Radio stations are already playing Christmas music. Big-box retailers set up holi-day displays before Hallow-een. So in getting with the spirit of starting things early, today you’ll find a guide to holiday events in Southern Indiana.

At least our information is practical.

From HolidayFest in New Albany to Christmas

parades in Charlestown and Jeffersonville to flipping the switch on holiday lights across the region, there’s no doubt Southern Indiana is a cheerful place during the winter.

Downtown revivals in New Albany and Jefferson-ville feature a more robust landscape for shopping locally. Both cities will host retail-related events: New Albany’s Jingle Walk and Jeffersonville’s Shop, Dine & Skate.

Clarksville is even offering to take the kids off your hands for a few hours for distraction-free shop-ping, or a date night. Who doesn’t get bitten with the romance bug with snow falling and colorful lights illuminating lover’s lane?

You can even burn a few calories while shopping. Jeffersonville’s Ice Rink opens Nov. 28. On Nov. 29, you can catch a condensed performance of the Lou-isville Skating Academy’s “The Nutcracker.”

Then strap on some skates for a little family fun. Did you know that according to the U.S. Figure Skating Association, you can burn between 250 and 810 calories an hour with recreational skating? You can read all about the health benefits of ice skating in December’s Fitness Source magazine. (Shameless plug).

So tack this issue of SoIn to the refrigerator. This is one early arrival you’ll want to keep handy.

LOUISVILLE — After over six years and more than 12,750 showings at its original home in the Ken-tuckyShow! Theatre at The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, KentuckyShow! has moved a few blocks down Museum Row on Main to its new home in the four-story Digital Theater at the Kentucky Sci-ence Center.

KentuckyShow!, a 30-minute production, is designed to take audiences on a journey through time and place in Kentucky. More than 70 hours of HD video were captured for the production, with the film crew travel-ing to over 187 locations and interviewing over 100 people throughout the state to obtain a true represen-tation of Kentucky: its people, history, culture, music and spirit.

The enter’s Digital Theater underwent a complete renovation in January 2014, reopening in February of the same year with all new digital capabilities and a

Precision White Digital Screen — the first of its kind in Kentucky.

The original KentuckyShow! opened in 1984 and ran for six years in downtown Louisville before moving to Bardstown, Kentucky, where it continued to run several more years.

The first 300 children receive a ticket for a prize that can be redeemed after the Lighting of the Christmas Tree. There is also a scavenger hunt with prizes for teenagers with registra-tion at the Bicentennial park at between 1 and 3:30 p.m. A chili cook-off with the local firehouses will also take place. Christmas trees and wreaths will be available for sale.

“Once,” winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical and winner of the 2013 grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, will play The Kentucky Center for a limited engagement from January 20-25.

“Once,” which was also named Best Musical by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle, Drama Desk, Drama League, Outer Critics Circle and Lucille Lortel Awards,is currently running on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.

The musical features the Academy Award-winning music and lyrics of glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, a book by award-winning Irish playwright & screenwriter, Enda Walsh (Penelope, Hunger, The New Electric Ballroom), direction by the acclaimed Scottish director of Black Watch, John Tiffany, movement by Steven Hoggett (Black Watch, American Idiot) and music supervision and orchestrations by Martin Lowe (Mamma Mia!).

“Once” is the celebrated new musical based on the Academy Award-winning film. It tells the story of an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant drawn together by their shared love of music. Over the course of one fateful week, their unexpected friend-ship and collaboration evolves into a powerful but complicated romance, heightened by the raw emotion of the songs they create together. Brought to the stage by an award-winning team of visionary artists and featuring an ensemble cast of gifted ac-tor/musicians, “Once” is a musical celebration of life and love: thrilling in its originality, daring in its honesty ... and unforget-table in every way.

NEW ALBANY — Under the direction of Joanna goldstein, professor of music at IU Southeast, the program will open with the “Over-ture To Don giovanni” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart followed by the “Concerto For Harp And Orchestra in E-Flat Major” by Rhinehold glière featuring IU Southeast harp instructor, Dr. Louisa Woodson. Following a brief intermission, the orchestra will conclude the concert with the “Car-mensuite No. 1” by georges Bizet, and the “Ride of the Valkyries” by Richard Wagner.

Louisa Ellis Woodson has been playing the harp since age nine. In May, 2008, she received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in harp from Manhattan School of Music in New York. She also holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Harp Performance from Indiana University, where she studied with Distinguished Professor Susann McDonald. Dr. Woodson has served as the Adjunct Professor of Harp at Baylor Univer-sity in Waco, Texas. In addition to maintaining a private harp studio, she is the former Principal Harpist with the Waco Symphony Orchestra. She is currently the harp instructor at Indiana Univer-sity Southeast.

Christmas Candlelight Tours will take place at the Historic John Work House at Historic Tunnel Mill, 3709 Tunnel Mill Road Charlestown, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 5-6 and 12.

The 1811 John Work House, a National Regis-ter of Historic Places site, will be decorated in a fashion appropriate to the early 19th century and illuminated with over 70 hand-dipped candles.

Costumed re-enactors will be in and around the house interpreting life in the historic period. Shop for unique historical items in the gift shop as well. There is no charge for the tours; however, a small donation for the restoration project is encouraged.

Cookies and hot drinks will be provided as long as they last. Off-and-on interpretive programs throughout the night will include live historical

tradition for more than three de-cades for thousands of residents and visitors. For its 34th year, the city’s annual celebration launch-ing the holiday season is expand-

ing and returning to Fourth Street, creating a four-block festi-val of lights set to music between the galt House and Fourth Street Live! This year’s theme is LOL — Lots Of Lights.

Light Up Louisville begins the day after Thanksgiving (Friday, Nov. 28), with the arrival of Santa Claus who will help illuminate downtown Louisville, followed by fireworks starting from Fourth and Main streets all the way to Fourth Street Live!

The big transformation is the addition of the 40 Nights of Lights component featuring a nightly light show set to music on Fourth Street. Along the cor-ridor, tree and street lights will be synchronized with the main music and light shows at Fourth Street Live! and the galt House Hotel. The nightly spectacle also includes light projections on buildings along Fourth Street.
