Prepare for the Fair

Below we’ve provided some of our best advice when it comes to making a great impression at a Career Fair.

Before the Fair: Create Goals, Do Your Research, Prepare Your Pitch, Effective Tools

Create GoalsAsk yourself: What do I want to get out of the fair? How am I going to stand out to potential employers? What type of employers do I want to connect with?Am I only looking for connections, or am I ready to apply to work with these employers right now?

Do Your Research● Create a list of target employers you want to meet at the fair. Start with employers

that align with your career goals and interests.● The person who gets the job is almost always the person who has done their

research to understand the employer - the company’s values, mission statements, and goals. This can be as simple as going on the company’s website and getting to know what they stand for. It is common for employers to ask “What do you know about _______ company?” Be prepared!

Preparing Your Pitch● Create a 30-second pitch

○ This is a statement that sums you up in about 30 seconds to an employer. Be sure to highlight:

■ Your special skills;■ Accomplishments;■ Career objectives and;■ How you can be valuable to that company

Careernival Student Work Fair | Thursday, September 14, 2017

Effective Tools● Business cards

○ These are the best way to make sure employers remember you, as you can make a big impression on just a little card!

○ Not sure how to make an effective business card? Find some hints here: http://goo.gl/SXP5M1 and to print cards for cheap, try http://goo.gl/cLHPPx

● Your targeted industry resume○ Don’t forget that Ryerson University hosts resume workshops as well as

provide one-on-one appointments with Resume & Online Profile Advisors to make sure that your best qualities are highlighted! Check them out here: https://goo.gl/vT5MSL.

At the Fair: Dress for Success, Navigating Employer Tables, First Impressions, Ask & Listen

Dress for SuccessAn employer will be evaluating whether or not you fit in with the company culture when meeting you. Part of that culture is the type of dress expected for your role in a company. Check out pages 56 & 57 of Ryerson’s Career Compass for more details. http://www.ryerson.ca/careercompass/CareerCompass/index.html

Here are some guidelines to help you dress to impress: ● Jeans, shorts, and running shoes or sandals are not acceptable● Clothes should be clean, ironed, and professional● Avoid overly flashy and bright colours; that includes jewellery● Keep perfume/cologne to a minimum or not at all● It’s great to show individuality in the way you dress, just don’t let it become

distracting from your other qualities● Make sure you feel comfortable in what you wear - you will feel more relaxed!● For more information about dressing and acting professional, visit

http://goo.gl/NgBXEF

Navigating Employer Tables● Refer to the fair map to locate the employers on your target list.● Employers will give you swag and informational cards throughout the day. Bring a

bag or a folder to carry these items so your hands are free.

Careernival Student Work Fair | Thursday, September 14, 2017

First ImpressionsTo make a good first impression make sure you:

● Introduce yourself. Now is the time to use your 30-second pitch!● Smile naturally● Establish eye contact ● Express energy, positivity and enthusiasm● Adopt a firm, dry handshake

○ Feeling sweaty? Step into the bathroom to wash your hands for a refresh.● If you want to ensure you impress your target employers, practice your pitch on

employers who are not your target list.

Ask & ListenEmployers may choose to tell you about their company and ask if you have questions, or they may leave it up to you to show an interest and find out as much or as little as you want.

● Listen before you ask. It is common for employers to give a short introduction to their company when a group stops by their booth, so they aren’t answering the same questions all day.

○ Listen to their introduction. Did they answer your question in their introduction about the company?

● Use open-ended questions that generate more than a “yes” or “no” response○ Say: “How would you describe your company culture?”○ Don’t say: “Do you have positions open in IT?”

● If you have a lot of inquiries that you think will take more time to answer, ask them for a business card or an email address to someone you could contact to get more information. This could be phrased as:

■ “Thank you for your time. If I have more questions, who would you recommend that I speak to?”

■ “I see that there’s a lot of students who want to speak with you right now. Is there a more convenient time when we could speak later this week?”

Careernival Student Work Fair | Thursday, September 14, 2017

After The Fair

At the first opportunity, jot down some of the following. It may be best to do this after you’ve walked away from the employer’s table.

TIP: The back of business cards you receive is a good place to make quick notes.

● Who have you met → what were the recruiters’ names and what company were they from?

● What positions are they hiring for? What, from those positions, are you interested in applying for?

● Make a list of those companies you left a resume with ● Timelines and notes about when to have follow-up conversations, if applicable● If you have promised something to the recruiter (i.e. you said you would forward

your resume to them that evening), be sure to follow though. ● Connect with recruiters and industry professional you met. Add them to LinkedIn or

send them an email to thank them for their time.
