Board Meeting: The Board met at 5:00 PM in the library at Cottonwood Center for the Arts. In attendance were Janet Cruickshank, Nancy Neale, Carol Naylor, Myra Patin, Kathy Murray, Dennis Palsgrove, Marianne Flenniken and Carolyn Ginter.

According to Carolyn Ginter, we have 104 membership renewals, and there was discussion regarding the arrangement of the society’s membership directory.

Upcoming Signature Members’ Show and the International Watermedia Exhibition were discussed. CaFÉ, online entry system www.callforentry.org, has been chosen as our vehicle to solicit and receive entries into Watermedia. Joan Judge will work with a representative of CaFÉ to help us learn the process of application.

The venue for International Watermedia has been determined. It will be held at Library 21c at the intersection of Jamboree and Chapel Hills Road, located on the northeast side of Chapel Hills Mall. The venue is beautiful, has lots of parking and the library district is EXCITED to host our exhibit, opening reception and the workshop by juror, Ted Nuttall.

Additionally, the Library District would be interested in hosting our Signature Members’ Show in the future at the East Library, and also send portions of it to other libraries in the system. Members please note that the library solicits artists to show their work in its various locations; any of you may apply individually to take advantage of this opportunity. Here is the link: http://ppld.org/whats-new/call-art-7

Finding our space becoming small at Cottonwood, we have been exploring alternative locations to hold our meetings. One space that is available

to us is Imagination Celebration at the Citadel Mall. The meeting area is large and well lit and there is space to store our materials. The visibility of the PPWS will be increased through the display of our brochures, and the fliers and publicity Imagination Celebration sends out, as well as the location at the mall. The parking is well lit and close in. There is a self-contained restroom in the space and food is permitted in the meeting area.

Imagination Celebration Website: http://www.imaginationcelebration.orgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/imagination.celebration.3/info?ref=page_internal Also, PPWS members are invited to submit proposals to teach classes at Imagination Celebration. The space would also be available for our Signature Members’ Show.

The Board Meeting adjourned at 6:00 PM.

General Meeting: The General Meeting was called to order by President, Carol Naylor, at 6:35 PM.

Guests: The former receptionist extraordinaire of Cottonwood, Darlene Hanson, had the opportunity to be present at our meeting along with Flo and Bob Kiefer, who will be mentored by Janet Cruickshank. Reveille’s guest was Margo Anderwell.

Hosts and Chefs: Our Hosts, Barb Midyett and Jean Forsyth, as well as our Chefs, Lisa Dillman and Roberta Povelite, were thanked for this evening’s great snacks. Thanks also to Carol Naylor for going around with a bowl of candy to treat everyone for Halloween.

Our Hosts for the November meeting will be Nancy Neale and Margaret Pasolli, and the food will be provided

by our Chefs, Lee Murphy and Eric Fetsch.

Minutes: GeorgiAnna Carpenter motioned to accept the September Minutes as they appeared in the October newsletter, which was seconded by Nancy Neale.

Treasurer's Report: Kathleen Murray provided a financial report covering the period from our last meeting, September 17, 2014, through today, October 15, 2014.

The Building Fund has a balance of $1,836.67 due to an additional workshop fee of $200.

The Operating/Checking Account shows a balance of $3,149.75 after income of $1,395.95, mainly from membership dues, and usual expenses amounting to $377.36.

The Money Market account balance is $12,404.09 after minimal interest.

The Co-op Gallery Account reflects a balance of $1,020.94.

Committee Reports:

Marketing: No report

Building: The Martha Mans Workshop will be held October 30, 31 and November 1. Contact Larry Haught at [email protected] to register as there are very few spaces available. Visit Martha’s website at www.marthamans.com.

Membership: Carolyn Ginter left after the Board Meeting (See Board Meeting Minutes above).

Signature Members’ Show: The intake is December 2 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Cottonwood. The opening is December 5 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. ALL MEMBERS, PLEASE BRING FOOD! Show closes on January 3, 2015.

International Watermedia 2015: Library 21c will be the location for the International Watermedia Exhibition. It will be in June with exact dates still to be determined. We can hang between 75 and 100 pieces of art. There will be two receptions: the Library will host the opening reception and the PPWS will host the awards/workshop reception with the juror, Ted Nuttall http://www.tednuttall.com/index.html. The workshop will be June 24, 25 and 26, and cost has not been determined at this date.

Library: Myra announced that any magazines with fall colors or snow scenes on the cover were only 25 cents.

