Dr. Dick Schindler had a vision, and it revolved around biking. An outdoor enthusiast for most of his life, his many activities included running, biking, canoeing, and skiing. In 2014, he envisioned Austin with a high school cycling team, and single handedly launched the team in their inaugural season. The mountain bike team is community based, formed under the City of Austin Park and Recreation Department. As a composite team, students from Mower County (public, private, and home based) between grade 6 and 12 can participate. In 2014, the Austin team were 9 strong. In 2020, the team topped 32 cyclists. Dedicated riders, parents, and coaches work tirelessly to ensure great team success. Along with support from the community, the result is a winning combination.
Not being endowed with hills and mountains, the idea of trail flowing along the Cedar River would highlight the new venture. As a pillar of the community, Dick’s vision created a ground swell of support, emotion, and imagination to continue his lead. A collaboration with the Hormel Foods Corporation put the plan into action. With the support of loyal residents and local businesses, the Southern Minnesota Bicycling Club developed over 3 miles of single track mountain bike trail for the high school bike team to train and race on. The trail was completed in the fall of 2015 and Austin played host to a race as part of the Minnesota High School Cycling League, with over 600 students from schools across Minnesota. Austin hosted races from 2015 to 2019, and will continue for many more years. Many tireless hours of trail building and maintenance work has continued, and resulted in 5 miles of trail. This complements the many paved City trails and the nearby Shooting Star Trail, bringing bike riding diversity to the area.
