THE FOOTBALL BROADCAST TEAMVeteran Oregon sportscaster Jerry Allen, now in

his 22nd year as the Ducks’ popular radio play-by-play voice, is joined by radio analyst Mike Jorgensen for his 19th season.

In addition to Oregon Sports Network program-ming, Jerry Allen can be heard each weekday morn-ing on KUGN 590 in Eugene.

A former Oregon quarterback, Mike Jorgensen continues to be actively involved in the Ducks foot-ball program.

Jay Allen begins his third season as sideline ana-lyst for the radio network.

OSN FOOTBALL RADIO NETWORK The Oregon Sports Network begins its 18th sea-

son of operation, continuing to broadcast all Univer-sity of Oregon football, men’s and women’s basket-ball contests and coaches shows exclusively along its state-wide affi liate network.

Since its inception in 1987, as a means to pro-mote all activities within the athletic department, the Oregon Sports Network has been known as one of the nation’s pioneer in-house radio and television networks on the collegiate scene. This network airs over 90 radio and television broadcasts per year.

The cornerstones of the Oregon Sports Network are KUGN 590 in Eugene/Springfi eld and KXL 750 and 95.5 The Game in Portland. KUGN has been the Eugene broadcast partner for the last 10 years, while KXL has been part of the network since its incep-tion.

OSN FOOTBALL TELEVISION NETWORKAll Oregon football games will be televised tape

delayed over the Oregon Sports Network, spear-headed by Eugene’s KEZI (9) in the southern Willa-mette Valley, KDRV-TV (12) in Medford, KDKF-TV (31) in Klamath Falls as well as Comcast SportsNet (37) throughout the state of Oregon.

Senior associate athletic director Joe Giansante handles the play-by-play duties for Oregon Sports Network TV programming, while former Oregon de-fensive back and 13-year NFL veteran Anthony New-man returns for a sixth year as an analyst for the TV network.

    UNIVERSITY OF OREGON FOOTBALL36

Heading into the 113th year of college football in Eugene, the Oregon Ducks are looking to make the jump from a perennial winning program and Top 25 con-tender to an annual participant in BCS Bowl and national title conversations. Fresh off a season that saw UO soar as high as No. 2 in the land behind Heisman Trophy candidate Dennis Dixon and NFL fi rst-rounder Jonathan Stewart, and culminated with a record-set-ting Sun Bowl victory over South Florida, the bar has been permanently raised for all who follow ready to don the Thunder Green and Lightning Yellow. With the departure of Dixon, Stewart and seven other key starters from a season ago, including fellow NFL draft pick Geoff Schwartz (OL) and NFL free agent hopefuls David Faae-teetee (DL) and Cameron Colvin (WR), the 2008 edition of Oregon football is an exciting mix of key veterans, young playmakers and a highly touted recruiting class. All will be counted on to contribute if the Ducks are to chase BCS glory and contend in one of the premier con-ferences in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Oregon’s schedule in 2007 ranked as the 13th toughest in the FBS and most diffi cult among Pac-10 schools, and this season’s slate looks to be even more challenging. Among the Ducks’ 12 opponents, seven are bowl teams from a year ago in Purdue (Sept. 13), Boise State (Sept. 20), USC (Oct. 4), UCLA (Oct. 11), Arizona State (Oct. 25), Cal (Nov. 1) and Oregon State (Nov. 29). Of those sides, only the Bron-cos and Bruins are forced to face UO at Autzen Stadium. And unlike most seasons, the Ducks won’t have any time to ramp up heading into league play as they open the 2008 campaign at home against Northwest rival Washington

(Aug. 30). Continued dominance at Autzen will be a must in ‘08, with the Ducks also hosting Utah State (Sept. 6), Stanford (Nov. 8) and Ari-zona (Nov. 15).

COACHESOther than Mike Bellotti’s staff , among Pac-10 members, only USC’s coaching roster returns fully intact from a season ago. Oregon’s nine position coaches total more than 100 years of experience mentoring student-athletes in Eugene led by Gary Campbell (running backs, 25 years), Steve Greatwood (associate head coach/off ensive line, 23 years) and Don Pellum (assistant head coach/linebackers, 20 years).

