GOTR is a 12 week program which meets twice a week for an hour after school at the lower
campus. The curriculum is fun and easy to follow for each meeting and includes topics such as
bullying, building self-esteem, making healthy choices, and teamwork. The goal of the program is to accomplish running a 5k, which you will train for during each meeting. The spring 5k will be in the Lake Park development in Indian Trail. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with our students and get volunteer hours at the same time. If you

Kimberly Woolard has been a Speech Language Pathologist for two years at Union Academy, but started out as a teacher. The person who influenced her career the most is her older sister. When she saw the positive impact she was making on her students, it inspired her to go into education. If Kimberly wasn’t a Speech Language Pathologist, she would want to do something related to books and literacy, like an author or a publishing editor.

MARIA KOONCE
MIDDLE SCHOOL SPANISH TEACHER
Maria Koonce is new to Union Academy, and joins us as our 5th and 7th grade Spanish teacher. She came to us after working at both Benton Heights and Cuthbertson. She served as an army wife for twenty-one years, living in Puerto Rico, Virginia, New York and Germany while in service. She gained education experience during her time in both Virginia Beach and while in Germany. If she had not chosen to go into education, she would be making the world more beautiful in the field of interior
decorating or as an artist (and I am sure would already be world famous). She credits her mother as her role model and her inspiration in becoming a teacher.

Scrip is a year-round fundraiser where you purchase gift cards. Union Academy purchases Scrip gift cards at
discount between 2-15%. Families buy the Scrip gift cards at face value—UA keeps the difference.
Retailers include: Wal-Mart, Food Lion, Lowe’s, Chick-Fil-A, Olive Garden, Gap, Amazon, and 100’s more.
Last year, total sales of $87,000 generated $4,376 of profit. Only 10% of UA families participated! Just imagine, if
only 200 families spend $110/month and our school earns an average of 5% on those purchases, we could make
$15,000 in one year!
How to Order Scrip Gift Cards:
1. Fill out the Scrip order form (found on the Scrip page on the UA website)
2. Attach payment to form and send with your child or drop off at either campus.
3. If cards are available immediately, they will be given to you that day or the next. If cards need to be ordered,
they will be available by the end of the week.
