    DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY -Designing for a Client Students are rotated around the six technology modules

    over the course of the year (not necessarily in this order).

    Students consider that fast food need not beunhealthy or uncreative. They are encouraged toexplore and understand basic scientific principles ofcooking during practical lessons.

    Students investigate means of increasing andidentifying key nutrients required in the diet forextreme endurance events, like the Hawaii Ironmanrace.

    This project is aimed at developing knowledge ofplastics and how to accurately and effectively workwith them.

    Students will research and develop their knowledge ofphone and i-pod holders already on the market. Theywill also learn about the main types of plastic, andhow they vary from one another.

    After learning to draw in isometric, students producedesign ideas to meet a detailed specification. One will

    be developed, and used to cover a variety ofprocesses to produce a quality finished product.Students will be assessed on their understanding anduse, of materials and equipment, and on quality offinishing.

    Spring term:Zip it UpDesign and make a pop art inspired pencil case.

    Battle of the BandsForm your own band, design and make your own bandidentity and CD case

    During this Textiles project students will beintroduced to appliqu which will be incorporated intothe theme of Pop Art. Students will produce a pop artinspired pencil case, from initially choosing a clientgroup through to the finished product, using a varietyof production techniques in the process.

    Within this project students will create material thatwill promote a band of their own choice. Students willbe able to choose their own band, including name,genre and imagery. They will then learn manytechniques used in graphics including the use of fonts,layering, and using textures. The products they willproduce will be advertising for the band, imageryincluding logos, a CD case and a CD insert. They willuse the following software to complete all of these

    tasks and learn techniques for each differentsoftware, paint.net, 2D design and Publisher as well asusing some online resources.

    Students will learn how smart materials can have aneffect on how we develop different products. Theywill explore how previous products have been made in

    the past as well as similar products to the one theywill be making. Students will explore and experimentwith different ideas, materials and technologies. Theywill learn how to make use of analysis they carry outand how to develop their own ideas by using andunderstanding of others designing. They will alsohave to plan and organise their own activities tocomplete their own tasks to become effectivelearners.

    Students learn about a variety of metals, theirproperties and characteristics. How to successfully

    identify them and cut and shape them safely.Students look at what ferrous and non-ferrous is andhow it changes the properties? What a pure metaland alloy is and how are they identified. How ismetal finished treated and joined.