Old Business: We have been moved from our storage space at Cottonwood and found that our supplies were placed in a janitor’s closet.

New Business: A number of PPWS members that teach classes are offering a special benefit to newer members of two years or less in

attendance at the meeting. Each month we meet, the name of an attendee (meeting this criteria) will be drawn, and the winner may choose to take a class with one of the teaching participants. Thus far, Reveille Kennedy, Linda Blaize, Carol Naylor, Kang Lee Sheppard and Eric Fetsch have generously accepted the challenge to provide this incentive to new members! Thank you all. This month’s winner is Sue Andzik, and she has chosen to take a portrait class with Reveille!

The Call for Entries for the 2014 New Trends in Watermedia Exhibit, hosted by the Colorado Watercolor Society, was distributed to the members. The information can also be found on their website at: www.ColoradoWatercolorSociety.org. October 24, 2014, is the deadline for entries.

November Meeting – SAME TIME, SAME PLACE at COTTONWOOD! Although we discussed holding our November meeting at Imagination Celebration, due to scheduling conflicts, we will meet as usual at Cottonwood Center for the Arts.

Respectfully submitted,Marianne Flenniken, Secretary

Program: The delightful, entertaining and greatly talented Diane Fechenbach from Highlands Ranch, who also works in oil, pastel and acrylic, demonstrated her transparent watercolor painting technique. Diane’s emphasis is on VALUE. She starts every painting with a thumbnail value study using five shapes or less. She says the pigment can be anything as long as the value is right. To begin the demonstration painting, she had blocked in her lightest value and then worked in her darkest areas. She talked about up planes and down planes in the composition of rock. She pushed and pulled her shapes with application of more pigment or

lifting. She considered the warm and cool factors in her composition. “It’s the value not the pigment” characterized her message.

To learn more about Diane, her work, workshops and to contact her, visit her website at: www.LightnShadowStudio.com

Thank you Diane for the wonderful demo and for sharing with us your nearly completed painting!

November Program: Reveille Kennedy, Program Chair, has secured Anita Winter of Littleton, CO, to do a watercolor demonstration for our November Program. Anita is a representational watercolorist who has won regional and national awards for her art. She is comfortable painting on location and in the studio. Anita is a signature member of Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Society, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, and Colorado Watercolor Society. You won’t want to miss this demo. To see more of her work, visit her website at: http://anitawinter.com

Laurel Bahe will be teaching a necklace-making class. It will be at the Imagination Celebration space on December 6 at 1:00 PM. She will bring a flyer to the November meeting. Imagination Celebration is located in Space 750, Citadel Drive East, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80909, https://www.facebook.com/imagination.celebration.3/info?ref=page_internal

There will be pre-class homework. Participants will email their images to her, and she will then resize, crop, and print them to fit the necklaces. At the class, you will assemble the necklaces using scissors and glue. Your images can be photos of your artwork, children, pets or whatever you like as long as they are not copyrighted material.

Laurel will provide all the supplies and will charge $6.00 for each necklace put together in class. The necklace blanks are 25 mm x 35 mm portrait orientation, the bale (chain loop) is on the short side, so they hang taller than wide. That's about 1 x 1.25 inches. You can put together as many or as few necklaces as you like. The process is simple and children are welcome to come. The Imagination Celebration space may want a donation or small fee, so she may have to charge for that along with supplies.

Laurel hopes you are interested and come to make necklaces!

PPWS October Meeting and Diane Fechenbach Watercolor Demonstration - October 15, 2014

Diane Fechenbach is an award-winning realist artist working in watercolor, pastel and oil and a Signature member of the Colorado Watercolor Society and Master Signature member Colorado Pastel Society. Diane’s focus is value created by light and shadow. She showed us her book of thumbnail sketches, advising us to work small to avoid too much detail and concentrate on values. Her favorite quote is “the lightest dark in the shadow plane cannot be as light as the darkest dark in your light plane.” Diane passed around examples of her photo of rocks and stream, her value sketch and an image of the resulting painting. She uses a limited palette of warm and cool primaries with the addition of mineral violet and burnt sienna. Preferred brushes are rounds #6 through #18 and Arches 140 lb. paper. Mixing colors of a dark value range, she directly applied them to a painting prepared with an undercoat. These colors can be used for the light values when thinned with water. Thank you Diane for the important lesson in values and for keeping us laughing with your sharp humor. Be sure to visit her website at http://www.lightnshadowstudio.com

There was a standing room only crowd for the October meeting, all of whom stayed forDiane Fechenbach’s watercolor demonstration on light and shadow.
