Dundalk retains gold standard in Tidy Towns

By Niamh Kirk

There was an impressive haul of medals awarded to Co Louth towns that faired very well in this years’ Tidy Town competition.

Tallanstown has kept up their good form following their overall win in 2010 and was awarded a gold medal in their category B, Ireland Tidiest Village with 309 points. Not only that but the picturesque village was also awarded in some of the sub categories and was awarded the Best Bring Bank Award for the Midlands and East.

In the report the village was commended for its information and planning in the built environment while the landscaping was also praised for in particular the newly designed centrepiece in the square. They also described the work

at Maguire Park as “fantastic” and “hard to fault”.

Dundalk town was also highly commended being awarded once again with a Gold medal for a town with a population over 25,000 as well as receiving a Tourism Award worth €1,000. The refurbishment of Market Square was commended with the report describing it as “now a superb piece of urban space. In the bright sunshine the installations here are at their best and the many children playing in the fountain is evidence of its success.”

In terms of landscaping the plants that enhance the area were noted as “the excellent and imaginative work on

the roundabouts” as you enter Dundalk.

The main downfalls being the condition of empty buildings in the town, the volume of weeds and graffiti, litter, a full car park but empty bike lane and the traffic being less than orderly. However the delays in traffic did allow the adjudicator to admire the Dublin Road area.

Knockbridge was awarded a Silver medal in the small village category scoring 303 points and was highly commended in the county awards while both Ardee and Blackrock were awarded a bronze medal each. And North Louth village Omeath won an Endeavour award for their effort to improve on last year’s result.

It is an impressive result for the county overall and an improvement on last

year’s results for many of the towns that entered. Abbeyshrule in Co Longford was awarded Ireland’s Tidiest Town with 312 points.

DARREN Geogheghan took centre stage at one of the nation’s biggest sporting events on Sunday when he made an appearance at half time during the drawn All-Ireland Hurling Final between Galway and Kilkenny. The 12-year-old earned his place in the INTO Sevens mini game after winning the Louth Cumann na mBunscoil skills competition.Darren, who attends Kilkerley NS, plays for Nh Moninne U-12, where his father, Charlie, is a coach and older brother, Ronan, also plays. He is pictured with GAA President, Liam O’Neill.

A LOCAL charity is to benefit from an attempt to break into a bank ATM machine. Dam-age amounting to €13,600 was caused and the machine belong-ing to AIB was rendered useless in the incident, Dundalk Court heard.

However, the damage was cov-ered under an insurance policy, and Judge John Lindsay ordered 34 year-old Gavin Kavanagh of Drive 2, Muirhevnamor, Dun-dalk to pay a weekly sum of €30 to Saint Vincent de Paul instead of paying compensation for the damage that he admitted caus-ing.

The Judge was told that Ka-vanagh could only afford to pay

this sum weekly and it would take him eight or nine years to make full restitution. The judge said he wouldn’t have him pay for that length of time, but for a number of years. He warned him he would face a lengthy jail term if he failed to make the pay-ments.

He adjourned the case to March 6 to monitor how he is going.

Kavanagh appeared before the court as a result of an attempt to get money in the machine located at the Maxol Filling Station on the Avenue Road on March 29 2010.

Garda Inspector Martin Beggy recalled at 6.10 on that morning Garda were called to the station.

The front of the machine was taken apart and a red brick area removed. A teleportor was dis-covered at the scene.

The Inspector Martin Beggy said a male was observed on CCTV damaging the machine and identified. Subsequently Gardai arrested the defendant wearing the same clothing.

Solicitor Conor McGuill said that Kavanagh and another party took a screw driver to the ma-chine in the hope of taking out the front and money would fall out. The defendant was very reli-ant on alcohol at the time.

Kavanagh was stated to have 29 convictions mainly for public order offences.

Scenic cycle for Special OlympicsArounD 60 cyclists took to the roads to help raise funds for Special Olympics Ireland on Saturday. The cyclists set off from Dundalk along a 90km route that took in the scenic ravesdale national Park, Flagstaff and then through newry before taking the

townpath to Scarva. While some of the

seasoned cyclists took on the challenge of the hills around the Long Woman’s grave on the return journey, other went through ravensdale.

All the money raised at the event will help fan the special

Olympics flame and ensure that people with an intellectual disability will continue to be able to participate in sports training and competitions in the local area.

Sarah Joyce, Event Manager from Special Olympics Ireland said “This has been

a fantastic event and our sincere thanks goes to everyone who supported it.”

“Although there was a strong wind on the day the sun shone which allowed the cyclists to enjoy some of the most scenic landscapes in Ireland”, she added.

The scene of the fire on the M1 motorway

Gardai investigate Dundalk fireDundalk Gardai have launched an investigation following a fire at the Ard Dealgan apartments in Quay St on Sunday afternoon.

