POLICE in Mpumalanga are appealing to the public to help apprehend eleven suspects who escaped from the Hazyview police station's cells this week. The suspects were awaiting trial for crimes ranging from murder, rape, house robbery to car hijacking. The men are considered to be armed and dangerous. It is alleged they used a hacksaw to cut through a burglar door and fled in the early hours of the morning.Two of the officers on duty were admitted to hospital after being assaulted. They were later discharged.Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Leonard Hlathi said: Intensive investigations are underway to probe this matter to make sure that all that are involved should be brought to book. Let me say that members that are found to be negligent, that led to the escape of these suspects, they are also going to face the full might of the law.A team of investigators are probing the escape. Police insist that the station is secure enough.The public is advised not to approach the suspects. THE Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mpumalanga has made an urgent appeal to the Speaker of the Legislature to cancel recess so that the province can debate how to save the town of Pilgrims Rest from shutting down on 31 July.In the letter to the Speaker, the DA has also asked that Public Works MEC, Dikeledi Mahlangu, be summoned back from France to deal with the imminent crisis being caused by her Department.Public Works has awarded the majority of 21 business leases for core premises in the small tourist town to individuals or companies with no capital, business plan or knowledge of the town. This means that the economic heart of the town is facing imminent collapse if the situation is not rectified within two weeks.If the town shuts down on 31 July, hundreds

of jobs will be lost. Businesses have already had to submit notices of retrenchment to their workers because Public Works failed to guarantee their job security when the leases were awarded. There is also the danger that the collapse of Pilgrim's Rest will have a domino effect on the entire tourism industry in Mpumalanga. Tour operators offer package deals to clients that include Pilgrim's Rest as one of the main attractions on routes through Sabie, Lydenburg, Graskop and other tourism hubs. If this option is no longer viable, jobs will be lost everywhere, not just in Pilgrims Rest. We are appealing to the Speaker to take the jobs of workers and the provincial tourism industry seriously by cancelling recess and ordering the Public Works MEC to return to South Africa immediately.

AansteeklikVerkoue en griep is aansteeklik. Dit beteken een mens kan dit aan n ander oordra. Maar daar is ander dinge wat ook aansteeklik is. Iets soos humor. n Ou wat n goeie, snaakse storie goed kan vertel, laat baie mense lekker lag.Pessimisme is aansteeklik. En hierdie een is gevaarlik. Ek loop self die risiko wanneer ek so gal braak teen swak diens of onbeholpenheid of pleinweg onnoselheid, dat

ander ouens aans teek en e rg pessimisties raak.Wanneer mense geneig is tot depressie, floreer hulle op pessimisme. Neem nou maar die ekonomie. Wanneer die Platinumprys laag is en myne maak toe, is almal pessimisties oor die ekonomie. Dit is te verstane, want dit raak die mense wat hulle werk verloor en die besighede wat kontrakte verloor direk, erg negatief.Die vraag is egter, raak dit almal ewe erg? Die antwoord is, natuurlik nie. As jou besigheid net van een myn wat toemaak afhanklik is, het jy sekerlik n probleem. Maar die meeste besighede werk nie so nie. Hulle doen sake met verskeie myne en met ander besighede. So 10% van my

besigheid kom van die myne af. Feitlik niks van die staat af nie. En dieselfde geld vir honderde besighede daar buite. Nou waarom dan die e k o n o m i e s e p e s s i m i s m e ? K y k n a j o u besigheidsvennote. Groei jou dienste na ander toe. Ondersteun en doen besigheid met ander en maak so die tekort op. Klink maklik, maar ek weet dit is nie so maklik nie.Dit word makliker as ons n kopskuif maak en ons immuniteit teen aansteeklike pessimisme so bietjie sterker maak. Kom ons spring in en dryf self die plaaslike ekonomie. Sluit aan by die sakekamer, by BNI en ander inisiatiewe. Promofeer en adverteer jou dienste en produkte. Verbeter jou klintediens en stel iemand vriendelik aan by jou toonbank en telefoon. Werk aktief teen die pessimisme gogga.

