Raider fan support out in full force

Santa Fe falls short of State FinalsBy DAVID S. WISENER

Today EditorALACHUA – The Santa

Fe High School football team lost a tough game to Jacksonville Raines Friday night, 35-14 in the State Semifinals.

The attendance at Raider Field was standing-room-only as fans packed the stadium and overflowed to either side in order to support the Raider’s first semifinal appearance in more than two decades.

The defense bent but didn’t break for most of the game against Raines’ spread attack, which includes 2016 University of Florida wide receiver commit Rick Wells.

The Raider offense had a difficult time finding consistency against Raines’ defense, though, going three-and-out several times and relying on two long touchdown runs for their two scores.

When Santa Fe did attempt to pass, it often found success, as Raines keyed in on stopping the run, which is by far the staple of the Raider offense.

Santa Fe’s inability to sustain drives led to Raines nearly doubling time of possession, 30 minutes to 18, and wore out the Raider defense in the second half.

The score was 21-14 until late in the third quarter, when Wells gashed the defense on a long touchdown run.

The game was put away late in the fourth quarter when a gassed Raider defense allowed a short touchdown in garbage time after the offense turned the ball over on downs deep inside Raider territory.

Santa Fe coach Bill Wiles gathered his team after the game and emphatically declared that, while the loss certainly stings, this is just the beginning of the Raider’s return to football prominence.

“We’re not going back to the way it used to be,” he said. “We’re not the Santa Fe of the past 15 years. We have a football program now.”

Hello

Get the scoop

No matter how lost you are, God is pursuing youI am lost without my

smartphone. It wasn’t long ago that

I kept track of my life with a pen and Day-Timer. Pens were abundant, and I rarely lost track of my large Day-Timer.

Not so with my pocket-size smartphone. It easily slips between truck seats, becomes buried under pillows on the couch, or is left at the register when I pay the restaurant tab.

When it’s lost, so am I and there are few things I hate more than being lost! Thank goodness for the “Find my Phone” function on my tablet.

The Bible records a series of stories that Jesus told about being lost. He begins with a story about a shepherd and a

wandering sheep:All the tax collectors

and sinners were gathering around Jesus to listen to

him. The Pharisees and legal experts were grumbling, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose someone among you had 100 sheep and lost one of them. Wouldn’t he leave the other 99 in the pasture and search for the lost one until he finds it? And when he finds it, he is thrilled and places it on his shoulders. When he arrives home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Celebrate with me because I’ve found my lost sheep.’” Luke 15:1-6 CEB

He follows with similar stories about a lost collector’s coin and a lost son. As with the lost sheep, each resonates with the desperation of losing something or someone

so precious, the absolute determination to regain them, and the relief and exuberance of recovering such treasured possessions or relationships.

As engaging as they are, I am fascinated not only by the stories, but also by Jesus’ audience’s motivation. A group known as Pharisees apparently objected to Jesus’ social standards. They found it scandalous that he would associate with those many deemed outcasts from society.

In part, I get it, particularly the tax collectors. It’s hard to feel warm and fuzzy about the IRS.

As to the specific sins of the rest of the crowd, they are evidently unmentionable in polite company. They are simply “sinners.”

In either case, the Pharisees clearly found these folks inappropriate company for someone claiming to speak for God.

Jesus responds with a familiar tactic: storytelling. And as his stories unfold, at least two themes emerge.

First, God considers precious those whom many condemn. It is so easy to rush to judgment knowing little of another’s story or background.

In contrast, God knows all our stories and still loves us. Despite other’s opinions or even our own self condemnation, He still desires us. As the sheep knows the voice of the true shepherd, we too can turn our ear to God’s invitation to experience his love and

grace. Secondly, God goes

to any length to find and renew his lost children. He did not create us to live in isolation from him or one another. Sheep belong in the fold, coins need to be in the collection, and lost sons and daughters are welcome at the family table. He will never cease searching and calling us to Himself until we are seated.

So, where do you find yourself in Jesus’ story? Feeling lost? Separated? Unworthy? Judgmental? Regardless, what matters is that God loves you. And that is the most important story of all.

GAINESVILLE – As 2015 starts to wind down, world-renowned food scientists at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences are already predicting trends for 2016. As they do, here are some hints as to what you can expect see in grocery stores and on your dinner table:

Total sensory foods – Smart food manufacturers now appreciate that flavor and aroma alone are not enough for many consumers, and that visual and textural stimuli are also important to the consumer. Foods incorporating innovative approaches to a blending of sensory attributes will likely win the consumers’ dollar. Scientific studies show that people shown a picture of a high-calorie food, such as pizza or pastry before

experiencing an unfamiliar taste will find that taste more enjoyable than if

they were shown a picture of a low-calorie food, such as watermelon or green beans. Thus, the appearance of a food is a critical part of the eating experience

Decline of grilling – Grilling has been the go-to way of cooking red meats and poultry, but newly re-kindled concerns about the safety of red meats and meats and poultry cooked in conditions that may char or add smoke may cause consumers to return to recipes that call for baking in the good old oven. A contributor to this trend is the explosion of recipe sharing on social media for mixed meat and vegetable meals prepared easily in the oven.

A gut feeling -- Pre- and probiotics continue to be important to our health, including brain health and

mood. Consumers need to understand how diet impacts their health by way of their microbiota. Sue Percival, a professor of food science and human nutrition, also wants consumers to understand how probiotics work to make you healthier, reduce stress and give folks greater peace of mind. People can tackle inflammation by consuming foods and nutrients that include pre- and probiotics. For example, bioactive compounds in cranberries are absorbed in low amounts and degraded by the microbiota, suggesting two benefits from the fruit. For example, one such benefit – shown by UF/IFAS scientists -- is that cranberries support the human immune function.

The Food Safety Modernization Act – Keith Schneider is among a group of UF/IFAS faculty who will help educate stakeholders

on the sweeping changes being made to national food safety regulations with a $1.2 million grant from the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The grant will help establish the Southern Training, Education, Extension, Outreach and Technical Assistance Center to Enhance Produce Safety at UF. The food safety act will mean safer food for the consumer, said Schneider, a UF/IFAS professor of food science and human nutrition. UF/IFAS’ team effort will focus on food producers, helping stakeholders meet the new regulations, which in turn should ensure Florida’s agribusiness stays healthy and profitable, he said.

Reducing food waste -- Food waste is an important emerging issue and it can affect sustainability, not to mention consumers’ pocket books. Most wastage of fresh

produce occurs in consumers’ homes because they think it doesn’t look or taste good, said Amy Simonne, a professor of food safe and quality. For many produce items, proper storage plays a key role in preserving better taste and appearance. Consumers can save money and help preserve the environment by learning best practices for storing produce properly.

High-end fish -- George Baker, an assistant professor in the department of food

science and human nutrition and a Florida Sea Grant specialist, predicts we’ll see more fish products that emphasize product origin or that highlight fishery sustainability. For example, fish might be labeled, “sustainable, small-batch salmon.” On the flip side, we’ll find unrefrigerated, ready-to-eat pouches of flavored tuna products.
