Welcome new Merritt residents! Ok, it’s now official! several people have said to me recently: there’s a whole bunch of new people living in Merritt. I: rEaL-ly? They: Yes, and they’re from all over... back East, Toronto, Penticton, northern BC. I: real-LY? But I know, of course, there will also soon be new resi- dents from syria. so to everyone who is new — wel- come! We hope you like our town... Of course the surrounding landscape is some of the prettiest anywhere on Earth, but it won’t take long for the people of this valley to grow on you, too. as for getting to know the community, pick a group. Every-single-group-in-the- valley will welcome you with open arms, everyone’s always looking for new mem- bers, new volunteers, a new audience. But isn’t it interesting: our population doesn’t really fluxuate. If anything, it’s gone down over these past 20 years. My go-to guage is the grocery store. It’s measurable: every single time I’ve gone to the grocery store in my 25 years here, I’ve only ever known 50% the people in there. It’s a mystery… Merritt is a small town that doesn’t feel oppressive. There is all the wonderfulness of a small town — neighbourliness, sup- port, understanding — without the pry- ing, judgement, suffocation. That might just be me, but I don’t think so. Over the years, I’ve heard time & again from new- comers “Everyone’s so friendly”. and it’s true, they are, we are. so again, “Welcome, we look forward to meeting you”. —KL Bruce Vogt returns to the Nicola Valley Pianist and long-time friend of the NV arts community, Bruce Vogt, returns this weekend to delight every manner of au- dience with performances on both satur- day & sunday at the Civic Centre. Bruce Vogt initiated the Piano Fund in 1981, by donating the proceeds from a concert he performed for the arts Coun- cil on a derelict piano at Merritt second- ary school. Others, including piano teacher, andrea rogers and her husband, Norm, contributed as well, and the com- munity’s Piano Fund was born. In 1991, a Grand Piano Fundraising Committee arose, and through fundraising concerts performed by both Bruce Vogt and Valdy, generous private donations, and a match- ing grant from the Vancouver Foundation, the Community’s fabulous C7F Grand Piano was purchased. Bruce Vogt assisted on that Committee, and he then performed a Black & White Gala in 1992 to welcome the piano. he has performed several fundraisers for the arts Council since, and now returns to perform for the NVCaC’s 35th anniversary, the 25th anniversary of the Grand Piano, and Canada’s 150th! On saturday, Bruce will improvise on the grand piano to Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton black & white silent films for A Grand Affair - an Evening in Black & White…with a Splash of Red, 7pm in the auditorium of the Civic Centre. a fundraiser organized by a fun group of friends of the arts Council, the evening will be a light-hearted jaunt with something to amuse everyone: tapas and treats by Brambles, special drinks, scotch tast- ing, a lounge area, a silent auction, and plenty of time to mix and mingle. Tickets are $50, and you receive a $30 Charitable Donation receipt. Buy your tickets online at www.nicolavalleyartscouncil.com or at Black’s Pharmacy. Bruce will also perform a Matinee Concert at 2 pm on sunday, at the Civic Centre, where he will delight the audience with selections from both Liszt and Beethoven. ad- mission by donation with cake and tea/coffee served to celebrate the piano’s 25th and the arts Council’s 35th anniversaries! In addition to his career as a piano soloist, cham- ber musician and recording artist, Bruce Vogt is also Professor at the university of Vic- toria. Because he sees teaching and working with young pianists and with piano teachers as an important commitment, he will lead a workshop for children ages 6 - 12 years on saturday, Oct. 21st at 10am at the Civic Centre, designed to inspire music learning, piano practice and skills - $10 per person/family $30.
