What is Influenza (Flu)?Influenza, or flu, is a respiratory illness caused byinfluenza viruses. Symptoms of influenza includefever (often high), runny or stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, headache, tiredness, and muscleaches. Children may sometimes also have nau-sea, vomiting and diarrhea. Some people canhave a severe illness with influenza. They mayhave pneumonia, ear infections, dehydration, andworsening of medical problems such as asthma, heart conditions, and diabetes. People withchronic medical conditions, the elderly, pregnantwomen, and children under 2 years of age aremore likely to be admitted to a hospital for in-fluenza. More than 200,000 people are hospital-ized each year in the United States due to the flu.

How does it spread?Flu is spread by droplets produced by coughingand sneezing. It usually spreads from person toperson but occasionally objects, such as a door-knob, can become contaminated with the virusand serve as a source of infection also.

What can I do to preventthe spread of influenza?Vaccination is the best prevention method avail-able. People who are sick should stay home andavoid close contact with others. Good healthhabits such as washing your hands often, cover-ing your mouth and nose with a tissue whencoughing or sneezing, and avoiding touchingyour eyes, mouth, or nose can prevent youand/or others from becoming ill. Antiviral med-ications are available that can prevent or lessenthe severity of influenza infection; however, thesemedications should only be used for those whoare at higher risk of severe illness.

For more information about local flu vaccine clin-ics or other health resources in Orange County, contact the Orange County Health Care AgencyHealth Referral line at (800) 564-8448 or visitwww.ochealthinfo.com/public/flu.

The City of Cypress has received a number of in-quiries from residents regarding the disposal ofsharps waste. In 2008, California law made it il-legal to dispose of home-generated sharps wastein the trash or recycling containers and requiresthat all sharps waste be transported to a collec-tion center in an approved sharps container.Home-generated sharps waste consists of hypo-

dermic needles, pen needles, intravenous nee-dles, lancets, and other devices that are used topenetrate the skin for the delivery of medicationsderived from a household, including a multi-fam-ily residence or household. Cypress residents have a cost-free option to dis-pose of sharps waste. These items may be takento one of the County’s four Household HazardousWaste Collection Centers (HHWCCs). The Col-lection Centers are open Tuesday through Satur-day from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and are closedon major holidays and rainy days. The twoHHWCC locations closest to Cypress are:! CVT Recycling Center1071 N. Blue Gum StreetAnaheim, CA 92806

! Huntington Beach HHW Collection CenterRainbow Disposal (Use Gate 6)17121 Nichols StreetHuntington Beach, CA 92647

Residents should place the sharps in a heavy-duty, puncture-resistant container with a tightfitting lid. Examples of appropriate containersare empty plastic bottles such as detergent, liq-uid fabric softener or bleach bottles.

Another option available to residents is to pur-chase a sharps disposal “mail-back” envelopefrom a local pharmacy for proper disposal. Re-cently, both CVS and Walgreens have begun tooffer low-cost postage-paid envelopes that allowcustomers to safely dispose of sharps and otherunused, expired or unwanted medications.

Please ask the localpharmacy counterfor more informationon the low-cost dis-posal envelopes.

For more information about sharps disposal, please call the City of Cypress at (714) 229-6680 or visit www.oclandfills.com.

The Orange County Fire Authority wants youand your loved ones to enjoy a safe and happyholiday season. Please review the followingsafety tips to ensure that your holiday celebra-tions are fire safe and injury free.

TREES: A fresh tree will be less of a fire haz-ard than a dry tree.

!When purchasing a live tree, check forfreshness using the following indicators:! A fresh tree is green and needles arehard to pull from branches.! When bent between your fingers, theneedles on a fresh tree will not break.! The trunk end of a fresh tree is stickywith resin.! When the trunk of a fresh tree is tappedon the ground, very few needles will fall offthe tree.

!Do not rely entirely on chemical coatings orsprays to flameproof your tree. Any cut tree, even those treated with flame retardant, willstill dry out. Daily care and watering help atree remain relatively fire resistant longer.

!Cut approximately 2 inches off the trunk ofthe tree before mounting it in a sturdy standwith widespread legs that will hold an ade-quate supply of water. To prevent tipping, very large trees should be fastened to wallsor the ceiling with thin guide wires.

!When setting up a tree at home, place itaway from fireplaces, radiators or othersources of heat. Make sure it’s out of theway of day-to-day traffic and doesn’t blockdoorways. If possible, position the tree nearan outlet so that electrical cords are notrunning long distances.

!After securing the tree, immediately fill theholder base with water. Refill with waterdaily or whenever the supply is low. Keepin mind that heated rooms dry live trees outrapidly, creating fire hazards.

