Sales Management CommentsSales Management CommentsIt isn’t a secret that we are not completely original in our concept and that the origins of National Trust are inspired from the Red Angus breed’s Red Round Up. The value of creating an event with similar philosophies to the Red Round Up that would enhance the general value of Simmental nationally was a temptation we could not ignore. Thus, the National Trust was born.

So since I admit to “stealing” some concepts, why stop now? The man most responsible for the modern era success of the Red Round Up is without question, Bryan MacKenzie, MacKenzie Sales Management. Bryan’s opening comments in last year’s catalog queried an interesting comment referring to the timing of the event. He posed the question of, “How successful would this event be if it was held later in the fall?”. Interesting point to say the least. However, Bryan and I, and you, know very well it would defeat the purpose of events such as these to have them later in the season. They are of course designed to lead off the fall sale season in each respective breed to establish value to our products for the remainder of the aforementioned season. The sales within a timely proximity seem to be benefi tting the most such as the Farmfair Simmental sale two years ago and the “wild”, to say the least, Agribition sale last year. And of course the December sale run experiences a trickle down effect from November sale successes. One success leads to others. After all, the catch-phrase at National Trust has always been “For the Betterment of the Breed”. Mission accomplished so far.

I think to have an event such as the National Trust that creates so much positive energy is as important as ever with the challenging weather factors that have happened this year. We have a few less numbers in the “Trust” this year because of it, not because they weren’t selected but simply a few more than normal had to withdraw at the “11th hour”. Those who declined made every possible effort to be here but unfortunately had to make a decision that was responsible to themselves and to us. So again, other sales will benefi t because of National Trust, this time having these quality selections incorporated into them. To repeat, “For the Betterment of the Breed”.

Let’s send the focus to the elite that are consigned, from six different Canadian provices, and the cross-section of Fullblood and Pure-bred Simmental that fully represent the breed at it’s highest level to the rest of the beef business. What an honor it was a year ago to not only have the Canadian Simmental Association board of directors present but also several of the Canadian Angus Association directorate present. If you are from a breed other than Simmental and could only pick one other “out of breed” sale to go to, I would like to think it would be Simmental’s National Trust.

Still refl ecting back to one year ago, I have to thank all of you, from all of us at Transcon, for the lengthy standing ovation at the begin-ning of the sale. We are humbled and want you to share that ovation with yourselves as the success is only achieved when united. Right now, it only seems to be appropriate to say it one more time, “For the Betterment of the Breed”.

The 1st Bull Expo was also very well received last year and we will again have it on Saturday. We will have to wait until Sunday to fi nd out if any will be sold out of the Bull Expo in the sale. Congratulations to Barclay Smith and family for the sale of their bull last year to Prospect Hill Simmentals, Andrew Schuller and family and farm manager John Cartwright.

We invite you to join us at the event that benefi ts all of us, directly or indirectly, more than anything else that happens all year within the Simmental breed. We all have a responsibility to unite in our efforts to create, maintain and enhance the value of Simmental. We would be happy to visit with you about the National Trust sale consignments.

Appreciatively,

Jay Good

Due to calve around January 26, 2011.Polled Full Fleckvieh. Her pedigree is the story of present day fl eck genetics, from breeders to sale toppers. Wonder Woman’s dam, Precious Thing is every bit her name. She was the high seller at Ferme Gagnon’s sale in 2008. Precious Thing’s sire, R-Five Maltese, walks the pastures of the renowned Leedale Colony. Wonder Woman’s sire is Double Bar D Maestro, who was also a sale topper. Maestro sons and daughters have been well received and his semen has sold in very limited amounts. The defi nition of Maestro is “a master in any art” and this Maestro has done his job by siring this superior bred heifer! Wonder Woman is bred to our polled powerhouse sire, Champs Bravo. Bravo’s sire, Romano, has made his name well known at Virginia Ranch and Champ Simmentals. We now have our fi rst set of calves on the ground from him and WOW is only the beginning of what we can say. The Bravo calves are predictable. From birth weight, to ease of birth, to the structure of the calves with the natural muscle that they carry, leaves the fact that they could be polled as an ever important fringe benefi t. When she gives birth you’ll stand up and wish for an encore as you applaud and say “Bravo, Bravo”! Wonder Woman has it all. From her genetic pedigree of sire and dam, to her ability to grow from birth to weaning, and with the excellent balance of structure she carries, she is truly as unique as they come. This Wonder Woman doesn’t have an invisible airplane but she has used her Lasso of Truth on us and we have to confess that she was ultra sounded and is carrying a heifer calf. With the future of polled genetics playing an ever more important role in the fl eck world, she is the one to anchor your program. This is the animal that will take polled genetics to the next level.

