Bleeding gums and pregnancyDid you know… Many pregnant women experience increased bleeding from their gums, due to changes in their hormonal balance. e body reacts to plaque and bacteria more severely. e gums can get swollen, red, and bleed, a reversible condition called Gingivitis. Some women stop brushing and ossing because they worry it will make things worse. It is actually more important to brush and oss during this time because cleaning away plaque and bacteria will help the gums return to health, and can prevent a more serious disease called periodontitis from developing. For more information check out our website or call 605-996-9944 to make an appointment with Dr. Farnham or Dr. Weber.

Show off your Mitchell!

The Mitchell Convention & Visitors Bureau is exhibiting at the National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic, February 20-22, 2015 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, IA. Iowa boasts 104 local Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever Chapters with over 19,000 members. This year, National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic is being held in conjunction with the Iowa State High School Wrestling Tournament, also held at the Iowa Events Center. They are looking to see a significant boost to the already great attendance for the sports show, which brought over 70,000 to Des Moines! Mitchell’s presence at this show helps position Mitchell as the premier location for pheasant hunting. We want to ensure Mitchell is at the top of the list when it comes to hunters choosing their destination! To partner contact Katie at [email protected] or 996.6223.

The Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce Regional Marketing Committee has funding available to foster and encourage events that promote tourism activities which utilize the retail and hospitality services within the City of Mitchell. The committee is funded by an allocation of the entertainment tax revenues. The funds are administered by the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce Regional Marketing Committee. Events may be cultural, ethnic, historic, educational or recreational or a combination thereof. Events should have strong appeal to a large part of our community and potential visitors. The resulting economic and non-economic benefits of this program are intended to promote the general welfare of the City residents.

Consideration for funding will be made to events that are unique to the area or something that can be identified with the Mitchell area. They will have at their heart the “signature” of Mitchell and the Mitchell area and when visitors think of the event, they think of Mitchell. The event will encourage and solicit attendance from the general public. Funding will be given to events that the Committee believes will encourage overnight stays in the community by out-of-town visitors.

Priority will be given to events held during the “off-peak” or shoulder seasons, bringing visitors in during times they normally do not visit. “Off -peak” are the months of November, December, January and February. Shoulder seasons are defined as March, April, September and October.

Events receiving the funds will be required to adequately report evaluations of impact, such as lodging room-nights or dollars spent.

A copy of the funding policy, criteria for funding, criteria for use of funds, and application may be downloaded at www.mitchellchamber.com. You can also pick up a copy from Katie Knutson at the Chamber of Commerce at 601 N. Main Street.

The fourth annual Tourism Excellence Award was presented to the Mitchell Pheasant Country Chapter of Pheasants Forever at the Annual Recognition Banquet on January 23. This group has taken their non-profit organization to an entirely different level. Not only do they raise thousands of dollars for local habitat projects and youth events every year, they bring in hundreds of visitors from across the United States to their big event each October.

The chapter was started in 1985 by several Mitchell business owners who wanted to increase the pheasant population in order to keep hunters coming to the Mitchell area. The goal has remained the same today as each year they raise thousands of dollars to help with habitat, hunting, and youth programs by holding an annual banquet at the World’s Only Corn Palace, the evening before Opening Day of Pheasant Season.

The local committee is made up of over 25 volunteers, 10 board members and Dave Allen, the chapter president for the past 9 years. Notable achievements include having over 300 landowners participate in the chapter’s habitat program; they have planted over 3,000 acres of food plots, have contributed over $600,000 in wildlife plots and shelterbelt tree programs, and distributed over 10,000 free bags of food plot seed. The chapter has given over 500 Pheasants Forever youth memberships to area kids, provided scholarships to post-secondary students, hosted many youth trap shoots and youth hunts, and participate in community events including the Rodeo Chili Cook-Off, Memorial Day BBQ Challenge and the DWU Homecoming Parade.

Their years of hard work have achieved spectacular results in 2014. First, the chapter completed a $25,000 picnic shelter project at Lake Mitchell as part of the ‘No Child Left Indoors’ initiative through Pheasants Forever nationally; and as a thank you to our community for supporting the organization over the past 29 years. The shelter, located just to the east of the Sportsman’s Club, is open to the public and encourages families to take advantage of the outdoors.

Additionally, the chapter expects to remain at the top spot, for the third year in a row, as the largest membership chapter in all of the US and Canada. This year over 650 people packed into the Corn Palace for their annual banquet on Friday, October 17th. The sold out crowd brought in non-resident hunters

from over 30 different states.

Lastly, their leadership and dedication to our community was summed up in the NBC Sports premiere of “Opening Day”. The hour long show premiered on Wednesday, November 21st and showcased pheasant hunting season in South Dakota, primarily in and around Mitchell. The show was narrated by South Dakota’s own, Tom Brokaw, and chapter president, Dave Allen, was the ring-leader in bringing this national show to Mitchell.

This group has inspired and educated countless other service clubs and community organizations in Mitchell, and is considered one of the largest and most influential non-profit organizations within our community. With their strong committee and leadership team, they plan to continue doing bigger and better things for pheasant habitat, hunting, and our youth during their 30th year in 2015.

Congratulations to the Pheasant Country Chapter of Pheasants Forever on receiving the 2014 Mitchell Convention and Visitors Bureau Tourism Excellence award, and best of luck on your 30th year. We know they will do great things for pheasant habitat and our community! Jen Johnston, vice chairman of the CVB Advisory Board, presented the Pheasants Country Chapter with the honor. Last year’s winner was the Mitchell Skating and Hockey Association’s Twice the Ice committee.

