The Jesus Who Laid Down

by Eddie Lawrence

1. He Laid Down in a Manger

This story tells us He came as a man and grew up as a man from

infancy.

Luke 2:16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and

the Babe lying in a manger.

- He was fully human, a babe.

- He attracted angels, wise men, and a star.

2. He Laid Down in a Boat

This story shows us his authority as Lord who could control wind and

wave.

Mark 4: 35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 And

Page 5: 12 Christmas Sermon Outlinessermonseedbed.com/.../12/12-Christmas-Sermon...1.pdf · 12/12/2013  · Christmas in the Garden of Eden Other Sermon Outlines by Eddie Bio of Eddie Lawrence

5

they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

- He was fully human, he tired.

- He moved in authority to calm the sea.

3. He Laid Down in a Garden

This story shows us his place as mediator and intercessor and his

willful obedience to the Divine purpose.

Matthew 26: 36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”

39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”

40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? 41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

- He was fully human, he agonized.

- He moved in intercession.

4. He Laid Down in a Tomb

This story shows us the finality of his death as our sin bearer who

bore the ultimate penalty of sin which death with all its separating

powers.

John 19: 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of

linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the

place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a

new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So there they laid Jesus,

because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

-His burial signifies his death. His death is an important and necessary

element of the Gospel.

- He was fully human, he died.

- He bore the sins of the world.

-This last lying down preceded the great raising up. The resurrection of

Jesus.

The Greatest Gift Giver

by Eddie Lawrence

Reflect with me about some of the wonderful gifts that Father God has

freely given us as His children:

1. The Gift of His Son

John 3: 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten

Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have

everlasting life.

2. The Gift of Eternal Life

Romans 6: 23 For the wages of sinis death, but the gift of God is eternal

life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

3. The Gift of Saving Grace

Ephesians 2: 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that

not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should

boast.

4. The Gift of the Holy Spirit

Acts 2: 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be

baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you

shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and

to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our

God will call.”

5. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2 You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I make

known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

Wise Ways of Wise Men

by Eddie Lawrence

The group of wise men we read about that visited Jesus when he was a

child give should aspire us to have a hunger to worship Jesus as they

did. Let’s learn from their ways. First let’s read the Scripture narrative.

Text: Matthew 2: Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

5 So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet:

6 ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.’”

7 Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.”

9 When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced

with exceedingly great joy. 11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

12 Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.

1. They Were Seekers

Matthew 2: Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

2. They Were Listeners

Matthew 2: 5 So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet:

What Kind of Story is Christmas?

by Eddie Lawrence

1. Its a Good News Story

Luke 2: Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

2. Its a Supernatural Story

-Luke 1:11ff, The Angel Gabriel appearing to Zacharias

-The loss and restoration of the voice of Zacharias

-Conception of Elizabeth who was beyond years with baby John the

Baptist.

-Luke 2:26-38, The miraculous conception of the virgin Mary.

-The Angels appearing to the Shepherds

-The angel in a dream given to Joseph

-The wise men led by the star.

14

3. Its a Relevant Story

Luke 2: 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I

bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For

there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ

the Lord.

-Notice this was good news for all people. This means us too!

-Savior -- To save us from sin. We are sinners who need a Savior. It is

relevant for all people today!

-Christ – this is the one who was to come sent from God to redeem us.

He is our Messiah too!

-Lord – He is the Lord so He is our Lord. The story is as relevant to us

today as it was for the people in the first Christmas story.

A Snake, A Seed, and A Savior by Eddie Lawrence

Have you ever thought about the fact that very early in the Book of

Genesis we find the foreshadowings of the Christmas story?

Text: Genesis 3: 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

12 Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

13 And the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 So the LORD God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

Notice first of all that there was…

Page 16: 12 Christmas Sermon Outlinessermonseedbed.com/.../12/12-Christmas-Sermon...1.pdf · 12/12/2013  · Christmas in the Garden of Eden Other Sermon Outlines by Eddie Bio of Eddie Lawrence

16

1. A Perverse Voice

- The serpent who spoke to deceive mankind and lead them into sin.

Genesis 3: 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked?

2. A Prophetic Word

- In speaking to the serpent, God the Father prophesied the coming of

the Christ child.

Genesis 3: 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent:

Page 17: 12 Christmas Sermon Outlinessermonseedbed.com/.../12/12-Christmas-Sermon...1.pdf · 12/12/2013  · Christmas in the Garden of Eden Other Sermon Outlines by Eddie Bio of Eddie Lawrence

17

“Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

3. A Perpetual Conflict

-Father told the serpent that there would enmity between the serpent

and the seed of the woman. There has been a demonic attack against

women against the children that are grown and birth through her

womb.

-This enmity reached its greatest peak against THE SEED, the Christ

child and now continues against those who are His.

Genesis 3: 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed;

18

He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.” 3. A Pregnant Girl

-Father told the serpent that a woman would bring the victorious seed.

Genesis 3: 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

4. A Powerful Savior

-The One who would be born of woman that would be bruised but who

would crush Satan.

