Our practice is no stranger to lower leg injuries. This month, we are highlighting your most common lower extremity injuries and introducing an effective and convenient new way to treat them.

Many of our patients suffer from these common overuse injuries and post-operative pain. Our recommended therapy always includes a combination of rest, ice, compression and elevation – also known as RICE therapy. While resting and keeping the legs elevated can be a challenge for any busy person, we find the most common reason for non-compliance is simply inconvenience. This month, we’re introducing a simple, mobile, effective way our patients can comply with RICE therapy protocol without missing a beat – 110% Compression + Ice.

The 110% Overdrive Kit consists of four parts:

Compression Socks: Engineered for recovery and performance, the medical gradient compression enhances circulation while the unique design protects your legs and feet. The roomier toe box, arch support and non-binding top band make them exceptionally comfortable and ideal for travel too.

Compression Ice Sleeve: Engineered to make rehab simple, Overdrive’s Ice Sleeve allows for targeted placement of 110% Reusable Ice Inserts to prevent swelling and reduce inflammation. The soft compression sleeve fits perfectly over the compression sock with openings at the arch of the foot, the ankle and just below the knee.

Reusable Ice Inserts: Flexible and customizable for the perfect fit, patients simply hydrate them and place them in the freezer. These ice inserts can be used as often as needed for up to 8 months. No more leaky bags of ice or mess to clean up! Patients can also warm the inserts easily in the microwave when heat therapy needed. Replacements are available online.

Convenient Thermal Bag: Each Overdrive Kit comes with a special thermal carrying bag, so that you can take RICE therapy on the road. Ice inserts stay cold for up to 6 hours in the bag.

110% Testimonials “ I suffered with plantar fasciitis for 3 years. I would stop running until I thought it was at bay, just to have it rear its ugly head not long after starting back. At that time I did not wear compression socks as I worried about how the sock would feel in my running shoe. I decided it was time to give them a try as my calves were always tight and thought that may be the culprit. After wearing the compression socks and icing right after my runs my pain began to subside. I am now running pain free and never run with-out my 110% compression socks!” – Kellie Smirnoff, Ultra-runner, Jacksonville Beach

“As someone who has battled various knee problems, these are by far the best product I’ve ever tried. They easily fit under “normal” clothes, so you can easily wear them after your workout. The compression system is so good that the ice is just an added bonus. For those of you who have ever tried icing your knees, only to have to hold it in place or sit with your legs propped up, then these are for you!”