Nobody was injured in the blaze at the unoccupied apartments which are owned by Priory Hall developer Tom McFeely.

The apartments have been lying empty since 2009 when residents were asked to leave as it was found that the building didn’t meet fire safety regulations.

Twenty-eight tenants moved out and were re-housed after the building was deemed dangerous.

Louth County Council fire and rescue received a call just after 5.20 on Sunday evening with reports of a fire in the apartment complex. Two fire engines from Dundalk and one from Ardee were called to the scene as fire-fighters spent an hour and half to extinguish the fire.

According to assistant chief fire officer Phil

O’Brien the blaze was caused maliciously after somebody entered the building without permission and caused the fire in the penthouse apartment.

“There was extensive damage to one of the penthouse apartments and we are led to believe that the fire was started maliciously. Gardai are currently investigating the scene” he explained.

Meanwhile a section of the M1 Dublin- Belfast motorway was closed for a period on Friday evening after a

fire broke out in a lorry carrying bales of hay. The blaze started near the Ballymascanlon roundabout and reignited late on

Friday evening before firefighters finally extinguished it. Nobody was injured in the blaze.

Returned for trial on assault chargeCathal Murphy (49) of Knockattin, Knockbridge was returned for trial on two charges of assault alleging harm and bodily harm to Dundalk Circuit Court on October 2.

He was remanded at Dundalk District Court on Wednesday on his own bail of €1,000, a condition of which is that he signs on every Saturday at the Crescent Garda Station.

“I would have hoped things could have been moved forward more quickly over the last couple of months” said the local Labour party senator.

“I did welcome the meeting and it was inter-esting to hear the views of the various town councillors with regards to their problems and potential solutions to the cycle lanes but I had hoped that more resolu-tions would have come out of the meeting.” she

added.“I will continue to

pursue this issue in the Seanad as I don’t feel as though the businesses in the area are satisfied that many of their concerns have been answered. These people are paying huge rates and they should be listened to if their businesses are being affected.” she concluded.

Senator Moran’s involvement with the cycle lane issues goes back to March when she raised the issue in the Seanad which prompted

Minister Alan Kelly to come to Dundalk to see the issues for himself

Following his visit, Minister Kelly appoint-ed an inspector from the NTA to view the works and evaluate the extent of the problems which were occurring.

Following this inspec-tion it was recommend-ed that the town council implement a number of adjustments to the cycle lane layout.

These changes are expected to be carried out by the council in the next few weeks.

There was good news last week for job seekers as National Pen announced 250 seasonal jobs in Dundalk. It is hoped that the positions will be filled in the coming weeks as the company moved into its new facility in the Xerox business park. The new manufacturing plant will be three times the size of its former home and will accommodate the company’s planned expansion in coming years.

While the positions are advertised as seasonal the company do hope to offer many of the seasonal staff permanent contracts. Recruitment is already underway adding to the company’s 255 permananet staff already employed in the Dundalk facility. National Pen specialises in the development, manufacturing and sales of promotional materials and has more than one million active customers across 19 countries. .“We opened our doors

in Dundalk in 1987. At that time we supplied one market – Germany - with only one product, one design and a limited workforce of four people. Now with over 25 years under our belt in Dundalk, the National Pen story has a long way to run yet” said Peter Kelly, Senior Vice President at National Pen Europe.Barry O’Leary the chief executive in the IDA said that it was excellent news for Dundalk and would help the company continue to expand.

SUICIDE prevention charity SOSAD is continuing its efforts to get their message of preventing suicidal behaviour during World Suicide prevention week.

To commemorate those who have died as a result of suicide SOSAD held a candle lit remem-brance vigil in Market Square/St Patricks Cathedral on World Sui-cide Prevention Day on Monday.

The week-long series of events continues with the Pop-Up Gal-lery featuring some of the area finest artists and photographers tomorrow (Thursday) followed by a mock cycle on Friday, cul-minating in a free open air concert featuring a line up of local acts on Saturday afternoon. All the events are taking place at Market Square, Dundalk.

The group also focus heavily on preventative action by trying to raise awareness and remove

stigma surrounding mental health that prevents them from getting the help and support they need.

SOSAD hope that people will do their best to care for your friends and loved ones by learning the warning signs of suicide and offering support when they see them in their friends.

These include Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live, acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly, In-creasing use of alcohol or drugs, talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain and many more.

Suicide is a real community problem so please look after each other and be there for those you love and try to do something nice for someone you know or love as your own contribution to World Suicide Prevention Week.

SOSAD Ireland (Dundalk) can be contacted 24 hours a day on 042-9327311 if you are concerned about a family member or friend

who you might feel needs help or is having suicidal thoughts.