Martin en Mara Theunissen, Ohrigstad skryf: Ek moet vandag my kop in skaamte laat sak. Ek was een van die mense wat ges het ons Staats-hospitale is pateties, wel ek het Vrydagaand met my kind na die Hospitaal gegaan omdat hy nie medies het nie. Dit was 'n krises en ek was genoodsaak om by Ongevalle aan te klop vir hulp. Op die oog af het dit nie te goed gelyk toe ek daar instap nie, die Sekuriteitswag het ons vriendelik tegemoed gekom en ons geneem na toelatings. Die man het gevra of my seun baie pyn het en het hy my gevra om my seun eers deur te neem na Ongevalle en dan terug te kom na toelatings toe. Daar het n manlike verpler JJ Mashego my seun gehelp gemaklik gemaak op die bed en gevra of hy allergies is vir enige iets en hy het hom toe 'n pynstiller gespuit. Hy het ons meegedeel dat

die dokter binne die volgende 10 minute daar sal wees, en inderdaad het die dokter toe binne 5 minute daarna ingestap. Dr Bougacha het die normale ondersoek gedoen en het dadelik gese daar is 'n obstruksie, hy het binne 2 minute presies gese wat fout is met my seun en het 'n sterk pynstiller ingespuit, hy het my seun presies verduidelik wat fout is en ook vir hom ges wat om tedoen as hy dit weer ervaar.Ek wil Lydenburg Hospitaal komplimenteer, van die hekwag tot by die dokter en personeel in ongevalle! Baie dankie, woorde het ons nie om julle te bedank vir uitstekende diens nie. Ek hoop dat 'n weldoener julle met verf sal borg want dan kan julle uitstekende diens 100% pas by die indruk wat die hospitaal gee, en dit is uitstekend!

Vrouens met 'n kappie op die kop is kaalvoet oor die Drakenberge. Hulle kinders en mans is deur die inboorlinge vermoor en Britse kolonialisasie het hul hande afgekap. Dis die feite van die Groot Trek. Mense sug gewoonlik as hulle met geskiedenis gebombardeer word. Tog het ek onlangs stil-stil 'n traan gestort toe ek weer van die Voortrekkers se ontberinge gelees het. Ek was maar 14 jaar oud toe ek die eerste keer F. A. Venter se reeks boeke oor die Groot Trek gelees het nl. Geknelde Land, Offer Land, Gelofte Land en Bedoelde Land. Verlede week het ek dit weer nader getrek. Hierdie keer, ouer en wyser, het dit 'n heeltemal ander uitwerking op my gehad. Seker ook omdat my emosies nie heeltemal onder beheer was nie. Hierdie boeke het my heeltemal ontsenu. Dat nog 'n kind dood is en van die trekkervrou wat oor die 20 keer deur 'n assegaai gesteek is en oorleef het. Met 'n knop in die keel het ek talle kere eers die boek laat sak totdat ek weer kalmer was. Ek het gehuil omdat hulle so swaar gekry het en dat die Britse-regering hulle nie gehelp het nie. Ons is met so baie dinge ontevrede. Mens vergeet gerieflik hoe anders dinge 170 jaar gelede was met die Groot Trek. Dit is eers toe ek gedwing word om rustig te raak en tyd het om te lees dat dit vir my duidelik geword het: Ons het 'n heerlike lewe. Dis nou as daar nie siektes is wat pla nie. Kyk net hoe ontsteld raak ons as die krag afgaan. Dadelik is ons in die donker oor hoe om sonder elektrisiteit oor die weg te kom. Die moderne tegnologie het ons afgod geword. Dit is nie donkiejare gelede wat mense sonder selfone oor die weg gekom het nie. Wat nog te s van televisie, e-pos, DVD's en elektriese komberse. Dit is seker so dat alles ten goede verbeter het en dat tegnologie en wetenskap die mens se lot verlig. Trekker-boeke sal ek beslis weer lees. Lank lewe tegnologie! Maar onthou om dit te onthou en nie te vergeet nie.

