HARVEST CONTRIBUTIONS FOR LOCAL CHARITIES This year we are giving our

harvest contributions to two

local charities. The first is Loose Ends, a drop

in centre for the homeless which is actually the

only place in Newbury where vulnerable people

like that can go. They are a great charity that

aims to provide immediate and long term help

as well as providing an environment of love and

acceptance to those who really need it.

The second is Fairclose Day Centre which

provides meals and social events for the elderly.

To the people who go there, the night of Bingo

or the knit ’n’ natter might be the highlight of

their week.

We encourage every student to bring at least

one tin of food into school. If everyone brought

one, that would make one and a half thousand

meals for needy people to have. Soups, stews,

meat pies, tinned fruit and vegetables would all

be really appreciated. So start bringing in those

tins and don’t forget!

Please deliver tins to your House Office before

14 October.

KEY STAGE 3 AWARDS Thank you to everyone, especially

the students and parents, who

made the evening on 29 September such a

success. The evening took the form of an Oscar

awards ceremony. There were four students

nominated in every subject who each received

a certificate. The overall winner, in bold type,

was announced on stage and was presented with

a voucher. Nominees and winners are detailed

BOYS’ PE Rugby

Year 7 B v Forest

The Year 7B team got off to a promising start

to the season losing gracefully 25-10 but

showing potential along the way. Our

opponents had an advantage having already

played three games whereas this was our first

match as a team. Captain, Charlie Lewis scored

one of our two tries, following a great pass by

Charlie Mabbatt. Daniel Rawlins scored as well

with input from scrum half Mabbatt. Special

mention to Teague Pasea who put in an

outstanding performance in his first ever rugby

match.

Charlie Mabbatt 7D3

Year 7A v Westgate and Forest

The Year 7s have made a very promising start

to their first campaign at St Bart’s. Firstly, they

travelled to Winchester to play Westgate

School, a strong outfit with a large contingent

of club players. In what was both a high scoring

and physical game, St Bart’s overcame the size

and power of the Westgate forwards and won

45-35. Although early days, St Bart’s are

beginning to develop an exciting brand of rugby

with some great team tries particularly in the

second half. Man of the match was Josh

Lefever, who carried superbly and led the

tackling from the front.

They then carried this through into their A team

game versus Forest on the Saturday, winning a

close and entertaining encounter 20-15.

St Bart’s really stepped up their defensive

performance from the Wednesday, putting

pressure on and forcing mistakes from a team

who liked to move the ball around. Forest began

to be more effective in possession in the second

half, but St Bart’s defended excellently to close

the game out. Men of the match were Luke

Boyt, for powering over for two tries, with

special mentions for Elliot Crouch and Caleb

Fox-Jones, who led the defensive line superbly

and forced a lot of turnovers. A great start in

general for the whole Year 7 squad, with Lord

Williams and Claire’s Court to come in the next

couple of weeks.

- 10 -

Year 8 v Forest

On 1 October the boys played Forest away and

despite the wind and rain both teams battled

hard to try to make it out on top. St Bart’s had

a great start and at half time had a 10-0 lead.

However an injury from the opposition caused

a long delay. Play eventually continued and

Forest managed to level the scores and then

pushed into the lead 15-10. St Bart’s dug deep

and, determined to equalise, made it to a final

score of 15-15. Well done to all the team

especially James MacAllan who was man of the

match. We are pleased to report the injured

Forest player has recovered.

Tony Stancombe

Year 8 Rugby Team Undefeated at County

Rugby Festival

It was 29 September on a chilly morning at

Pangbourne College where the Year 8 St Bart’s

rugby squad had their first match of the County

Festival against Denefield School, where

St Bart’s comfortably won 45-0 to start on a

superb note for the day ahead. The team then

faced a very strong Claire's Court but played

impressively to come out with an important

20-0 win. Going top of their pool, St Bart’s

went through to face Reading Grammar and

managed to pull out another heroic victory

ending 45-0 with Callum Maggs putting on an

amazing performance on the scoring front and

Joel Douglas leading the tackling. In the "Final"

of the Festival St Bart’s were up against Claire's

Court again putting out one last resounding

victory winning 30-10, leaving Pangbourne on

a high.

The whole squad performed superbly on a day

on which they scored 28 tries in one hour of

rugby. Special mentions must go to Ben

Newman, Finn Williams, Cameron Stewart,

James MacAllan and Charlie Shakespeare and

Joel Douglas.

Try scorers were Callum Maggs (8), Ben

Newman (6), Fin Williams (5), Cameron

Stewart (3), Ali Jardine (3), Joel Douglas (1),

Will Conington (1) and Alexander Groves-Way

(1).

Squad:

Scott Richards, Hugo Dessiaume, Johann

Alexander Groves-Way, Louis Favede, Joe

Garcia, George Blake, Callum Maggs, Alfie

Pontin.

