really well,” she says.Janice says weird and whacky items are always a feature during the Big Beach Clean Up and admits the dead possum certainly tops the list. “We see TVs, chairs, couches, tyres and we see a lot of plastic but to be honest there’s a lot less all around.”The worst spots on the entire coastline are on the roadsides, where people are throwing rub-bish out of their vehicles, and that was one area where the public was definitely not getting the message. “By far, over half of the rubbish always comes from the roadside. But overall I’m very happy. We just keep seeing a decrease every year. This is our fourth event and every time it’s going down so I have to take that as a positive trend.”

Masses of fish cause a stir in Nelson HavenAn influx of “bait fish” in Nelson Haven is believed to be behind the massive number of birds and fish around the Rocks Rd wa-terfront in the past few days.Yesterday afternoon around 100 people were spotted fishing, according to one Weekly reader, who phoned in saying that some were pulling in three fish at a time. Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club presi-dent Doug McKay says the fish were most likely kawhai and were in the haven to feed

on bait fish. The birds would have also been attracted to the bait fish. “It happens this time of year with that many fish com-ing into the Haven,” says Doug. “What is unusual is to see the birds in that close and in those numbers, but it does happen.”The birds and fish were a hot topic on Fa-cebook too. Andrea Seymour wrote: “If Alfred Hitchcock’s classic The Birds film scared you, I would suggest avoiding Rocks Rd. I have never seen anything like it.”

Nelson’s new chief medical officer says the re-gion is healthier than most other parts of New Zealand but its ageing population is a “major challenge” that health officials will continue to deal with.Dr Nick Baker was appointed as the chief medi-cal officer for Nelson and Marlborough at the end of last month and will formally take over the new role at the end of November, replacing Dr Heather McPherson. His job is to be a “mouthpiece” for patients, put-ting clinical concerns in front of the board and district health board management. He says Nel-son’s ageing population is the biggest concern for the region’s health services. “If you look at it, we’re going to have fewer young people to support a grow-ing ageing population and we know that in the five years before people get a serious illness and die they are going to be high users of health care. So if we can delay those five years for as long as possible and expect people to be physi-cally active and fit into an older age group then that is a good thing. “The health of the elderly is a major challenge to us.”That view was backed up by Grey Power Nelson president Neville Male who says the issue is a “sleeping giant” as health services, housing and other services for the elderly could be strained under the weight of too many older people in the region.“He’s spot on there, we just can’t allow our popu-lation to blow out to the numbers we’re seeing now with the people coming here to retire, with-out having something in place that identifies the issues associated and how it will be addressed.”

Neville says the issue is his top priority and Grey Power is working on a plan in place to help deal with the growing population of older people. But Nick says our weakness is also our strength and although there are a lot of elderly in Nelson, they tend to be healthier here than in other parts of the country.

“We’re quite lucky that we have a healthy community and we have a longer life expectancy than many parts of the country. We have a climate that supports a longer life expectancy and we’re a less deprived community. There are a lot of things going our way.”Along with a healthy community Nick says Nelson also has a strong level of staff which helps keep Nelson’s cus-tomer satisfaction reasonably high.

“One thing that’s different from many other parts of the country is that we have senior medi-cal officer-driven care a lot of the time. We have very, very few junior staff that means people can get a more coordinated service and because we have relatively low staff turnover. People can get care from the same person for a number of years and that is a good thing.”A paediatrician who has been in Nelson for 20 years, Nick says the region is also lucky to have high quality GPs and he believes Nelson is in a good position health-wise. “A lot of what I’ll be trying to do isn’t about new services, it’s about existing services working better together.”

It may not be up there with Lucifer, Anal or V8 but Nelson baby Alfie Biggs had his mid-dle name rejected for the exact same reason – it was on the government’s banned list for baby names. But his mother wouldn’t have that and successfully argued the ban, receiving his birth certificate last week with his full name – Alfie Baron Biggs. Each year the Department of Internal Affairs releases a snapshot of the most rejected names. This year they included Juztice, King, Majesty, E, Ma-fia No Fear, 4Real and Rogue. Others tried to call their chil-dren by symbols like full stop (.), a star (*) and 89.Baron falls in the “royals” list of banned names that also includes King, Princess and Royal. But Marianne Hart-Biggs ar-gued the name wasn’t about giving her son a “title”, just something meaningful. “Baron came from where Glen and I lived in London when we got married. We lived in Bar-on’s Court and we always had that in our mind for a middle name if we were to have a son.”She says it never dawned on her that the name would be

banned and was in shock when a letter arrived from the department of internal affairs to say the name had been re-jected.“I got a letter back and my friend who was reading it over my shoulder said ‘ah, this is awkward’. I thought ‘oh, what am I going to do now?’”After a week of thinking about it with her husband Glen, Marianne decided to write back and try to argue the name should be allowed but conced-ed it was a long shot.“When I wrote back the first point I made is that his name is Alfie and his title is Mas-ter, Baron is his middle name. The only times it will be seen is on his passport and driv-ers licence. Basically no one is going to refer to him as Alfie Baron Biggs.“I explained the sentiment be-hind the name and I sent in a copy of our marriage certifi-cate that showed our address in Baron’s Court when we got married but I thought there is no way they’re going to accept this.”

To her shock a package arrive a couple of weeks later with Alfie’s birth certificate, includ-ing his middle name. Mari-anne says she did a “wee jig” at the letterbox. “I was so happy, I called Glen and said ‘our boy has a middle name’.”

She says he’s been sleeping through the night much bet-ter since the birth certificate arrived. “He couldn’t sleep before without his middle name, he’s much more settled now and I feel like he is complete.”

