THE SOLDIERS SONG.Itis not on thebattle field -* That Iwould wish to die;Itis not ona broken shield

Pd breathe mylatest sigh,Although a soldier knows not bow

to dreada soldiers doom,Pd ask no laurelsfor mybrow,'

No-trophiesfor mytomb.

It is not that Iscorn the wrath,The sjjjdiers proudly wears,;

Itis not that Ifear the death,.The soldierbravely dares.

When slaughteredcomrades round me lie,* I'd be the last to yield;

But, yet Iwould not wishto dieUpon tße battlefield.

When faint and bleedingin the fray, jOh! still may Iretain '* iEnough'of life, to crawl away , jTo this sweetvale again;

And, like the wounded,wearydove,That flutters toher nest, j

Oh may Ireach my own true love,And die uponher breast!
