Your Help is needed for the Living Stations of the Cross

The youth of the Faith Formation Program will present the Living Stations of the Cross through the eyes of Mary on Tuesday April 16th at 7:00 pm in the church. In order for this to happen we will need actors, and actresses, narrators, and singers. We will practice on Sun-day March 31st at 4:00 pm, and April 7th from 2:30 pm until 4:00. We will meet in the Cafeteria and move into the church once mass has finished. All 6th – High School Students are welcome to participate in this event. GOD’S ACTIONS NOW

When Jews celebrate the Passover, they always tell the story of the Exodus in present terms, as if they them-selves experienced those events: when we were prisoners in Egypt; when God brought us out of slavery and through the waters of the sea. We would do well to follow their example and see the works of Jesus and his sacrifice as being in the present, as happening to us now. We be-lieve that Christ’s work, his teachings, and his sacrifice on the cross were not just for his followers in the past, but for all people at all times. When we think of this in our prayers, we become one in faith with that great cloud of witnesses, the saints. We have been striving through Lent to repent of our sins and failings, and to follow Jesus more closely. Today in the story of the woman caught in adultery, we see Jesus forgiving the woman, saving her from a horrible death, and urging her not to sin any more. This is new, and brings out something for which the law had not al-lowed—forgiveness. Of course one can sin no more if one is dead, caught in one’s sins forever. But Jesus introduces the concepts of forgiveness and reconciliation.

Cuando los judíos celebran la Pascua, ellos siempre cuentan la historia del Éxodo en términos presentes, co-mo si ellos mismos hubieran pasado por esa experiencia: cuando fuimos prisioneros en Egipto, cuando Dios nos liberó de la esclavitud e cruzamos por las aguas del mar. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Artesanos preparan alfombras de flores y plumas de Quetzal en Guatemala para las fiestas de esta sema-na santa. Grupos de fieles practican su papel de perso-naje judío o romano para los vía crucis en México, Texas, Chicago y tantos lugares más. Fraternidades penitenciales están preparándose espiritualmente para cargar con imágenes sagradas y pesadas por calles españolas. Muchos más están preparando sus maletas para irse a la playa o las montañas donde, probable-mente, nunca recordaran el nombre de Jesús. Estos últimos se perderán las liturgias más signifi-cativas de nuestra fe cristiana; ritos llenos de movi-miento desde afuera de la Iglesia hasta adentro. Están llenos de símbolos que nos llaman a la verdad de la existencia cristiana y humana: somos personas paradó-jicas. Comenzamos entre los hosannas del Domingo de Ramos, pasamos por las dolorosas imágenes del Vier-nes Santo y terminamos entre juegos de oscuridad, fue-go y agua en la Vigilia Pascual. Muchas veces honra-mos al Señor y tantas veces lo negamos, pero él nunca deja de llamarnos. En fin nos recuerda que la condi-ción humana es sagrada y profana a la vez.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Next weekend, many churches provide palms to be carried in the opening moments of the liturgy, as we gratefully recall Jesus’ entry into the holy city of Jeru-salem. The children who greeted him on that day used what was both handy and traditional, since palms were carried to inaugurate the joyful harvest feast of Suc-coth. To this day, faithful Jews are directed to take a beautiful palm branch, green and straight as possible, called a lulav, and bind it with three myrtle branches fifteen inches long, and two longer willow branches. At the end of the temple service, everyone carries the lulav, circling the sanctuary in a dance called the Hoshanot, singing hymns of joy. In other climates, Jews and Christians alike have had to make accommodations over the years. In Italy, everyone carries olive branches today, often brought from their own garden. In England, forsythia branches are preferred, a relative of the olive, sign of peace. Germans prefer pussywillows, and others look for flowering spring branches. In our part of the world, what do you think would be the best choice to express joy and welcome, and to remind us of the joy of Christ’s victory even as we prepare to commemorate his passion?

Saint Joseph’s HNS meets every 2nd Sunday of the month at 8:00 Mass and invites all church members to attend meetings immediately following Mass in the school cafeteria. Refreshments will be served!

Recently, Mrs. Becerra brought her third grade class to visit the food pantry. The pantry vol-unteers were happy to welcome the students and

appreciated their insightful questions. We thank the stu-dents for their donations of paper products and special thanks to the girl who noticed we needed canned fruit and gave us $1 from her allowance. All parishioners should be proud of the third graders at St Joseph's Academy!