A branch from an historic tree in the Brook was lucky not to hit any children walking home from school, says an onlooker.Tracey Royal-Malone was walk-ing her two children and a friend from Nelson Central School to their home in the Brook when they came across a broken branch mo-ments after it crashed across the footpath they were walking along and into a neighbouring prop-erty on Seymour Ave. The Nel-son City Council-owned tree has since been cut down and it says it is concerned at how a gust of wind was able to bring down a several hundred kilogram branch. “Yes of course the council is concerned. A lot of effort goes into managing our street and heritage trees but it is always a difficult process manag-ing a mature tree population in a urban environment,” says manager of communications Angela Ricker.Tracey says it’s only due to good luck that they weren’t any closer at the time. “Usually the boys would ride ahead on their scooters but a gust of wind took my hat off my head so they waited until I’d found it in a neighbours front yard. If I hadn’t

taken that extra few minutes to find my hat the boys may well have been right under that branch when it fell.”She says neighbours came running out of their homes after the branch crashed down and other parents said they heard the crack as it came down. “You just don’t know where you would have been at the time if we’d just kept on walking instead of stopping to get my hat. It’s pretty scary.”NCC says a branch that size falling isn’t a regular event but it can hap-pen in certain circumstances. “It was a combination of the age of the tree and the force and direction of the wind. There had been no ex-ternal signs of decay or damage to the tree but there are signs of in-ternal decay which have weakened the limb. This decay has only be-come visible since the limb fell so it couldn’t be predicted,” says Angela.Council-owned heritage trees are surveyed every two years for a health assessment. The council is currently adding all the street trees in Nelson onto the GIS database which will be “a useful tool” for keeping an eye on the age and con-dition of the trees.

Branch breaks on school kids’ path home

A branch that came down on a Seymour Ave footpath happened just moments before children walking home from school came across it.

Village deal sparks scenes of ‘jubilation’The deal is done, Waimea Village will officially be owned by its residents.Negotiations have been protracted over the past week and a half and the scheduled day for the village to go unconditional has been extended twice. But last Tuesday the current owner of the village and the man who helped broker the sale released a joint statement saying it would go ahead and on Friday it went unconditional. The sale of the 172-home village sparked scenes of “jubilation” in the village. “We’re all so happy, we can’t believe it. It’s the best day this village has seen in a long, long time,” said one resident. The sale will end almost three years of bitter dispute between the residents of the village and its owners Michael and Carolyn Wright. The chairman of the residents committee at the village, Jerry Rowland, says he received a phone call from Kit Maling to say the papers had been signed and his initial reaction was “elation”.

“No doubt about it, it is one hell of a relief.”He says the announcement was even sweeter as he’d had some concerned residents calling him saying that Michael Wright had told them the deal was off and any money they’d put forward as part of the deal would be lost. “I have no idea why he said that, all I know is that he made that statement and I had people call me up wanting to know what had happened and they were very upset.”Jerry says committee members were walking up and down the streets of the village, knocking on doors to let people know of the sale and the general reaction was “relief and jubilation”.The deal will mean more than 140 of the 172 home owners will buy a slice of the village. It will be managed by a board, which will employ a part time manager. The remaining home owners will continue to be lease holders.Settlement for the sale and purchase of the village will be finalised on Friday, November 29.

Girls take end of year plunge

More govt money for housing trust

More than 100 Nelson College for Girls students took the ultimate plunge last week, jumping off the Wakefield Quay wharf. The tradition of jumping from the wharf in their uniforms on the last day of school started three years ago and follows similar traditions from other girls’ schools in New Zealand. Most of the leaving year 13 students took part in the jump, a spectacular sight as 100 students bobbed in the water, waiting their turn to climb up one of the three ladders and back onto the wharf.Callie Stones, 17, says she was nervous prior to the jump and was a little concerned about the temperature of the water. “It was so much fun though,” she said as she and her friends shivered on the wharf after the jump. While there were some nervous looking faces before they jumped the screams and laughter once in the water was deafening. “That was so cool,” shouted one girl from the water.

More low-cost Nelson homes will be built in Stoke thanks to a $374,000 grant from the government.Housing Minister and Nelson MP Dr Nick Smith announced the funding for the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust to build three more community social houses on Kawai St South. It caps off a great year for the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust, which has already opened two low-cost housing developments in Victory and The Brook. The trust has

grown from six homes in 2008 to 39 homes, including this latest announcement. The growth has been funded from government grants, commercial bank loans, the Canterbury Community Trust, and sweat equity. It has also been assisted by the Nelson City Council waiving development contributions for the homes.Nick says the homes and the community housing sector are an “important part of the solution” to providing affordable homes in Nelson.

“The Nelson Tasman Housing Trust is a real success story in the community and a model example of the type of community groups the government wants to encourage into providing social housing.”He says the housing challenge is a big one throughout the country but he feels the government is making “real progress”.“[But] there is no magic bullet to solving Nelson housing affordability problems.” Nick says the government is committed to taking actions on a range of fronts

including freeing up land supply, reining in council development charges, scrutinising building material costs, investing in skills and productivity, keeping interest rates lower for longer, reforming the Resource Management Act, and expanding Welcome Home Loans and the KiwiSaver First Home Deposit Subsidy.“The real joy will come on the day these homes are completed and three more families get a healthy, safe and affordable roof over their head.”

While the accolade has been given out to Nelson firefighters before, Kevin Shea, president of the Nelson Marlbor-ough Gold Star Association says the ceremony to recognise nine different men and women was a great achieve-ment for the region. "With the fluctuation of numbers in the fire service today, with people com-ing and going, it's fantastic that we had a large number of firefighters achieve their gold star."

He says some of the firefighters who were acknowledged thought it was "no big deal, they're just doing their job" with some not wanting to have a cer-emony highlighting the fact. "Some of the old school guys treas-ure them and they should, it is a great achievement for them. It's a special oc-casion for our patch."Each of the recipients was presented with a solid gold medal on behalf of the Nelson Fire Service and the United Fire Brigades Association, which they will wear on their lapel, by Terry Douglas past president of the Association. He said it was a "great privilege" to be do-ing the honours. Every two years after receiving the gold star, each firefighter will be awarded with a bar to attach to the ribbon of their medal.

Figures are good news for retailersNelson has once again recorded strong spend-ing growth, ahead of the national average.Figures released last week by payments provider Paymark show spending through the Paymark network was up 8.1 per cent nationally from October 2012 to October 2013. In Nelson the news was even better, with spend-ing increasing by 8.3 per cent.Paymark, which processes around three quar-ters of all electronic transactions in New Zea-land, also recorded a strong seasonally adjusted month-on-month spending result, increasing 1.7 per cent from September to October and 2.5 per cent when fuel spending is excluded.Paul Whiston, Paymark's acting CEO, says that the Christmas build-up is imminent, and they typically see spending jump repeatedly over the last three months of the year. “This result is a good start for retailers as they begin their pre-Christmas campaigns. We are seeing an above average month-on-month result, which indicates that growth is happening above and beyond the usual trends,” he says.Last year $74.3 million was spent in Nelson through the network, this year it was up to $80.5 million. While there was 1.48 million transactions in 2012 and 1.6 million this year, an increase of 8.2 per cent.

