92 names here.

Around 17 were killed or mortally wounded.( Phisterer says 16)

8 enlisted men died in Confederate captivity between October 12, 1864 and January 1865.

About 6 men survived being wounded and captured. (Phisterer counts 22 missing)

9-10 men survived captivity although it is not certain that all were kept at Salisbury. The men of

the 115th would have been among the first to go to Salisbury, along with the large numbers of Union

captives from Weldon Rail Road . Theoretically, this would have been an advantage in finding the

best shelter, for example.

About 43 men are listed as wounded and not captured, including Major Walrath and Lieut. Colonel

Johnson. (Phisterer counts 35 total). Sunstroke was not counted as a wound but I include it here

because it is very disabling or fatal. [ HOLZNER, JOHN.—Age, 40 years. Enlisted at Glen, to serve

three years, and mustered in as private, Co. A , August 6,1862;

captured in action, September 15, and paroled, September 16,

at Deep Bottom, Va., as Halzner.]

115th New York at Deep Bottom, VA on August 16 and 18, 1864 Page 16

The majority of casualties and captures came on August 16. That is, four officer casualties and 56

wounded and/or captured enlisted men, slightly over 60 casualties in one action, out of 175. With

August 18’s casualties, this gives a 53% casualty rate.

Casualty records are never exact but with eight different cross references here, this is one that I

deem highly accurate. Thus, the “Iron-Hearted Regiment” preserves its moniker in this action from

a nearly forgotten battle in the dog days of August, 1864. They had gotten their name from taking

296 casualties (Official Records numbers) at the battle of Olustee, FL. on February 20, 1864, their

first major action.

Efforts are being made, however, by the Civil War Trust, to preserve the battlefield know as 2nd Deep

Bottom as I write.

See www.beyondthecrater.com John Reardon’s account for graphic descriptions of both days.

“August 18th [1864]2—Regiment is on picket. Five p. m., enemy charge our line. Some of our men are killed, some wounded or missing. Enemy followed our troops and are repulsed. We try to establish our pickets on the old line. Lieutenant Colonel Johnson of the 115th, commanding brigade. Blunders get the troops into an ambush where we lose men unnecessarily. Complaint is made to General Birney, commanding the division, that Johnson is intoxicated. He is immediately placed under arrest and relieved of command. At dark orders came to fall back which we did at midnight. Learn that my brother in the Second Corps is wounded seriously and sent to the hospital.” Reardon. Clark, James H. The iron hearted regiment, being an account of the battles, marches and gallant deeds performed by the 115th regiment N.Y. vols. Also a list of the dead and wounded, an account of hundreds of brave men shot on a score of hard fought fields of strife, a complete statement of Harper's Ferry surrender, sketches of the officers, a history of the flags and those who bore them, together with touching incidents, thrilling adventures, amusing scenes ... by James H. Clark, late First Lieutenant, Company H, 115th N.Y.V. Albany: J. Munsell, 1865. [ Lt. Clark says the regiment went into Deep Bottom with 175 and in three days were at 80. (p. 159) Subtracting 93 from 175 leaves 72 or so with some minor wounded remaining in the ranks. Nonetheless this study makes Lt. Clark’s numbers very accurate. ] Foote, Melville B. Diary, 1864 - 1865. Transcription only. Donated by Julia A. Foote. A narrative of his military record is here. [Foote points out that of 17 men in his E company, 12 of them became casualties at Deep Bottom.

Later in August, one of the non-casualties would die.]

STEENBURGH, JEREMIAH.—Age, 34 years. Enlisted,

August 12, 1862, at Ephratah, to serve three years; mustered

in as private, Co. E , August 18, 1862; captured in action, September

15, and paroled, September 16, 1862, at Harper's

Ferry, Va.; died, August 26, 1864, at hospital, Fort Monroe,

Va.