QUARTERBACKSNot unlike a year ago, the hottest topic during the off season, from a media and fan stand-point, has been Oregon’s quarterback posi-tion. The diff erence between last year and this is the experience of the players involved in the discussion. Heading into fall camp in 2007, the Ducks had a pair of seniors battling for the starting spot. And the winner of that duel, Dennis Dixon, ended up redefi ning what is expected of a player who lines up behind center at Oregon. When camp breaks in 2008, the depth chart will likely show a pair of red-shirt sophomores, a true sophomore and two true freshmen. What order will they stack up in? That’s the $64,000 question. Last year, when Dixon was lost for the sea-son with four games to play, Nate Costa would have been summoned out of his redshirt had the sophomore not suff ered his own year-end-ing knee injury in October. That confi dence in Costa, who is expected to be fully recovered by August 1, seems to indicate he is the quar-

terback to beat. Costa saw the fi eld twice in 2006, leading the Ducks on a nine play, 97-yard touchdown drive in his collegiate debut against Portland State, and orchestrating a 57-yard drive down to USC’s 3-yard line before time expired at the L.A. Coliseum. With Costa limited to non-contact drills during spring practice, fellow redshirt soph-omore Justin Roper saw the bulk of the fi rst team snaps and performed well in the Spring Game. Roper, who rose from fi fth to fi rst on the depth chart last year due to a rash of inju-ries, has the most Division I game experience among the QBs, including a stellar four-touch-down performance in Oregon’s 2007 Sun Bowl victory. But the starting quarterback of Oregon’s most recent game will have to show signifi cant improvement and consistency dur-ing fall camp to be handed the ball for UO’s next - the season and Pac-10 opener against the Huskies. Joining the QB fray this fall is junior college transfer Jeremiah Masoli, fresh off a rookie campaign that saw him lead City College of San Francisco to a junior college national title. Masoli, who had his pick of more than one big time college football program after amassing over 4,000 yards of total off ense and 41 touchdowns (11 rushing), chose to join a deeper competition with the Ducks. A 6-foot, 205-pound spread specialist who completed 61.3 percent of his passes at CCSF, Masoli en-ters camp having taken more post high school snaps than anyone else on the team. Rounding out the Duck QBs is a pair of true freshmen in Chris Harper and Darron Thomas. But unlike most players heading into their fi rst

Stalwart Defense, Emerging Offense Keys to Success in 2008Oregon looks to build on last year’s one-sided bowl victory and another top-25 fi nish.

    Nate Costa

With a diffi cult road slate in ‘08, the Ducks must take care of business at home.

    2008 MEDIA GUIDE 37

college season, the two prized recruits will have a full spring and summer under their belts. Thomas enrolled at the university in Jan-uary following early graduation from Aldine High School in Houston, and Harper arrived from Wichita’s (Kan.) Northwest High in March. Both saw signifi cant playing time in the Spring Game with Harper leading the Green side in rushing with 67 yards on 14 carries.

OFFENSIVE LINEMuch of the credit for Oregon’s record rushing total in 2007 goes to the men in the trenches on the off ensive line, a unit that returns a trio of senior returning starters in All-America cen-ter Max Unger, guard Mark Lewis and tackle Fenuki Tupou. Unger, a potential fi rst round NFL draft pick next spring, is arguably the best pass blocker among Pac-10 snappers. Both he and Tupou were selected to the Outland Tro-phy preseason watch list. Fellow seniors Jeff Kendall, who is penciled in at left guard, and Jacob Hucko, likely the new starter at right tackle, give the Ducks one of their most experienced lines in team his-tory. Versatile sophomores Jordan Holmes and C.E. Kaiser at left tackle and guard, respective-ly, will also be counted on to play signifi cant snaps in Oregon’s speed-laden spread attack. On the right side, senior guard Jon Teague is the only veteran among the reserves. Soph-omore tackle Bo Thran (one appearance in 2007) could be a key contributor if he is able to put past injuries aside.

