LITURGICAL MINISTERSPlease sign up to help at the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses. There are still many spots still open for Altar Servers, Lectors, EMHC, and MCs. Christmas Eve Mass times: 4 PM in the Church, 4 PM in the School MPR, 6:30 PM in the Church, and 10 PM in the Church. Christmas Day times are 8:45 and 10:45 AM.

If you are having trouble signing up through Ministry Pro for one of these Masses, it might be because you don't have "special services" as one of your Mass preferences. You can either add that to your profile, or email Terri, [email protected] and she can put you on the schedule.

ART FOR ONE AUCTIONStill looking for that perfect gift? Bring the beauty of Christian art home for yourself or a loved one with our “ART for ONE” icon auction. Beginning next week, we’ll be auctioning off 3 original icons by Claude Al-Absi, the talented iconographer who created our beautiful adoration chapel icons and sanctuary stations of the cross.

The icons will be displayed at various times during the weekend of December 11 and 12, with online bidding opening December 12. The auction closes on December 19, right after the Live Nativity event so be sure to get your bids in.

All proceeds from the auction will directly support the ONE Campaign loan, so thank you for your generosity.

CATHOLIC CONVERSATIONS - INFANCY NARRATIVESYou are invited to join us on December 12 at Old Bag of Nails, (upper room/2nd floor) 4065 Main St, Hilliard, OH from 6 PM - 8 PM as Fr Jeff Rimelspach discusses the Infancy Narratives. The infancy narratives in Matthew and Luke contain some of the most cherished passages in all of Scripture. These stories have influenced everything from sacred art to modern pop culture, inspiring the imagination of all who read them. What we might not expect, however, is that the infancy narratives are not merely about the baby Jesus. Please join us for this Advent discussion! Registration is recommended for seating. CONFIRMATION WEEKEND RETREAT REFLECTIONSOn Friday, November 19 - Sunday, November 21, we had 34 students participate in the Confirmation Weekend Retreat at Damascus Catholic Mission Campus. The weekend included sessions on “Abundant Life”, “The Jesus Question”, “Created for Love”, “Receive New Life” and “Living the ‘I Do’”. It also included skits, small group sharing, prayer labs, activities, Adoration and culminated with a closing Mass on Sunday that families were invited to attend. We hope students continue to encounter Christ in prayer, Sacrament, and community as they prepare to receive their Confirmation. Here are a few reflections from those who attended:• “I loved this retreat; I had the best missionary ever. The others were the best and Adoration really helped me. I’ve never felt closer to God and Jesus than I have since this retreat. I feel really confident in myself, Confirmation and being Catholic. I think that everyone should go to this camp at least once in their life and this retreat is something I would recommend for really anyone, even if they don’t want to be Confirmed. I believe this will really change everyone for the best.” ~ Rachael• “Figuring out my confirmation name at the top of the VPP (Vertical Play Pen) was my favorite part.”• “I learned that Confirmation is basically my promise to God that I will live my life as a Catholic and I will always follow God.” ~ Luke• “This weekend was D’s Confirmation retreat at Damascus campus, home of the Catholic Youth Summer Camp. Though he was quite apprehensive about sleeping somewhere new, he bravely walked into a weekend of familiar and new faces, awesome amenities, high-rush outdoor adventures, and fire-filled discussion of our Faith to guide and inspire him on his way to Confirmation. Picking him up today was a beautiful treat with Mass with all the campers truly joyous and enthusiastic about why they were there. He did it! He liked it! Come Holy Spirit!”~ Teresa (mother of a Confirmation student)

A MESSAGE FROM JACOB DORAN

ST BRENDAN FINANCIAL DASHBOARDThis week’s dashboard report focuses on attendance. Our attendance typically varies throughout the year, but this year’s pattern was noticeably different due to COVID-19. As expected, we experienced lower in-person Mass attendance during the fall of 2020 and spring of 2021 due to the pandemic; statistics for livestream viewing during this time were not archived and are now unavailable. With the dispensation for the Sunday obligation being lifted in early summer, we saw an increase in in-person Mass attendance over the summer (a time when Mass attendance typically falls due to summer travel). However, in-person attendance began to level off and even decline as of September, 2021.

The variability in Mass attendance underscores St Brendan’s critical reliance upon electronic giving, which gives us a more predictable offertory stream. As we head into the colder, snowier winter months, please consider setting up electronic recurring giving to help us offset the variation in offertory due to weather conditions. Simply go to tinyurl.com/stbrendangiving to set up your secure electronic giving. Thank you for your generosity!

The week before Thanksgiving I was blessed to attend the weekend Confirmation retreat at Damascus with some of our eighth-grade students from Faith Formation and the school. During this retreat, the students and chaperones were given time in small groups to learn and practice prayer. We experienced two types of prayer over the weekend: lectio divina (divine reading) and imaginative prayer.

Lectio divina is done in five steps. The first step is to read. In this step, we read from Scripture, looking for words or phrases that seem to stick out to us. At the retreat I was given the passage from the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus asks His apostles, “Who do you say that I am?” St Peter responds that Jesus

is the Christ. Jesus then replies to Peter, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.” The phrase “son of Jonah” seemed important to me during my prayer. In the second step, meditate, I considered the meaning of son as an inheritor. I also thought about the prophet Jonah of the Old Testament, and how while he was a prophet chosen to speak the word of God, Jonah still acted out of pride, fear, and anger. During the third step, prayer, I asked God what was important about this phrase and these thoughts. It was put into my heart and mind that I very well know that I can struggle with these same vices as the prophet Jonah, but that it does not diminish my call to love and serve others according to Christ’s call. Simon Peter was a literal son of his father, Jonah. I have inherited the same mistakes as the prophet Jonah, but, like Peter, I am not disqualified from hearing the voice of the Father. In the fourth step, contemplation, I rested with this response and then started to plan out my fifth step, action. Being more aware of my vices and sins, I will act against them by bringing them to confession and taking responsibility by apologizing when I mess up.

Lectio divina is a traditional Catholic prayer method that helps us to hear God’s voice by beginning with His Living Word in the Scriptures. I encourage you to take time through the Advent season to pray lectio divina with the stories of Christ’s birth. I pray that these five steps will help you to hear the Father’s voice in your own heart and mind.