During the winter she caught the eye of many visitors and then this summer she was Jay’s pick Wonika balances size with femininity and is backed by two of Virginia’s prolifi c cow families. Her maternal sister was a high seller in the 2008 Fleck Select. She is bred early to Anchor D Viper 103W, the lead off and a high selling bull at Skeel’s 2010 bull sale. You can fi nd her granddam in the pedigree of a good cow at Twin Chief and a cow and bull that worked pretty good for Mappin Simmentals. Willa was bred to stay home. But when Jay really wanted her, we relented and will bring her to town. Rezult has calved easy and left some good calves. The Rezult son she was exposed to is out of a good Red Doc cow. This smooth polled, dark red heifer is part of our 8E cow family which has produced many good breeding bulls both for commercial herds and purebred breeders. A full brother, T-Bone son is working very well for Virginia Ranch siring some good red bulls. 95W herself is very correct and well developed in structure. She moves extremely free and easy on good feet and legs. We are proud to offer her at the 3rd National Trust sale and are confi dent she will be a hard working producer for her new owner. Waverly’s dam was responsible for raising our 2009 High Selling Red Bull that sold to Janzen Ranching. Punch has a perfect udder with lots of milk and has solid feet, traits that Waverly seems to have inherited. Waverly is bred to the World Congress Grand Champion Wheatland Bull 468P (Hummer). In the 24 years that I have been raising Simmental cattle, I have never stated this before. “This could be the best bred heifer we’ve ever sold.” Jane West was born naturally thick and still has that natural thickness to this day. She never came off of pasture until September 6th to get ready for this sale. Her dam is a daughter of our famous Barbi cow and the reputable Westdrums Andrew sire. She will be Barbi’s replacement as our No. 1 donor cow. Her fi rst daughter was in the inaugural National Trust sale and sold to Double Bar D Simmentals for $11,500. Now let’s talk about Dad, “Champs Romano” – one of the most popular bulls at this time. Last fall 10 bred heifer daughters sold for an average of $6200 each. In the spring 11 bulls sold averaging $7550. Jane West comes from two very consistent proven parents, you can’t go wrong.

FULL FLECKVIEH. We have decided to share 30 doses of Champs Romano. Presently his semen is not offered on the open market thus we have decided to offer it at special events or sales at our discretion.

Mulan is a heifer that was destined for the National Trust from day one - it was at the inaugeral Trust sale where we purchased her dam as a heifer calf from the great Maxwell herd. Her dam stood out as the thickest, stoutest black heifer calf in the barn - Mulan is just like her, she is so full of power, but still looks like a lady! Not only does she look the part, but her pedigree is packed full of breed greats in the black industry. Powerstroke, Blacktop, Joker and twice to Preferred Stock - it all reads like Mulan will be a great one. We used Hustler on all our black heifers for the last 2 years as he is a can’t miss calving ease sire, but from all reports, his daughters have great udders with plenty of milk. These calves are maternal sisters to Rockstar, our herd bull who has done an awesome job for our program. 1722N is a proven herd bull maker, and we are sure, a matron maker as well: their momma’s power is coming through, and is very evident in these two powerhouse calves. We fl ushed 1722N to three different bulls, and she didn’t miss. That shows how powerful, consistent, and productive this cow is. 102X is one of the stoutest red heifer calves you will fi nd - full of natural muscling, yet stylish and very correct - and check out her weaning weight-900+ lbs. Sept.8. And being a Top Gun daughter, she will be the type to lay down and have those herd bulls, year after year. This is the only Top Gun hiefer born to date out of this fl ush. 733X will have some friends this fall, with her stylish chrome, her structural soundness, and her friendly attitude, she just might make a show prospect. Her sire, Knockout, gives her pedigree a little different twist-she would defi nitely contribute to a progressive black program. We really like the Knockout calves, as they are loose-made, deep-sided, hairy and moderate. Both of these calves are entered at Farmfair and Agribition.

18X has caught the eye of most who have seen her and we really like her too. She is very easy fl eshing and deep bodied with lots of rib. This is the third National Trust Sale and our third black heifer to sell. The fi rst sale Czech-Mate Livestock purchased our black heifer and last year Hay Valley and LaBatte Simmentals purchased the maternal sister to this heifer. This year we think we have another heifer that will attract some attention. Sales of this calibre you have to bring your best.