There was always going to be hesitation moving New Zealand’s longest running automotive and entertainment show out of Christchurch, but the promoter of the V 4 and Rotary South Island Champs is now thrilled with the decision to come to Nelson.Azhar Bhamji estimated that 7000 people attended the two-day event, which included drag racing in Motueka and a show and shine at the Trafalgar Centre. While the number of spectators was slightly down on what attended Christchurch’s show pre-earthquake, the competitor figures were actually higher.Speaking from the Trafalgar Centre on Sunday, Azhar says the response from Nelson car enthusiasts had been “absolutely awesome”, and it was 90 per cent likely that the event would return annually. “People kept coming to me and said ‘we needed something like this to happen to our town.’ They had speedway, and the drags four times a year, but nothing like this has really been here,” he says. “We were a little hesitant in the beginning but with the

response and the immediate competitor entries we’ve got we knew this was going to work.”Some event-goers, who had attended the show in Christchurch previously, commented that there was less to see and do, but Azhar was well aware of that and says the first year in Nelson was all about

building relationships and cementing its future here. He hopes that a drift competition and dyno challenge could be part of an expanded event in the future. “We want to increase the entertainment factor with more vehicle unveilings including some vehicles from overseas that no one has really seen. On

top of that we want to bring in drifting, burnouts in confined space, gymkhana and things like that. But those happen in environments where we can create and we need space for that. People know what we’re all about now and we’ve brought in so much revenue. In our hotel alone we had 40 rooms booked.”

Circulation of the Nelson Mail has taken another whopping drop, losing almost 10 per cent of its paid circulation in the past 12 months. The latest independently audited figures show the Mail has now sunk to only 12,614 copies over a possible circulation of almost

50,000. The paper also gives away an ad-ditional 465 copies per day.The New Zealand Audit Bureau of Circula-tions publish figures every quarter and the latest stats show a 5.29 per cent drop on the previous three months and 9.51 per cent drop on the same time last year.

That equates to around 1400 lost subscrib-ers in the past year. The drop is again among the highest of any daily newspaper in the country, only the Oamaru Mail and the Timaru Herald performed worse in the South Island and it was a similar story in the North Island.

The Fairfax-owned Nelson Mail has been cutting costs in an effort to save the paper, with at least a dozen redundancies this year alone. It has also out-sourced all of its ad design work to India, which has allowed it to cut local jobs.

November is White Ribbon month and that means it’s time to talk about violence towards women. I know that the majority of men are not violent, however we cannot escape the fact that most violent acts against women are carried out by men.All men need to step up and be part of finding a solution to this problem. After all, we all have women in our lives, be they our mother, grandmother, wife, sister or daughter and we can’t stand by and see them subjected to violence. In New Zealand on average 14 women are killed by their partner or ex partner each year and one in three women will experience some sort of violence from their partner in their lifetime. The White Ribbon campaign challenges all men to be role models for our children and to help build a culture where violence of any sort is not condoned.I’d like to clarify that violence is not just a physical act. Controlling behaviour, psychological and emotional abuse can all be equally damaging to a victim. Many victims say it’s actually worse than physical violence. So what can you do?Well for a start you can go to the White Ribbon website and sign the pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence to women. That’s the easy bit. Next you may have to challenge the attitudes or behaviour of your mates or your work colleagues. If you struggle to control your temper or you’re someone who has been violent now is the time to man up and do something about it. There is support available so make use of it. Visit whiteribbon.org.nz to sign up and check out the resources available there too.

Shop ‘n’ Win returnsFollowing on from the huge success last year Richmond’s biggest competition is about to start again. The Waimea Weekly/Richmond Unlimited Shop ‘n’ Win starts today. In its seventh successful year the competition gives a customer in a local participating business a chance to win $5000 cash and the shop itself wins $2000 cash. Over 45,000 entries were received last year and Weekly publisher Steve Page reckons it will get to 50,000 entries this year. A list of participating shops is advertised in the Weekly on a weekly basis for the next five weeks and the competition finishes on December

15 with the results in the special Weekly holiday issue. The shops involved will have posters on the front windows and entry boxes in store with Richmond Mall having entry boxes at the main desk. “We are really happy that it’s such a local event and that it also encourages shoppers from all over to spend some time in the real centre of retail for the region,” says Steve. “It’s a great way for the local retailers to say thanks for your business and offer an opportunity to give something back.” He also wants to remind customers entering to fill out the forms correctly or they will be invalid.

Page 16-17Teens work for smokes

The rising cost of cigarettes won’t deter a group of Nelson students despite many of them working part time jobs to pay for their habit.Nelson Weekly spoke with a

group of teenage smokers who are either at high school or re-cently finished. All were girls and all started when they were still too young to buy tobacco. Most still are too young. They say they “don’t know”

why they smoke but buy their tobacco at Nelson retailers who notoriously don’t ask for ID and if they don’t have enough money to buy a whole pack-et, will go halves with their friends, because they simply can’t go without their daily in-take of nicotine. Some even go to the effort of brushing their teeth to cover any lingering smell on their breath before visiting boyfriends who don’t know about their habit.

One Nelson College for Girls student tampered with her ID to make her age appear over 18 and others get parents, friends or older siblings to buy it or simply visit shops that don’t ask for ID.An announcement by the gov-ernment in last week’s budget that the price of cigarettes is set to rise by ten per cent every year for the next four didn’t even deter them. “I’ll keep smoking, I can’t stop,” says high school student Hannah Flem-ming, 17. The girls paid for their tobacco

by working part time jobs out-side of school time with a cou-ple working full time. Most said their parents were

against their smoking “but couldn’t do anything”. Others admitted smoking at interval and lunchtime while at school and even smoking in their car so they wouldn’t get caught by

Sirens try to smash derby foesThere were thrills and spills as some of the South Island’s feistiest women took to the track in front of a full house for the first ever tri-ple header hosted in Nelson. Though the Sirens fought a good

battle, it was the Dunedin Derby Gallow Lasses that took out the trophy in frong of 2000 people. “It was a little bit disappointing that we didn’t win for our home crowd, but we’re still new,” says Siren Tara

Forde. The three teams that took part would like to see the event become an annual competition. “We’re just really thrilled that it all went so well and the support we got,” says Tara.

