk singer. A dynamic singer of great individuality and integrity, Louis Killen is one of the most widely influential musicians of the folk revival and a key voice of English traditional song. He is a hard-core, unadulterated folksinger whose passionate delivery is matched by a deep and wide-ranging knowledge of the songs and the working people who made them. Born in Gateshead in Co. Durham, he was noted for his love of sea songs, as well as the industrial and rural folk songs of his native North East of England. Released in 1965, Ballads and Broadsides was the first full album by a solo folk singer and was, and still is, hugely influential. A great album full of great performances it was, sadly, to be the only album he recorded for Topic Records as he left Britain within a couple of years for a new life in the USA. His legacy is finally given the recognition it deserves with this remastered re-release of this classic album. Topic Records are proud to reissue this classic recording from their archive as part of the label’s 70th anniversary celebrations Tracks; Young Edwin in the Lowlands / As We Were a-Sailing / The Flying Cloud / All Things are Quite Silent / One May Morning / The Cock / The Bramble Briar / Thorneymoor Woods / The Banks of Sweet Primeroses

Jackie Daly Music From Sliabh Luachra TSCD358 714822035828 C D TOPIC FO LK For over four decades, Jackie Daly has been acknowledged as, in the words of the New York Times, “probably the best accordionist in Ireland. Released in 1977, Jackie Daly’s remarkable debut album has long been recognised as an important landmark recording, capturing a musician at the peak of his powers and helping to re-establish the accordion as an important instrument in Irish music. From this impressive beginning, Jackie went on to play with the cream of Ireland’s musicians in such seminal groups as De Danann and Patrick Street and buil d a reputation as “the” Irish button accordion player – in other words the best in the world. His infectious and rhythmic playing has delighted audiences around the world. As Earle Hitchner put it..."Fact is, any place Jackie Daly takes out the box to play is a great place for traditional music." Fiery or ethereal, 100 miles per hour or moving to the cadence of the centuries, there is no one better on button accordion than Jackie Daly. Alistair Anderson Steel Skies TSCD427 714822042727 CD TOPIC FO LK Alistair Anderson’s Steel Skies is a suite for traditional instruments led by concertina and Northumbrian Pipes and is considered to be his best album. “This is new music but with its roots deep in the traditional music of the British Isles. The tradit ional musician takes old tunes and polishes them like gemstones, revealing new facets of the melodies at every turn. The vitality such musicians bring to their music has always been an inspiration to me, and Steel Skies is a personal response to this.” - Alistair Anderson. Scored for a group of musicians including fiddles, flutes, mandolins and Alistair Anderson’s concertina and Northum brian Smallpipes, the compositions here take from the tradition but expand on it creating a complete whole. This wonderful album has a justly sterling reputation among those who have heard it, calling out for a re-release on CD. Alistair Anderson’s mastery of the concertina is legendary, but it is the concept and the beauty of the music here that takes your breath away. Topic Records are proud to reissue this classic recording from their archive as part of the label’s 70th anniversary celebrations. Ewan MacColl Ballads TSCD576D 714822057622 CD2 TOPIC FO LK The great traditional ballads are storytelling at its dark, urgent best and the greatest exponent of this folk art was Ewan MacColl. Traditional narrative ballads are at the centre of the British Folk Tradition. They told stories which helped define the English and Scottish national characters; stories about murder and intrigue, love and discord on both the epic and domestic scale, but stories that told us about ourselves. Ewan MacColl was the folk revival’s greatest proponent of the ballad; ballads were central to his conception of the folk revival and at the core of his recordings and performances. His commitment showed in his performances, where the story was everything. No one who ever witnessed him performing one of the great ballads live will ever forget it. BALLADS: Murder, Intrigue, Love, Discord is a great selection of performances originally released in 1956 and never before on CD. This beautiful double CD is lovingly remastered and packaged in a slipcase with a 64 page booklet with extensive notes and full texts of all the songs. Scan Tester I Never Played To Many Posh Dances TSCD581D 714822058124 C D2 TOPIC FO LK Scan Tester, 1887 – 1972, was the best known anglo concertina player around the folk scene in the 1960s and early 70s, playing in a traditional style that might have been lost if not for him. Lewis “Scan” Tester was born in Sussex in 1887 to a musical family. He was something of a prodigy playing from the age of 8 at all sorts of social functions where music was required, includi ng pubs. While his greatest prowess was on the anglo-German concertina, he was first rate step-dancer, a fine singer and also played fiddle, melodeon and tambourine. He was famous in his local area and played almost every weekend at The Stone Quarry Pub for over 40 years. In the mid 1950s Reg Hall met him and invited him to play in his loose-knit band of musicians. Their playing schedule covered the usual pub gigs, private parties and also included a trip to London where Scan played before a full house at the Royal Festival Hall. Game to go anywhere, Scan accepted invitations to clubs and festivals around the country and thus became known and loved by a public beyond his own place and time. Mostly recorded by Reg Hall, these 55 tracks – expanded and remastered from the 1990 vinyl LP – open a window to our musical past. A labour of love, this double CD is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest traditional musicians this country has produced. Topic Records are proud to reissue these important recordings from their archive as part of the label’s 70th anniversary celebrations.