!Avoid placing breakable ornaments onlower branches where children and pets canreach them. Ornaments and other holidaydecorations should be non-combustible orflame resistant.

!Remove your tree promptly after the holi-days. An ignited tree can be completely con-sumed by fire in 3 to 5 seconds andgenerate over 2,000 degrees of radiant heat, making a dried-out tree a serious fire hazard.

!When purchasing an artificial tree, look forthe label “Fire Resistant.” Although thislabel does not guarantee it won’t catch fire,it does indicate the tree will resist burningand should extinguish quickly.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS: The leading type ofequipment involved in the ignition of Christmastrees were lights, cords and plugs. When usinglights to decorate your tree or home this holidayseason, please follow these simple rules:

Indoors or outdoors, use only lights thathave been tested for safety by a recognizedtesting laboratory, which indicates confor-mance with safety standards. Use onlylights that have fused plugs.Check each set of lights, new or old, forbroken or cracked sockets, frayed or barewires, or loose connections, and throw outdamaged sets. Always replace burned-outbulbs promptly with the same wattagebulbs.Do not overload outlets or run extensioncords under carpets, across doorways, under heaters, or pinched behind furniture.Make sure the extension cord is rated forthe intended use.Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electric-ity from faulty lights, and a person touchinga branch could be electrocuted.Keep “bubbling” lights away from children.Such lights are hazardous because thebright colors and bubbling movement cantempt curious children to break the glass, which can cut or tempt them to drink thebubbling liquid which contains a hazardouschemicalTurn off all lights and trees and other decora-tions when you go to bed or leave the house.Lights could short out and start a fire. Before using lights outdoors, check labelsto be sure they have been certified for out-door use.Fasten outdoor lights securely to trees, house walls, or other firm supports to pro-tect the lights from wind damage. Use onlyinsulated staples to hold strings in place(not nails or tacks), or run strings of lightsthrough hooks.

CANDLES: Nearly 85% of candle fire inci-dents are started because of consumer misuse– leaving them unattended or placing them nearcombustible materials.

!Never use lighted candles on a tree or nearother evergreens. Keep candles away fromother decorations and wrapping paper.

!Never leave a burning candle unattended.Place them where they can’t be knockeddown or blown over and always extinguishbefore leaving the room or going to bed.

!Always use heat-resistant and non-tip hold-ers designed for candle use.

!Never put candles near exits, vents or otherdrafty areas.

!Extinguish and discard taper or pillarcandles when they get within 2 inches oftheir holders.

FIREPLACES: While a roaring fire in the fire-place can be cozy, it can also be dangerous ifsafety precautions are not taken.

"Before lighting any fire, remove all greens, boughs, papers and other decorations fromfireplace area.

"Have your chimney inspected and cleanedby a professional at least once a year. Al-ways open the chimney flue or damper toallow smoke to get out.

"Make sure your chimney has a spark ar-restor. Never burn trash or paper in a fire-place as it can float up a chimney and ontoyour roof or into your yard.

"Keep a glass or metal screen in front of thefireplace opening to prevent embers orsparks from popping out on to carpeting.

"Remove ashes in a metal container andnever store them inside your home.

"Do not use kerosene or any other lighterfluid to make the flames burn more brightly– these substances will only coat the insideof your chimney.

" If synthetic logs are used, follow the direc-tions on the package. Never break a syntheticlog to increase the fire or use more than onelog at a time. They often burn unevenly, re-leasing higher levels of carbon monoxide.

DECORATIONS AND TRIMMINGS:Decorations around the home may be hazardous. When purchasing your holiday decorations, remember the following:

"Use only non-combustible or flame-retar-dant materials.

"Choose tinsel or artificial icicles made ofplastic or non-leaded metals. Leaded mate-rials are hazardous if ingested by childrenand/or pets.

" In homes with small children, take specialcare to:! Avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable! Keep trimmings with small removableparts out of reach of children. Pieces couldbe swallowed or inhaled.! Avoid trimmings that resemble candy orfood. A child could eat them!

"When making paper decorations, look formaterials labeled “flame proof” or “fire resist-ant.” Never place trimmings near open flamesor electrical connections. Be especially carefulif paper is used for Christmas costumes.

"Remove all wrapping papers from tree andfireplace areas immediately after presentsare opened. Place papers in a metal-coveredtrash barrel. Never burn them in a fireplace.Wrappings are very flammable and ignitesuddenly and burn fiercely. Pieces of burn-ing paper may rise up the chimney and landon a roof or dry vegetation, starting a roofor vegetation fire.

The Orange County Fire Authority wishes every-one a happy and safe holiday season. For moreinformation about fire safety and prevention, please visit www.ocfa.org.