RUNNING BACKSJonathan Stewart’s announcement to forgo his senior season to enter the NFL Draft raised immediate concerns about the running back position for the Ducks. While replacing the school’s all-time single-season rushing leader

won’t be easy, any feeling of dread lessened a bit when junior college transfer LeGarrette Blount put on the pads for the fi rst time upon arriving in Eugene last spring. At a stout 6-2 and 229 pounds, Blount demonstrated a pow-er style and tackle-breaking ability that should be an excellent complement to Oregon’s stable of speedy tailbacks. Blount completed spring drills with a Spring Game-high 68 yards on just fi ve carries, eliciting several audible gasps from the 14,000-plus in attendance. Jeremiah Johnson is essentially the in-cumbent starter after being billed as “1B” to Stewart’s “1A” on the UO depth chart the past two seasons. Johnson’s elusiveness on interior runs and ability to dart around the edge can give opposing defensive coordinators fi ts. And that’s not even taking into account his occa-sional role as an extra receiver. Despite a sea-son-ending knee injury in the sixth game of the year in 2007, Johnson still managed to fi n-ish third on the team with fi ve rushing touch-downs and sported a lofty average of 6.4 yards per carry (54-344). Junior Andre Crenshaw picked up the slack after Johnson went down and is a capable op-tion again this season. Included on his resume is a 113-yard, two-touchdown rushing eff ort at Washington in 2007. Remene Alston, Jr., a redshirt sophomore, will also have an opportunity to be a signifi -cant part of UO’s off ensive backfi eld and gives the Ducks a diff erent look as a small power-ful runner. After taking over for Blount in the Spring Game, Alston carried fi ve times for 56 yards. Texas prep standout LaMichael James will add to the backfi eld competition upon his ar-rival in camp.

WIDE RECEIVERSMuch like the quarterback position, the devel-opment of Oregon’s wide receiver corps will go a long way in determining the team’s level of success in 2008. Senior Jaison Williams can be a dominant threat on the outside when he secures the football, but the Ducks will need another playmaker or two to emerge. One candidate is sophomore transfer Ja-mere Holland, who can fl y and has outstand-ing strength for his 6-1, 188-pound frame. True sophomore Jeff Maehl only has three games of experience at the position after converting from safety late last season, but he displayed an immediate aptitude in the slot. Fellow true sophomore and inside receiver Aaron Pfl ugrad quickly became an Autzen Stadium favorite in his rookie campaign after injuries forced him out of a potential redshirt year three games into last season. His smart route-running could earn him ample playing time in ‘08. Senior Terence Scott, another who was pulled out of redshirt status last season, was dinged up for the bulk of his fi ve appearances as he remains a bit of an unknown quantity.

Ellis Krout, a 6-4 junior college transfer will have a chance to move up the depth chart in fall camp, as will speedy redshirt freshman El-vis Akpla and true frosh Garrett Embry. The ar-rival of 6-7 freshman Dion Jordan signals UO’s continued run of recruiting tall, athletic receiv-ers.

TIGHT ENDSLast season, the Ducks disproved the theory that tight ends are under utilized as receiv-ing threats in the spread off ense, as exempli-fi ed by the fact that Ed Dickson was the team’s second-leading receiver. The junior All-Pac-10 candidate started to come into his own a year ago and was one of two players to catch at least one pass in all 13 contests. True sophomore Malachi Lewis made the switch from running back to tight end during the ‘07 fall camp and should continue to devel-op at the position with a full season of games under his belt. Like Lewis, senior Matt Larkin played in ev-ery game last season and was a factor on spe-cial teams. Larkin’s 29 career games played are the third most among returners on off ense. Surehanded redshirt freshman David Paulson and 6-4 true freshman Mychal Rivera round out the depth chart at tight end.

DEFENSIVE LINEAs is the case with Oregon’s entire defense, the line is stocked with veterans, led by senior sec-ond team All-American Nick Reed. The nation’s third-leading tackler for loss and Pac-10 sacks leader resumes his role at end opposite junior Will Tukuafu. Tukuafu made a seamless transition from the junior college ranks last year to start 11 times as part of the nation’s top defense in terms of tackles for loss, racking up 8.5 TFLs

and 4.5 sacks of his own. In reserve, the Ducks are well positioned on the perimeter with versatile senior Mike Speed, who started one game at tackle last year, and 6-7 sophomore Brandon Bair. A pair of redshirt freshmen in Dominic Glover and Terrell Turner - a converted linebacker - could also make an impact. Despite losing both starting tackles to grad-uation, the interior appears to be in capable hands with fi fth-year seniors Cole Linehan and Ra’Shon “Sonny” Harris ready to make their marks. Linehan is no stranger to the position, having started fi ve games at tackle as a junior, and Harris appears primed to fi nally reach his potential. Pushing the senior duo will be impressive true sophomore Tonio Celotto and highly touted junior college recruit Justin Thompson. Junior Simi Toeaina, like Harris a 300-pounder, and transfer Blake Ferras will also fi gure in the mix.