Suter upgrade questionedThe idea of building a brand new art gal-lery instead of trying to “make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear” at the Suter has been floated this week.Nelson City Councillor Paul Matheson says it is worthwhile investigating whether the $6.9 million council is proposing to

spend on upgrading the Suter could be better spent building a brand new facility at Rutherford Park. Discussion opens this week on the long term plan and Paul says he will be asking the Suter if that option has been explored as he thinks it will make much better use of the money. “We spent $3million on the cricket pavilion at Saxton Field and that is

fantastic. What could we do with $6mil-lion at Rutherford Park for an art gal-lery? Sometimes we just need to step out-side that comfort zone that we have built around a project and have a look outside the square.”But Craig Potton, the chair of the trust board that runs the Suter Art Gallery, says the Suter’s history cannot be ignored and

he believes the cost would be around dou-ble that of the current proposal.“We have a design and a feel for that space that we are happy with and it incorporates the oldest gallery in New Zealand, on our own property. That site of the gallery is the longest running public sited gallery in

battle

Natureland is again in for a fight for sur-

vival after the trust that runs the zoo an-

nounced last week that it was pulling the

plug on managing it.

The Orana Wildlife Trust told Nelson City

Council that it was withdrawing from op-

erating the park because of the impact the

Canterbury earthquakes has had on its

own park.

NCC is now waiting on a staff report be-

fore discussing the future of the zoo at a

meeting next Tuesday, June 26.

Mayor Aldo Miccio says the news is a blow

but he understands the situation facing

Orana.“We appreciate the effort that they’ve put

into Natureland to date and understand

that they’re facing some pretty huge chal-

lenges in Christchurch which have meant

they can’t focus on improving Natureland

as much as they had intended to.”

Orana Wildlife Trust took over the opera-

tion of Natureland in October 2008. It will

operate as usual until a decision on its fu-

ture is made. One possibility is to call for

expressions of interest for another opera-

tor to take over running Natureland.

“We’ll move forward to considering the

options and discuss them next week.

Volunteer work

‘best job ever’

SPCA volunteers usually receive thanks in the form

of a wagging tail or affectionate purr. This week,

those acknowledging their efforts will be much

more eloquent.

Reina Flavell and Alice Robinson are amongst

more than 150 young Nelsonians nominated for the

Youth Volunteer Awareness Recognition Event to

be held this Thursday as part of Volunteer Aware-

ness Week. The event is run by Volunteer Nelson,

Nelson and Tasman councils and Youth Councils,

and The New Hub. It will be held at the Nelson Col-

lege Hall after the New Hub building, the original

venue, was given a poor rating on the recent earth-

quake assessment, leaving activities suspended.

The night will include prominent guest speakers

and a selection of Nelson youth performances will

provide entertainment. Every nominee will receive

a certificate to signify their nomination and the

contribution they make to society.

“Volunteers are the glue that make our commu-

nities stick together and there are a lot of young,

Local students from left; Francis Paolo Meria, Matthew Mount, Natalie Davies, Nicky Marshall, Ziyana Lopez will take to the stage at Nelson Musical Theatre this week to perform "Title of Show", Nelson's newest musical. The performance will be at 7.30pm this Thursday through until Sunday at the Nelson Musical Theatre. Tickets $20 student, $25 adult.

The daily school routine is now over for another year group, but before students can put their feet up for the holidays or think about summer jobs and preparing for university, the focus will be on a hectic month of NCEA exams.Nayland College principal Rex Smith, who was just putting the final touches on his end of year speech at the time of calling, says 2013 was a positive one. He says the focus of a secondary school has needed to change over the past few years due to a push in making sure that 85 per cent of Year 12 students obtain NCEA Level 2. “So we’ve really had to focus on the pathways and that’s the big challenge for schools over the next few years,” says Rex.

He believed Nayland College was “well placed” to meet that figure though, with a trades acad-emy set up to aide students who may not be top academics. “It’s always a balancing act because we’ve got top academic ones with some good scholar results that we’d like to build on.”Nayland College held its end of year senior prize giving on Thursday afternoon. The two major winners were Patrick Savill who won the Palmer Award for all round excellence and Flynn Grace who was named the Dux.At other schools, Kate Fraser was named Nelson College for Girls Dux and also claimed the At-more Memorial Scholarship, while Oliver Cole-man collected the Nelson College Dux.

Tuesday October 29The local woman who busted a burglar mid break in at her home has been overwhelmed with positive response from her story in the Nelson Weekly. Police are yet to catch the culprit but Michelle Hansen has had lots of feedback from people who have similar stories and have stopped her in the street to share them with her.She says she has mostly had praise from people who told her "good on you" for the way she dealt with the situation, but she also had a local alarm company ring her offering to help install a sys-tem.

Tuesday October 22Tracey Alexander from the coffee cart says she's had loads of people saying they loved seeing her in the Nelson Weekly talking about her daily duck visitors. She says Daisy and Donald haven't hatched their ducklings yet but is sure they can't be too far off as the duo have been taking it in turns to come to town, a sure sign that someone is staying back each day to sit on the eggs at the nest.

Tuesday October 22The Nelson Cake Decorators and Sugar Artists Guild had a fantastic turnout to the national conference which they hosted two weekends ago. Around 230 of the country's best cake dec-orators came to town. The Nelson guild took a number of different prizes home, including first place in the Stuart Shield and seocnd palce in the Una Stuart Shield.

It may not be as big as Anzac Day but the strong turnout for Remembrance Day on Sunday was "heartening" says organiser of the Nelson event, Derek Nees.More than 100 people turned out for the com-memoration to recognise the signing of the Ar-mistice between the Allies and Germany that ended World War I. Derek says he was thrilled with the turnout. "It was probably the best turn-out we've ever had and it's much thanks to the Nelson Weekly for the article in the paper. It was a great day and I was thrilled that so many came."One of those that came to the Nelson service for the first time was senior constable Mick Moor-house who has recently moved to Nelson from Christchurch. He served in the Brit-ish military and was wearing his great grandfather's medals that were from the Boer War. He says it was the first time they'd been out in decades and it was "special" to revive the fam-ily history. The service included a speech from former Nelson man and Command-er Phil McBride of the Royal New Zealand Navy.