Meanwhile, MAD.Youth Thea-tre’s Project YOLO is raising awareness and prevention of teen suicide.

Part of their aim to raise aware-ness is to promote positive mental health with “Picture of Happi-ness”.

They set up a photo booth and video cameras in the Marshes Shopping Centre on Saturday Sep-tember 7 and asked people to talk about what makes them happy.

They are continuing their mis-sion to raise awareness by hosting an event on the Friday September 14 from 6pm to 7pm at GF Dun-dalk unit 1/2 North link Retail Park, Coes Road Dundalk.

They will be releasing 100 Red balloon in commemoration of lives lost by suicide.

Brian holds off top class field to become first ‘Cic Saor’ champion

County Louth has a new All-Ireland cham-pion after Cooley sharp-shooter Brian White captured the inaugural All-Ireland Cic-Saor championship at the Marist sport’s grounds on Saturday.

White beat off stiff competition from a host of GAA star names to walk away with the Cic Saor trophy and a cheque for €2000. 47 entered the competition which was organised by Dundalk Young Ireland’s football club with county players such as four time All Ireland winner and Kerry superstar Bryan Sheehan rubbing shoul-ders with ordinary club players from all around the country.

Barney Rock, Joe Sheridan, Conor Mc-Manus, Oisin McCon-vile, Paddy O’Rourke, Alan Mulhall and Paddy Keenan were just a few of the star names to try their luck in the compe-tition which was played

out over six rounds in front of enthusiastic on-lookers. It was Cooley man Brian White who kept his nerve to see off a strong challenge from Meath’s Joe Sheridan with another Louth man Jim McEneaney back in third place. Bryan Shee-han finished in fourth place while Stephen Connolly a club player from Naas finished a very credible fifth.

Young Ireland’s Adrian O’Donoghue who helped organise the event spoke of his de-light at how the day had turned out and thanked everybody who had helped make the day such a success.

“I have to say that I’m delighted with how the day turned out. Two weeks ago we were considering pulling the plug on the event after the trouble we had with the GAA but everybody in the Young Ireland’s club pulled together and it was great to see some of the biggest names in GAA come along to sup-

that local clubs around Louth might have got in-volved but it wasn’t to be and hopefully next year they will get on board. This Cic Saor champi-onship will be back next year and it will be bigger and better.

“I have to thank the Marist college for their generosity in lending us their pitches, D4 live and Digiweb who streamed the entire event for free on our website and to Justin Tierney for putting the website together. We got great support from lots of the smaller busi-nesses around town with a whole host of people offering their services for free to help us stage the event. Hopefully everybody who turned up enjoyed their day and we will see them all next year when we do it all over again.” added the Young Ireland’s man.

This week sees the most prestigious WAKO World Kickboxing Championships take place in Bratizlava, Slovakia. One local stu-dent has the honour of representing not only Dundalk’s MAS-F but also Ireland in the older cadet weapons division of the competition.

Monique Martin, sev-en times Irish Champion and holder of five World Games Gold medals will take to the arena flying the tricolour proudly.

Monique at 15 years old is MAS-F’s longest standing member and one of the most success-ful students to come out of the club. On her last outing to these World Championships, she came home with a rank-ing of fifth overall, a fantastic achievement in itself.

Musical Weapons Hard Style, is one of the more scrutinizing of the disciplines in

the competition. With a mimimum and maxi-mum time allowed for the demonstration, Monique will simulate a battle against numer-ous opponents using not one, but two Katana

(samaurai swords). She will be assessed on her control of the weapons, the traditional aspects of the art, her manipulation and degree of difficulty of moves utilised.

Up against the top in

the world at her level, Monique holds her own training every day and is looking forward to the challenge ahead and proud to be part of what is ranked as the world championships.

To get to the team, Monique had to rank in the top two in Leinster and the top two in the country. After qualify-ing, several training camps were attended to assess if her form was of the standard to present at this level.

Dundalk’s Martial Arts School of Fitness have been fundraising all Summer to help al-lay the financial costing of the trip, while her chief instructor Wayne Rutherford has been honing her form and sword moves readying her for all eventualilties. Wayne is very confident of her abilities and feels very positive about her chances of securing a medal.

As renovations at the Spirit Store continue the efforts to entertain patrons have not abated as the bar announce a number of free gigs in the intimate downstairs setting.

Two Kentucky-based musi-cians Daniel Martin Moore and Joan Shelly are set to bring their celebrated song writing talents to the venue with an acoustic per-

formance of tracks about leaving and returning home from their al-bum, Farthest Field on Thursday night (September 13).

They follow it up with MOD, Motown and Northern Soul night on Friday September 14 and then offer something altogether differ-ent in the form of French DJ Nas-dak who impressed two weeks

ago with an impressive set of hip-hop and electronic music fit for the setting.