LINEBACKERSAlthough Oregon’s stable of linebackers took a hit with the loss of inspirational captain A.J. Tuitele to graduation, there may end up being more buzz surrounding this group of ‘back-ers than the Ducks have experienced over the past few years. Veteran starters Jerome Boyd and John Ba-con are back for their senior years at SAM and MIKE, respectively, and returning letterwinner Spencer Paysinger, a sophomore, takes over Tuitele’s spot at WILL. Boyd, the team’s fourth-leading tackler from a year ago (79 total), ranked second in tackles for a loss (11.0). A hy-per-athletic presence, Boyd can match up with nearly every type of off ensive skill player and has shown consistent ability to make plays all over the fi eld. injury, is expected back at full health, and Gar-rett adds experience (25 games in two sea-sons) and toughness on the weak side. Pressing the vets will be true sophomore Casey Matthews, a smooth, intelligent middle linebacker who briefl y took over a starting spot last year before suff ering an injury of his own. Blue collar junior Riley Showalter is slated to be a primary backup, but a talented trio of redshirt freshmen in Eddie Pleasant, Terrance Pritchett and Brandon Hanna will also press for time. Sophomore Kenny Rowe, a pass rushing specialist who ranked second on team with 5.0 sacks a year ago, began making the tran-sition from end to MIKE this past spring, but will likely see ample time on the line again this season.

SECONDARYThe biggest reason many onlookers feel that Oregon will have one of the nation’s top de-fenses in 2008 is undoubtedly its “dream team” secondary. Three of the group’s starters, junior corners Jairus Byrd and Walter Thurmond III, and senior rover Patrick Chung, are on the watch lists for the Bednarik (national defen-sive player of the year) and Jim Thorpe awards (nation’s top defensive back). Chung, who fl irted with entering the NFL Draft following his junior year, is also on the watch list for the Bronco Nagurski Trophy, which is awarded to the best defensive player in college football. The trio combined for 284 tackles a year ago, led by Chung’s 117. Thurmond’s 75 solo stops were tops among Ducks, and he also boasted fi ve interceptions among his team-high 18 pass breakups. Byrd led the squad with seven INTs and three fumble recoveries (tie). The new kid on the block, in terms of start-ing duties, is likely to be junior T.J. Ward at free safety. Ward, a standout on special teams in ‘07, will be challenged by redshirt freshman

Javes Lewis and junior Titus Jackson. The next wave of secondary talent starts with a pair of true sophomore corners in Tal-madge Jackson III and Anthony Gildon. They will have to contend with redshirt junior Willie Glasper, the owner of one career start among his 26 career games played. In reserve at rover is redshirt sophomore Marvin Johnson. Todd Doxey, the redshirt freshman who died in a river incident on July 13, would have also challenged for time.