A third clothing giveaway will be held later this month to help those strug-gling to afford them. The clothing giveaway was held for the first time last year after the successful Plunket Baby Bonanza. It went so well Plunket decided to hold one in Stoke after the April bonanza and Plunket’s Jo Hender says it is likely to become a regular thing.“There is a real social need out there, whether they are refugees or just find-ing times really difficult so kids do go without sometimes which is re-ally heart-breaking. Everyone wants to clothe and feed their children so this is just helping along with that.”The clothing giveaway will be held on Wednesday, November 27 from 11.30am to 1pm at the Victory Com-munity Centre and will allow families to come in and pick up baby clothes for free. Volunteers will also provide a lunch of club sandwiches and fruit.Jo expects this year’s event to be bigger than last year when more than 50 fami-lies took advantage of the free clothes. “This year will be bigger to be honest. People are anticipating it and word is getting around that it’s ok to come along and get some clothes. It’s definite-ly filled a gap, which is nice to know.”

She says there aren’t many Nelson fami-lies in the situation where they can’t af-ford clothing but some do slip under the radar or don’t get as much as they’d like them to. She says the families are extremely appreciative of the clothing. “They are really thankful for what they get and appreciative to the community giving the clothes, it does mean a lot to them. There is a really big need.”Anyone wanting to donate any baby clothes to the give-away can drop them off at any Plunket office and those who’d

like to volunteer on the day, make some club sandwiches or perhaps bake a cake can contact Jo on 539 5200.“A lot of the time you see need and you can’t fix that all the time. We don’t have a magic wand to make it disappear, even though you’d like it to. So this is a great way to see a need being met and being able to help is really heart-warming.”Plunket nurses will also be on hand to answer any questions and Jo says any family from around Nelson is invited to come along.

Next year marks a century since the begin-ning of the first world war and there are several local projects planned to help com-memorate it, including one that will feature 2000 local faces.War was declared by Britain in August 1914 and among the millions that fought were thousands from Nelson and Tasman. Before they went to serve for King and country many of the men would have a por-trait taken, an opportunity to take a photo-graph of their family with them or for their families to keep while they went away says Cliff Riordan, of the museum. “Sadly many of these men may not have returned home. So in many cases it would be the last image of them. That’s quite tragic.”The Nelson Provincial Museum has around 2000 of those photos in its collection, many forming part of the Glass Plate Collection that has been digitised and put online. Cliff says the timing of those photos being put online couldn’t be better and it will allow lo-cal families to go onto its website and look for ancestors that may have served.“We’ve currently got over 30,000 images on-line, a large number of those are from that period – 1914 to 1918 – and a lot of them are in uniform. It’s actually a really valuable resource and its timing, as far as the cente-nary of WWI goes, is perfect.”Cliff says the museum has a good collection of portraits but also photos from the Tapaw-era Military Camp, thanks to local photog-rapher F N Jones who served. “F N Jones is a great source because he served and he took a lot of photographs at Tapawera Military Camp and they are fantastic, really lovely

images of day-to-day life in the camp.”The majority of the photographs are named but there are some that aren’t and Cliff says they’d be happy to hear from anyone who recognises one of the unnamed photos.“This is a great resource for family histo-rians and hopefully from this we’ll be able

to identify some of the soldiers. If anyone does know anything about any of the photo-graphs in our collection we’d love to know." To send any information to the museum about any of the photos in the glass plate collection simply email details to [email protected].

Waimea College principal Larry Ching jokingly queries if there’s something in the water near the Knight household, as for the first time in the school’s history, a third sibling from the same family has been named as a head student.Just like older sister Alice was in 2011, and brother Hugh this year, Bridget Knight has been confirmed as a head student for 2014. “I was quite stoked,” Bridget says. “It was quite surreal at the time [of the an-nouncement].”The head student position is the highest leadership role at the school. Each year four Year 13s are selected following a rigorous process that includes nomination, a speech to their year group, a student vote, and an interview with the existing head students and the senior management team.Larry confirmed this was the first time three siblings from the same family had been named head students. How-ever, there had been other times when two had secured the role. “It’s certainly unique,” he says. “[Their parents] must have done a great job of raising them. Maybe there’s something

in the water where they live?”Both Bridget and Hugh de-scribed being a head student as a “huge honour” and admitted there had been pressure to fol-low in Alice’s footsteps. “Mum and dad always said it wasn’t something I had to do, it was my choice. But people were al-ways saying I had to do it, and I felt the pressure from them but not my family,” says Bridget.Alice is currently studying at the University of Canterbury

and Bridget says she was the first person she told. “I rang her straight away and she cried. She was so happy for me so that was cool.”Seeing as it was the first time in the school’s history, the family understood the significance, and Hugh was quick to thank his upbringing. “It’s pretty crazy that nobody has missed out. They’ve obviously brought us up quite well, that pulled us through.”

Proud to support Nelson Fork TrucksCongratulations on your 20th anniversary

It’s always great so see Nelsonians thriving in business – but it’s even better when it’s a business that’s been built from the ground up by people who know what it means to keep it local.Nelson Fork Trucks have been a well known name around town for many years, but for Kim Murdoch and Colleen Bradley it’s pretty hard to believe that 20 years have gone by since they first started out in the forklift business.Starting from humble beginnings with just the two of them operating from home, Kim and Colleen have successfully expanded Nelson Fork Trucks to a solid team of six who offer sales and service, hire and re-pair to locals whose business’ rely on high quality forklift machinery. While a few things have changed over the years, the core interest at Nelson Fork Trucks is fulfilling cus-tomer requirements and that is a big reason why they’ve been able to stick around. They’ve cornered the market and now successfully supply forklifts of all shapes and sizes to suit any type of job, all over the region. When Nelson Fork Trucks first kicked off in 1993, Kim and Colleen’s home was a great starting point but

in their third year it became obvious they were outgrowing being a small business and fast becoming an in demand one stop shop for all things forklift. It was then they decided to move into Cargill Pl and they’ve been based at number 10 ever since.“Moving the business to Cargill Pl was the best decision we could have made. Now we couldn’t be happier with how things are set up with the workshop, yard and offices.