PASTOR’S DESK—ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR

The story of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery is sometimes considered as a put-down of the scribes and Pharisees. While their motive for bringing the woman to Jesus was to test him, they were technically trying to uphold the law. But they were hoping to get Jesus to cause a scandal by refuting the law, or, if he upheld the law, the woman would be killed with Jesus’ approval. Jesus had a better idea. He shows that God’s justice is mercy and forgiveness. When he told them that the one without sin could be first to throw a stone, he knew that they all were sinners one way or another. And a sinner could not judge another sinner. He also knew that some-one whose sins were forgiven would be willing to for-give the woman. That’s what St. Paul means in the second reading when he says he did not have “any righteousness of my own based on the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ” (Philippians 3:9). He says he has given up the idea of making himself righteous (right with God) by keeping the laws of his people. Now he depends on his faith in Christ and Christ’s forgiveness, which was shown in his death and resurrection. He is even will-ing to follow Christ in suffering and eventually death, so that he too can share the Resurrection. Why did Paul come to this kind of faith? Because he had been for-given for persecuting Christians. And he had persecuted them, not because he was evil, but because he thought he was keeping the law. Jesus probably surprised the woman when he let her go. He was the only one who could have judged her, but he chose to forgive. Just as the woman was changed by the mercy of Christ, Paul too was affected by being forgiven by the One whom he was persecuting (Acts 9:4). So is keeping the law a bad thing? No, but the important thing is why we keep the law. We can do it like the Pharisees—keeping the law as a status symbol: “I’m too good (or too important) to break the law.”Or we can choose to follow Jesus’ way of love. Then we still keep the laws and commandments, only because they are ex-amples of how to love God and love each other. For we too have been forgiven by Jesus on the cross. As we approach Holy Week, let us remember how much Jesus has done for us.

La historia de Jesús y la mujer atrapada en el adulte-rio a veces se considera como un desprecio de los es-cribas y fariseos. Mientras que su motivo para llevar a la mujer a Jesús era ponerlo a prueba, técnicamente intentaban defender la ley. Pero esperaban que Jesús causara un escándalo al refutar la ley o, si él re-spetaba la ley, la mujer sería asesinada con la apro-bación de Jesús. Jesús tuvo una mejor idea. Él mues-tra que la justicia de Dios es misericordia y perdón. Cuando les dijo que el que estaba sin pecado podía ser el primero en arrojar una piedra, sabía que todos ellos eran pecadores de una manera u otra. Y un pe-cador no podía juzgar a otro pecador. También sabía que alguien cuyos pecados fueron perdonados estaría dispuesto a perdonar a la mujer. Eso es lo que San Pablo quiere decir en la segunda lectura cuando dice que no tenía "ninguna justicia propia basada en la ley, sino en la fe en Cristo" (Filipenses 3: 9). Él dice que ha renunciado a la idea de hacerse justo (correcto con Dios) al guardar las leyes de su pueblo. Ahora depende de su fe en Cristo y del perdón de Cristo, que se mostró en su muerte y resurrección. Incluso está dispuesto a se-guir a Cristo en el sufrimiento y, finalmente, en la muerte, para que él también pueda compartir la Resurrección. ¿Por qué vino Pablo a esta clase de fe? Porque le habían perdonado por perseguir a los cris-tianos. Y los había perseguido, no porque era malo, sino porque pensaba que estaba cumpliendo la ley. Jesús probablemente sorprendió a la mujer cuando la dejó ir. Él era el único que podría haberla juzgado, pero eligió perdonar. Así como la mujer fue cambiada por la misericordia de Cristo, Pablo también fue afectado al ser perdonado por Aquel a quien estaba persiguiendo (Hechos 9: 4). Entonces, ¿mantener la ley es algo malo? No, pero lo importante es por qué guardamos la ley. Podemos ha-cerlo como los fariseos, manteniendo la ley como un símbolo de estatus: "Soy demasiado bueno (o dema-siado importante) para violar la ley". O podemos elegir seguir el camino del amor de Jesús. Entonces todavía guardamos las leyes y los mandamientos, solo porque son ejemplos de cómo amar a Dios y amarnos unos a otros. Porque nosotros también hemos sido perdonados por Jesús en la cruz. Al acercarnos a la Semana Santa, recordemos lo mucho que Jesús ha hecho por nosotros.
