ATTEMPTED ABDUCTION We have received another notification, this time from The Lady Eleanor Holles School, of

two further recent incidents in the White City area, one of attempted abduction and one of

sexual assault. Kew College has received no notification from the police about these al-

leged incidents, but you might like simply to be aware. Please do not alarm the children, or

yourselves. Training the children in sensible behaviour, which we do in school and know

that you also do at home, is the best way forward.

Year 4 Trip to the Verulamium Museum

On Monday the 15th October, Year 4 visited the Verulamium Museum in St Albans. We had a very successful trip with the children enjoying a visit “back in time” presented by an historian at the centre. The children handled many ancient artefacts, enjoyed dressing up as Romans and had lively discussions about living in Roman times. We visited the museum, the children following a fact finding trail, learning about the different aspects of Roman lifestyle. Following this we visited an excavated hypocaust, where the children explored how the Romans heated their homes. This supports the current project the children have been enjoying in class.

Year 5 Trip to the Tower of London

The Tower of London On the 17th October 2012, Year 5 were waiting in anticipation for the coach to arrive at the Tower of Lon-don. As soon as we stepped through the enormous gates, we knew this was going to be a brilliantly en-tertaining day. A man dressed in green arrived by our side and introduced himself as William Parr, Cath-erine Parr’s brother. He led us to a stretch of grass, and told us that we were standing where the Great Hall used to be, so naturally we all started staring around at the towering buildings, wondering if we were treading on the path that Henry VIII had trodden on.

We learnt so much information about Henry VIII, and some people even got to act out several parts for everyone else’s entertainment. Henry had six wives: Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Sey-mour, Anne of Cleves, Kathryn Howard and Katherine Parr. The rhyme goes like this: Divorced, beheaded, died Divorced, beheaded, survived. After our informative talk with William Parr, we grabbed some benches and gobbled down our lunches, desperate to move on to the next activity. 5L came back and hailed us with comments on how brilliant their adventure into the White Tower had been, which made us even more eager to climb up the winding open-air staircase and see for ourselves what it was like. As soon as we ascended the spiral staircase, we felt slightly dizzy at how high we had to climb to reach the top. Finally, though, we were breathlessly triumphant, standing at the top of the steep steps, looking down at the people who seemed tiny below. Some of us felt slightly nauseous at how far you would have to fall before you reached the ground. Inside, armour gleamed off every wall, and would you believe it, Henry VIII’s armour that he wore around his waist was 34 inches! There were lots of incredible displays, including the scene when there were model horses, which were the size that they would have been in real life! Henry VIII’s horse was jet black, and all the horses were striking a stunning pose. Either they were rearing, showing a hoof or standing proudly, noses to the sky. After a while (as we almost couldn’t tear our eyes away from the sleek stallions) we moved onto the drawing. We were handed paper and a pencil, and our tough task was to draw objects from around the room. There was a book with 914 pages! We were grouped together, and we went to see the Crown Jewels! It was absolutely stunning, and the jewels gleamed off all the walls. We clambered into the coach at the end of the day, exhausted but still knowing that this had been the best trip ever. By Isobel Blake, 5S

The Tower of London I was extremely excited when we were striding up to the menacing grey stone walls that were the Tower of London. Everyone was chatting animatedly and Joseph S said that he wanted to steal the crown jewels while others were scared that some descendants of Henry VIII might want to chop off their heads. Our guide was William Parr (Catherine Parr’s brother,) he refreshed our minds about Henry’s six wives. First came Catherine of Aragon, she had a girl called Mary she was divorced so that he could marry Anne Bo-leyn who gave him Elizabeth, she was later beheaded as she became nosy in running the country and she also had six fingers on her left hand. Jane Seymour was by far his favourite wife, because she gave him a son called Edward and also because she was quiet and minded her own business but tragically she died eleven days after her son’s birth. Next was Anne of Cleves who was terribly ugly and, six months after marriage, he divorced her. Catherine Howard was beheaded as she committed treason against the king, which means that she was having affairs with other men. Lastly there was Catherine Parr who was the first wife to outlive Henry. After lunch we went to see the armoury in the White Tower we saw lots of swords and axes and shields, in general, lots of weapons. We were allowed to put our heads inside helmets and look around with them on. Some people felt nervous as we were several hundred metres up! Henry VIII’s armour had a thirty four inch waist. On the top floor there was a HUGE dragon made out of armour with old coins and jewels in the middle. After seeing the place where Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard and also many, many others were exe-cuted, we saw the Crown Jewels, my favourite was the orb because it is diamond encrusted with the Un-ion Jack on top. In addition I also loved the AMAZING Imperial Crown with priceless diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds. I loved the Tower of London especially the Crown Jewels and I hope that the next Year Five will enjoy in as much as we did. By Lachie Stewart 5S
