in the same way that construction is achieved only through the transformation of matter and the transformation of landscape elsewhere, the realm of architectural design has evolved through time as the transforma-tion, reinterpretation and super-imposition of knowledge and information. With each built structure a process of alteration of landscape and matter be-gins, and when it is completed, a process of decay also starts; a moment of architectural knowledge is frozen and represented for as long as the structure lasts in its initially conceived form. there is nothing new under the sun consisted of hoisting 3.5 tons of earth into a small chamber of a 15th century palace and then compacting it into a solid rammed earth object. We wanted to provoke discussion re-garding topics of tradition, contemporaneity, territory and the built environment. the installation formally suggests to the observer how architecture depends in the form of territory, energy, and resources. We felt that working with earth would be the most appropriate material to evoke this dis-cussion for three reasons: 1. understanding earth as a basic construc-tion material used all over the world. 2. traditional building techniques necessarily depend on oral tradition or transformation of knowledge to evolve and survive.3. the plastic notion that conjures the act of subtracting compacted earth from the ground to mold it into new shapes without interfering in its material capacities. therefore in order for us to make it possible to build this installation in rammed earth, we had to submit ourselves to the learning process of the technique. We traveled to a colonial town in the Santand-er region of colombia called Barichara

where rammed earth is commonly used. through a construction workshop called Building local, we got familiarized with the technique. Afterwards we had to do some tests in the outskirts of Bogota where we ended up building a 1 to 1 model of the in-stallation for Venice. this process enriched our experience with the technique and was true to the essence of transformation and trespassing of knowledge and information.

the idea is to invite different architects, artists, or other field professionals, to propose a topic and submit an image that accompanies the topic in order to create a one week debate, discussion, or knowledge transfer regarding the selected theme.

Some possible themes we are staring on are:

1. landscape and territory control. different way to transform to create architecture. (city and nature)

2. the architects purpose within the built envi-ronment. (particular and personal experiences in different cities of the world)

3. Architecture as an empirical approach.

A first layer of rock isolates from humidity of the floor. the wooden formwork (2.44m x 1.22m) contains the earth while it’s rammed with a wooden pisón. earth was mixed with lime and a small percentage of cement to assure durability to exposure. the wall was sealed fro water with cactus oil. the relationship between man and territory is characterized by the establishment of the first over the second with the objective of obtaining a stable platform of survival and development for a long-term basis. When con-structing the city, man searched for a strategic relationship with the components of the place: the hydrological system, the topography, and the resources. if these variables were suited for foundation the resulting architecture would be the origin from where a society would structure. therefore, territory would trace the composition axis for the organizational struc-ture of the built environment. it is paradigmatic how this relation-ship nurtures the growth of the city mean-time the city erases the trace of the territory that made it develop. the city grows as terri-tory becomes invisible. the city of Bogotá exemplifies this paradigm. it´s built-environment imposed over the complex ecosystem of the “humedal an-dino” (the most important wetland system of the northern Andes, resultant of the many wa-ter sources that come down the mountain into 3 rivers that flow down to the Bogotá river). this project takes a specific site that gathers all complex situations derived from the unawareness of territory. the neighbor-hood la isla del Sol was built in 1986 over one of the meanders of the rio tunjuelo in the southeast of Bogotá. the meander shaped its morphological distinctiveness enclosing it´s population in an island. the loop of the river would overflow occasionally causing environ-mental emergencies to it´s inhabitants. in 1989 as result of a health alert the river was drained and connected to eliminate the mean-der. the surrounding neighborhoods decided to build a wall to prevent the expansion of the isla del Sol. Since the population lacked the possibility of reaching the public transporta-tion through the adjacent streets, they used the containment earth walls ¨jarillones¨ that

accompanied the river´s flow to reach the Autopista del Sur, or Av. gaitán cortes. the solution transformed the border of the isla del Sol from a hydrological-border to a socio-economical barrier. none the less enriched and originated a relationship with the population of isla del Sol and the tunjuelo river. the urban intervention works as an occupying strategy by which a hierarchization of activities is established over a new linear park created upon the existent containment earth walls. the purpose of the park is to cre-ate a border, in-between line, that serves as a catalyzer of activities in search of fortifying the relationships population-population and popu-lation-environment.

the park is divided in three zones:

1. metropolitan border-platform: Focused on connecting the population with the public transportation system. the platform is con-centrated in providing basic services to the community through a local civic centre and a public plaza used to generate different com-mercial and cultural activities.

2. ecosystem border-platform: oriented in understanding, studying, and enriching the relationship of people with the tunjuelo river basin and it´s wetland ecosystem. the recon-figuration of the natural landscape through the reestablishment of local fauna will enrich the environmental essence of the territory and the awareness of people with its environment.

