We are proud to announce that three of Collingwood’s ex-students have been extremely successful in the literary world………….

Helen Macdonald has recently won the Samuel Johnson Prize

for Non-Fiction. This is the UK's most prestigious non-fiction award. Its purpose is to reward the best of non-fiction and is open to authors of all non-fiction books in the areas of current affairs, history, politics, science, sport, travel, biography autobiography and the arts. Helen’s book, named ‘H is for Hawk’, is about how becoming a falconer helped her deal with grief. To read more about Helen’s amazing achievement, please view the recent BBC News report.

Julie Howell has also had a book published this year. It is called ‘Get Your Public

Speaking Mojo Back Forever!: 50 imaginative ideas to help you communicate with confidence’ and has received 15 five-star reviews on Amazon.

Jon Reed is also a published author with his book, ‘Get up to Speed with

Online Marketing’ Many congratulations to all three authors. It is a sure testament to the quality of teaching they received here at Collingwood.

In Year 7 we are very lucky to have a large number of students who are achieving great things outside College too. We would like to celebrate this and share the good news with you ……. Georgia Adams 7H competed in the White Rose Diving competition in Leeds; she performed amazingly and won her heat by a magnificent 16 points and this was against 36 other divers. She then received a silver medal in the finals which was a fantastic win for her and her club! Georgia also won a Silver Medal for Collingwood at the Surrey Schools in September and last weekend won a Gold, Silver and 2 Bronze Medals at the England Talent Games!

Ellie Kirby 7I and Phoenix Govey-Gray 7J competed in the 10/11 Year old British Judo Championships held in Kiddminster. Ellie had three fights, won two, lost one and came away with a Silver Medal. Phoenix had four fights, won two, lost two and came away with the Bronze Medal. Phoenix also picked up a Bronze Medal whilst competing for England at the Venray International Tournament in Holland, while Ellie was awarded the trophy for Performance of the Games after competing at the Surrey Youth Games - what a performance by both girls. Very well done to both of you! Achievements within the College include Mia Lane 7J and Euan Jardine 7D who won two of the first ever Co-Principals’ Awards (which are worth 50 praise points each). Mia and Euan received these awards after speaking at the recent Open Evening. They shared their experiences of starting at Collingwood with all our prospective new parents.

If you have any achievements/news you would like to share with us, we would love to hear about them.

Mr Gregory (Year Manager - Year 7) and Mrs Alsop (Pastoral Support Assistant - Year 7)

We were amazed by the massive size and sense of history in Tiananmen Square, where Chairman Mao proclaimed the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and the tanks rolled in to disperse the crowds who were protesting in 1989. Have you ever eaten scorpion, spider or snake? Many of the group now have, as these were among the exotic delicacies on sale in the night market we visited one evening before leaving Beijing!

The overnight train to Xian was memorable for the small compartments into which we crowded for the 12 hour journey. Even more memorable was the sight of the terracotta warriors which were made according to the instructions of an Emperor more than 2000 years ago and only recently discovered by accident in 1974. The warriors and their horses are lifesize and no two are identical. They occupy a field larger than a football field and there are still thousands more underground waiting to be excavated!

Our final stop was Shanghai, the most modern of China’s cities, with skyscrapers more than 100 stories high. We took an elevator to the top of the Pearl Oriental TV tower and gazed down through a glass platform at the river, ships and smaller skyscrapers far below us.

A highlight of the visit for many people was the visit to Jiangning School, our link school in the Putuo district of Shanghai. We were warmly welcomed and treated to some delightful performances of traditional Chinese music and dancing. Our students also provided enjoyable demonstrations of juggling and modern dancing.

After learning some Chinese calligraphy, most of the group went with students from the school to their homes for one night. Everyone had a different experience of life in a Chinese home and talked excitedly

about what had happened for most of the following day!!

The next China visit will be in 2016 and students currently in Years 9, 10 and 11 will be eligible to apply. Watch this space for details .............