Proud to support Nelson Fork Trucks - Congratulations

The premises have really stood the test of time alongside the business.”The relationships Kim and Colleen have formed with different businesses throughout Nelson has been part of their success and a reason why Nelson Fork Trucks has gone the distance to reach its 20 year milestone. Colleen says they’ve always been proud to be 100% Nelson owned and operated and they pride themselves on supporting other locals too. “We are successful because other local businesses have supported us over the years, so we’ve built many recipro-cal relationships with them and continue to do so today.” Their long term commitment to the region has seen their staff stick by them, with Duncan Cunningham being part of the business for the last 17 years. Kim says he’s proud to have

• It may seem a strange thing for a woman who has spent many years gardening, growing plants, propagating plants, and selling plants, to sudden-ly start talking about having a “plantless” garden. But that is what I am going to do.• Many of us have a spot in the garden that can be a bit of a pest. Extremely dry in summer. Ex-tremely wet in winter. Blazing with sunshine, or the deepest shade that you can imagine. Well I have such a spot.• For years I struggled with this problem, un-til one day I had a brainstorm. Why do I have to grow plants there at all? Over the years I have collected various bits and pieces of terra cotta. Curious shaped pots and urns. Animals of all de-scriptions. Blanket babies, which are small dolls wrapped in huge blankets. Even a “snail house” with a gap for snails to crawl in and hide. So, why not have a terra cotta garden?• Well I got started and cleared away any plant debris that lay about untidily, and arranged my terra cotta garden. It was fun. Visitors would look strangely at me when invited to see this specta-cle, but I didn’t care, I’m very happy with it, and still collecting more pieces to add to the garden. I don’t mind anything that is chipped or cracked, it can always be cunningly turned about to suit. Anyway a bit of wear and tear adds character.• But I also have another almost “plantless” gar-den. This time it is a “tufa pot” garden.• For several years our daughter and daughter-in-law made a tufa pot each, to give to me as a birthday present. I was always delighted with this. [Tufa pots and real manuka honey is all I ever need for a present nowadays]. Anyway, I made a

special place for all these lovely handmade pots, and commenced to plant them up. BUT, many of the plants grew too vigorously and covered the pots, so that the only time that I could enjoy my birthday presents was in the winter, when the plants had died down.• So, along came another brainstorm. Why have anything in them anyway? But that idea was a bit too much to handle. So I planted up my treas-ures with spring bulbs, which die down in the summer, thus revealing their containers for my pleasure. This has turned out to be a good plan, because I know exactly where the spring bulbs are, and there is no danger of digging them up by mistake.• But I can’t let you go without mentioning some plants, eh. A young woman asked about nastur-tiums as a ground cover. She had a patch outside her kitchen window that she wanted to cover rapidly. Alas she didn’t receive the help from me that she had hoped for. I pointed out to her that nasturtiums are popular fodder for the large white butterfly, and I would have nothing to do with suggesting them as a suitable ground cover, even though I love them dearly [and alas, have removed them from my garden, I might add.] But I have been thinking about this and wonder if a crop of pumpkins would be a good idea.• The foliage is much like that of the nasturtiums, and if she planted the orange skinned variety the effect would be similar, and there would be the satisfaction of watching her winter store of food growing! In the meantime, keep on keeping on with your garden experiments. It’s a lot of fun.

As a classy lady I know the importance of looking good whilst still maintaining your own sense of style. There is nothing worse than seeing someone wearing the same outfit as you – well the same should go for jewellery!! At Glenda James Jewellers we know all too well the importance of being individual. This is one of the many things men just do not understand about us ladies! How many times have you dropped hints to your man and it seems to go in one ear and out the other – its as if they would rather be at the pub where they can drink beer, fart and burp with their mates, leaving us ladies feeling like they just don’t care! The one thing they do understand is that ‘Happy Wife = Happy Life’!!!Many men see their role in the relationship as being the ‘Provider”, there is nothing better they can provide for us than jewellery. We tell them size doesn’t matter but let me tell you ladies we all know it does!!!!!!At Glenda James Jewellers we will accept all of HIS Mastercards, Visas and eftpos cards (as long as you know his pin numbers!!!) My Man says he checks his visa statements but I know he never does! (if he gets cranky, I know just how to keep my man happy!).

While technology has significantly reduced the amount of discomfort Anne Michelle has on hand a variety of numbing sprays and gels. “When you come into my business you get a lovely comfy chair, aromatherapy, and some soothing music to help you relax along with some great conversations, and a little bit of humour” says Anne Michelle. “I also am very aware that hair removal is a serious business for a lot of people in particular teens and the mentally challenged so I work very hard to make sure my clients are very happy with the results”. Twilight GalaGet ready for some serious fun this Friday as Hampden St School comes alive to celebrate its annual Twilight gala, as well as its annual art exhibition. This fun family evening will attract huge crowds of peo-ple from within the school community and all around the region, who choose to support the school’s fundraising efforts every year. Not only does the gala support the school’s pastoral fund but it will also go towards the library and long term pro-jects.This year’s event will see many favourites return, with amusements such as a bouncy castle, the mega slide, water walkers, the Cadet assault course, the Ferris wheel, mini jeeps, face painting , crazy hair, Flossie the balloon lady and much, much more. Coordinator Sarah Mil-ligan says among the usual Hampden St gala traditional attractions will be an all new ‘haunted house’ which she expects will be incredibly popular.“We’ve put our heads together and come up with a few new amusements to go alongside the already fun filled entertainment we’ve got lined up. We are really looking forward to a great night.”The food available at the gala has always been a huge draw card and Sarah says this year will be no different, with a

huge variety displaying the diversity of the community available. “Food this year will include a wide range of fabulous foods, from international, hot meat rolls, crepes, fish and chips, toasted sandwiches, a sausage sizzle, along-side plenty of sweets and juices.”The students, families and staff at the school have been

working hard in the lead up to their favourite school event and have organised a great range of stalls, from homemade baking, jewellery, jolly bags to the famous white elephant stall that each year features top qual-ity second hand clothing, books, toys and other household items. Back by popular demand too is the plant stall, which will offer a good variety of shrubbery and flowers, ready to take home to the

garden.Kids games will be aplenty with a chocolate wheel, smash the plate, coin toss, the big dig, horizontal bungee, the sponge throw and more. You can never be too old or too small to enjoy the gala, so there will be plenty of things to see and do for the littlest member of the family, right through to the oldest. The art exhibition, now in its third year has attracted a large number of high quality art works that have been put

up for sale by local artists. The exhibi-tion will be held indoors, so adults will be able to sneak away from the hustle and bustle of the gala to browse the dif-ferent art and pick out a piece that is perfect for your home.Live bands will take to the stage to keep the crowd pleased for the evening too with special performances bya range of

Hampden Street school groups, and guest appearances by 'Noise Control' and popular local band 'Third Wheel'. Sa-rah says the musicians really add to the atmosphere of the event and families can expect to “eat, drink and be merry whilst being entertained by some quality bands from the community.”

