It is for chil- dren up to 12 years. The children and leaders are on their school term holiday break today. There are activities on the back table for children. This week, our focus parish is Opotiki. Please pray today for Hiona-St Stephen’s, Opotiki. This historic parish in the eastern Bay of Plenty sits in the midst of painful stories of Maori-Pākeha relationships dating back to the 1860’s and the events that later triggered the diocesan bishop to move from Gisborne to Napier. Parishioners know about the cost of reconciliation. The Mokomoko–Volkner story is a symbol of that cost. It is a parish well engaged with the wider community, with deep family and historical connections, a range of Anglican Care programmes, and tries to provide creative worship within a traditional framework. The ministry team at Hiona-Stephens: Reverends Arthur Bruce (Vicar), David Kibblewhite and Elsie Walker; with Parish Wardens - Simon Dondi and Sue Watson; and vestry members. The parish is currently focused on exploring a respite/daycare centre for the elderly; a newly developed adult bereavement support group; re-kindling the relationship with the Torere congregation; planning for next year’s celebra- tions of 150 years of parish life. It is especially thankful for the children at worship – their life, vibrancy and enthusiasm, and the faithfulness of long-time worshippers.

CATHEDRAL HISTORY

We are gathering stories about the peo-ple of the Cathedral remembered around its walls. Bishop John would be grateful to hear from anyone (by email or written note) who knows any detail about the following individuals honoured on plaques:

Lewis Jardine d. 1916, Leslie McPherson d.1915, Sarah Davidson d.1916, Rupert Sutton d. 1943, Oriol Hovell d. 1911, Robert Leask d. 1903, Hugh De St Croix Hovell d. 1887, Annie Eskine d.1928 (and Edward, Lucy and Christopher), Alexander Davidson d.1910, Hannah Coleman d.1910, Samuel Gempton d.1925 and son William, both vergers of this cathedral, Florence Ashcroft d.1927, Ernest Henley d.1918, Roy Skelton d.1916, Edith Barry d.1931, Keith Ward d.1917.

THANK YOU!

… from Elisabeth Paterson …

Thank you all so very much for your prayers

for Mya. She was in Middlemore Hospital for

eleven weeks but now is in the Special Care

Baby Unit at HB Regional Hospital. She

weighs nearly 3kgs now but is still on breath-

ing assistance.

All our family thank you all so very much for

the love and prayers which have been given

to our very premature baby and we are sure

that this has been a major factor in her pro-

gress. With our love and grateful thanks.

… Diane & Ian Hopson …

Our sincere thanks to the Cathedral Parish

for their prayers over this last year. It has

not been an easy time for either of us but we

are both certain that your prayers helped me

get through everything that happened last

year from the new shoulder, the badly torn

knee, vertebral and tibia fractures and final-

ly the amazing knee surgery. My new knee

is a wonder and a miracle and I never

thought that 2 weeks out from the surgery I

could walk nearly normally. Our grateful

thanks to all those that supported us with de-

licious meals. We appreciated the warm and

loving thoughts of this gesture and each

meal was demolished entirely - none left

even for the cat! So we ask that you accept

our grateful thanks in giving us both so much

support and for just being there when we

needed you.

Your cathedral needs you!

If you know of young people anywhere from intermediate to senior high school age who would like to join a group train-ing to be cathedral servers for our main Sunday Eucharist and special services, please let Bishop John know soon.

Cathedral Choristers are not eligible!

Servers are young people who assist the clergy and lay ministers leading worship.

PATRONAL FESTIVAL Sunday 5 May

Pick up the latest copies of the Waiapu News,
