Dear Friends,
This Wednesday we will all begin our 40 days of Lent with acts of prayer, penance, fasting and good works. As you know, each of us are called to do something “special and different” during these holy days. I encourage you to participate in the many Lenten activities being sponsored by our parish. Let’s all pray for each other – that these days may truly transform us into the image of Jesus. This Thursday, Catholic Migration Office of the Diocese will offer a presentation to all of our immigrants and answer as many questions as possible. There’s a lot of confusion and misunderstanding taking place - and above all: fear. This meeting will help to inform and support the many immigrants here in our parish. The parish priests and entire staff of Saint Bartholomew stand ready to assist all those in need and accompany those who are fearful. This is one of many future meetings we will have here in the parish. The meeting will be in English and Spanish.

Este miércoles comenzaremos nuestros 40 días de Cuaresma con actos de oración, penitencia, ayuno y buenas obras. Como ustedes saben, cada uno de nosotros está llamado a hacer algo "especial y diferente" durante estos días santos. Les animo a participar en las muchas actividades de Cuaresma en nuestra parroquia. Vamos a orar los unos por los otros - para que en estos días podamos transformarnos verdaderamente en la imagen de Jesús.
Este jueves, la Oficina Católica de Migración
de la Diócesis ofrecerá una presentación a todos nuestros inmigrantes y responderá a tantas preguntas como sea posible. Hay mucha confusión y malentendidos y sobre todo: miedo. Esta reunión ayudará a informar y apoyar a los muchos inmigrantes aquí en nuestra parroquia. Los sacerdotes y todo el personal de San Bartolomé están dispuestos a ayudar a todos los necesitados y a acompañar a los que tienen miedo. Esta es una de las muchas reuniones futuras que tendremos aquí en la parroquia. La reunión será en inglés y español.
LENTEN REGULATIONS 2017 In order to assist the faithful of the Diocese of Brooklyn to take full advantage of the Lenten season, our Bishop, Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, would like to remind us of the following: ABSTINENCE – All the faithful who have reached 14 years of age are required to abstain totally from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. FASTING – All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This practice involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken on two other occasions during the day. EASTER DUTY – After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time of the year. By special indult, in the United States, the time period for fulfilling this precept has been extended to include the period beginning the First Sunday of Lent (Mar 5, 2017) to Trinity Sunday (June 11, 2017).
REGULACIONES DE CUARESMA 2017 Para ayudar a los fieles de la Diócesis de Brooklyn para sacar el máximo provecho de la temporada de Cuaresma, nuestro Obispo, Monseñor Nicholas DiMarzio, quisiera recordarnos lo siguiente: ABSTINENCIA - Todos los fieles que han alcanzado los 14 años de edad están obligados a abstenerse totalmente de comer carne el Miércoles de Ceniza y los viernes de Cuaresma. AYUNO - Todos los fieles entre las edades de 18 y 59 años están obligados a ayunar el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. Esta práctica consiste en limitarnos a una sola comida completa y evitar los alimentos entre comidas. Un alimento ligero también puede ser tomado en otras dos ocasiones durante el día. DEBERES PASCUALES - Después de recibir el sacramento de la Santísima Eucaristía, todos los fieles deben recibir la Sagrada Comunión al menos una vez al año. Este precepto debe cumplirse durante la temporada de Pascua, a no ser por una buena razón que se cumpla en otro momento del año. Por razón especial, en los Estados Unidos, el plazo para el cumplimiento de este precepto se ha extendido iniciando el primer domingo de Cuaresma (5 de Marzo, 2017) hasta la fiesta de la Santísima Trinidad (11 de Junio de 2017).

ADULT CONFIRMATION We will offer a 5 week course to adults
(18 and over) who would like to receive the sacrament of confirmation on
Pentecost Sunday – June 4, 2017. Here’s what will be required: We will need an updated (new) copy of your certificate of baptism You need to be a registered parishioner of St. Bartholomew and attend mass every Sunday You will need to attend all 5 classes As you know, if you are not married in the church (married civilly) or living in a relationship you cannot receive any sacrament until the issue is resolved. For more information and for registration come to a brief meeting on Wednesday, April 19 at 6:30p.m. in Heafey Hall (Ithaca Street). If you have your certificate of baptism bring it with you to the meeting. This will be your last opportunity to register! If you can’t make this meeting, please call the rectory at 718-424-5400.