Sarah says while the gala is the main fundraiser for the school, it is not just for the school community to enjoy. “We welcome people from all over the region to come and

Waimea Village resi-dents are opening their garages and get-ting rid of second hand treasures. The annual garage sale, run by residents of the village, will be held this Saturday from 8:30am with 12 stalls featuring everything from crafts, clothes and books, to fresh veges and plants. The garage sale is a fundraiser for the vil-lage residents commit-tee. Resident Dennis Ealam says the event has always been suc-cessful and he encour-aged people to come

down for a bargain and to enjoy the BBQ and Devonshire tea. “It’s an annual garage sale that we’ve run ever since the hall was built ten years ago,” he says.

“It’s been hugely suc-cessful in the past.”Resident Bev Friend says the money raised wasn’t equivalent to the popular school fairs, but “for us it has been ideal”.

sample the vibrancy of our school. This is a really great event that can be enjoyed by the entire fam-ily, so come down this Friday and make a night of it.”Those wanting to get a head start and beat the crowds to the preloved cloth-ing sale will have the op-portunity to this Wednesday between 2.30pm and 4pm. As the clothing sale attracts such a huge amount of qual-ity goods, the school will host a ‘Pre-loved Fashion Gala Ex-travaganza’ giving those who are keen the chance to get in first. Up for grabs will be qual-ity babywear, kidswear, teens, mens and womenswear at fabulous prices. There will be labels both international and local, so don’t miss out on the bargains. All proceeds will of course be going straight back into the school. The art exhibition will also be open for extended hours, available to the public on both the Friday evening of the gala and the next day, Saturday be-

tween 11am and 2pm. This is a chance for locals who want a bit more time to look around or who can’t come to the evening exhibition to still get a quality piece of artwork.

Tahuna’s Toni Dowling was among the thousands of shoppers looking for a bargain at the opening of Kmart. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Kmart opens to thousandsThe customers voted with their feet last week with thousands of shop-pers swarming into Kmart's latest outlet which opened in Richmond last Thursday."It's really good value with some great bargains," says satisfied Rich-mond shopper Julia Noble emerg-ing from the new discount depart-ment store with her arms full with baby daughter Zara and some of those bargains. "I got this horse and carriage toy for Zara's second birthday next month for just $3 and I liked the layout because it's more like a department store than a dis-count store."Tahuna's Toni Dowling was also happy with the new store say-ing she had spent $140 on house-hold goods and clothing. She says Kmart's prices are "really good" and it has a good range of items."I had an appointment in Rich-mond so I thought I'd take a look. It's really good - Richmond needed a shop like this."But Kmart isn't just good news for shoppers, according to Nelson MP

Nick Smith who says the new store is also good for the region's econ-omy. The store provides 90 jobs which Nick says will help reduce the region's already low unemploy-ment figures. "The opening of the new Richmond Kmart is a real sign that economic confidence in the re-gion is on the up. New Household Labour Force Survey figures last week revealed that we have the low-est unemployment rate in the coun-try at 3.9 per cent – well below the national average of 6.2 per cent and the lowest rate for some years." The building, owned and con-structed by Nelson firm Gibbons Holdings, is also home to a new Benge & Co Green Grocers, and Couplands Bakery. Next month a coffee shop and sushi store will also open onsite, followed by The Ware-house and a two-storey office block which are due for completion in July next year.Gibbons purchased the former Placemakers site neighbouring Richmond Mall in 2001, and it has sat vacant since 2006.

TUESDAY 12 November 2013 NelsonYour Community Newspaper WeeklyThis Week30

Great day at SPCA:We, Grandma and Grandpop, took our three grandchildren to the

SPCA open day last weekend. The day was bright and sunny and a most enjoyable morning it was. There were many animals to see and handle, many activities designed for children, plenty of available food, and most things, including the entry fee, were by donation. This made it an affordable visit for families and a wonderful opportu-

nity to be involved. Congratulations SPCA and thank you! All the workers, both vol-unteers and staff, did a marvellous job! Yvonne Barry.

Support for frustration over indicators:I agree with you, if everyone indi-cated, maybe that would speed up

drivers going around roundabouts!! It's very frustrating when everyone is wait-ing at roundabouts, especially if there is

no indication which way they are going - roundabouts are designed to keep the traffic moving, but not these Nelson drivers, so come on guys indicate and keep the traffic flowing!! Di King, Tahunanui.

No you are not the only one. Some Nelson drivers,

including professionals, are igno-rant and rude. It is so bad, I now consider round-abouts as com-pulsory stops. As a regular user of them around Richmond you will notice racing, deliberate pushing to merge and speed limits mean nothing. The idea that round-abouts aid in traffic flow is false. Try to get in at peak times, you can wait and wait to move. If we could see the other side then maybe they would promote traffic flow but at their present heights they actually impede it. D. Parsons.

Harbour Master's diary:The Harbour Master's di-ary is interesting and my

question to Dave is, "is it possible to pub-lish in the Nelson Weekly dates for the fer-tiliser bulk carriers arrival prior to their arrival?" This is because of the noise in-terruption to several Tahunanui people. I live in Annesbrook Drive and if I knew in advance when trucks would be passing every five minutes all night I would then have the choice of being away that night. As it is not too frequent an occurrence I feel this may suit some of the residences on the main road.Thank you, Elaine Barrow.

Reply from harbour master Dave Duncan: Good afternoon Elaine, I am glad you enjoy the column. Many thanks for your enquiry and I can advise that fertiliser vessels arriv-als are notified on our website in the Ship-ping Infor/Shipping Schedule information so please do not hesitate to take advantage of that information.

Mitchell Drummond makes Crusaders:Great work Drummy lad!! Ryan Edwards.

Make Nelson proud, my man! Tay O'Carroll.

Congratulations Mitchell... Just awesome. Elena Capstick.

Waimea Village sale completed:Great news for all the residents at Waimea Village, let's hope that all

their worries are over and they can now live in peace. Pauline Bishell.

Lucky for them as it could have been really messy, happy for them.

Odette Jackson.

So pleased for all in the village this will take the pressure of a lot off el-

derly folk well done to all concerned. Gary and Dawn Brown.