Multi polled Multi black. iIt is a pleasure to offer this outstanding black heifer for the National Trust sale. Our fi rst daughter from Superior and she is awful good. Tons of rib shape, lots of quarter and a big top with a real nice front end. This heifer was successfully shown in the Alberta Farmer Express summer show series. She was extremely competitive in the all breeds classes. If we were taking out a string this fall she would defi nitely be part of it. Only the second calf from 89T, but her fi rst was also solid as he was our second high selling bull in the spring. He also tested homo polled and homo black so a good chance this sweety is as well. Xstatic is a granddaughter of the 89A foundation female at Bar 15. Looking to add some longevity and maternal with some wow factor, check this sweet black heifer out.

35X is a beautiful heifer; very angular and stylish, moderate framed, broody and stout. She is out of a solid red, deep bodied, young cow that also raised a daughter for Robb Farms. 35X’s sire, Remington Prowler, was the Reserve Grand Champion bull at Agribition in 2009 and is owned by Sunstar Simmentals. Heifers like this don’t come along everyday. If you want to win red ribbons and raise herd bulls, this heifer will do both. These four heifers in the sale all came from different pastures and when we got them in the pen together we were pretty happy with their uniformity.

We used Malachi on a group of our commercial cows and his heifer calves are all dark coloured and will certainly be used as recipient cows. Soggy, deep and broody with a little extra length of body. This fullblood Ranger heifer is an excellent example of what her sire can produce. Her mother is a beautiful 2nd calver with a great udder and lots of milk as well as her grandmother. The intersting part is the lineage to her great grandmother, the original Henrietta cow. 24H was a many times 4-H champion female and in ‘03 raised the Jr Bull calf champion at Farm Fair. Her sire Usher 61U was our lead off bull in our ‘09 bull sale. We kept a semen interest, and we are sure glad we did. After seeing his calves we bred even more to him this year. This year we are offering a fl ush which supports our belief in the power and predictability of elite Fleckvieh genetics. The National Trust Sale has earned a reputation for showcasing the best of the Simmental breed, and Josie has earned this distinction. Her pedigree is time-trusted, and her progeny have gained international recognition. As a donor, she has fl ushed consistently well.

We cannot dismiss, given then present desire to produce polled animals, the value of proven horned genetics. Progeny from the mating chosen will undoubtedly provide a solid and sought after foundation for the purchaser.

To complement Josie’s traits and attributes, we have hand-picked from our semen bank, two straws of semen from the following renowned sires:- Great Guns Mollson 88S- Anchor “T” Rusty 59G- PRL Houston 005H- Klyber

Any one of them will sire exceptional calves with front-line marketability. The buyer can pick one of these sires, and will own the entire fl ush. Wells’ Crossing will not make this particular combination available ever again. The buyer will receive, if requested, a letter to this effect. Alternatively, the buyer may choose to use semen from his or her own semen bank. In either case, the buyer will own the entire fl ush. We guarantee 6 embryos, no cap.

For our fi rst consignment to the National Trust, Ferme Gagnon Inc is offering these untouchable Fleckvieh genetics. No you aren’t dreaming. You have the possibility to own some embryos of our best cow: FGAF Barbarella 839L. I will bet that this is one of the most decorated cows on the show circuit in the East of Canada of all time. Just to give you an example, this fall she was named Supreme Champion female at the National show in Nova Scotia at 10 years of age!!! Beside the ribbons, you have a functional cow that gives results. You can fi nd her daughter, FGAF Barbs Paint 315S at Buschbeck Farms. They sold her son for $12 500 to Semex Canada. Barbarella seems to also produce female-maker sons like FGAF Battlestar 540U who gave to DJ Farms their best heifer calf this year. Also, Barbarella gave us an awesome calf last year: Barbella 611W, a full sister of Barbs Paint, who will be our future top donor! The sire is Porter’s Reserve 20R, half brother of SU Painter 59P. He is a very consistent bull with lots of power and phenotype. These should be one of your best investments of the year. If you are looking for longevity, phenotype, pigmentation, maternal, performance and consistency, don’t look anywhere else! These embryos are qualifi ed for International Export.

Emperor is probably one of the most under used original import homozygous polled bulls. Dominion Cattle Co. used him to produce some of the great polled cows, one being Dayton’s Polled Martha – Neumann’s dam. Emperor’s ability to create wide topped, deep ribbed and heavy boned progeny make him one of the rare polled imports used with those qualities. Emperor is not only famous on the female side but also in the bull department. SIBL/Clay Simmentals produced the $15,000 bull who sold last year in the National Trust sale to Prospect Hill Simmentals. Semen is very limited on Emperor. It was quite the search when I needed it a year ago. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to purchase this package.

Parview’s Mr. Kator carries all the Klyber trademarks: great disposition, big footed, deep bodied and extreme thickness. Klyber will probably go down as the best bull we will ever own and we have found him to work well with all aspects of the Simmental breed; Fleck, Reds & Blacks.
