DEAR FRIEND,Usually, our Annual Report recaps the highlights of the previous year at Boys Town, providing inspiration and information to our loyal donors like you and letting them know how their generous support has helped us change the lives of children and families across the country.

But as we all know, the last few months have been anything but usual. The coronavirus pandemic has changed our way of life, creating hardships and sacrifices for everyone, especially the children and families that depend on our compassionate, effective care.

As we face these extraordinary and unprecedented challenges, we at Boys Town want you to know we are tremendously grateful for your con-tinued support. In times like these, children and families that are struggling with their own personal challenges feel even more pressure, anxiety and frustration. As their needs increase, the life-changing services you make possible are even more crucial to their well-being.

We know how deeply you care for the boys and girls who find hope while in our care and for the families in crisis that turn to us so they can stay together and grow stronger. In this Annual Report, you will find some of their inspi-rational stories of redemption. You’ll also learn about the special ways our donors and staff members supported those in our care and the precaution-ary measures we’ve taken to protect our kids and families and keep them safe during this difficult time.

But even with all these precautions (and others that may be necessary in the weeks and months ahead), we remain committed to our mission and continue our day-to-day operations so those in greatest need can benefit from the life-changing care and resources we provide. We are able to do that because of you.

Many challenges still lie ahead. We all must pull together to meet and over-come them. That’s why your continued support and prayers for Boys Town and its mission are so crucial. I truly believe that the spirit of compassion and generosity that moves you to help our children and families is what will get us through these trying times.

Words cannot fully express how much you mean to our organization and to those who turn to us in times of personal crisis.

I want you to know that everyone at Boys Town is praying for the safety, good health and well-being of you and your family. We are in this together and we will get through this together.

God’s Blessings,

Father Steven E. Boes President and National Executive Director, Boys Town

“MY ROOMMATE WAS 17 AND I WAS 8 YEARS OLD AND HE WAS FROM NEW JERSEY AND HE HAD A REGGIE JACKSON ROOKIE CARD THAT SAT UP ON HIS BULLETIN BOARD.

66

HELP ALONG

THE WAY And every day when he got up in the morning before he left for school he’d touch it. And being an 8 year old –and he was a great athlete – and I looked up to him. I wanted to do everything he did. So, I touched that Reggie Jackson card. Oh, that was the wrong thing to do. So, what I found out was that Reggie Jackson card was the last thing his father gave him before he walked out of his life. His senior year at Christmas after everybody got their gifts, I get a box from him and in there was a Reggie Jackson card. My roommate told me, ‘This got me through, and this will get you through too,’ and he left it for me. I still have that card.”

Little Lincoln Johnston’s journey to Omaha might have been long, but his road to recovery looks to be on track thanks to the doctors and staff at Boys Town National Research Hospital®.Kylee Johnston and her husband started to notice ridges on Lincoln’s head at 1 year old. Lincoln’s pediatrician assured his parents the ridges were normal, and kids can grow out of it. However, when they returned for Lincoln’s 18-month checkup, the pediatrician said it was time to look to a specialist.

Lincoln was diagnosed with sagittal craniosynostosis. This condition causes pressure on the brain and prevents it from growing. Surgery can reduce the pressure and allow for proper brain development.

With the Johnston family being from Collinsville, Oklahoma, they had never heard of Boys Town Hospital, but that all changed.

Kylee turned to her craniosynostosis group on Facebook for recommendations and heard great feedback about Dr. Jason Miller, craniofacial surgeon, and Dr. Linden Fornoff , pediatric neurosurgeon, at Boys Town Hospital, and the family decided to make the drive to Omaha.

In November of 2019, the Johnstons came to Omaha and decided surgery was Lincoln’s best option. Dr. Miller and Dr. Fornoff removed a small strip of Lincoln’s skull allowing his brain to expand and grow normally.

The Johnstons said they couldn’t have been more pleased with their experience at Boys Town Hospital.

“The whole hospital experience was great,” Kylee said. “Lincoln had been hospitalized before, but we have never seen the doctors as much as we did here. I felt he was a priority. From the first appointment, to the diagnosis, to the surgery, the care here was just phenomenal, and I haven’t seen that care at another hospital.”

