Although they might have been hidden by snow and ice for the last few days, piles of leaves have been waiting for pickup for weeks on some Tryon streets. Residents may be asking when the town's leaf pickup service is going to get to them.

Town officials can't give residents an answer because the method the town is using for leaf pickup this year is taking

more time than they had hoped. The town’s leaf machine broke down

about two years ago. Last year, the town's plan to use Saluda’s machine didn’t work out because of scheduling conflicts.

This year the town is using a back-hoe and truck to scoop the leaves, but the process is taking several men and a lot of hours.

“It’s going slower than we would like, but faster than last year,” Hembree said.

Area residents didn’t wake up on Christ-mas morning to snow, but the flakes started soon and didn’t stop for the rest of the day.

The Thermal Belt experienced its first white Christmas since 1963 on Saturday. In 1963, only about two inches of snow were on the ground on Christmas. Saturday’s total in Tryon was four inches of snow, and higher elevations saw a few inches more.

Extreme weather didn’t stop over the weekend and into yesterday as winds and low temperatures moved into the area.

Tryon Fire Chief Joey Davis said as of noon yesterday, Monday, Dec. 27, his de-partment had responded to 20 calls since last Wednesday, Dec. 22, with 10 of the calls coming in yesterday morning.

Crews were called Monday morning to 386 Melrose Ave., where a tree fell on a house. Davis said no one was injured, but the tree caused structural damage to a back bedroom. The fire department also responded to several calls about fallen trees and power lines over the last several days.

The N.C. Highway Patrol and the N.C. Department of Trans-portation also didn’t get much of a vacation over the weekend as each had extra forces on the roads. The highway patrol re-sponded to several accidents on Christmas day in area counties, including Polk, but none were

serious. Troopers said most of the wrecks were vehicles in ditches and occurred because people were driving too fast for conditions.

High winds Sunday night, Dec. 26 and Monday morning, Dec. 27 brought down trees, causing scat-tered power outages. Duke Energy reported 30 Polk residences out of power on Christmas day and those outages grew to 236 as of yesterday around noon.

Winds were forecast to con-tinue through yesterday with a high temperature of 38 degrees yesterday and an overnight low in the teens to low 20s. The rest of the week is forecast to be sunny, with temperatures increasing to a high of 60 degrees on New Year’s Day for the upstate.

Adding on to your home may be more financially advantageous than attempting to sell, given today’s slow housing market. And an addition can give you the square footage you crave while simultaneously increasing your home’s value. Your kitchen feels claustrophobic. Your main level seems like it’s bursting at the seams. Or you’re tired of jockeying for space at the sink every morning. Some days you wish you had a new house.

But your home deserves a second chance, because these pesky challenges might just be blessings in disguise. So before you even think about putting out a “for sale” sign, consider an alternative for creating the ‘new’ home of your dreams: an addition.

Sanitation supervisor Larry Walker said his crews have been working for three weeks or more on leaf collec-tion and he has had as many as 15 people work-ing on it at a time (including inmates).

As of last week, the town had picked up more than 800 bags of leaves. Just last Tuesday, Dec. 21, crews hauled 37 truckloads of leaves from Broadway Avenue alone. Walker also said it is costing about $150 per day to run three

trucks for leaf collection.“The problem is that they

rake out the leaves, pick them up with a front loader and load them on a truck which can’t hold much,” said councilman Austin Chapman.

The town hauls the leaves to the sewer plant and also has to turn the leaf piles.

Tryon Town Council recent-ly discussed

leaf removal and how the service can be made better next year.

“We’ve got a problem with leaves,” said Mayor Alan Peo-ples. “We’ve gotten a B, C and D,

but we’ve never gotten an A.”Resident Howard Greene

told council he had a leaf story for them. He said there were four men working hard at his house recently and it took them one hour just to pick up leaves on one side of his house.

“And they were working,” Greene said.

It took just 40 minutes last year with a leaf machine to go to the top of the hill, Greene said.

“And this time there was still a mess in the road,” Greene said. “They did the best they could. They just can’t do it picking them up like that.”

Councilman Roy Miller said before the town got the leaf ma-

chine, leaves were collected with a backhoe and the process was completed in a month.

“There are certain areas that haven’t been touched,” said Mill-er. “And it started two months ago.”

Walker responded that 20 years ago he doesn’t believe as many people were putting leaves

out for the town to pick up, but Miller argued that there are also a lot of p e o p l e n o w bagging leaves.

“If we don’t provide them a tool to do it ef-ficiently, then

we’re wasting money,” said Chapman.

“We’ve been battling this leaf thing just like the parking thing,” Miller said. “There’s no easy answer.”

A new leaf machine will cost the town about $30,000, accord-ing to quotes from 2009 discussed

at last week’s meeting.Hembree said he knows of

other places that give two times for leaf pickup, and residents have to bag their leaves at all other times.

He said he will look into

Welcome to the

Hanukkah & Kwanzaa

A Special Thank You To All Our Sponsors!

Hanukkah, or Chanukah, is a Jewish celebration that is also known as the Festival of Lights. Hanukkah is an eight-day celebration, most notably marked with the lighting of the menorah. The menorah is a candleholder that holds nine candles; the main eight candles and a “helper” candle called a shamash, which is used to light all eight can-dles. This tradition is derived from a story found in the Talmud about a man named Judas Maccabaeus, or Judah Maccabee. Around 170 B.C., the ruler Epiphanes tried to force the Greek gods upon the Jews. When the Jews would not worship the pagans, Epiphanes raided and destroyed the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. After seven years of fight-ing, Maccabee regained control, and the Temple was restored. The famous story states that only a small vial of oil was found to light the eternal lamps, yet they were blessed and burned for eight days, giving the Jewish people enough time to acquire more oil for the lamps. The symbolic lighting of the menorah occurs at sundown for the eight days during Hanukkah. Children also trade gifts and play with games and toys, such as a driedel. Special foods, such as fried potato cakes and fried donuts, are served during Hanukkah. Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Professor Maulana Karenga, a Black Studies professor from California State University in Long Beach, California. Kwanzaa is a celebration of the African family and culture. It begins on December 26 and ends on January 1. The name Kwan-zaa comes from the Swahili term which means “first fruits of harvest.” Much like the menorah of Hanukkah, Kwanzaa has seven symbolic candles lit each night symbolizing aspects of the culture. Each night, one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa-- unity, self-determination, col-lective work, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith--is discussed. Kwanzaa is also represented by seven symbols--crops, a mat, a candleholder, the seven candles, ears of corn, gifts, and the Kikome Chad Umoja (The Unity Cup).

Winter storm brings doWn trees, poWer linesA tree fell on Glenwalden Circle in Tryon Monday morning, Dec. 27, taking power lines down with it. This was one of the many trees that came down in the high winds Monday. Duke Energy reported 30 Polk residences out of power on Christmas day and those outages grew to 236 as of yesterday around noon. The winds followed a winter storm that gave the area its first white Christmas since 1963.
