For more than three decades, the biennial Quilt National exhibit at the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio, has showcased the best and most exciting contemporary art quilts being created around the world. The mission remains the same for this 17th biennial installment: to select works that honor the quilting tradition while embracing new forms of expression through innovative uses of new techniques and materials. Juried by Kingsport artisan Walt Turpening, the show includes 20 exhibitors. All works are original hand-made works of fine craft/art. The show opens with a Gala Event Friday, March 22 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. $35. The gala is a fundraiser for the Carousel Project. Carousel animals and paintings in progress will be displayed. Works in Bay’s exhibit can best be described as eclectic assemblages of found objects, combined with painting. His unique perspective on creativity encourages a critical and sometimes amusing, sometimes tragic and provocative look at the world we live in. Originally from Brooklyn, Bay has been a member of the Radford University art department for many years. He is the recipient of two Fulbright Scholarship awards and a Presidential Citation for Excellence in Education from the U.S. Department of Education. The exhibit is closed during spring break, March 2-11. A reception will be held March 24 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Free. www.milligan.edu/arts. • CLOSING MARCH 31: Andrew Gibbens and Melanie Norris’s artwork is on display at Zazzy’z Coffee House, Abingdon, Va. Gibbens works primarily with linocut block printing and ink. His inspiration for creating block prints arose from seeing the work of a Benedictine monk at a monastery in Southern Indiana. He has used the medium to make images with subjects ranging from religious iconography to portraits to political commentary.