For Lincoln and the Johnston family, the journey to Omaha was a life-changer.

For Dr. Christina Bodurow, establishing an education fund at Boys Town in tribute to her father’s 100th birthday was the perfect way to continue his legacy of giving to Father Flanagan’s home.

George R. BodurowJanuary 29, 1921 – January 7, 1995

That’s why she and her son, George (George’s grandson), have established the George R. Bodurow Education Fund.

George R. Bodurow led a life dedi-cated to the idea that education is a very important path to success for all people. He shared his passion for edu-

cation with everyone and continuously encouraged everyone to better themselves through educational opportunities. At the age of 16, he saw the movie Boys Town in his home country of Bulgaria and began sending donations to Father Flanagan. He truly believed that every child should have a chance to reach their greatest poten-tial, and he saw that same commitment at Boys Town.

George’s daughter said he passed his feelings about the movie and Boys Town down to her over the years.

“Many of the themes of the 1936 Spencer Tracy Boys Town movie resonated with my father,” she said. “The notion that ‘There is no such thing as a bad boy’ was a concept that his family heritage also instilled in him, and that he carried with him all

his life. He felt with the right environment and opportunities to better themselves, all children could find a path to a productive and successful life.”

Dr. Bodurow said that was what made Boys Town so important to her father.

“It was an institution that invested in providing disadvantaged children a path to a better life,” she said. “His personal philosophy was to always be looking out for others, both family and friends. The Boys Town slogan ‘He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother’ was emblematic of how he lived his life. For him, ‘my brother’ pertained to all people with whom he interacted, and the philosophy that every human can reach out to support and help any other person who might be in need.”

It was those strong feelings that inspired her to continue what he started when he made regular donations to Boys Town.

“In providing this endowment, we are honoring my father’s core values and life accomplishments,” Dr. Bodurow said. “For my Dad, Boys Town was an example of how society should nurture those who may start out with a disadvantage into being able to stand on their own two feet and become successful citizens. He came to the United States as an immigrant, who couldn’t speak one word of the English lan-guage, but with a commitment to better himself so he could contribute to society.

IN TRIBUTE TOGEORGE R. BODUROW

Page 11: 12 6...at Boys Town in tribute to her father’s 100th birthday was the perfect way to continue his legacy of giving to Father Flanagan’s home. George R. Bodurow January 29, 1921

His life is an important example of how people can overcome challenges and become positive contributors to society.”

She said she hopes the education fund is also a valuable life lesson her son can use to understand more about his grandfather.

“My son is being raised to understand his grandfather’s life story, and how his determination to overcome a post-WWII mid-life immigration enabled his family to have successful lives,” she said. “He is learning about the qualities needed to overcome adversity and life challenges. And most of all, he is learning that it is critical to give back to the organizations that help to transform lives.”

Dr. Bodurow said she hopes those who benefit from the endowment can use it to better their lives.

“For the children of Boys Town who will benefit from the George R. Bodurow Educational Fund, the message is simple: There are many people in the world, like my father, who truly believe in you and in supporting your educational journey,” she said. “Overcoming challenges is hard work, but with the right resources and adult support, as well as your own determination, you can and will make it through to a better life.”

She said she knows her father would be very proud of how Boys Town has continued to help children and families.

“My father would be proud to see the continued, thoughtful expansion of services, support and outreach to children in need,” she said. “He would have continued to contribute to Boys Town educational projects and funding.”

Dr. Bodurow said she has enjoyed working with all of Boys Town’s staff in establishing the fund for Boys Town youth.

“We are grateful to Boys Town leadership for all the work they are, and will do, to provide the educational foundation for children in their programs around the world,” she said. “Through gifts like this one, we seek to support their continued successful stewardship for all Boys Town children on their journey through life’s challenges to productive adult lives. The spirit of Father Flana-gan is still alive! My father felt it, I feel it and I hope all Boys Town supporters will keep that flame burning for many years to come!”

and outreach to children in need.” — DR. CHRISTINA BODUROW,

Britton may be small in stature, but her vivacious personality has proven to be a big boost to Boys Town’s Memorial Day Run.As an infant, Britton was diagnosed with profound hearing loss. Shortly thereafter, Britton’s mother, Megan Geissinger, convinced family members to participate in the annual five-mile run that raises money for the Center for Childhood Deafness, Language and Learning at Boys Town National Research Hospital®.

