LUTHERAN CHURCH Rev. Cassie McIntosh Overcash,
Pastor
OFFICE HOURS:
Monday —Thursday
9:00 AM — 1:00 PM GRACE
Dear people of God at Grace Lutheran Church , “All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need” Acts 4:32-35
At Church you have heard us talk a lot lately about Stewardship, you have heard people give Temple Talks about the ways they share their time in many ways at Grace, you’ve filled out a Time and Talent sheet so that you can share your gifts at Grace, and now in October is where we are going to talk about the part of Stewardship that is harder for us to talk about together, sharing our financial gifts.
I’m here to tell you that whether you give a little, a lot, or you practice tithing, your gift has an incredible impact on this church and the Thomasville community. Your gift feeds seventy people each Sunday, your gift supports CCM, your gift helps people in need. Your gift also, builds a foundation of faith for so many in the nursery, in Sunday School, and in worship. Your gift provides a place for the community to gather with Boy and Girl Scouts and the Open Arms Cancer Support group. Your gift does so much, and our congregation is blessed by it.
But if we are going to be honest and talk about money, I have to also say, we need your financial gifts. We need them because our building is aging and needs a new boiler, work on the roof, and some cosmetic repairs so that it can be a place where people can worship and gather comfortably. We need your gifts because we want to continue to build a faith foundation in the lives of young people by offering activities and programs for them. We need your gifts so that we can keep feeding our community.
The last Sunday in October, the 13th, we celebrate the Stewardship and Mission Sunday. We celebrate the mission we share as Grace Lutheran Church in Thomasville where we are: Following the example of Christ, growing together, and connecting with community because of God’s grace. So this month be praying about your gifts, the way you share your time and the way you share your resources with the church. Prayerfully think about what you might be able to give before Sunday before October 13th. You will receive letters, hear stories, and see bulletin inserts about our 2019 Stewardship Drive: Where is your treasure? These materials will also be available for review on our website. If you have questions about giving, I’m more than happy to talk to you.
God’s Peace
Pastor Cassie

STEWARDSHIP TEMPLE TALK
Last Spring our Organist and Choir Director gave the temple talk below about the ministry of music, as we kick-off our 2019 Stewardship campaign one of the things we are fundraising for is facility improvements, which include the purchase of a new organ. We hope that Ellen’s story and ministry of music at Grace will help you to think generously this year as we get ready for our appeal Sunday on October 13. On most Sunday mornings you will usually find me in the back of the church in the choir loft where I get to play the organ and work with our choir. Our choir is absolutely THE BEST to work with- they faithfully attend practice Wednesday nights. ( If you’d like to join us, please come on Wednesdays, 6:45. We would love to have you sing with us! ). Our choir members are so gracious about doing what I ask- such as changing their chairs and where they sit, sometimes changing which part they sing, sometimes the notes they sing, even the words- and they do all these things willingly. They are a wonderful group to work with and I enjoy the time we spend together. For me, music has always been an important part of my life- especially church music. I would like to share a little bit of my background with you, and how I came to be a church musician and a part of the music ministry here at Grace. When you first walk onto the campus of Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, you will see a large brick sign with the name Concordia College, along with the words, Soli Deo Gloria. Soli Deo Gloria, which means, To God alone be the glory, is the motto of this Lutheran college. That phrase, Soli Deo Gloria, has a special meaning to me and has stayed with me even though I graduated from Concordia some time ago. To me, it sums up my thoughts and feelings about being Lutheran and how I choose to worship God, especially through music. You see, I truly love to play and sing hymns in worship and I have many favorite hymns. To me, hymns can be joyous and uplifting- such as Earth and All Stars, contemplative- Were you There When They Crucified my Lord, comforting- Blessed Assurance. Soli Deo Gloria- to God alone be the glory. As I thought about being a part of the music ministry here at Grace, I thought about how church music, especially hymns, have played an important part of my life. I want to share with you a few of my personal experiences where hymns have had a very special meaning to me at some defining times of my life. I grew up on a dairy farm, just outside of Little Falls, MN. I am the 3rd of five children. We had a piano in our home, and for some unknown reason, I always felt drawn to play the piano, and I began to play the piano at an early age. Our family were members of First Lutheran in Little Falls, and we attended church regularly. Sunday school was at 9:15, church at 10:30. Some of my earliest memories of music were at church - I was absolutely fascinated by the sounds of the organ, and I loved to listen to all of the various voices singing those beautiful hymns. I may only have had a vague understanding about God and what church was all about at that age, but those hymns- they held my attention and found their way into my heart and soul. My mother said that after we got home from church and while she was preparing the noon meal, I would climb up on the piano bench and play the hymns we had sung at church that morning. Thus began my early love of hymns. Soli Deo Gloria- to God alone be the glory. Fast forward a bit. First Lutheran decided to add an 8:00 service to their Sunday schedule. I was asked to play the organ for this service. This 6th grader had a lot to learn about playing the organ at a church service. I persevered, and I got to play many beautiful hymns on Sunday mornings at First Lutheran. (continued)
I played at First Lutheran until I went off to college at Concordia. Soli Deo Gloria- to God alone be the glory. Fast forward some more. Ken and I were married at First Lutheran. As we were meeting with the Pastor to prepare for the wedding, we discussed the plans for the ceremony, including the music that we had selected. For the processional I had selected one of many of my favorite hymns, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty the King of Creation. Some of you may be familiar with that hymn. From the look on the pastor’s face, I could see that he was surprised at this rather unconventional choice. I explained that I wanted a hymn of praise at the service, sung by all, and that this particular hymn was up-lifting and joyous. “Hmm” was his comment, “It’s a good choice. It’s the first time I’ve ever had a hymn chosen for the processional at a wedding.” Soli Deo Gloria- to God alone be the glory.