SPECIAL TEAMSWhat a diff erence a year makes. Thanks in large part to the return of Tom Osborne to the UO coaching staff as special teams coordinator, the Ducks transformed what had been a weakness in 2006 into a strength last season. Every area of special teams - kicking, punting, returning and coverage showed marked improvement a year ago, and that trend is only likely to continue. Senior placekicker Matt Evensen, a Lou Gro-za Award semifi nalist in 2007, is coming off his best year in Eugene. Evensen hit on 80 percent of his fi eld goal attempts as a junior and did not miss a single extra point in 52 tries. His ability to pin the opposition deep on kickoff s (17 touchbacks in ‘07) will continue to be criti-cal in the unit’s success. Another senior, former transfer Josh Syria, returns as the incumbent punter, a position he solidifi ed after the Ducks’ nightmarish struggles in 2006. Of his 71 punts last season - the fi fth most by a punter in school history - 26 were downed inside of 20 yards. His 41.7 average tied for eighth on the UO single sea-son list, but his quick release and hang time is what set him apart. The Ducks lose one of the top kickoff return-ers in the country in Jonathan Stewart, but his absence clears the way for shifty Andre Cren-shaw and burner Jamere Holland to make their respective marks on special teams. LeGarrette Blount, a Reuben Droughns clone from a physical standpoint, could also work into the mix. Holland and Jeff Maehl lead a list of poten-tial punt returners to replace graduated senior Andiel Brown. Aaron Pfl ugrad’s sure hands al-ways make him an option, and Jairus Byrd and Patrick Chung also have experience. Oregon has a deep special teams pool to employ - Maehl, T.J. Ward, Marvin Johnson, Talmadge Jackson III, Willie Glasper, Spencer Paysinger and Riley Showalter are among the team’s best veterans on special teams.

DUCKS VS. THE TOP 25 … Although Mike Bellotti-coached teams have accumulated a modest record (24-23) against top 25-ranked opponents, the Ducks are 12-8 in Autzen Sta-dium since 1995 and 5-2 vs. the top 10 at home during that same span. Oregon faced three top 10 (AP) teams at home in 2007 and went 2-1 with both wins coming consecutively over then-No. 9 USC and then-No. 6 Arizona State.

ON THE DUCK WALK … For the third straight year, Oregon will feature custom Nike uniforms made up of yellow, green, black and white jer-seys and pants, along with helmets in green, white and yellow. The most recent redesign came in 2006 and features a refl ective diamond plate design on the shoulder pads and thighs as well as numerals in a custom “Bellotti Bold” font. The current kits are 28% lighter than previ-ous uniforms when dry and 34% lighter under wet conditions. With nearly 400 combinations at their disposal, the Ducks wore a diff erent one in every game during the 2007 season.

THE STREAK GOES ON … SR C Max Ungerand SR ROV Patrick Chung come into their fi nal season having started every game the Ducks have played during their respective careers, a span of 38 games. Unger’s 13 starts in 2006 and 12 in 2005 came at left tackle.

CENTURY MARK PROVES KEY … The Ducks are 12-4 since the start of 2006 when they have a 100-yard rusher. While the bulk of those games were courtesy of departed tailback Jonathan Stewart, SR RB Jeremiah Johnsonand JR RB Andre Crenshaw also have 100-yard eff orts on their resumes. In the ten other games, UO is 4-6.

CONSECUTIVE SELLOUTS … Oregon sold out all six home games in ‘07, running its streak to 55 straight dating back to the 1999 season. Included in last season’s capacity crowds were the three largest ever at Autzen Stadium when the Ducks drew 59,273 for Cal on Sept. 29, 59,277 for USC on Oct. 27, and 59,379 for ASU Nov. 3. The last game that fell short of a sellout was vs. Nevada (41,374) on Sept. 18, 1999. USC came to Autzen Stadium the following week, with the Ducks prevailing in a triple-overtime thriller.

NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS … The Ducks have amassed a 27-1 record in non-confer-ence games in Autzen Stadium during Mike Bellotti’s head coaching tenure. Their lone home loss during that span was dealt by Indi-ana (30-24) to open the 2004 season. Overall, Oregon has accumulated a 39-5 non-league slate in Bellotti’s 13 years at the helm.

RECORD TICKET SALES … Oregon established a record for season-ticket sales for the 11th year in a row. The Ducks had sold 43,954 tickets on a season basis before issuing a limited number of single seat season tickets in June, exceeding the 2007 mark of 43,242 season tickets.

2008 NETWORK TELECASTS … At least four of Oregon’s 12 regular season contests will be available for viewing nationally, starting with the season opener at home against Washing-ton (FSN, 7 p.m. PT) on Aug. 30. In addition, the game at Purdue (12:30 PT) on Sept. 13 will be carried live on ABC, the Oct. 4 game at USC (5 p.m.) will air live on ESPN or ABC, and the Civil War Nov. 29 at Oregon State (4 p.m.) is tabbed for the Versus network. Other Oregon games could be selected to be televised as the season progresses.
