Lesson 11‐3 ‐ Solving Systems by Adding or Subtracting

Elimination Method: uses to solve a system of linear equations by eliminating one variable by adding or subtracting the two equations of the systems to obtain a single equation in one variable.

STEPS:1. Add  the equations to eliminate one variable

2. Solve the resulting equation for the other variable

3. Substitute the value into either original equation to find the value of the eliminated variable.

Sometimes, neither variable can be eliminated when you simply add or subtract, therefore, you need to use a method of multiplying by a constant prior to adding or subtracting.

STEPS:1. Decide which variable to eliminate

2. Multiply one equation by a constant to so that adding or subtracting will eliminate that variable

3. Solve the system using the elimination method