he Lydenburg Mashishing Business Chamber is going strong and has huge plans for the town. After their T

last meeting on 19 June, they gave feedback on several issues raised by members. ELECTRICITYAnton Crossley from Xstrata reported back on electricity in town: An audit was done on the 3 existing substations and it was submitted to Xstrata to set up a plan for disaster management. Over the past 15 years very little maintenance was done, let alone planning for the town's development. The system is not very safe and there is a lack of competent staff. The municipal installations in town are set to trip at a certain level. It is urgent to evaluate these trip settings, as they have been changed by officials to cope with overloads.Out of the 15 circuit breakers, three are antiquated oil models which need urgent replacement. Once all maintenance issues have been addressed, the electricity supply will still only be enough for the current demand. The hydro power station only helps in summer when there is enough water. There are plans to install two 20 MVA substations at the Roossenekal turn-off. Lydenburgers are encouraged to use electricity sparingly, particularly during peak hours e.g. use of washing machines and tumble dryers and baths at night causing geysers to heat up again. People from an engineering background are sitting in on interviews for new staff appointments. Thaba Chweu's Technical director did the interviews. Mr Crossley agreed to sit in on the final interviews, before appointments are made.The Chamber facilitated a meeting on the Rooidraai substation, which was completed two years ago. It was built for an additional 10 MVA

Business Chamber gives feedback with an immediate 5 MVA available from Eskom for the town grid. The Municipality has finally supplied guarantees to Eskom (R1,5m) and Xstrata will contribute to urgent maintenance. Xstrata has committed R35 000 to repair two lines and will provide labour for general maintenance on the line. Mr Anton Crossley will oversee this process. Mr Francois Vermeulen emphasised that all the money put up by the mines for Rooidraai was aimed at relieving pressure in the town. The fact that half of the power has been earmarked for a private developer, was never disclosed to the mines. To get Rooidraai's capacity up to 10 MVA, another transformer and switchgear will be needed, at a cost of R17m. Once all of this is done, the servitude on the land will be signed over to the Municipality. At that stage Thaba Chweu will have to pay a final amount of approximately R60 000 to Eskom. The Chamber will drive this process.In Pres Zuma's State of the Nation Address, the mining industry was earmarked as one of the important core growth points in the national budget.A Program for load shedding, if needed, has been published. Huge discussion the Chamber would like to thank Mr Leon de Jager for all the efforts in studying the budget in detail two meetings were held; roads are a problem and are being handled on an ongoing basis. Maintenance on Voortrekker Street done by Advance company will be coming back to fix up Kerk Street as well; Vehicles: Thaba Chweu is procuring vehicles for the plumbing and electrical departments. They are also looking at buying a refuse compactor truck.

Mpumalanga textbook tender was corruptsays the DA"DOCUMENTED information in our possession shows that EduSolutions has been awarded a multi-million rand tender for the supply and distribution of learner teacher supply materials, including textbooks in Mpumalanga," DA MPL Anthony Benadie said in a statement.Provincial education spokesman Jasper Zwane said the department would look into the DA's claims and "respond accordingly".Benadie said: "According to our information, it is clear that the supply chain division in the Mpumalanga education department received and captured an EduSolutions tender document, nearly a month before the bid committee awarded the contract."He said the party was "reliably informed" that EduSolutions would be paid a percentage of the funds saved by the department through discounts from book suppliers."This means that EduSolutions is pocketing millions of rands which the department could otherwise have used to employ more teachers or provide equipment to schools."Strangely, the Mpumalanga education department is also paying EduSolutions an additional 15 percent over and above the cost of 'non-discounted' items."The party would submit questions to Mpumalanga education MEC Regina Mhaule, asking her to explain all payments to EduSolutions.The company was also involved in the Limpopo textbook saga. Pupils at schools in the province had not received new textbooks since the start of the school year.

