April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

Bowel cancer is the UK's second biggest cancer killer but it shouldn't be.

It is in fact very treatable, particularly when diagnosed early.

The big problem is that awareness is too low.

Symptoms of bowel cancer

The symptoms of bowel (colorectal) cancer can be:

• Bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your poo

• A change in bowel habit lasting for 3 weeks or more especially to looser or runny poo

• Unexplained weight loss

• Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason

• A pain or lump in your tummy

You might experience one, some, all of the above or no symptoms at all. Remember most symptoms

will not be bowel cancer.

If you are worried about any symptoms that you think might be caused by bowel cancer, make an

appointment with your doctor or call the Bowel Cancer UK Information and Support Service on 0800

840 35 40 or email [email protected]

Just remember you'll not be wasting anyone's time by getting checked out. If it isn't serious, you'll put

your mind at rest. If it's bowel cancer, early detection can make all the difference. Over 90% who

are diagnosed at the earliest stage are successfully treated. So a trip to your doctor could save your

life.

New Housing with Care for People with Dementia

Grand Union Housing Group (GUHG), in conjunction with Bellcross Homes are currently building a new,

development specifically designed for people with dementia at Bletchley Park. This will be amongst

the first purpose built Housing with care development for people living with dementia in the country.

The facility will provide those with dementia, in Milton Keynes, a safe place to live, whilst also knowing

that they have the comfort and security of their own home.

The facility will consist of 34 specially designed flats. The building will have communal lounges, an

assisted bathroom and communal dining facilities, enabling the staff, to support the tenant’s

independence through person centred care, managing risk more effectively, whilst also offering the

chance for enhanced privacy and a range of socially stimulating activities.

Who is involved?

Grand Union Housing Group (GUHG)

The scheme will be owned and managed by one of GUHG’s subsidiary organisations, Aragon Housing

Association.

Aragon Housing Association

Aragon Housing Association (AHA) was formed in 1994 following a local housing stock transfer from the

former Mid Bedfordshire District Council. The transfer included a total of 1600 sheltered housing

properties. Today it has around 6,500 homes.

AHA has eighteen sheltered housing schemes as well as having many dispersed bungalows and a

number of small blocks of flats. AHA also has one extra care scheme with care staff on site to provide

personalised support to individuals.

Bellcross Homes

Work by Bellcross Homes started on site in August 2011, and good progress is being made on the

building works. It is anticipated that the development will be complete and ready for occupation

towards the end of the summer 2012.

Milton Keynes Council

MKC will provide the on site care service for the tenants and will work closely with the Housing

Association to ensure the smooth running and organisation of the new development.