“Our lives were forever changed the day Britton received her diagnosis,” Geissinger said. “We, as a family, are so grateful for the amazing technol-ogy and services provided by Boys Town, and we wanted to give back.”

Each year, Megan’s dedication and Britton’s charisma draw more and more people to the run. In 2019, Megan took it a step further and asked her employer, Bland & Associates, to donate to the event.

The Bland Cares Foundation is an employee-built program that allows employees and the company to streamline volunteer and donation efforts to make a strong charitable impact while raising awareness for local organizations that resonate with Bland & Associates employees.

Staff members were so inspired by Britton’s story, many chose to lace up their running shoes and join the race. As Britton grows, so does her team and their passion for the event.

“Our supporters look forward to the run every year and wouldn’t miss it — rain or shine,” Megan said.

“My stepmom didn’t know there was a difference between discipline and beating. And she sure didn’t under-stand that children needed to be fed… at Boys Town, I have a whole bunch of people behind me and in front of me, and to my left and right, everywhere. No matter where I go, I have someone who’s gonna be there to help me.”

“I got some really good scholarships that Boys Town and donors provided

for me to go to a private college. I now teach at Metro Intervention Center,

which is one of Boys Town’s many pro-grams. It’s a short-term intervention pre-

ventative program where students can come from public schools for anywhere

from 1 to 45 days. I feel so fulfilled in what I do… and I absolutely feel like

I’m making a difference.” — COLBI

“It was shocking to me that Boys Town refused to give up on me. And at

some point, what happened is that you grow, the Model seeps in and then you

realize like, I can actually gain the same things that I’m trying to gain by just do-ing the right things. Where I don’t have

to fight constantly anymore.”

For more than 100 years, Boys Town’s growth and success in saving children and healing families has been possible thanks to generous donations and the foresight and courage of Father Flanagan. Boys Town maintains high standards of fiscal responsibility, working to ensure that its resources will last for generations to come to serve America’s children, families and communities.

Flanagan’s Hope for Endowment Fulfilled

In 1930, in the heart of the Great Depression, Father Flanagan wrote that he hoped Boys Town could set up “an endowment fund, the interest of which will pay for the upkeep of our home, so that it will be unnecessary for us to spend a good portion of our time in the appeal and collection of funds.”

Boys Town established the Father Flanagan’s Fund for Needy Children (Fund for Needy Children) in 1941 to provide investment income to support current programs and investment growth to sustain these programs in future years.

Helping Children Today and Into the Future

The Fund for Needy Children is operated as a de facto restricted fund for the purpose of helping children today and into the future. All current unrestricted donations – direct mail, wills and bequests — are spent on the direct care of children. None of these donations are put in the Fund for Needy Children unless directed by the donor. Today, as Boys Town continues to balance the competing needs of current and future generations, the Fund for Needy Children is as important as the day it was established. Based on expected investment returns and inflation factors, the Fund for Needy Children can spend, on average, between 4 and 5 percent of its market value in order to maintain its purchasing power.

Reasonable Risk-Taking to Help More Children

Father Flanagan and his successors trusted God’s goodness and took reasonable risks in order to help more and more children. Boys Town is what it is today because of this trust and risk-taking.

Sound Investments, Solid Management

During 2019, the Father Flanagan’s Fund for Needy Children provided $46,197,000 of support, or 10.00 percent of the funds necessary to operate Boys Town. This was 5.3 percent of the Fund’s January 1, 2019 value.

Sound investments and solid management of the Fund for Needy Children has allowed it to provide stable support for Boys Town at times when markets have been volatile.

Boys Town always strives to be prudent with the dollars received from outside sources, including donations from the public. In 2019, 83.92 percent of every dollar received was spent on the care of children. Supporting services comprised only 16.08 percent of total expenses, which is significantly lower than the national benchmark of 35 percent the not-for-profit industry utilizes.