JCCD112 5060110362189 CD JAZZ CAT JAZZ

Second release from this highly accomplished chamber jazz trio that features Steve Lodder (piano, keyboards), Ben Crosland (bass) and Steve Waterman (trumpet, flugelhorn). ‘This excellent band is as warm and inviting as any jazz lover could wish’ - The Observer

Threeway brings together two of the UK’s leading players with one of the North of England’s most experienced composer/bandleaders. The trio approaches improvisation in a subtle manner; the interplay between the players creates a natural intensity combined with an acute sensitiv ity to dynamics. Songs of the Year - the follow-up to the group’s 2005 debut album, Conversations - features 12 original compositions written by Ben, and is a celebration of the English calendar and climate. Personnel: Steve Lodder (piano, keyboards), Ben Crosland (bass), Steve Waterman (trumpet, flugelhorn) (4 stars) ‘The music works brilliantly…three stellar musicians. Wayne Krantz Krantz Carlock Lefebvre ABLX018 827912087390 CD ABSTRACT LOGIX JAZZ

Cult guitarist Wayne Krantz returns to the recording studio for the first time in fifteen years. This new CD with sometime Steely Dan drummer Keith Carlock and bassist Tim Lefebvre documents a boldly creative music often entirely of the moment.

‘Krantz Carlock Lefebvre’ features Krantz as one-third of a trio that was first convened in 1997 and which has primarily focused on live work , documented on a series of recordings sold directly by the guitarist. “Giv ing this band a voice in the context of a studio is a big deal for us,” Krantz says. “Everything we’ve ever released together has been some kind of live album. Having recorded ten albums over the years in group, big band and orchestral format, this intimate collection of ballads sees Shaw in the studio, alone at the piano. From the poignant title track, composed by Shaw, to Nick Cave’s “Into My Arms”, through Eubie Blake, Noel Coward and Michael Legrand and two new Fran Landesman lyrics, this new recording echoes the great jazz vocalists like Mark Murphy , Carmen McRae and Nat Cole as well as the more contemporary singer pianists such as Billy Joel and Randy Newman. The album was recorded and produced by Neal Richardson, producer of Liane Carroll’s last 5 releases. The packaging for the album is manufactured according to Splash Point Records’ green policy, being of recycled board with no plastic. A donation from the proceeds goes to Friends of the Earth. "Best Jazz Vocalist" at the BBC Jazz Awards in 2007 and 2004, Ian Shaw has already amassed a number of highly acclaimed albums and is a popular performer both in the UK and the US. An incredibly colourful character, he has been cited, along with Mark Murphy and Kurt Elling, as one of the world's finest male jazz vocalists. Zeep People & Things

CRAM148 876623006053 CD CRAMMED WORLD/ROCK

For the follow-up to their summery debut recording London-based musicians Nina Miranda and Chris Franck have crafted a fresh, immediate pop album that dips its elegant toes into every musical pool they have previously explored as Smoke City and Da Lata, as well as embarking into exciting new waters.

The soaring confidence of a band on peak form is perhaps at its most evident on a daring Brazilian folk reworking of the Specials' classic "Ghost Town". With words rewritten in Portuguese they reapply the original anger and ominous feel to inner city tensions in modern-day Rio. Zeep's "Ghost Town" has already been given the greatest endorsement possible: the enthusiastic backing of The Specials' Jerry Dammers.

Nina Miranda and Chris Franck were founding members of Smoke City and Da Lata. They had a huge international hit with Underwater Love (famously used as a soundtrack to a Levi's advert). They have collaborated with world-renowned artists such as Tony Allen, Baaba Maal, Ernest Ranglin, Sly and Robbie, Vieux Farka Touré, Nitin Sawhney, Jah Wobble, Femi Kuti, Bebel Gilberto and more. Press quotes about their 2007 Far Out album: “A signature album of 2007.” (The Times) “The pair's instinct for a lovely melody and Nina's vocals deliver swooning moments. Beautifully played.” (The Observer)

“Notable for the quality of the musicianship and the impressively infectious songs.” (The Guardian)

Tar ika Bibiango

XENO4067 048248406727 CD XENOPHILE One of the most groundbreaking bands on the world music scene, Tarika’s re-issue of 1994's Bibiango approaches the folk music traditions of their native Madagascar with an eye towards the future. Tarika - a groundbreaking group on every level: a world music ensemble fronted by women (sisters Hanitra and Noro); a folk group with the drive and intensity of a rock band; and a Malagasy group that cross blends regional music styles, instruments and rhythms. Tarika has, in many ways, become synononymous with the music of Madagascar. Throughout their career, Tarika has received international acclaim and topped World Music Charts in the USA, Japan and Europe with their hypnotic mix of roots and contemporary styles. With Bibiango, Tarika has expanded the line-up of five members and taken all the chemistry and excitement of the previous albums to new heights. Infectious melodies, buoyant grooves, tight harmonies, exotic instrumentation and an aural attack that has been described as "virtuoso traditional music with the energy of punk rock." Tracks; Ankoay / Safidy / Taraina / Bibiango / Haintany / Kilalao / Fomba / Ragoaika / Demony / Jejy / Didy / Zanane / Salama ‘Iereo