3. Socio-economical border-platform: concen-trates in reconfiguring and reincorporating to the city the physical limits of the isla del Sol. taking the old course of the river as a signifi-cant trace in the memory of the place, the plan replaces the existent wall with a grove of public spaces that would encourage local activities.

parque Jarillon public School. dialogue between public buildings and public space. the building ‘s rooftop serves as a prolongation of the park. At the plaza level, the building opens itself with community services that serve as institutional support for locals. the classrooms relate with the rock containment walls of the high-rise park. this void generates private patios for students. rooftop program: Auditorium, outdoors gym, relax zone, read-ing gardens, productive cells.

pieces. Fragments of a fictional place. the men

who organized and held dreams after the open

door of an odeon, a day they had to close it.

endgame, Fin de partie. From the end of the

game we started our game. inventory mate-

rial left in place unassisted, full of intangible

memory. like a ship without pilot we start on

a journey through the layers of time displayed

on the walls and naked structures of the old

tpB. We collected wood columns, steel beams,

desks and all sorts of dusty rubble could find

along the way. recorded signed the wreckage.

We invented our idle inventory making visible

the potential of the materials in order to cre-

ate new conformations, share insights and ran-

dom thoughts. taking away a decade of rest,

we suspended columns and beams to form a

small auditory, architecture, structure, elliptical

sculpture or shell.

From the history of this enigmatic and em-

blematic building, space of art and culture

of Bogota we reckon fragments and gaps.

¿Where are the inventories, equipment and

objects left in the course of the years of

the tpB? perhaps in the memory of people.

the story is heard, chopped, stolen, sticks,

reorganizes and invents, not encapsulated or

embalming. When a piece of memory pass-

es in front we play with it and let it go. We

release a collection, bricolage over bricolage

arranged for visitors that enter the newly

opened door of the candelaria can build rela-

tionships and wander a place that appears.

a l t i p l a n o was commissioned an intervention

for the first odeon art fair in Bogota. the fair is

held in the old tpB building, it began as a theater,

used as a tv studio finally abandoned for nearly 10

years. We decided to map everything we found.

once we had the complete inventory of the ma-

terial available at the building we proceeded to

decide the space and type of intervention we were

going to build. We found columns, beams, desks,

tables, doors and drawers amongst other. the in-

tervention became an addition of three functions;

contemplative space, exhibition space for the

inventory and an auditory for the conferences held

during the art fair.

All cultural content of the fair (workshops, conferences) took place at the sculpture - auditorium. the floating beams slightly balanced their figure after decades of repose.

Following scientific methods of organizing and classifying objects. using the process of inventory an enterprise faces when encoun-tered with bankruptcy. A rigorous approach to all the left-behind objects found in the old teatro popular de Bogota conduced to hours of measurements, observations, and fictions. once conclud-ed all articles had been systematized by the routine to a series of datasheets that commenced to share a story.

during 2010 and 2011 la niña phenomenon damaged more than 3,300 schools nationwide. this situation compromises the education of thousands of children who require an efficient response in practical architectural solutions that strengthen academic dynamics and the national project of education. the ministry of national education as promoter, cooperating with Foundation Argos and the colombian So-ciety of Architects as an advisory body design a puBlic competition For the deSign oF ArchitecturAl prototypeS oF the SpAceS thAt compoSe the educAtionAl inFrA-Structure For the diFFerent regionS oF the country. in the emergency caused by the raining season, we propose a project that seeks to go beyond formal solutions. Architecture in series that can deal, in a versatile, simple and efficient form the following aspects: transpor-tation, installation and construction, cultural adaptation, climate, topography and the needs of each region. the schools are prefabricated modular buildings, comprising the circulation, furniture and public space. these modules for its mul-tiple functions sizing easily to the topography and generate diverse spatial relationships between prototypes, separated each other by courtyards and streets. the different possibilities that can occur between outdoor corridors, indoor corridors, courtyards, ramps, stairs, steps, pots, benches, bins, games, drinking fountains, among others, stimulate, encounter, games, meetings and discussion. integrally forming the identity of an individual, social group and in turn the entire educational community. the project takes as