110% Blitz Knee Sleeve: Faster Recovery By Joanna Starkey, DPT, CHT

FASTER RECOVERY FROM KNEE PAIN Each year, millions of people get hit by knee pain. Considering the knee is the largest joint in the human body, it's not surprising that it takes its fair share of wear and tear. It's composed of several parts and daily use over time can wear them down. In our practice, we prescribe RICE therapy protocol to our patients who present with knee issues. This month, we introduce a convenient new way to help you recover and rehabilitate from these common overuse injuries. But first, let’s explore the issues, causes and treatment associated with common knee injuries: THE ISSUES 1. Meniscus tear: The menisci are two, C-shaped disks of cartilage on either side of the knee's upper and lower bones. You'll often find cartilage in joints, as it serves as a buffer that absorbs the shock of impact. It also helps you balance weight distribution on the knee. When the menisci tear, you're in for some pain. Typically, a meniscus tear comes from any activity that involves quickly twisting or turning the leg. There may even be an audible "popping" noise. Pain will be immediate from even basic activities like walking, and chances are you'll see swelling in the knee joint. 2. Torn, sprained or strained ligaments: Ligaments are another essential part of your knee - and your leg as a whole. These bands of fibrous tissue are tough as nails and connect bones to one another, which in turn stabilizes the joints. Ligaments are somewhat elastic and we stretch them with pretty much every movement we make. They can also be lengthened with use, which is how you boost flexibility. Unfortunately, when ligaments are tight and lacking in elasticity, they can tear. Most athletes know someone who has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear - or "torn ACL." The medial collateral ligament - or MCL - is another common injury. Usually, indulging in some stretching before and after exercise or any other basic warm-up activity can keep tears, sprains or strains from happening. 3. Tendonitis and bursitis: Tendons are similar to ligaments in their toughness and flexibility. These bands of tissue connect the muscle to the bone itself and keep your skeletal system moving in sync with your muscles. Overuse a tendon and it can become inflamed or even tear. You can also irritate the bursa, a small, fluid-filled sac that cushions the area between bone, tendon and muscle. Continue to irritate the tendon or bursa, and you've got a case of tendonitis or bursitis, respectively, on your hand. Tendonitis or bursitis of the knee can be a real pain for runners, so know your physical limits and push them gradually, rather than in one tendon-snapping, exhaustive workout. 4. Cartilage damage: Cartilage, the tough connective tissue that the menisci are made from, is essential to your knees' health. In fact, the surfaces of the bones within your knee joints are covered with articular cartilage. This has a smooth, gliding surface that allows for quick, exact and easy joint movement - like a quick turn during a jog or a layup on the basketball court. The articular cartilage also works as a shock absorber - key for each footfall in a 5K, or when you come down from that layup and your feet slam the ground. Articular cartilage can degenerate over time and is sped up by osteoarthritis, so be sure to take care of your knees and avoid any undue damage. When articular cartilage damage occurs, pain ensues. Making Bodies Better

5. Post-Operative Knee Pain: This is a challenge for nearly all of our post-operative patients. Pain and swelling after surgery is to be expected, but can be managed. The key to a faster recovery is consistent compliance with RICE therapy. CAUSES What leads to knee pain? Often, it's just the wear and tear over a long period of time. Sometimes it's a more specific action. Sudden twisting and turning in the knee; overextending the knee; consistent hard impact, especially when the knee is flexed; sudden stops and starts; falling on or sustaining a direct blow to the knee; sudden shifts in weight onto the knee; or prolonged or repeated pressure directly on the joint - all of these could spell trouble. TREATMENT If you've got an acute knee injury - the kind you can treat at home - start RICE therapy immediately and stick with it regularly, even after your knee is in better shape. Following a more significant injury, chances are that physical therapy will be necessary. And, in some cases, surgery may even be required. These extreme injuries can sometimes be the result of ignoring previous, more minor injuries - so if you want to avoid the hospital, make sure you ice, compress, rest and stretch. A CONVENIENT NEW TOOL Make your RICE therapy easy and hands-free with the help of the 110% Blitz Knee Sleeve. Blitz Knee Compression Sleeves combine the benefits of compression and the power of an ice bath in one simple piece of gear. With 360° pockets, reusable ice inserts and a thermal carrying bag, they transition from compression gear to a complete mobile recovery system in one easy step. Worn during activity, the Blitz Knee Compression Sleeve stabilizes joints and decreases the muscle vibration that leaves your knee sore. Adding ice therapy prevents swelling and reduces inflammation. Targeting both sides and the entire knee surface through 360° coverage, The Blitz Knee Sleeve is designed for maximum comfort, performance and recovery.

The Blitz Knee Sleeve Compression + Ice Kit Includes: Compression Ice Sleeve: Engineered to make rehab simple, the knee sleeve allows for targeted placement of 110% Reusable Ice Inserts to prevent swelling and reduce inflammation. The double layer of gradient compression includes stability zones to support your knee during movement.

Reusable ice Inserts: Flexible and customizable, patients simply hydrate them and place in the freezer. These ice inserts can be used as often as needed for up to 8 months. Replacements are available online.

Convenient Thermal Bag: Each Blitz Knee Sleeve Kit comes with a special thermal carrying bag, so that you can take RICE therapy on the road. Ice inserts stay cold for up to 6 hours in the bag.