THE City Press reported on Sunday that former Vlakplaas commander Dirk Coetzee, who worked as a security consultant for EduSolutions, revealed how the company hid tens of thousands textbooks in its Gauteng warehouse four years ago.He claimed he personally introduced the company's founder, Shaun Battleman, to President Jacob Zuma, and that Battleman's business relationship with a former department director guaranteed him large government contracts. Die uitsigte van hier is asemrowend en slegs bestem vir n paar gelukkiges wat deel is van die geleentheid. Om hierdie beperkte geleentheid mee te maak gaan slegs R1000 per voertuig kos. THE Vespa (Italian for little wasp) was conceived and developed after the Second World War by aircraft builder Piaggio to provide transport for the masses. The rest is history, but the brand remains a characterful and exotic fixture in the motorcycle market to this day.Vespa Cape Town provided one of the latest models to take for a spin, and the weather offered up an ideal opportunity to buzz around the city. The gloss-black GTS pictured here was the steed of choice for this test. With emissions a global concern, most Vespas now utilise single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, four-stroke engines, although the base LX 150 is still air-cooled with a two-stroke engine. The GTS 300 has a four-valve head, o-h-c with electronic ignition and fuel injection. The bikes seating position is quite high, which seems incongruous with the Vespas sleek and compact appearance, but it engenders a feeling of safety and results in much better visibility than you would have on a conventional bike. Comfort levels are excellent, with lots of legroom and ample seat padding that will be an advantage on longer journeys.

The Amarok M is available as either a single or double-cab vehicle, with any of the VW range of petrol or diesel engines from 90-132kW, with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed auto transmission and permanent all-wheel drive. Rheinmetall says the Amarok M can tow up to 2770kg with a Nato-spec towbar and, even fully armed and armoured, is good for 177km/h - which is considerably better than the CJ2 could do! HYUNDAI has a come a long way from its perceived reputation of adequate budget cars to its current status of a modern premium brand. The South Korean auto giant was a fringe player in the late 1990s locally with its cheap products, adequate specification all wrapped up in timid styling.In the past five years, the automaker began its new model assault on South Africa with the debut of its i nomenclature with the launch of its i10, i20, i30 and ix35. Models which retained their traditional names have also done incredibly well such as the Sonata, Elantra and Accent. Not every model introduced since the automakers resurgence has been a success, as its outgoing i30 was a swing and a miss for the brand in SA. The hatchback was marginally larger and more powerful than the hugely successful i20 but carried a hefty price tag over its sibling. Globally the i30 was a hit with over 360 000 sales recorded since its launch in 2007.Hyundai went back to the drawing board and now launches a model that has been 48 months in the making the new i30. The new model is a complete redesign and bears only a passing resemblance to the outgoing model. The brands fluidic sculpture design language is realised in another striking model on the market which the automaker hopes will redefine the luxury compact hatchback market. The new i30 sports Hyundais hexagonal grille, assertive curves along its flanks and a sporty rear. The new model has attractive alloys - 16-inch for the 1.6 and a special 17-inch design for the 1.8. Even naysayers of the brand will have to concede that Hyundai has launched some fantastic-looking vehicles. The overall length (4.3m) and width (1.7m) has been increased, while the height has been reduced (1.4m). Despite its new design, I can't help but notice the i30 has some resemblance to Chevrolet's Sonic.The new i30 is available in two petrol options (1.6 and 1.8) with a choice of six-speed auto or manual transmission. The more powerful 1.8 is only available in manual guise. The 1.6 is capable of 95kW at 6300-rpm and has a torque peak of 157Nm at 4850rpm. The manual claims 6.4 litres/100km, the auto 6.8. The 1.8 is capable of 110kW at 6500rpm and 178Nm at 4700rpm and comes with a six-manual and has a claimed fuel consumption of 6.5 litres/100km.So what's the new i30 like to drive? In short enjoyable, though missing some much needed oomph. If youve driven the Elantra youll be right at home as the new model borrows the engines from its sibling and has similar handling characteristics. If youre going to copy somebody it might as well be yourself and the i30 does not disappoint out on the road. The vehicle is poised, nimble and pleasurable to drive. The i30 has three steering modes Normal (default), Comfort (lighter steering for parking) and Sport (Stiffens the steering wheel for taking on twisties). The i30 makes for a great city car and maintains a balanced ride through twists and bends. Not exactly grin-inducing stuff but the car's stability systems allow you to push the i30 knowing it will get you out of a bind should you be over-enthusiastic in cornering. Hyundai has no plans to introduce a dual-cluth gearbox or diesel variant in SA though it's currently testing a turbocharged engine. Hyundais fluidic design continues in its cabin. The interior is decked out in black gloss plastic materials, cloth and partial leather (1.8 only). You get the sense that Hyundais designers have worked just as hard on the exterior as they have inside as the interior is a pleasing space to be. The i30 is packed with a high level of standard kit including dual-zone aircon, parking radar (front and rear), power side mirrors, auto lock doors, cruise control, keyless entry and central locking. The 1.8 has alloy pedals.The new i30 takes on the likes of the Toyota Auris, Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, Opel Astra and its own Elantra sibling. The vehicle comes across as a higher-end Accent and is