its starting point the need to configure the architecture from a pedagogical thinking, un-derstanding architectural space as a teaching strategy. in this way architectural space creates pedagogical situations and architectural situa-tions fabricate pedagogical spaces. taking advantage that most of the national territory has wood as an accessible resource, of renewable capacity, and low carbon footprint. We decided to make this material the main ele-ment in the construction of the prototypes. All the prototypes are constructed with the same elements: structural wood frames, green roof, and wood panels that compose the façade. the materiality of the panels varies according to the region. the different needs of climate, venti-lation, lighting, noise and temperature control of each site determine the final design of the façade. that way and recognizing our immense climatic diversity the panels ensure that the system is applicable not only to the general conditions of each region, but also those spe-cific to each location. the use of elements with openings in the façades, transparent chimneys and reflective ceiling, encourages cross ven-tilation and indirect overhead lighting, saving energy and generating the comfort demanded by school spaces. the system is able to support standard materials by using a 1.20m x 1.20m grid. the construction system is divided into two parts, a simple frame structure and façade panels formed from prefabricated elements, ensuring easy transportation of materials and a mass production process; simple, inexpensive, easily constructed, lightweight, fast and above all, feasible and realistic.

population located on high risk zones of galeras Volcano.

on the southwestern Andean region of co-lombia, a chain of active volcanoes encloses the metropolitan area of the city of pasto. the galeras Volcano, a flora and fauna natural re-serve and among the most active volcanoes in colombia, threaten over 2000 families that live along it’s skirts. the competition searched for urban and architectonic solutions that would encourage the vulnerable population to volun-tary displace their homes to the non-risk lands acquired by the government. the vulnerable population divides itself in 24 % rural habitants and 76% semi-urban habitants. taking into account this situation both, urban and rural scenarios were taken into account for the proposals.

government’s Planning Approach

habitants of the Andes region live mainly on an agriculture economy, divided either into large estate plantations or smallholding farms. the galeras families live on small-holding economies and depend absolutely on intermediaries that dictate prices making families commercially unable to grow. on one of the scenarios, the government proposes to relocate 344 houses on 23,5 ha. this division results in individual parcels of 683 m2, for which the government’s scenario will encour-age smallholding economies to continue.

Territorial strategy

our scheme concentrates the dwellings into smaller private parcels of 120 m2, which liberates 17 ha of fertile land for developing a productive park medium estate cooperative administered by the community. these pro-ductive areas would guarantee minor costs of production due to the bigger amount of land besides the suppression of intermediar-ies. the project suggests that an important percent of the production would be destined

to guarantee yearlong food security of the inhabitants. crop rotation would become possible and sustainable on this bigger scale system. All dwellings would guarantee a harmonic relationship with the productive landscape and maintain the semi-rural way of life.

Architectural strategy – Progressive shell

the typology proposes a progressive dwelling.

the first stage of the house is the basic shell that includes the earthquake resistant structure, rainwater collection butterfly roof, balcony, one private room and stairs. this stage guarantees the complex hydraulic and electric systems installed (kitchen, laundry room, bathroom) of the house. Future steps led by auto construction must only fill the double height living room for additional private rooms.

water strategy - Integrated dwelling Cells

individual houses are grouped by pairs. not only they share a central structural wall but also all the disposal water and pluvial recollection systems function ensemble. Sewage waters are driven to natural swamp filters that oxygenate the water and direct it for irrigation. Soap waters are driven through gravity filters. rainwater is collected by the butterfly roofs and driven down to subterranean tanks that prevent water from getting in contact with oxygen and sunlight, preventing its deterioration. the laundry rooms are an essential place of Andean lifestyle. the integrated cell system creates community by generating an event around the laundry rooms.

CONsIdeRATIONs uPON TOPOgRAPhy

understanding the landscape of the site

as the primal objective for this project,

determined the principle intentions from

which the building took shape. the site,

highest point of the university of campinas

campus, attracted students and locals for

its panoramic views and star spotting ac-

tivities. the building proposed to maintain

the highest point as a public extension of

the museum and organized itself along the

topography lines in order to minimize the

excavations on site.

even though the competition de-

manded for an extensive program, it was

possible to create a building that rests

delicately and unfolds horizontally on

the terrain. Five volumes, tied by a foyer,

spread rhythmically enouncing lightness

and mass, each containing a specific part

of the program. the disposition of the

volumes resulted from the topography and

the views, creating gap-windows between

the volumes that would imply the relation-

ship between science and research and the

outside world.

the construction and structure of the

building was resolved in various manners,

adapting the system to the characteristics

and functions of each of the volumes. For

the roof of the principal volumes, a light

triangulated steal structure, industrially fabri-

cated and for quick ensemble was the proper

solution to guarantee the maximum free

space. the solution for the temporary exhi-

bitions volume, with dimensions 30m x 30m,

consisted of double directed steal trusses of

height 1,25 m which combined guarantee

the 30 m open space. this structure is sup-

ported on “ i “ steal columns every 2.5 m.

tic program should be resolved taking into

account that all windows should maintain at

their specific location due to the impossibility

of interfering with the existing building façade.