Fast forward yet some more. Ken and I became parents to our second son, just before Christmas, 1987. He was born in a rural hospital in Grinnell, Iowa. It wasn’t too long before doctors determined something was wrong- and he was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. After many tests and diagnostics, doctors determined he was missing the right ventricle in his heart. Instead of 4 chambers in his heart, he had 3. The doctors explained the gravity of the situation, and as surgery got underway, Ken and I were lead to a small waiting room. I don’t know how long we were sitting in that waiting room when we faintly heard what we thought might be Christmas music. We stepped through the waiting room doors, into the hallway, and over to the railing. As we looked down, over the railing, we could see the hospital lobby several floors below. In the lobby was a church choir, and they were singing Joy to the World, followed by Go Tell it on the Mountain. As Ken and I stood there, huddled together at that railing, listening to those beautiful carols, I was reminded that it was late afternoon on Christmas Eve, and that soon we would celebrate the birth of Jesus, God’s son, born so many years ago. I was also clearly reminded that our young son, no matter what the outcome that afternoon, was in God’s hands. Our son celebrated his 31st this past December. Soli Deo Gloria- to God alone be the glory.
Today, I am a part of the ministry of music, here at Grace Lutheran. I play the organ and direct the choir. I still love to play and hear many of my favorite hymns as well as new favorites, and that phrase, Soli Deo Gloria, to God alone be the glory, still resonates with me as I go about choosing choir anthems or other music for our services. I am also a member of the worship and music committee, where one of our duties is to select the hymns for the services each Sunday. Hymns are a vital part of the worship service and they are thoughtfully selected to support the readings of the day, or to support a special theme. Soli Deo Gloria- to God alone be the glory.
I’d like to close with the words to one of many of my favorite hymns, a hymn we sang just weeks ago, Beautiful Savior. This hymn was also sung at the conclusion of every Concordia Concert Choir performance. Here are the words of the third verse: Beautiful Savior, lord of the nations, son of God and son of man. Glory and honor, praise adoration, now and forever more be thine.
Soli Deo Gloria.

Dear friends, Hurricane Dorian has hit with devastating force, causing major damage and a growing number of reported deaths in the Bahamas, and inundating the Carolinas with flooding and storm surge. Lutheran Disaster Response is communicating with the Florida-Bahamas Synod, the South Carolina Synod, the North Carolina Synod, Lutheran Services Carolinas and other partners, who are assessing the immediate needs and initiating a response. While the extent of the damage is not yet known, we will accompany impacted communities from immediate relief through long-term recovery. This is our commitment as a church. Please give to Lutheran Disaster Response today. Your gifts ensure that our church will be able to provide help and hope for those whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Dorian. Stay connected to the latest events and our response to this and other disasters through our Facebook page. Please join me in prayer and partnership, and help spread the word in your congregation. In Christ's service,
The Rev. Daniel Rift
Director, ELCA World Hunger and Lutheran Disaster Response Funding
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
Hurricane Dorian has hit with devastating force, leading to major
damage and a growing number of reported deaths in the Bahamas, and
threatening the Carolinas with dangerous winds and storm surge. In the
Bahamas, where the impact of the hurricane has been devastating,
Lutheran Disaster Response and the FloridaBahamas Synod are
collaborating to assess the immediate need for relief and recovery.
Lutheran Disaster Response is also in communication with the South Carolina Synod, the North Carolina Synod,
Lutheran Services Carolinas and other partners who are preparing to respond. With your support, Lutheran
Disaster Response can provide survivors of this hurricane and others like it with immediate relief and can
accompany them on the long road to recovery. Your gifts designated for “Hurricane response” will be used
entirely (100%) for direct response until it is complete. Together, we can support those whose lives have been
impacted by hurricanes.
