The Associated PressDUCKTOWN — A minor earth-

quake rattled the mountainous area of southeastern Tennessee, western North Carolina and northern Georgia on Saturday morning. No damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 3.2-magnitude temblor hap-

pened about 11 a.m. Saturday. Its epi-center was located about 55 miles east of Chattanooga, near the town of Ducktown.

Local authorities said they received several calls about the shaking, but they had not received any reports of damage or injuries.

Becky Cearley, a dispatcher with

the Polk County Sheriff ’s Depart-ment, described the incident as “pretty intense.”

“It shook the whole entire build-ing for what seemed like forever, but it was just a matter of seconds,” she said.

Three people were sent to the hospital Saturday after a two-car accident turned into a four-vehicle crash on West Lamar Alexander Parkway at the entrance of Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson.

According to Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp, two cars were on the roadway heading in opposite directions at about 4:54 p.m. A 1994 Toyota Camry driven by Kyle Hudson, 16, Morganton Road, Green-back, was attempting to make a left-hand turn into the Harley-Davidson parking lot and pulled into the path of a 1995 Accu-ra Integra driven by Casey Williams, 19, Iddens Way, Louisville, Crisp said.

The force of the impact sent both cars sliding into the Harley-Davidson parking lot entrance where two motorcycle rid-ers were waiting to turn onto West Lamar Alexander Parkway.

This year’s tax-free hol-iday weekend begins at 12:01 a.m on Friday and ends at 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

Tax-free items include clothing with a price of $100 or less per item, school and art supplies with a price of $100 or less per item and com-

puters with a price of $1,500 or less.

Clothing includes: belts, caps, coats, dress-es, gloves, hats, hosiery, jackets, jeans, neckties, pants, scarves, school uniforms, shirts, shoes, socks, sneakers and underwear.

A 45-year-old Knoxville wom-an who went missing Friday after going into Little River near Metcalf Bottoms in the Smokies was found Saturday morning by a volunteer directing traffic at the Townsend Y.

According to Bob Miller, public information off icer with Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Carla Manzoli-

ni, 45, Knoxville, was found at about 10:45 a.m.

Manzolini went missing at about 3:30 p.m. Friday when a park rang-er saw her go into the rain-swol-len Little River. The ranger threw her a flotation device, which she refused, Miller said.

It appears she got out of the river on the far bank and hiked

about half a mile, cross-country and barefoot, until she found Round Top Trail, which led her back to the Townsend Y, he said, adding that Manzolini apparent-ly spent the night in the woods.

She was not very communica-tive, and rangers are not yet sure why she went into the river or what she was doing in the park

in the first place, Miller said. Her car was located by rangers in the Metcalf Bottoms picnic area Fri-day night and her purse and ID were still in the car, he said.

Despite her ordeal, Manzolini was “physically fine” and was taken by Rural/Metro Ambu-lance Service to Blount Memo-rial Hospital as a precaution.

Rangers and other emergency personnel searched for Manzo-lini until dark Friday and two rangers stayed up through the night with flood lights at the Sinks, in case she was still in the water, Miller said. Personnel resumed the search Saturday morning at 6 a.m.

The situation could have turned out very badly, Miller said, and finding Manzolini was “the best outcome we could hope for.”