marginally more expensive than the premium Elantra. If youre in the market for a large premium hatchback the i30 makes more sense than the fully specced Accent (R181 900). It will be tough to choose the newcomer over the Elantra (2012 SA Car of the Year winner). The i30 is marginally pricier than the Elantra derivatives, especially the top-of-the range variant of its sibling (Elantra 1.8 - R 244 900). Overall Hyundai has once again pushed the envelope in terms of vehicle design with another stunner added to its line-up. Will it be enough to knock VWs Golf off its perch? Hyundai certainly hopes so but is under no illusions about how brand-loyal SA buyers can be when it comes to German products and the Korean automaker has set itself a modest sales target of 250 i30s a month.Prices:Hyundai i30 1.6 R229 900. THE Association of Motorcycle Importers and Distributors is confident its upcoming show at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec, from August 24-26 will provide a boost to sales in an industry still recovering from the global economic downturn of 2008/9. AMiDs national director, Rhann Coetzee said: The AMiD show has been held at numerous venues over the years and in 2011 formed part of the Johannesburg motor show, but now it will benefit from three shows being co-hosted at Expo Centre at the same time.

The total includes non-AMiD brands such as Harley-Davidson and Vespa and the so-called grey imports, while AMiD members retailed 26 553 motorcycles, scooters and quads in 2011.Coetzee said that the industry is still far from the boom days of 2007 and 2008 when 50 593 and 54 720 motorcycles were sold respectively. Sales then plummeted to 30 484 in 2009.Although there is movement in the scooter, commuter and adventure classes, motorcycle sales are generally flat, Coetzee said. There have been some exciting product launches but exchange-rate fluctuations do influence sales negatively.Despite that, there still is a marginal growth in sales and we do believe the market is recuperating, but much slower than we had hoped it would. This must be seen in the light of the fact that motorcycles are generally leisure items and leisure spending was cut sharply after the global economic slowdown since 2009.He also said two-wheelers made commuting cheaper and quicker than a car or public transport and parking is made much easier.However, Coetzee said that the perceived danger of riding a motorcycle or scooter and obtaining a riders licence were barriers to entry into this market. AMiD was very happy with its latest discussions with the Gauteng Transport Department regarding licensing and progress was being made. South African house prices are set to deflate in real terms in the rest of 2012, according to the latest Absa House Price Index report.The report reveals that year-on-year (y/y) price growth in the South African housing market appears to be stabilising after a period of price declines.Writing in the report, Jacques du Toit, property analyst at Absa Home Loans says on a month-on-month basis prices have been on a gradual upward trend in the small and medium-sized segments over the past four to five months, impacting y/y price growth.The average nominal value of homes in each of the three middle-segment categories was as follows in June 2012:1. Economic indicators and the deterioration in the balance between demand and supply in the residential market, from the first to the second quarter of 2012, something that is not only driven by demand slowing but by availability of stock for sale as well.The report notes that in the second quarter, the average time of homes on the market prior to being sold rose from the previous quarter's 15 weeks and 6 days to 17 weeks and 4 days.Writing in the report, John Loos, FNB Home Loans property strategist says the percentage of properties sold at less than asking price was 87 percent, according to the survey, which was a slight improvement on the previous two quarters' 90 percent and 88 percent respectively.He notes that there is a still a very high percentage of sellers dropping their asking price, pointing to a widespread lack of pricing realism in the housing market.The percentage of first-time buyers was 20 percent down from 25 percent in the first quarter.Loos says after a steadily improving trend in the first time buyer percentage from the 2008 low, it has begun to appear as if this percentage has been flattening out and perhaps starting to decline a little.According to the survey, 20 percent of sellers were selling in order to downscale due to financial pressure, indicating significant pressure among households, says Loos.The percentage of sellers selling in order to upgrade declined mildly from 17 percent of total sellers in the first quarter to 15 percent in the second quarter.Loos points out that 30 percent of estate agents surveyed expect an increase in demand levels for residential property in the third quarter of 2012.Loos adds that estate agents still point towards a very significant level of financial pressure, which manifests itself in a still-high percentage of sellers downscaling due to financial pressure, and this should be a concern given that interest rates offer huge relief at their current multi-decade lows.

