Trained in conservation and conservation science, he specialises in 'technical art history': the study of works of art as physical objects, especially the materials and techniques of mediaeval European manuscripts. He has made a study of artists' recipe books, on which he has published numerous catalogues, editions, translations, and commentaries. He is advisor to numerous museums and 2 private collections around the world including the National Libraries of Austria, Sweden, and Egypt. Most recently he has held posts in the Department of Conservation and Restoration, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and at the Universities of Amsterdam and Cambridge. He has been a fellow of the Royal Flemish Academy Institute for Advanced Study, and of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. He co-founded the Art Technological Source Research group for the International Council of Museums. Published by Oxford University Press, 2016