Year 9

Lost to Forest School on Saturday, and

beat Park House 29-14. Man of the match Sam

Mitchell.

Year 10 played a really close game against

Reading Boys’ School in the National Cup, but

were narrowly defeated 37-34.

Year 10 v Park House won 46-17, man of the

match Dan Stevenson.

Football

Year 8 played Forest in the National Cup. They

went down 2-0 in the first few minutes, but

came back to level the score 2-2 after half time

when Man of the Match Dan Power scored a

superb individual free kick and then followed it

up with a goal a few minutes later. Forest came

back to win the match 4-2.

Year 11 went 3-0 up against Kennet in the

National Cup, all three goals were scored by

Man of the Match Joe Power. Kennet came

back to level the scores, and eventually won

after penalties.

GIRLS’ PE Netball

The Year 8 and 9 teams played league fixtures

against The Downs. Results and players of the

match were:

Y8 won 14-8 Nora Shields

Senior Lacrosse

Berkshire Tournament – 28 September

The Berkshire Tournament, this year held at

Queen Anne’s, saw the senior first team take on

four schools from across the county. Against

tough QAS and Downe House opposition the

girls battled well and some good defence from

Katherine Wadge and Bobbi Lainsbury meant

the opposition had to work hard to score their

goals. Against Heathfield, St Bart’s always

looked the better side and with determined

drives from Annabel Mangan and Millie Pope

saw St Bart’s as 6-1 victors. The final game

against St George’s saw St Bart’s dominating

but unable to find the back of the net. Luckily

the girls finished the game with a 1-0 win which

was enough to secure third place overall.

Due to finishing third, nine girls have been

selected to attend Berkshire Trials.

Congratulations to Jen Alston, Annie Taylor,

Saffron Langley, Bobbi Lainsbury, Annabel

Mangan, Abby Graham, Izzy Sanderson, Laura

Kirk and Millie Pope. First team - Annie Taylor, Saffron Langley, Alex

Jarman, Jen Alston, Amy Bowen, Sam Jarman,

Bobbi Lainsbury, Annabel Mangan, Susie Drake,

Abby Graham, Izzy Sanderson, Laura Kirk, Millie

Pope, Izzie Lainsbury, Courtney Renouf, Hannie

Makant and Katherine Wadge.

Wednesday 5 October v Heathfield

St Bart’s took to the field full of confidence

after the tournament last week, however it was

Heathfield that came out quicker and took

advantage of a sleeping defence to go a goal up.

St Bart’s battled well but didn’t seem able to

find their rhythm and found themselves 2-0

down. Annabel Mangan brought St Bart’s back

into the game with a determined drive from mid

field whilst Hannie Makant calmly scored her

penalty shot and defence Bobbi Lainsbury

evening up the score. The game continued with

St Bart’s unable to find consistency and going

into the final minute the score was all level at

three goals each. In the dying seconds Annabel

scored her second goal of the game giving

St Bart’s a narrow 4-3 victory. First team - Annie Taylor, Saffron Langley, Jen

Alston, Amy Bowen, Bobbi Lainsbury, Annabel

Mangan, Susie Drake, Abby Graham, Izzy

Sanderson, Laura Kirk, Millie Pope, Izzie

Lainsbury, Courtney Renouf, Hannie Makant and

Jess Allum.

The first half saw both teams equally matched

in terms of skill and at half time the score was

4-3 in St Bart’s favour. Right from the first

draw in the second half St Bart’s took the

initiative with a determined run and excellent

shot placement from Lauren Bell. Lilia Norman

quickly added to this and St Bart’s looked on

the way to a good victory. Heathfield battled

back and it took determined defence led by Cait

Prendergast to keep them out. St Bart’s

continued to work hard until the very end and

were deserving 10-7 winners of the match.

Second team – Cait Prendergast, Harriet

Denton, Lauren Manton, Frankie Twyford,

Freya Eva, Amy Quesada-Getgood, Amber

Layton, Alissa Thiel, Ellie Fell, Beth Daly,

Lauren Smith, Lauren Bell, Tegan Scapens,

Davina Emetulu, Niamh Watson, Lilia Norman,

Emma Greenslade and Lucy James.

Year 8 v Heathfield

What a great third game for the Year 8 team

which concluded in winning their first ever

match.

The girls won 10-4 with the first two goals

quickly being scored in the first two minutes by

Luci Robertson and Zoe Quartley. The defence,

including the stunning defence of the goalie

(Beth C), worked hard to keep the Heathfield

attack down.

Imogen Matthews had her first game as well as

Maddy Ettridge who fought well to win some

balls from the opposition and then offered up

great passes to the centre players such as Bianca

Vicaria and Sophie Cunningham. Bianca got

some great goals from coming round the back

of the goal.

Players of the match (given by Heathfield) were

Beth Carlton and Zoe Quartley.

Miss Preston's player of the match goes to Luci

Robertson who dodged round defence like a pro

and scored an incredible five goals.

Well done girls!