the windows would determine the location of

the elements of the house according to the

views and daylight time.

understanding the variety of flows

amongst a family nucleus inside a dwelling,

our project consisted of a productive ring

(house access - social bathroom – studio

library – tV room – kitchen private access)

that would conduce the flows and maintain

a sequence of private and public space. ele-

ments of this ring as the bookshelves were

intentionally created to provoke encounter

among the family members along with an

unfinished and transitory space that will

modify its spectator’s lifestyle through time.

in the same way as in the patio Apartment,

empty furniture activates circulation spaces.

each member of the family commu-

nicated its ideals of private and public, which

reflected on the disposition of the program

and the custom design of the built-in furni-

ture. Special attention was given to all the

wooden carpentry details.

intervention in an apartment in Bogotathe reform was carried out in a first floor apartment of an 80’s building in Bogota. the apartment had a patio for the bedrooms next to the garden of a conservation house. Social spaces faced the street where the slope of the road sustains a visual and aural pollution caused by constant traffic.For the intervention it was taken as a starting point the need to link social spaces and the patio, exploiting the light and quietness of this space. creating an apartment linked to the patio rather than to the street. through this operation to concentrate introverted space and extend the patio into the apartment we made a system where the patio is an extension of social space as well as an extension of the private areas. the courtyard was covered with a teak wood deck to turn it into a welcoming

space that collects and combines the activities of the home. the patio was connected with the rest of the apartment with a furniture intervention a succession or rhythm of activities: studio + kitchen / grill + bench. the intervention weaves interior space with the patio and gathers in-side-outside activities as a joint process. two libraries make up the interior space. one opens into the social area and other moves through the corridor leading to the rooms. it sought to create usable space in the circulation and thus to generate a meeting point inside the house led by the display of collections. the reform carried out a general change in all floor finishes, electrical, hydraulic, and wood furniture.

As it occurs with the colonial architecture of Bogota, the apartment now opens itself to an inner patio that illuminates and ventilates the house as well as serving as a meeting point that provokes a variety of activities.

this duplex apartment, with full-size terraces, vast living room, and large bedrooms with private bathroom, had a very tight, gloomy and dim kitchen. taking into account that the owner of the apartment is a amateur cook that revolves her social life around the ritual of inviting others for dinner, became the det-onating element for the owner to invite us to think upon a new kitchen for the dwelling. An operation similar to the one made for the patio Apartment became an optimal solution for the situation. one stroke with a sequence of events: laundry room – social bathroom – refrigerator – chalkboard – kitchen – studio – terrace. this sequence became theatrical stage for the apartment’s weekly rituals. the structure of the building

was revealed and special furniture designed for the empty walls. the living room received direct morning light, which became a fan-tastic place for a vertical garden where we planted multiple cooking spices.

located in a corner of northern Bogota, it has a street on one side and a pedestrian trail on the other. initially the lot was made up of four houses in a row that where brought down. the new building will have 24 apart-ments from 90m2 to 150m2. the intention was to have as many apartments as possi-ble looking to the street, avoiding internal apartments. each floor is comprised of 6 apartments, all different from each other, which sought to maximize the use of exterior facades having just one indoor unit. We used a repeated structural module on the main facade, in order to reverse the position of the terraces in the adjoining apartment floors, thus ensuring a rhythm of voids and planes.the client was looking a way to differentiate

from the rest of the residential projects around it. We accomplished this by using good quality materials, maximizing the com-munal areas, ensuring a patio in the back of the project and increasing the size and quality of space.

South and west façade. rhythm and patterns of shad-ows. this combinations are a result of the location of the terraces inside the apartments. Some units have terraces in their social areas while others have the terrace in their private zones.

A typical 400-m2 office open space only de-termined by and the structure of the building became the place for Japanese multinational tire company yokohama to settle their new headquarters in Bogotá. the established entrance from the elevator lobby, the views to the city or the mountains, and the morning or afternoon natural light became variables as well for decision-making. the specific program demanded by yokohama gave us the opportunity to explore tectonic elements that could organize, distrib-ute, and determine the space. usually office spaces are organized and divided by glass and furniture. in this case we wanted to explore mass and void. After a series of considerations in materials and light, the popular-used con-

crete prefabricated modules of 20 cm x 20 cm became an interesting element to conform the light-diffusing, public-private, sculpture like wall. these prefabricated blocks are commonly used in the popular neighborhoods of Bogota for natural ventilation and illumination and ornamentation. once people exit the elevator and head towards the entrance door, they encounter with a sculptural screen that varies its light throughout the day. the screen splits and distributes the office space. to the left one finds the reception and the kitchen. the kitchen become then a meeting point for em-ployees as well as a waiting lounge for visits.