Francois Jordaan writes:The 2012 RFS Bike Econorun will again start from the RFS (Retirement Fund Solutions) HQ in Montana Pretoria and finish at friend Fick's happy Hotel Numbi in Hazyview in Mpumalanga.On Thursday afternoon 16 August the initial refuel will take place and the bikes placed in the overnight holding area, called Park Ferme at RFS HQ. There will be accommodation available nearby with transport provided, and a dinner on Thursday evening compliments of the RFS crew.On Friday morning 17 August they will provide a breakfast for all and then the first bike will start at 08h01 and the rest at one minute intervals.This year the route is planned to follow good tar roads to the north (quite a challenge I must say) and end some 650 km later at Hotel Numbi from where a 400 km circle route is planned for Saturday 19th on the best roads that ET can provide. As usual some will again refer to the event as the Econorace but rest assured we will obey all traffic rules while you will be kept very busy trying to figure out where the catch will be. The roads and route will be a test for riding skills and preserving fuel, while staying on route and not be caught with penalties for arriving late at controls.The overall winner will of course be the one

that uses the least fuel, but everybody else can win a class. As last year, all class winners, runner up and third placed competitors will be in contention for the cash awards, so anyone competing in the eleven different classes stand a chance to be a winner.The good news is that we will be able to keep the entry fee very close to last year despite the sharp increase in the fuel price as RFS decided to subsidise this increase !! Friend Fick has also come to the party and kept his increase in accommodation costs to the minimum. The costs should be around (bar tab excluded) R 2700 which includes the entry fee, all fuel after the initial fill up, all meals from Thursday evening up to Sunday morning, competition license from MSA, and the assurance that Doc Heine and the White toolbox brigade will look after you in the event of a little slip on the road.As always we will endeavor to keep costs to the minimum, but we must carry the costs of 40 (yes) officials, marshals etc, around twelve four wheel vehicles, the route survey and checks, accommodation for all the above and a small fee to the PMC to keep the club going, so we may enjoy all these privileges. This past weekend ladies working at Modikwa Platinum Mine and Runners of the Marathon club competed in the first Tubatse Chrome Eco Race.Ladies that competed were, Yvonne Makuwa, Assinah Moropane, Jeanette Setshabe, Martha Motlhabi and Jenny Cronje. Mandla Nxumalo, Ernest Mokoo, Surprise Makofane, Hermaans Mogale and Victor Maroge ran the 21km race, in this race Kego Nxumalo came in the second place for the ladies!The athletes enjoyed this race and thanked everybody for the support they received!
