Linking Upstream Determinants to Downstream Interventions —
Targeting Health Disparities & Health Equity
12th HEALTHDISPARITIES
CONFERENCEAPRIL 8–10, 2019 • NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
2
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Oftentimes, the situations and circumstances we experience are largely outside of our control. Health disparities and health equity affect each of us in many ways: socially, economically, politically and geographically. The interventions that target these areas are critical to improving health outcomes. The 12th Health Disparities Conference will be a hub for information exchange in addressing health outcomes and the integration of upstreaming and downstreaming approaches across the life course.
This year’s opening plenary includes executive leadership from AARP, AMA, APhA, and NMA, and will be moderated by the Chief Medical Officer for WebMD. We encourage you to attend sessions on data science and digital innovation; intersectionality of social justice; opioids, substance use, and mental health; adverse childhood experiences; HIV and Sexual Health; mobilizing community partnerships; translational health equity science; and policy. The Student Poster Competition and Awards Recognition Ceremony are must-attend events, and do not miss the pre-conference symposium on grant proposal development!
Upstream determinants of health disparities are social, economic, and political factors, largely outside the control of the individual, which have significant direct and indirect effects on populations experiencing them,
while downstream determinants of health disparities are those factors which have a direct or indirect effect on personal health outcomes. An “upstream” approach to preventing health disparities uses interventions which target changes to the natural, built, social, and policy environments which create and/or support conditions that lead to disparate health outcomes among populations, while a “downstream” approach to preventing health disparities uses interventions that target change at the individual level in knowledge, attitudes and/or behaviors.
The overall goal of this conference is to enable participants to become knowledgeable about
upstream and downstream approaches to preventing health disparities across the life course and ways to integrate them in order to provide a more comprehensive approach. At the end of the conference, participants will have a better understanding of how to incorporate both upstream and downstream approaches across the life course in preventing disparate health outcomes at both an individual and population level.
Health disparities and health equity affect each of us in many
ways: socially, economically, politically and geographically.