It's finally over? Wow. Courtenay Savage.

It is all amazing news. So glad it has been resolved for everyone. Well

done to all the hard work of the commit-tee, and Kit [Maling]. Marion Woodward.

Being a believer in karma, most of the people involved in this disgust-

ing situation will experience good karma - and then there is another couple. Maretta Burbidge.

Red-handed thief could be desperate:Agreed, stealing not good but the powers that be steal from society

with their corrupt laws, people are made desperate. I still operate on trust with my honesty box for veges. Most people are honest, those who don't pay probably are unable to and it's their conscience. (Via text).

4 and Rotary tickets appreciated:Thanks Nelson Weekly for the free tickets to the 4 and Rotary show

today (Sunday). Was awesome to see all the cars there and my boy loved it. Thanks again. (Via text).

National power boat champion Julian Stilwell, of Nelson, in action at the Acceleration On Water, Festival Of Speed Tour at Lake Rotoiti on Saturday. Insert: Julian taking a moment before the race. Photos: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport.

It's not been much of a home advantage but For-mula1 Powerboat racer Julian Stillwell is still smiling after winning the first round of the New Zealand Tour at Lake Rotoiti over the weekend.A local competitor, Julian is the current 1NZ in the top outboard class, but a change in format means that title will be much harder to defend this season. In the past the 1NZ title has been contested at a one off national championship. However, in a move that all drivers supported, it will now be decided over the course of the whole tour. “So whoever accumulates the most points over the series will be the New Zealand cham-pion next year,” Julian explains. So it’s not surprising that the weekend’s victory at the Nelson Lakes Regatta gave Julian plenty of reasons to be happy, having finished second overall in the tour last year. “It’s always a good

one to win I reckon and it was very close, so I know it’s going to be a tough season.”And although he is a local, the Lake Rotoiti course didn’t offer much of a home advantage as Julian doesn’t test up there because it’s a national park. “We generally do the testing on one side of Rabbit Island but it is very hard because there’s limited testing venues and it’s all on a Saturday morning.”The Nelson Lakes Regatta, which was held in as-sociation with the Lake Rotoiti Power Boat Club and Acceleration on Water Event Management, saw a variety of classes contest the two-day event. The feature races included round one of the Ac-celeration on Water Festival of Speed Tour, the NZF1 Tour, Pelorus Jack Trophy, Arthur McCaa Trophy and the South Island titles for Modified Hydroplane and Clubman Classes.

Locals get behind All WhitesAll Whites fanatics from around the re-gion are being welcomed to watch the first leg of the FIFA World Cup qualifier against Mexico at the Suburban Club this Thursday morning. There will be a $10 breakfast beginning at 9am, with the all-important football match kicking off at 9.30am. Stu Reid, who is also part of a 60-strong JPL tour party that will head to Wellington for the second leg six days later, says it's the perfect chance for football fans to gather in the one place and watch the game. The idea of the breakfast came from Paul Brockie, father of All White

Jeremy. "It was four years ago that we qualified for the last world cup so we're all pretty excited about this one," says Stu. "We want the region to get behind it. It'll be much better than watching it at home or on the laptop at work."While the All Whites will certainly be underdogs, especially without captain Winston Reid and 105,000 screaming Mexican fans against them, Stu was qui-etly hopeful New Zealand will be in Bra-zil come 2014. Those wishing to attend the breakfast need to book through the Suburban Club by calling 548 5024.

Stoke/Nayland’s senior cricketers hardly needed added motivation to get off to a good start in their two day match against Wakatu at Vic-tory Square on Saturday, but they got it anyway. The Wayne "Hoddy" Hodgson Me-morial Trophy was up for grabs for the first time after the former Nel-son, Wakatu and Stoke/Nayland slugger passed away earlier this year. While both sides would love to get their hands on the trophy – and win the game – there is no doubt which side it would mean more to. Wayne's son Brendan is an all-rounder in the Stoke/Nayland line up and says it was emotional play-ing for his father's trophy."Absolutely it was emotional for myself and for Colesy [Alex Coles] and Ryan [Edwards], dad had a bit to do with them as cricketers grow-ing up. You could tell that everyone was giving their all on Saturday and Ryan was disappointed to throw a

century away because he said he was going to get a 100 for him."Stoke/Nayland got off to a great start in the game, scoring 308/8 de-clared with captain Ryan Edwards top scoring with 92.Wakatu had a good reply though, scoring 166/3 at the end of the day's play. Ryan says the game is close but if the visitors can get a couple of early wickets this Saturday they will be in the box seat. "I think it makes for a really exciting day next week, if we can nick out a few early it will make it quite interesting."With several players from both teams away with the Nelson repre-sentative team it will make for an interesting day of play.Ryan says Stoke/Nayland is desper-ate for a win, not only for the trophy but to help boost their standing in the two day competition. "It's quite evenly balanced at the moment but hopefully it will be Hod [Brendan] being handed the trophy."

A bumper crowd was in attend-ance for the first drag racing meet of the season. Doubling as the season opener, the V 4 and Rotary South Island Champs brought more street cars and plenty more spectators to the Motueka Dragway on Saturday, with thousands lining the airport runway to check out the quickest cars in the South Island. While drag regular Wayne Stir-ling sped down the quarter mile track in 9.4 seconds clocking 214 km/h to win the C11 class, mak-ing him the overall winner on the day, Nelson Drag Racing Associ-ation president Craig Wray noted there was an influx of street legal

vehicles taking part in some of the minor classes, and that was certainly a positive looking ahead to the rest of the season. “The day went well and there was definitely a noticeably different crowd that was there. There were more street cars there and some of the club competition cars weren’t run-ning, but it worked out well.”Winners in other classes includ-ed; C1 Dave Duncan in 11.1 sec-onds, C3 Donovan Wood in 11.6 seconds, C6 Greg Law in 12.7 sec-onds, C7 Logan Walker in 12 sec-onds, C10 Shane Herbert in 10.4 seconds, and Competition Bike Marty Wilson in 9.8 seconds.NDRA are only allowed to use

the air strip four times a year for drag racing, and Craig was hopeful the club could lure back the new competitors and specta-

tors. “Yeah we want all of them to come back.”The next meet is a hot rod chal-lenge on November 30. “We’re

trying to set themes for our four meetings and obviously the first one was 4 and Rotors, so this will be hot rods.”

Huge turnout for drag racing's season opener
