FRESHMAN SEMINAR Students in Lake Shore 2016: Freshmen Seminar have been busy analyzing and applying the many consequences that can come with various addictions and how commu-nication skills enable us to proactively deal with life's stresses and conflicts. Specifically, students have been us-ing their writing, listening and speaking skills to analyze how various addictions and reactive behaviors negatively affect everyone--parents, siblings, teachers, coaches and friends. Students have been creating and portraying dif-ferent scenarios where they role-play to truly experience how people are affected by drug and chemical addiction. They are analyzing people's language and body language in proactive ways. Students are also learning how to use self-control in and out of the classroom and in every-day situations. Rather than be aggressive or passive, students are studying appropriate assertive behaviors and choices they can apply to their academic and personal worlds. Knowing how to use self-control is a life skill that every student and adult need to have in order to collaborate with others. EVANS DEMOCRATIC CLUB NOVEMBER MEETING

VFW Commander Joseph Catalano led the Evans Democratic Club in the pledge to the flag at the November 2012 meeting at the VFW. The Club voted in favor of a motion to donate $100 to the VFW's Christmas Basket Fund. The VFW is collect-ing baskets for local needy families so they can enjoy a holiday meal. Last year the VFW gave out 211 baskets to the needy in our community. A Nominating Committee was formed for officers for 2013: Robert "Bob-Cat" Catalino (Town Democratic Chair); Cheryl Grassia; and Joe Ianni. Town Chair Catali-no reviewed the results of the 2012 election, including the large Democratic majority in Evans for many of the lo-cal elections. He analyzed the town-by-town numbers and voter reaction to the type of advertising relied on this past election. The date for the Town Committee's annual meet-ing will be announced in the near future. Town Board member Paul Cooper announced the Town Park's Department's Santa In The Park event on Sat., Dec. 8 from 6 pm to 8pm. There will be coloring contests, a hayride, cookies, hot chocolate and a visit from Santa. The house-decorating contest will be judged on Decem-ber 10. The Town Board passed the fire department budget; there were cuts to the ambulance service. The Water Project is continuing with further paperwork. There was a presentation regarding the new development in High-land which will accommodate 54 new homes. Cooper es-timates that 50,000+ pounds of electronics have been kept out of landfills through the Town's recycling program. Town Clerk Jonica Dimartino reported collection of school taxes is ongoing. Unpaid bills will be tendered to the County for collection before resorting to assessment upon the homeowner's tax bills. Sales are continuing for fishing licenses and doe permits. Christmas In The Village will be held on the morning and afternoon of Sat., Dec. 8. The schedule will be in the Pennysaver. Dimartino is approaching the 4th year of her term and is preparing for her 2013 re-election run. Town Board mem-ber Dennis Feldmann is approaching the 2nd year of his two-year term and will be seeking re-election. The other Town positions on the 2013 ballot are Town Justice and Highway Superintendent. The next Club meeting will be at the VFW on Tues., Dec. 18. TECH DAY AT THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB A SUCCESS

The computer lab at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Shore recently underwent a major transformation due to a generous grant from the Ed Tech foundation and vol-unteers from the Evans National Bank and K & H Indus-tries. Volunteers worked over the hot summer to ready the room for the 2012-2013 Club year - approximately 20 flat screen monitors and PC’s were installed. At the time the Club opened its doors in the fall of 2011, the computer lab consisted of computers and equipment that were generously donated by members in the com-munity. Club Board volunteers pieced together donated computers and monitors in order to create a computer lab for the youth members. The lab, which allows kids to complete their homework, research, and to play online educational games, is very popular at the Club. “The addition of ten computers was a much needed and appreciated addition to our Club. The Club is grow-ing everyday which means there are more members that need the computers to complete their assignments. The members also enjoy being able to do research, surfing the internet, and playing games online. The computer lab is always full everyday the Club is open,” said Unit Direc-tor, Andrea Sunday. To date the Club has served over 300 youth in the Ev-ans-Brant communities and has approximately 160 active members. The Club has an average daily attendance of 70-100 members. That is 70-100 children daily that are in a safe place that offers educational and life enhancing programs. The Boys and Girls Club is a “Positive Place for Kids” and a much needed addition to the local com-munity. “The generosity from the surrounding community has been overwhelming” Ms. Sunday said. “Whether it is a cash donation; donations of art supplies, board games and video games, donating the materials to build our new car-petball table (Sam’s Lumber Co.), or supporting one of our fundraising events, the members of this community have come together to help build a place where kids can come to be great. HORNBERGER TO RUN IN NIKE CROSS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

TJ Hornberger ran in the Nike Cross NY Regionals on Saturday at Bowdoin Park in Wappinger Falls, NY. He placed 4th with a time of 15:56 and qualified for the Nike Cross National Championships being held this Saturday in Portland, Oregon. EVANS-BRANT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE VOTING RESULTS

The Annual Meeting of the Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce was held at the American Legion Post 928 on Tuesday, November 27. The agenda included a mixer and the annual election for 3 seats on the 9-member Board of Directors. The board members elected for 2013-2015 are Robert Biondi, Nancy Furey, and Terra Perry. Biondi is one of the new owners of The Angola Pennysaver with extensive experiencein the print and online advertising industries. Furey has spent her career in credit union work, including managing the Lake Shore FCU until her recent retirement. Perry is an Assistant Vice President for the Evans Banks and assistant manager of the Evans branch at Beach and Erie Roads. PIZZA HUT RAISING DOUGH FOR BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF LAKE SHORE

For the second year in a row, the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Shore successfully secured $3,000 from the Pizza Hut Raising Dough for Kids Foundation. The funds were awarded to Unit Director Andrea Sunday at a check pre-sentation ceremony in Hamburg on November 2, 2012. Specifically, funds will be utilized to enhance the Club’s Healthy Habits/Triple Play Program designed to incorporate healthy living and active learning in every part of the Club experience. Healthy Habits emphasizes good nutrition, regular physical activity and improving overall well-being. The members of the Club love the Healthy Habits Cooking Club! Every Friday, fifteen members are able to participate in the cooking club. They learn about kitchen safety, proper food handling procedures, how to read a recipe, and how to use measuring instruments properly. So far this year the members have learned about healthy substitutions in recipes, portion control, and incorporating the food groups into their recipes. Last year the members participated in the Running Club, a Triple Play activity, logging approximately 140 miles in the gym. “We hope to exceed that by reaching our goal of running 200 miles this winter and spring,” said Unit Director Andrea Sun-day. “This year we plan on offering incentives such as water bottles, pedometers, and gift cards to Dick’s Sport-ing Goods for members that log the most miles or partici-pation days,” she said. In 2002 the locally owned and operated, Hospitality West, LLC, d/b/a Pizza Hut, formed Raising Dough for Kids, a non-profit (501-C3) organization to raise monies for Western New York Children's Charities. Since 2002 the Pizza Hut restaurants have raised and donated over $670,000 to Buffalo, Jamestown and Elmira area chari-ties. The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is a community based organization that serves over 200 youth in the Ev-ans-Brant District. The Club does not receive any public funding and relies solely on membership, corporate giv-ing, grants and private donations to support its operation. ARCARA PROMOTED TO MAJOR Eric David Arcara, son of Richard and Sandra Arcara, formerly of Angola, has been promoted to Major in the United States Air Force. Major Arcara is currently serving in Afghanistan as an Air Battle Manager. He is responsible for Command and Control. His duty is to ensure that the day to day air mis-sion is executed. Major Arcara is a 1994 graduate of Lake Shore Central.