Chamber Volunteer of the Year

Schoenfelder Construction has been flourishing in the Mitchell community for over 40 years. It all started in 1974 when Norman Schoenfelder, along with only one other employee, began hauling dirt, demolishing buildings, and helped with other construction site preparation. Over the years, the quality of their labor and expertise became known around the community, and today they operate within a 70 mile radius, preparing sites for some of the most popular projects.

The Sherman Center at DWU, the McGovern Library, the new wellness center at DWU, and elementary schools are just a few of the sites that Schoenfelder Construction has worked on over the years. Of course, with growing

demands in work comes the need for top-quality, experienced employees who have pride in their work and what they do. The Schoenfelder family believes they have a strong, integrity-filled crew who take care of their customers and make sure the job is done right. In 41 years, the company has grown from 1 employee to 12, including family members of the second and third generation.

Brad and Mark – of the second generation – as well as Riley and Austin – of the third generation – have all joined Norman in the business he created all those years ago. Schoenfelder Construction has grown to be one of the largest businesses in the area, but they still operate with the same work ethic and passion as the day the business first began. In addition, the Schoenfelder family has played an active role in the Mitchell community over the years, involving their time with the Corn Place Stampede Rodeo, charitable organizations, and offering their services when needed.

The PFBA, along with award sponsor CorTrust Bank, is proud to honor with Schoenfelder family of Schoenfelder Construction with the 2015 Mitchell Area Excellence in Family Business Award.

Family Business of the Year Award goes to…

The Community Service Award is a tribute to the fact that individuals can make a difference. It is an award that recognizes that there are few things that are as valuable to the future of a community as people volunteering their time, talents and resources.

For nearly 60 years, the Chamber of Commerce has presented the Community Service Award for significant contributions and service to the Mitchell Community. It is, quite simply said, the highest recognition that the Chamber of Commerce can bestow for a life committed to making a difference. The past Community Service Award winners exemplify the variety of ways of contributing to our community. Previous winners represent volunteerism, philanthropy, leadership and public service. Each winner brings different gifts, talents and abilities making a difference in the lives of our people and our community.

Ever mindful of our young leaders, the Chamber knows that it is important that we tell the next generation that each person counts and that it is individuals and their personal efforts and service that have built the past success and will insure the future dreams of Mitchell, South Dakota.

This year’s Community Service recognition

winner believes that what is good for Mitchell is good for our individual businesses. That begins with things as simple as swinging a paint brush for Habitat for Humanity’s Brush with Kindness projects, helping with community food drives and lending a hand when asked.

Involvement in community organizations such as Rotary and service on volunteer boards for LifeQuest and the Abbott House plus the Mitchell Area Charitable Foundation lead to this year’s recipient heading several capital campaigns, and service as the chair of our local United Way fund-raising campaign.

They have evidenced leadership on the board for Avera Queen of Peace and twice on the Mitchell Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and twice on the Mitchell Area Development Corporation Board—having served as chair for both of these groups.

Lest you think this year’s winner is all work and no play, interests include reading, running, hunting, fishing, golfing, knitting and life at the lake. Yes, we are recognizing a real reveler in renaissance!

The voice of and community face for Dakota Wesleyan University; Business Banking Manager and recently retired Community Banking President for Wells Fargo—this year’s Community Service Award goes to a dynamic duo, Pat and Lori Essig. They came to Mitchell 20 years ago and we haven’t been the same since! With their daughters, Maddie and Olivia, they have been active within their church and schools—Showchoir parenting being one of their more recent past involvements. But, the lists could go on and on.

Suffice it to say, they have been good for Mitchell! Congratulation Pat and Lori Essig.

Mitchell Named an ICF Top 7 CommunityFor three years, the Intelligent

Community Forum has named Mitchell a Smart21 Community. On January 22, Mitchell was named a Top 7 Intelligent Community. This distinction signifies that Mitchell not only has exceptional broadband access, options, and usage; but that the community has also been successful in leveraging that access for successful social and economic development.

This is no small accomplishment. Mitchell beat out hundreds of community applicants to make the Smart 21; and was chosen among the top third of even those finalists.

The Top 7 Communities are selected based on five Intelligent Community Indicators: Broadband Access, Knowledge Workforce, Innovation, Digital Inclusion, and Advocacy. These final

communities are selected from nearly 400 submissions to the annual awards program of the ICF.

What marks the difference between Smart 21 Communities and Top 7 Intelligent Communities? According to a January 19 blog post by ICF Founder Robert Bell, “While Smart City technologies make cities work better, Intelligent Community strategies create better cities, where people and organizations thrive and prosper in the global broadband economy.” This takes more than just broadband and IT infrastructure; it requires developing a knowledge workforce, honing and nurturing an innovative ecosystem, expanding access to necessary skills and technology, and engaging citizens in the process.

Mitchell has excelled in all of these measures, particularly through the educational institutions – public and private, primary and higher education. Additionally, the ICF praised Mitchell’s success in combating population decline, implementing long-range community development planning, and diversifying the economic base to include telecommunications development on top of manufacturing and agriculture. Further, Mitchell was specifically lauded for demonstrating “the hope that broadband and new ideas in planning offer to rural communities and towns.”

In June, the 2015 Intelligent Community of the Year will be announced in Toronto, Canada, the reigning 2014 top city. Congratulations, Mitchell!

With the modern economy inextricable from technology, the ICF focuses heavily on areas with significant investments in technology across various community sectors. With three private broadband providers (plus a fourth option for business-to-business needs), Mitchell stands out from communities around the globe as having an uncommon degree of options and quality for broadband connectivity.

Each year, the ICF names 21 “Smart Cities” from around the globe; and for the last three years, Mitchell has been one.