Genesis 3:14 So the LORD God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity

The Christmas Zoo

by Eddie Lawrence

Imagine with me the animals that may have been present in the shed

where baby Jesus was laid in a manger. Now let’s think about the ways

those animals are sometimes presented in the biblical stories. And let’s

think of how they relate to Christ and his redemptive story.

1. The Rooster

Mark 14: 71 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!”

72 A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.

-This speaks of his being denied by Peter and his dying to deliver us

from the pain that our own denial and betrayal has caused and the

denial and betrayal we all have endured.

-It also speaks to the times when we are brought face to face with our

failures and need to make the choice that Peter did and weep in

repentance.

2. The Lamb

John 1: 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said,

“Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

-This speaks of his sacrificial offering of his own life for the sins of the

world. Jesus is the lamb of God slain from the foundation of the world.

Page 24: 12 Christmas Sermon Outlinessermonseedbed.com/.../12/12-Christmas-Sermon...1.pdf · 12/12/2013  · Christmas in the Garden of Eden Other Sermon Outlines by Eddie Bio of Eddie Lawrence

24

3. The Donkey

Matthew 21: Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. 3 And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.”

4 All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:

5 “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

6 So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. 8 And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:

“Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Hosanna in the highest!”

-This is the animal he rode when he was hailed as King. It speaks to his

kingship and his kingdom authority. Is he the king of your life? Are you

allowing him to rule and reign in your life? Are you involved in kingdom

living? We serve a king and his name is Jesus!

4. The Goat

Leviticus 16: 20 “And when he has made an end of atoning for the

Holy Place, the tabernacle of meeting, and the altar, he shall bring the

live goat. 21 Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat,

confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their

transgressions, concerning all their sins, putting them on the head of

the goat, and shall send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a

suitable man. 22 The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to an

uninhabited land; and he shall release the goat in the wilderness.

-He became our scapegoat bearing our sin away outside the camp. John

1:29 refers to Jesus taking our sins away as well. He bore the sin and

the shame that should be carried by us. What a Savior!

5. The Bull

Hebrews 10: For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins.3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

5 Therefore, when He came into the world, He said:

“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me. 6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin

26

You had no pleasure. 7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come— In the volume of the book it is written of Me— To do Your will, O God.’”

8 Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), 9 then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

-His blood has done for us what the blood of bulls and goats could

never do. His offering perfects us forever. His work is a finished work

not to be repeated.

Conclusion: We have seen how these animals bring glory to some

aspect of Jesus. Yes, these lowly creatures in their own give him praise.

Now the question is, “Does your life give him praise?”

A Mother, A Moment, and A Miracle

by Eddie Lawrence

Text: Luke 2: 26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”

29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”

35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”

38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Some Scandalously Good News

by Eddie Lawrence

Text: Matthew 1: 8 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”

22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife,25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.

The Crossroads of History

by Eddie Lawrence

Text: Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, bornof a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

1. The Fullness of Time

Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, bornof a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

-God chooses the time to move and work out His plans then and now. We need to learn the power of waiting and the fruit of following God instead of trying to direct God.

2. The Womb of a Woman

-God chooses who He will use to move and work out His plans then and now and they are the willing ones. Mary said be it done to me according to your word. We should say the same when God moves on us to act in history.

3. The Weight of the Law

Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

-There is the power of law that wars against us informing us that we

can never measure up and without help we cannot.

-This drives us to our need of a Savior and introduces us to a live as

sons through Christ.

4. The Desire of a Father

-God has always had a Father’s heart. He has always had our best interest at heart. He has always longed for us to be restored to the intimacy He had in the Garden with His Son Adam before the Fall which in reality was a reflection of the intimacy He has enjoyed eternally in the communion of the Godhead between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

5. The Cry for a Papa

-There is the cry from our heart to know “Father.” To be held in “Daddy’s” arms. This is the primal desire and it is experienced when through the new birth. God sends forth His Spirit into our lives. Papa loves us and this is one of the greatest foundational truths we can ever come to know.

-The moment He placed the Divine seed inside of Mary things were set in motion in the crossroads of history for Him to place His Spirit inside of us. Praise His name!

Christmas in the Garden of Eden

by Eddie Lawrence

Text: Genesis 3: 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

Notice that there was…..

1. A Word

God pronounced the future prophetically.

Genesis 3: 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed;

35

He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

2. A War God declared that conflict would exist between Satan and humanity.

3. A Woman God would use woman to bring forth a seed that would bring down the very one that brought her down.

Genesis 3: 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust

All the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

4. A Warrior

From the womb of woman would come a child who would become a

warrior against the enemy of mankind.

5. A Win

The warrior from woman’s womb would be wounded but would

conquer the very headquarters of demonic power.

Genesis 3: 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent:

Page 37: 12 Christmas Sermon Outlinessermonseedbed.com/.../12/12-Christmas-Sermon...1.pdf · 12/12/2013  · Christmas in the Garden of Eden Other Sermon Outlines by Eddie Bio of Eddie Lawrence

Conclusion: Jesus entered the world as a baby, but he left it as a

conquering Savior and he will return to enforce his victory and usher in

eternity.

We now have victory in his victory. We are winners because he

overcame death, hell, and the grave to save us. For this, we should fall

before him in worship and thanksgiving.