It took only 20 minutes for Bell X 1 to sell out but there are still a few tickets left for Damien Dempsey who is set to perform in the renovated and extended venue once it reopens this December 12.

Trailtrekker challenge

John Grant

I’d have to go for Stephen Staunton. He was a great player and represented Dundalk very well. I’m a Celtic supporter and he played for us as well.

QUESTION:

Who isDundalk’s greatest sports star?

OvertOyOu

Jim GallagerI’dsay it would have to be Stephen Staunton. He played for Liverpool when they were the best club in England and he was a record cap holder for Ireland as well.

Colin Byrne

I’d have to go for Peter McArdle. In my opinion he’s the greatest long distance runner this town has ever produced. He represented Ireland well back in the Tokyo Olympics.

Jim McLaughlin

I’d go for Tommy McConville. I saw him play many times back in the 1970s and he was a class above everybody. He was capped at international level as well.

Sean Duffy

I am a cycling enthusiast so I’m going for Jack Murphy who was a national champion and one of the best cyclists in the country. He’s still a great cyclist.

Oxfam’s Trailtrekkers once again took to the Cooley Mountains to help combat poverty in the some of the world’s most resource-deprived regions. Taking in the Cooley Penninsula, The Ring of Gullion and the Mournes, 298 people walked non-stop, day and night over either the 50km or 100km course. Among them was Dundalk team ‘Lost and Confused’ who completed the 50km challenge. The team consisted of team captain Barry Oliver and Niall McCorran, Padraig Oliver and Andrew O’Brien. The endurance event is now in its fourth year and continues to push participants to their limits while help raising funds and awareness for some of the most poverty striken countries in the world.

At the weekend, Dundalks MAS-F took a team of juniors to Tallaght to compete in the TMA Open 2012.

First out on the floor was the be-ginners weapons division in which Shaun Monahan and Daniel McK-eown took to the competitive floor for the first time. Shaun manipulat-ed his nun-chuckus with speed earn-ing him a Silver and Daniel showed class and determination with his bo-staff to secure the bronze.

Next up was the advanced divi-sions. Darren O’Donogh went out with speed and showed again how it is done in musical forms, to se-cure the gold. Juniors Enda Kelly

and Monique Martin entered the older advanced division, Enda tak-ing Silver and Monique securing the bronze.

Darren went up again, this time with weapons and secured the silver in this section.

Competition sparring began with Tomás Flanagan entering the ad-vanced semi-contact division and finishing in a very close quarter fi-nal.

First time competitor Lee Flana-gan took to the floor against tough opposition. The high paced fight went to neck and neck, then Lee moved ahead by a point however in

the final three seconds of the fight his opponent secured the win. Lee secured a very good quarter final position on his first outing.

Continous sparring was next on the agenda for Tomás and Darren. Each one battling into the semi fi-nals in their respective advanced age divisions. Up against national champions in both sections, the boys fought with pride and each se-cured bronze medals.

All in all, while a long day, for MAS-F it was a successful one. Stu-dents brought home, one gold, three silver and four bronze.

‘’Kiedy dzieci nic nie robią- robią głupstwa’’. A. Baxton twierdzi, ż e naszym ‘’najważniejszym obowiązkiem wobec dzieci , todać im szczęście’’.

Dlatego też chcielibyśmy wspólnie ustalic dzień tygodnia, godz-iny i częstotliwość tych zajęć.

NewSin Brief

From page 1Matthew who has been studying faith healing for seven years says that he and his friends used a technique called distant healing to help his cousin out.“Two of the guys had been over in Brazil a while back and they got to meet the world famous faith healer John of God who is known as the miracle man. He

gave them a healing device known as ‘Crystal Beds’ and we used that with Chris on Friday evening” says Matthew. Before Chris had his operation in Beaumont he was brought down for an MRI scan to find the exact location of the bleed. Mairead was told there was a huge risk with this type of operation and she was beginning to fear the

worst. However much to the amazement of the doctors the MRI showed the bleeding had stopped and that everything inside Chris’s head looked normal.“I couldn’t believe it when the doctors told me the bleeding had stopped”, said Mairead. No words can describe the feeling I had when I went into

his room on the Saturday morning and seen him sitting up in bed looking as healthy as I’d ever seen him. “He said he felt great and he was just his normal self. He was sitting up talking to me asking could I get him a McDonalds. I was just so delighted and relieved to see him talk as I had spent all the previous night thinking I was going

to bury my son. The doctors have told me they are absolutely baffled as to what happened.“I wouldn’t have been big into faith healing before but this has really opened my eyes and I firmly believe that Matthew and his friends saved Chris.” insisted Mairead Chris got out of hospital yesterday just five days after suffering his brain aneurysm and says that the experience has changed his whole outlook on life.
